The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) has produced this guide for use by advance parties or others who may not have immediate access to a fully qualified linguist. If your organization’s language translation requirements exceed the content of this publication, contact your organization’s Command Language Program Manager (CLPM) to formally identify the requirement.
This language guide is intended to provide survival-level language skills needed for basic communication only to members of any contingency force deployed to an area where the target language is spoken. It contains words and phrases that have been found to be most useful for contingency operations.
LANGUAGE SURVIVAL GUIDE INTENT
Each LSK begins with a pronunciation guide in which the lettesr of the target language are represented by closely related sounds in the English language. You should read over this guide and listen to the pronunciation guide section of the audio CD to familiarize yourself with the target language sounds. Each page of the LSK has three columns. English words and phrases are listed in the left column. Target language translations are located in the middle column. A situation may occur, when the person you are speaking to cannot understand what you are trying to say to them. In these cases it may be helpful to point to the word or phrase so he/she can read it in the target language. The right column contains the transliteration of each word or pharase. i.e., pronunciation of the same target language words and phrases. The transliteration and pronunciation guide work together. The LSK comes with a CD and/or cassette containing sound files of the target language words and phrases mentioned above. After each English word or phrase, the corresponding target language words and phrases are read twice by a native speaker of that language, first at a normal speed, and second much slower, pronouncing each syllable. Try to repeat these words and phrases after the native speaker as you follow along in the book.

The Language Survival Kit contains a 22-chapter book, audio CD and a Command and Control card for quick reference. Each chapter in the LSK deals with a different topic which is represented by a tab located at the bottom of the. To use these tabs, decide which chapter on the front cover you wish to use, then flip through the book to find the corresponding tab.
