9. APPENDIX
9.1 Field Observation Source: On 13th July 2008, our group met up on a Sunday morning to conduct our field observation. We got together at Orchard MRT station and planned our itinerary for the day. The field observation covered several public places, some of which are included in our group’s route for the proposed journey. Our first stop was the playground at Paragon Shopping Centre, where we planned to observe children’s public conduct with their parents present. A group of children was trying to climb the merry-go-round while it was still moving, which was not safe as we noticed them pushing and shoving each other. However, the parents there did not seem to see the danger that this posed and just stood by and watched.
In addition, there were two boys who were running and screaming outside the designated playground area, and instead played underneath the escalator. There were several adults present, yet none of them
II
Our next stop is Forum Shopping Centre by bus. As it was a Sunday, the bus stop was crowded and it was hard to get onto the bus because the people there were obstructing the way. Furthermore, we noticed that people did not queue up to get onto the bus. There was even some pushing and shoving as people boarded the bus. At Forum, we saw more acts of parents condoning their children’s misbehaviour. Two children were running after each other in the middle of the mall, while another boy was playing with the ATM machine. We noticed that their father was busy with his handphone all the while.
A boy climbed onto a stage despite the sign that disallowed this. The adult with him did not stop him from doing so.
We also saw adults with a child not displaying the right etiquette on escalator of keeping to the left side to allow others to walk by. Also, there was a father carrying his daughter on his shoulders. What was seen as a sweet action was, in fact, dangerous.
III
Botanical Garden was our next destination. At Swan Lake, people tried to get the swans’ attention by splashing water onto them, throwing twigs at them, and even shaking the tree near to them.
A consoling observation was that there were many families having picnic and playing games in the open area of Botanical Garden. It was definitely a good place for a day of games and outdoor lessons. We then took an MRT ride along the East-West line to observe commuters’ public conduct. Some misconduct that we noticed were people standing by the door and blocking the entrance, putting bulky items near the door, sitting down on the floor and obstructing the way, and a boy leaning on one of the poles.
After consolidating all our observations, we ended the field observation

* Open-ended questions:
Question 1: What is the greatest worry from you as a parent if you allow your children to participate in this tour? Please elaborate why.
Most popular response was that safety is the worrying issue Below are some of the responses
•
I cannot entrust my children to the ones I don’t know.
•
I don’t think the student’s age of 16, 17 cannot ensure safety to my children, especially in large groups.
•
If I don’t know anything about the students who will be guiding my children in the tour, I won’t let my children participate in the tour
•
Even we, parents have difficulties in ensuring safety for our children, how can trust others to do so. They are not teachers and have little knowledge in this area.
XVI
Question 2: What do you think is most difficult to deal with your child when he/she misbehaves?
This question receives many different answers such as:
•
I find it hard to correct their children misbehavior
•
Scolding may have negative impact on my child’s mentality, but without scolding, my child will not remember what he has done wrong and usually tend to repeat the same misconducts.
•
We do not have time to deal with the children properly and we are too busy to learn how to deal with the children.

9.4 The report on ACJC Interact Club Outing Science Centre Excursion with “Life” Children Report “Life” is a child care programme under Beyond Social Services. It is for primary and secondary school children who come from low income, broken or abusive families. They provide food sponsored by kind volunteers and homework coaching by student or adult volunteers daily. Anglo Chinese Junior College Interact Club is one which participate actively in the children’s homework coaching from Tuesdays to Saturdays afternoons. The Interact Club has planned an outing during the June holidays to enrich the children with issues relating the environment.

9.8 Dry Run On 6th June, We carried out a dry run on our activities, which is to allow children between the age of 8-10 to learn public conduct and behaviour in an interesting way. In order to make this dry run more realistic, we got 6 children from my group members. These children are either their niece or nephew of my group members. Firstly, we met outside Fairfield Methodist Secondary School. After knowing the children a little and distributed the worksheet.. Our group proceeded to Shaw Tower’s cinema by taking bus 14. On the bus, as the children were still quite unfamiliar with us, they remained silent and were at their best behaviour. After we arrived at the cinema, we went to purchase tickets for the movie ‘Kung Fu Panda’. Before entering the cinema, we let the children know that we should speak softly in the cinema and should remain at our seats at all time unless we need to go to the toilet. The children were behaving very well at the start of the movie. However, at the midst of the movie, a child shouted Dawn’s name as the child needed to get something from Dawn. Even though the children were laughing loudly during the movie, we do not include this behaviour as a bad conduct because it was a comedy movie. A bad point was noted when the children were laughing and kicking the chairs in front of them at the same time. After the movie, our group sat outside the cinema to allow them to fill up the worksheet. After which, we went on to Forum’s Macdonald by foot. Upon arriving at Forum Macdonald, We stood outside the Macdonald and taught the children to be polite by saying ‘Thank you’ after ordering the food and being responsible by clearing their tray after eating. We stood outside for quite awhile as seats were tough to find during lunch hour. We finally got our seats and the children went on to order their food.
XL
We noticed almost all the kids remembered their task while some only remembered after they left the counter. However, those who forgot the task quickly went back to the counter and thank the person. After eating, only one child forgot to put back his tray. Only when his sister reminded him, he then went to put back the tray.
On the way to Botanical Garden, the kids got more rowdy as they were more familiar with us. Thus, while on bus 77, some were talking very loudly while some kids were quite playful.
After we reached Botanical Garden, we brought the children to a field and had a picnic there. We distributed snacks to them before carrying out our next activity. While my group member was teaching the children not to pluck flowers and litter in public places, I distinctly noticed that a few kids were not listening to my group member, as the children were busy eating their snack or looking at the swan in the lake. This causes some children to be unable to fill up the worksheet and they have to come up to us and ask for answers. As we were about to leave for our last station, we saw that there were wrappers on the field. The children only came back to clear up after we have reminded them. After which, we headed back to Fairfield Methodist Secondary School to carry out our last activity.
As we were not allowed to enter the school, we proceeded to a void deck opposite the school to carry out our activity. We briefly summarise what the children have learnt today. However, we did not carry out a skit on the correct behaviour on public transport because we do not have the materials. Thus, we taught them verbally so that they can complete their worksheet. Most of the kids were tired after a day of activities and thus, while we were summarising what they have learnt, they were not paying attention to us. After which, we ended the dry run and the kids were brought back home by my respective group members. XLI

Ice-Breaker Games
Chain of Names 1. Gather group to sit down in a circle 2. The game will begin with a participant sharing his name with the group, E.g. Alex. 3. Next, the participant next to Alex (either on his right or left) e.g. will have to first introduce his name, e.g. Ben before saying Alex’s name. So, it will be, “Ben, Alex.” 4. Followed by, e.g. Charles, Ben, Alex... The aim of the game is to get everyone familiar with one another’s names.
Duck-duck-goose
1. Gather group to sit down in a circle 2. Volunteer a participant, e.g. Ann, to spearhead the game 3. Ann is required to say out “Duck-duck-goose” before calling the name of another participant, e.g. Ben, in the circle. 4. Ben will have to stand up and chase Ann before he/she finds a place to sit down. 5. If Ben fails to catch Ann in time, he will have to take over role of calling, “Duck-duckgoose” followed by another participant’s name, e.g. Carl. 6. However if Ben succeeds in catching Ann, Ann will have to presume her role and call out another participant. The aim of the game is to get participants to have fun and interact with one another.
