STATISTICS- is the science and art of learning from data DATA- are numbers with context PROBABLITY-is the study of chance behavior POPULATION-large group of individuals-people, animals, or things-based on information about a much smaller group SAMPLE-smaller group of individuals DATA BEAT PERSONAL EXPERIENCES- statistical data is and proves to be much more reliable than personal experiences AVAILABLE DATA-are data that were produced in the past for some other purpose but that may help answer a present question SURVEYS-are popular ways to gauge public opinion. The idea of a survey is pretty simple: a. Select a sample of people to represent a larger population b. Ask the individuals in the sample some questions and record their responses c. Use sample results to draw some conclusions about the population
9. OBERVATIONAL STUDY-we observe individuals and measure variables of interest but do not attempt to influence their responses 10. EXPERIMENT STUDY-we deliberately do something to individuals in order to observe their responses
