BRIEF HISTORY • British sent explorers, established

settlement in 1789 to assist ships in distress

• Cellular jail (Kala Pani) established to imprison freedom fighters

FLORA & FAUNA • Forests cover 86.2% of the total land area

– 26 varieties of rodents – 14 species of bats

• 270 species of birds • 225 species of butterflies, including

10 endemic • Reptiles like salt water crocodiles, Olive Ridley turtles, Green Sea turtle, etc – Karmatang Beach is a turtle nesting ground

ATTRACTIONS Cellular Jail – British prison, now declared a National Monument. Daily sound and light show chronicles history. Also a museum and art gallery.

Chatham Saw Mill – Oldest and largest in Asia. Destroyed in WWII, revived in the 1950s.

Mount Harriet Highest peak in South Andaman. Ideal for trekking, picnics and bird watching

Corbyn’s Cove – Port Blair’s only beach. Ideal for swimming and surfing

Viper Island – Old British jail used to harbour convicts. Gallows can still be seen here.

Ross Island – Administrative capital during the British Raj. Important ruins include the church, cemetary, Chief Commissioner’s residence, etc

Gandhi Park - Children's park, amusement park, entertainment park, deer and bird park, water sports, nature trail,, lake, garden, restaurant and Japanese temple, as well as a bunker.
