Analysis Martin Luther King (1929-68) was a Baptist minister in America and became a spokesperson in the civil rights act. He was involved in the civil rights movement (1954-68), the I Have a Dream speech and much more. He is a powerful character and we can see this in his I have a dream speech. Martin Luther king JR stood up in front of the Abraham Lincoln memorial in Washington D.C In front of 250,000 people, mixed with African Americans and White Americans. King made mentioned, “One hundred years later the Negro still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself in exile of his own land.” This gives us the feeling that they weren’t at home in their own homes. This was a common feeling in the African American community and was forced upon by the White American community. Martin Luther King JR was a powerful character as he stood up against White people when nobody else would and made a stand. King would often be belittled and downgraded but he did not crave, we can see this in his speech. We can see this when he says “Now it’s time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation of the sunlit path and racial justice” in the 6th stanza. In the first stanza, first line King related his speech back to Abraham Lincoln’s speech using “Five scores age”. He did this because Lincoln ended slavery. King was then trying to end segregation among White people and African American people. King was a powerful character in the 60’s and continues to be a powerful character in history.
