Ganesha the Lord of Success VOL: 2 ISSUE 62

When statues help Whatever be the political motive behind the sudden bonhomie between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka with a statue of Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar being unveiled in Bengaluru 18 years after its installation and that of Kannada poet Sarvajna in Chennai four days later, the move towards reconciliation between the two neighbours deserves to be welcomed. However, the two states have had such a bitter relationship that mere cultural symbolism may remain just that if proper follow-up measures are not taken. With both the DMK and the BJP having exploited issues of divergence to raise temperatures on their sides in the past, it makes one wonder whether there is more to the sudden show of love between Chief Minister Karunanidhi of Tamil Nadu and his Karnataka counterpart B.S. Yeddyurappa than meets the eye. Recent reports that Mr Karunanidhi is building bridges with the BJP to spite the Congress and to seek to improve his bargaining position within the UPA may well be the motivation for the move. The wily octogenarian has much to lose by drifting away from the UPA and this show of love for the BJP may well be mere tokenism. In that event, the new-found bonhomie may stand exposed when the time comes to hammer out a solution to the contentious issue of sharing Cauvery waters which arouse passions in both states. So often in the past, when the differences on the issue come to the fore, theatres playing Tamil films are the target of Kannada protesters in Bengaluru and buses from Karnataka are targeted in Tamil Nadu. It would be interesting to see how things play out this time around. If the two chief ministers are serious about mending fences, they must rise above local politics and show a spirit of accommodation on the Cauvery issue. The famed river can be harnessed very effectively to mutual benefit if this happens. It would be a matter of deep regret indeed if the current statue swap turns out to be a mere mutual exchange of goodwill sans substance.

Ganesha — the elephant-deity riding a mouse — has become one of the commonest mnemonics for anything associated with Hinduism. This not only suggests the importance of Ganesha, but also shows how popular and pervasive this deity is in the minds of the masses. The son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha has an elephantine countenance with a curved trunk and big ears, and a huge pot-bellied body of a human being. He is the Lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. He is also worshipped as the god of education, knowledge, wisdom and wealth. In fact, Ganesha is one of the five prime Hindu deities (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga being the other four) whose idolatry is glorified as the panchayatana puja. Ganesha's head symbolizes the Atman or the soul, which is the ultimate supreme reality of human existence, and his human body signifies Maya or the earthly existence of human beings. The elephant head denotes wisdom and its trunk represents Om, the sound symbol of cosmic reality. In his upper right hand Ganesha holds a goad, which helps him propel mankind forward on the eternal path and remove obstacles from the way. The noose in Ganesha's left hand is a gentle implement to capture all difficulties. The broken tusk that Ganesha holds like a pen in his lower right hand is a symbol of sacrifice, which he broke for writing the Mahabharata. The rosary in his other hand suggests that the pursuit of knowledge should be continuous. The laddoo (sweet) he holds in his trunk indicates that one must discover the sweetness of the Atman. His fan-like ears convey that he is all ears to our petition. The snake that runs round his waist represents energy in all forms. And he is humble enough to ride the lowest of creatures, a mouse. The story of the birth of this zoomorphic deity, as depicted in the Shiva Purana, goes like this: Once goddess Parvati, while bathing, created a boy out of the dirt of her body and assigned him the task of guarding the entrance to her bathroom. When Shiva, her husband returned, he was surprised to find a stranger denying him access, and struck off the boy's head in rage. Parvati broke down in utter grief and to soothe her, Shiva sent out his squad (gana) to fetch the head of any sleeping being who was facing the north. The company found a sleeping elephant and brought back its severed head, which was then attached to the body of the boy. Shiva restored its life and made him the leader (pati) of his troops. Hence his name 'Ganapati'. Shiva also bestowed a boon that people would worship him and invoke his name before undertaking any venture. However, there's another less popular story of his origin, found in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana: Shiva asked Parvati to observe the punyaka vrata for a year to appease Vishnu in order to have a son. When a son was born to her, all the gods and goddesses assembled to rejoice on its birth. Lord Shani, the son of Surya (Sun-God), was also present but he refused to look at the infant. Perturbed at this behaviour, Parvati asked him the reason, and Shani replied that his looking at baby would harm the newborn. However, on Parvati's insistence when Shani eyed the baby, the child's head was severed instantly. All the gods started to bemoan, whereupon Vishnu hurried to the bank of river Pushpabhadra and brought back the head of a young elephant, and joined it to the baby's body, thus reviving it. Ganesha is also the destroyer of vanity, selfishness and pride. He is the personification of material universe in all its various magnificent manifestations. "He is both the beginning of the religion and the meeting ground for all Hindus." The devotees of Ganesha celeberate the Shukla Chathurthi in the Tamil month of Avani as a festival to celebrate and glorify him is known as Ganesh Chaturthi.

Consumer Beware This is that time of the year when you find it extremely difficult to resist the temptation to go on a holiday. People you know are either planning a holiday or already packing their bags. To make matters worse, travel agencies and tour operators bombard you with advertisements of dream destinations. You can opt for the snow-clad mountains, or the sandy beaches, or choose an adventure-filled holiday. You can avail of the innumerable choices within India or abroad—the options are unlimited and the package offers, alluring. H o w e v e r, before you give in to that wander lust and write out that cheque to the tour operator, I would suggest certain mandatory steps. First and foremost, visit the Tourism Ministry’s w e b s i t e (http://tourism.nic.in), and click on the icon that says "approved list". It opens up a list of travel agents, tour operators and even adventure tour operators approved by

the ministry. You get their telephone numbers, their addresses and their email IDs. So choose those in your city from the list and begin from there. The next step is to compare package tours, including prices for the destinations that you have chosen. You can do that on the telephone or on e-mail. However, always note the name and designation of the person that you have spoken to. This is important because many times, there is a wide gap between what is promised and what is delivered. In fact, when you finally opt for a package tour, you must make sure that the promises made verbally are actually in the written contract. I say this because in a case pertaining to a time-share resort decided by the national consumer disputes redressal commission recently, the company argued that the promises made by an employee, who was their sales manager, were not

binding on it because it was not in the written contract entered into between the parties. Once you have zeroed in on an agency—be it for a package tour abroad or within India—be sure to work out every detail. Let there not be any ambiguity — either in the tour programme or in working out the cost. Foreign trips, tickets for boat rides, art galleries and museums are all expensive. Does the package include those costs too, or do you have to pay for them? Do not go by verbal assurances and work out the total cost, including the service tax. Let there not be any surprises at a later stage. Do not be in a hurry to sign on the terms and conditions. Read them carefully and ensure that all travel details are put in writing. If in case of an unforeseen circumstance you are forced to cancel or postpone the trip, make sure that you are entitled to a refund. So check the refund policy of the company. These

precautions are absolutely necessary to ensure that you are not taken for a ride by the tour operator /travel agent. Unfortunately, there is no Ombudsman for the travel industry. If tourism is to flourish as an industry, there should not only be stringent quality standards for all service providers in the sector, but also a system of Ombudsman to resolve disputes between clients and service providers. Customers, in fact, should demand this. But don’t lose heart. If your holiday is ruined because of the negligence of the tour operator, or if the package tour is not of the standard or quality promised or advertised, you can always seek redress through courts. These forums may not be as quick as they were meant to be, but they have come to the aid of tourists who have had a raw deal, and sent out a clear message to the tourism industry that they cannot take consumers for granted - Pushpa G

Let’s pledge... Looking back into the history of nations, one can hardly find the m a t c h l e s s determination, persistence and infinite hope that was based on only a vague idea, a mere fantasy, which, when touched the hearts and minds of people, turned to reality. S u c h a resolution was never shown by the world, never seen by it and certainly never encountered by it before. So, it was definitely not unexpected that the strength of the enemy broke down under the heavy burden of such a pledge. A pledge , written with every warrior’s blood, a pledge formed by the bonds of the wounded, a pledge carried by every martyr, every soldier, every person, a pledge so deep a part of everyone’s soul that it needed no words of explanation. Such was the pledge that

redeemed the status of a c r u m b l i n g c o m m u n i t y, disintegrated the convoluted plans of a ruling state and left the world awestruck by its success. To d a y w e f i n d ourselves dwelling in the reward this pledge has granted us with. The grandeur of this reward is such that every other reward is shadowed by its magnificence, every other beauty is eclipsed by its splendour, every other glow of hope dimmed by its radiance. This is the reward of the exhilaration when a bird can fly unhindered in the vast open sky, a reward of elation when a prisoner is finally able to walk out of his prison as a free man, a reward of ecstasy when an innocent gets justice. This is the reward that every person, community and country wants to live with, this reward is freedom. This reward is India. Let us pledge to cherish and nurture this precious reward. - S.Raghunathan
