California Alpha Strikes Gold at General Headquarters Convention
The eight awards bestowed upon California Alpha this year
Brothers, It is with much pride and sense of accomplishment that I announce the achievements of California Alpha at this year s convention in Marina del Rey. As many of you know, our chapter has worked hard to sustain its progress and momentum; what many of you may not know is that our chapter is now regarded as one of the best chapters in the nation. At convention this year, chapter delegates Mike Ewing 04, Ryan Sandvig 04 and Glenn Carrere Jr. 07 accepted a total of eight awards highlighting our hard work. We received the Community Service Citation for exemplary work with the environment and community and Risk Management Recognition for our attention to safeguarding our chapter and its residents. We received the Hayward S. Big-

gers Ritual Trophy commemorating our adherence to the highest standard of fraternity ritual and an honorable mention for the most Outstanding Recruitment Presentation. Not only that, our tireless housing corp. was cited with two honorable mentions: Best Exterior Project and House Corporation of the Year. These awards were due to the incredibly successful fund-raising effort on the part of our chapter alumni and the many physical improvements made to the house in the past two years. Fundraising efforts continue as we make a push to fully refinance the outstanding debt on the house. This was the challenge posed by one very generous alumnus who has matched all donations and interest-free loans collected to date on a dollar for dollar basis. For details on how you can become a part of this historic effort and help us to achieve

[email protected]. Finally, it is my particular pleasure to announce the attainment of the fraternity s two highest awards: the General Headquarters Trophy and the Gold Star. These two awards and in particular the Gold Star (which is returning to us after a decadelong absence) recognize those elite chapters that go the extra mile in meeting and exceeding the fraternity s standards of excellence. Please join me in celebrating California Alpha s place in that elite group. We are all so proud! Yours in the Bond, Mike Ewing 04 Chapter Advisor

Not only did we win eight individual rooms, which brings awards from General Headquarters fresh last semester, we also finally achieved our goal of winning the Gold Star, the most prestigious award given to a chapter of Phi Delta Theta. community. We already have members working for the Inter-Fraternity Council, the ASUC senate, the Resident Assistant program for campus dormitories, and the Health Worker program for the Greek community. We have already effectively reached out to the campus community and hope to continue this tradition in the coming semesters. Phi Delta Theta will more than ever stand out as the pillar of excellence against which all other fraternities are measured.
While awards, home improvements, and public relations remain concerns of California Alpha, they all mean nothing without the recruitment of outstanding men of character to fill the walls of the chapter house. There is no doubt in my mind that Phi Delta Theta will emerge unscathed and victorious in our quest to recruit capable men for the fraternity. 2004 Home Football Schedule
Alumni Events The 2004 Cal football season is upon us and, as usual, we will be having game day BBQs at the Chapter House at 2726 Channing Way before and after every home football game. As we go to print, Cal is coming off a 56-14 victory over Air Force and enjoys a #12 national ranking. If you and your families will be in Berkeley to attend any of the four remaining Cal home games, I invite you to stop by the House for some food and soft drinks before heading up to the stadium. This is also a great chance to see your fellow alums and to meet our current members. We also have 3 parking spots available at the house on a first come, first serve basis. The cost will be $20 a space.

Fall Rush 2004 Brothers,
California Alpha Association Board of Directors
California Alpha finds itself at a very important crossroads in its existence in fall 2004. As always, recruitment is central to the future of the fraternity, and the caliber of the events held during the formal Rush Week in addition to the planning that has been put into continuous open bidding efforts bode well for Phi Delta Theta. There was a number of very successful rush events. Drawing upon the example of last year s Fall Hog Roast and Spring Music Fest, we combined the themes of good food and music to produce an event this year with a fifty-pound pig and My Two Friends, voted Best Band of Berkeley for 2004. Two hundred people were in the house and on the front and back decks at any given time, and both the aroma of roast pork and the sweet notes overpowered anything the other fraternities on Channing Way could offer. Because of tighter university restrictions on rush activities, we decided to implement a

This not only had the effect of broadening our base of rushees, but also allowed us to meet a large population of students on a more personal level which has since given us the familiarity to invite them to ongoing recruitment events.

Founders Day 2004 Celebration a Success The annual Founders Day event, held April 24 this past spring, was a tremendous success. We started the day with the traditional active/ alumni golf tournament at Tilden Park. After a nice morning of leisurely but competitive golf, we journeyed back down the hill to a BBQ at the house and ended the afternoon with the Founders day ceremony itself, honoring several of our distinguished alumni.
