Mechanism of action and indications (Why med ordered) Antagonizes the effects of histamine at peripheral histamine-1 (H1) receptors, including pruritus and urticaria. Also has a drying effect on the nasal mucosa. Indicated to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and for the management of chronic idiopathic urticaria.

Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions .contraindicated in hypersensitivity. Use cautiously if there is impared renal function. Common side effects No common side effects

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) Apple, orange, and grapefruit juice decrease absorption and may decrease effectiveness

Lab value alterations caused by medicine Will cause false-negative reactions on allergy skin tests; discontinue 3 days before testing Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication h c a r e p r o f e s s i o n a l i f s y m p t o m s p e r s i s t .
