FROM THE PROSTHO FILES

CASE SUMMARY: Full Mouth Rehabilitation by Dr. Brent Rigby, Prosthodontist Before

Patient “Lisa” was referred to me due to her complex dental needs. She has an inherited birth disorder called Ectodermal Dysplasia. The ectodermal dysplasias involve defects in the hair, nails, sweat glands, and teeth of the individual affected. Lisa wanted to correct her obvious dental problems but also wanted to “appear normal” and have improved self-confidence when out in public. As a Prosthodontist, I have experience planning multi-stage treatment plans over several months, and can coordinate with a patient’s general dentist and other dental specialists. This oral rehabilitation required a team of dental specialists including: an Orthodontist, an Oral Surgeon, and me as the Prosthodontist leading the treatment plan to properly restore the oral condition and function. For each complex case, I go through the following steps: • Thorough diagnostic work-up involving a comprehensive exam, photos, wax-up and jaw records to determine which course of action(s) is appropriate and best long-term for the patient. • Presentation of treatment options and discussion with
each patient to explain the pros and cons of each treatment course. • Then performing the treatment with a temporary and final prosthesis. Many hours of time and meticulous work went into this case for the final results obtained. The final prostheses delivered were segmented bridges (a metal substructure with overlying ceramic) that were permanently attached to 12 underlying dental implants.

FROM THE PROSTHO FILES Continued from previous page — Lisa’s final photos & biggest challenge… After

My multidisciplinary care approach, for patients such as this, is essential in obtaining the best results. As you know, I routinely communicate and build relationships with other dentists and dental specialists in our community to improve the overall results for our patients. The biggest challenge, but what was needed with this case, was coordinating treatment between multiple offices over several months. For complex cases, it’s crucial to plan effectively, create backup treatment options, and have someone “quarterback” the process. In the end, none of us can take all the credit, and the best thing is that another life is completely transformed, as you can see from this comparison… Before

After

I refer patients back to their general dentist for regular hygiene, unless advised otherwise by the referring office, depending on the patient and treatment. If you have questions about my prosthetic protocols, please call my office — or email me at: [email protected]

How can a Certified Prosthodontist assist you and your dental team? I specialize in the treatment of complex cases, usually involving several procedures over months of care. The next time you see a challenging case, please feel free to call me and we can discuss treatment planning or I can help you with any part of the treatment. My goal is to be a resource for your office by helping manage difficult and time-consuming procedures, restoring the function and esthetics that the patient desires, then referring them back to your office for their ongoing care.
