American India Foundation • The Genesis – Started after the Gujarat Earthquake in 2001 by Indian-American community in US with former US President Bill Clinton as the Honorary Chairman – Secular organization with an all-India focus • Mission – The American India Foundation is devoted to accelerating social and economic change in India • Areas of our work – Grants making for Livelihood & Education – Implementation of Digital Equalizer, Service Corps and League of Artisans Programs

Digital Equalizer Program • DE Approach – Promote the proficient use of technology in under-resourced schools – Ensure the program’s long-term access and sustainability – Universalize the DE model to extend its reach throughout the country

Digital Equalizer Program • Key Milestones till March 2006 – Approx. 200 centers have been established in 12 states – Over 2800 teachers and 90,000 students have been trained – About 80% of the students are conversant with usage of Office tools and vernacular fonts to create content – At least 40% of the students can use internet and emails to tele-collaborate with students in other countries

DIGITAL EQUALIZER PROGRAM
Who makes it happen School Management: Commitment to the DE Program, Regular check on status and progress of the program. School Teachers: Active participation in the program, showing keenness to learn, looking for creative ways to use computers as a teaching-learning tool. DE Coordinator: Prime link to the school, delivers teacher training, monitoring and mentoring. Facilitator: A dedicated resource responsible for operation of DE center, performing system administration tasks, and assisting with the faculty and student training.

Teacher Training Plan • 3 years of continuous training • Training components are scheduled on weekly basis for an expected 28 working weeks in a year • Once a week training session by DE Program Coordinator for a minimum of 2 hours • Practice during the week under the guidance of center facilitator • 2 DE periods per week per class for delivering curriculum topics using Curriculum software/ presentations by the subject teachers • Unit wise & Year end assessment

• DE Lab management – Basic system handling & maintenance • Basics of computers & windows – Hardware, Software & Operating System • MS Paint – Graphics

• Vernacular Software – Question paper, Letter, Newsletter, Presentation, etc

Students Training Plan • The student training plan would be designed in accordance with the existing school syllabus. If the school syllabus is not adequate or updated, new modules would be introduced • 2 DE periods per class per week for curriculum learning (facilitated by the subject teachers) • Project Based Learning • Contest Participation • Tele-collaborative Projects

Deliverables for the school • Every teacher has to prepare a minimum of One (1) PowerPoint project per quarter • To encourage and support students for active participation in the DE contests • Active participation in Tele-collaborative projects along with students • Implementing Project Based Learning • Preparing question papers, attendance, newsletters & exam result analysis using computer and presenting it to the school management

Assessment Process The objective is to assess the progress of DE program in the school and define them as follows: Teacher Assessment Student Assessment Program Assessment School Assessment The school has to effectively complete 3 Levels to be declared a “Digitally Equalized” center.
