Bryan Slominsky 10w2 Nach Monarchy Project

Monarchy is not only wrong in my opinion but also morally and in a sense legally. The Torah even says that monarchy is not the ideal form of government for Jews, but if we want one there are strictly enforced rules that all kings and queens must abide by. With the power that comes along with being a king more often than not the king will not follow these rules. Kings are dishonest, unruly and ineffective. A good amount of them even go mad with power and money; clearly they are not fit for ruling countries. Throughout history there are hundreds of kings who were terrible people and rulers and this is true every country, kingdom or dynasty not only the Jewish kingdom. Why are kings morally wrong? Kings steal and have no limits. They have power that is unimaginable that only governments with a democratic system should have. For one person to have that power is wrong because they can do almost anything although is a democratic monarchy. Some examples of terrible kings are; Ahab and Yerovam. Each of which had all the qualities of a bad king. Ahab married Jezebel(Kings I) infamous for being the wicked woman of all time; she was a terrible influence on Ahab and changed him into a terrible king. That itself was bad enough. Ahab also did one of the worst things a Jewish king can do, he not only practiced idolatry but his wife did and he made a temple for Baal. Clearly Kings are not a good form of government, although it is arguable that it was jezebel that made him bad he chose to marry a non-Jew in the first place so it must be his fault. Kings who have too much power like Ahab do things that aren’t good for their people.

Yerovam also build a strange temple. He caused all of his people to sin and is mentioned throughout the books as a terrible person. He was chose because he was a great warrior, had great leadership qualities and was a strong willed person. Seems like a great guy but when put into a position of incredible stress and responsibility he became a very wicked king; causing people to sin. Kingship is dangerous to even strong people and is again proved to be bad. I think that kingship should never have been adopted by the Jews. It really didn’t payout, out of all the kings most of them were bad kings. All of the bad ones killed, stole and did badly in the eyes of god. That is why I am against monarchy.
