AFR Retreat Worship & Prayer Each retreat will seek to introduce youth ministers to the recent worldwide renewal of interest in ancient worship practices such as daily prayer in common, celebration of the eucharist, and systematic reading of the scriptures. Historical sensitivity and simplicity of form will characterize each time of prayer with the goal that such practices can be sustained and adapted to the retreatant’s own ministry context. AFR Renewal through retreat Youth ministers, worship leaders, and other applicable vocational ministers (full-time, part-time, and volunteer) are invited to apply for a grant from the Foundation to attend a 4-day guided spiritual retreat in the mountains of south-central Appalachia. The format of each retreat will follow the traditional model of spiritual direction, fellowship with other retreatants, rest, study, and worship/prayer (see below for retreat detail). The Foundation will subsidize the cost of each retreat in whole or part based on the minister’s financial need and available funds designated for retreat grants each year. AFR Renewal through worship The Foundation will provide grants for youth ministers, worship leaders and other applicable vocational ministers to plan a personal or group visit to Johnson City, Tennessee where, during the academic year, they may experience the ecumenically-focused “Adoration” service, the rhythm of daily eucharistic celebration, meals in community, consultation with ministers and staff, enjoy recreation in the natural beauty of Appalachia, or audit a session in related courses at Milligan College, Emmanuel School of Religion, or the Emmanuel Institutes. AFR Renewal through collaboration The Foundation will maintain a web site where youth ministers can have access to continuously updating resources, curricula, discussion boards and networking information. (Continued)

A complementary area of the site will be tailored specifically for youth audiences. The Foundation may also assist by coordinating other retreat opportunities for church staff or intercongregational ministries and by providing financial assistance through special grants as designated funds are available.

Retreats are opportunities to make and foster friendships within the larger church that bring identity to one’s particular ministry at the local level. Throughout the remainder of the year, retreatants have access to special ministerial resources and networking areas of the Foundation’s web site.   
