AFFECT OR EFFECT? Practical Teaching Experience By: Jessica Beste and Bailey Goodman

OBJECTIVES 1. Students will be able to complete two online exercises to demonstrate their understanding of the differences between affect and effect. 2. Students will be able to create a blog entry to demonstrate their mastery and understanding of the terms by defining and applying the information.

IS THERE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THESE SENTENCES? 1. Staying up all night will effect your ability to function during the day. 2. The effect of staying up all night is falling asleep at your desk.

ANSWER 1 

Staying up all night will affect your ability to function during the day.



In this example, staying up is the cause of the problem.

ANSWER 2 

The effect of staying up all night is falling asleep at your desk.



In this example falling asleep at your desk is the result of an action.

WHEN DOES ONE USE AFFECT? WHEN DOES ONE USE EFFECT? 

It is important to know what powers Congress has, because it will affect your life in the near future.

Both of these sentences are correct. Work with a partner to determine why they are correct and what the affect vs. effect rule is.

AFFECT Weather conditions affect many people’s moods. Weather conditions change/influence many people’s moods. I will try not to let his words affect me. I will try not to let his words influence/concern me.
