Objectives 1. Students will be able to complete two online exercises to demonstrate their understanding of the differences between affect and effect. 2. Students will be able to create a blog entry to demonstrate their mastery and understanding of the terms by defining and applying the information.

Is there anything wrong with this sentence? 1. Staying up all night will effect your ability to function during the day. 2. The effect of staying up all night is falling asleep at your desk.

Answer 1 

Staying up all night will affect your ability to function during the day.



In this example, staying up is the cause of the problem.

Answer 2 

The effect of staying up all night is falling asleep at your desk.



In this example falling asleep at your desk is the result of an action.

EFFECT: noun – result; consequence

Effect Hillary effected a change in procedure. Hillary brought about a change in procedure.

This change had a noticeable effect on employee morale. This change had a noticeable result on employee morale.
