ADEPT 4.0 Lesson Plan Name: Emily Justus

1

Grade/Subject: 3rd/ELA

Date of Lesson: 3/21/19 Lesson Title: Point of View State Standard 11: Analyze and provide evidence of how the author’s choice of point of view, perspective, and purpose shape content, meaning, and style. Learning Objective(s): The student will be able to: Read a passage and work in a group to determine what POV the story is in and answer other POV questions. Essential Question(s)/Learning Target: How can we determine point of view? Assessment: Students will be working in groups to read a passage/answer questions. I will be using the questions as their assessment. Materials and Supplies/Technologies and Outside Resources: ● POV video ● Document camera ● Worksheet Opening: Today we are going to continue going over our testing strategies and working in our groups. Our brainpop video will be on point of view which is something we have already gone over, so this should be like a review for you guys. After we watch the video I will call everyone to the carpet and we will get started with our lesson. Instructional Input: Students will watch a brainpop video on point of view (they have been watching a brainpop video everyday this week to help them review). They have also been going over test-taking strategies this week so I will be tying that in with this lesson. Alright everyone, now that we have finished the brainpop video I will call you by table to come to the carpet. Before we go over our passage for today, I have some pictures that go along with our RELAX strategies that we have been learning for the week. I am going to have some volunteers come up to the board and place the picture next to the strategy they think it belongs. The relax strategy goes along with test-taking strategies, the students like to help in anyway they can so I added this activity to get them more involved. Great job guys, thanks for helping me! Now, today you all are going to be working in the same groups you have been working with for most of the week. I am splitting the class into different groups because I am trying to see the best way for them to work together. Our passage for today is called “Coyote Hill” and our questions for today have to do with point of view as I stated earlier. You all need to make sure that you are using your test-taking strategies we have learned this week to help you answer the questions. I will be walking around making sure everyone is staying on-task and I will also be making sure that one person isn’t doing all of the work. This is a group effort, and if you guys work really hard, I will give you some extra point! When I call your group up, you can come get a paper and get started

with reading the passage. I will give the students 10-15 minutes to work on their group test, We use a timer on the wall to let them know how much time they have left. After they are done taking their test we will go over it as a class using the document camera in the room. We talk about why some may have some incorrect answers and we will be looking at specific text evidence to help them support their answers. Modeling: I will read the questions with them while they are on the carpet so they will know what they are answering and what they should be looking for in the passage. I will also be modeling what they should have highlighted or underlined in the passage to help them after they have finished. Development of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving:

Question

Level

Why do you think the author decided to write this story in first-person point of view?

Analysis

Can you make the distinction between, first, second, and third person point of view?

Synthesis

How could you determine what point of view the story is in?

Evaluation

Guided Practice: Students working in new groups will be guided practice because they have not been doing this long. The guided practice will also be them using their test-taking strategies that we have been reviewing all week. They will also be asked to highlight/underline specific evidence from the text that helped them support their answer. Some groups will be finished before other groups so I will ask the groups that get finished early to quietly read their guided reading books while the other groups finish up. I will be grouping the lower kids with some of the higher kids to help them get a better understanding of the activity. Closure: I will be going over their test with them as their closure. Independent Practice: Being able to apply test-taking strategies and other strategies previously learned.
