translation of the shloka is: among the adityas i am visnu; among the luminaries, the radiant sun; among the (forty-nine) maruts i am marici; ** among the stars i am the moon. ** why is moon referred to as a star? is the translation of 'nakshtra' as a star fine? does this match with the today's definition of the star or moon? pranams, chakra

sasi meaning moon is not referring to one over all. thus naksatraanaam .aham sasi over all the constellations. the lord sloka as well when refering to

namaskara, i have a doubt regarding the bg chapter 10 shloka 21. the english translation of the shloka is: among the adityas i am visnu; among the luminaries, the radiant sun; among the (forty-nine) maruts i am marici; ** among the stars i am the moon. ** why is moon referred to as a star? is the translation of 'nakshtra' as a star fine? does this match with the today's definition of the star or moon?

in this section bhagavan is describing his vibhuti (hanta te kathayishyami divya hyatmavibhutayah 21:19) by explaining how he is the foremost out of various classes. in some cases the comparison is more subtle than simply biggest or best. the translation of the text you are mentioning nakshatranamaham shashi is "_amongst_ the nakshatras i am the moon." the 27 nakshatras are portrayed as the wives of chandradeva.

compare

the phrase in 21:27 naranam cha naradhipam "amongst men i am the king" the king is not the "biggest" man in the way that meru is the biggest mountain (see 21:23) but he is their leader. (and notice we use the same word pati for husband or leader.) also, although neither the gita or shankarabhashya mention it, i can't help but think there is a deeper reason for the nakshatra-chandra simile. just as shashideva is the husband of 27 nakshatras but he visits them in turn one at a time, krishna bhagavan is the lover of thousands of gopis in vrndavan but he appears in a sole relationship to each of them. -jaldhar h. vyas <[email protected]> -----------------------------message: 5 date: wed, 12 dec 2007 11:52:16 +0000 (gmt) from: latha vidyaranya subject: [advaita-l] new identity acquired? to: advaita list message-id: <[email protected]> content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 hari om namaste here, in this list, we all strive to inculcate the advaita philosophy in our daily lives striving to attain the ultimate truth. this is the spiritual side of us. there is also a vyaavahaaric face of ours that keep clinging to the present identities and also try to attain newer identities! at times there arises a clash between the two faces of ours when we wonder how do we reconcile the two?! yes, it may not be simple, yet possible. try to keep the spiritual identity intact and look upon all the worldly identities as various roles that we are playing in this big cosmic drama. put your best into those roles, play them well, entertain the audience / spectators, all the while residing in your innerself and looking at and enjoying your own roles! we do not know what the next scene is, what new facade we need to wear, how many other actors are dropped from the play and how many reach the last scene along with us! one such new identity that i have acquired is that of a blogger in wordpress. whenever i write a post i try to embed little philosophy,

little psychology, little spirituality and a big amount of entertainment to amuse my audience (the blog readers). i am thoroughly enjoying the new identity, keeping my immutable identity intact. want to have a peep into my new role? you may visit me at: http://empoweringall.wordpress.com your contribution in the form of posts, comments and feedback are most welcome there. i have not forgotten you all. just looking at life from a new perspective and trying to understand others' perspectives too. the advaitic perspective - the substratum - binds us all here. there it is only a super imposed outlook. thanks, hari om namaste --------------------------------bollywood, fun, friendship, sports and more. you name it,

we have it.
