ACTIVE
WHEELS

Ø In 2008, Michelin reinvented the wheel at the paris motor show. Ø The illustration was shown in two concept cars: Venturi Volage& WILL. Ø Venturi was made with all the four active wheels while WILL had just the two in the front active. Ø 2
What is active wheel ? ØMichelin’s Active Wheel is an intelligent wheel capable of propelling cars without gasoline. ØIt has got two motors which sit inside the hub. § one to propel the car. § another for active suspension system. 3

ACTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM Ø Active suspension system controls vertical movement of the wheels by an on boardsystem. Ø This system has the capability to adjust itself continously to changing road conditions by artificially extending the design parameters. Ø It has an extremely fast response time 3/1000 ths of a second. 5

COMPONENTS OF ACTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM 1.Sensors: various sensors installed around vehicle to monitor vehicle conditions. 2.Electronic control unit (ECU):In this microcomputer, calculations are made so as to make the necessary adjustments in the suspension. 3.Actuators: Instructions from the ECU are converted into electrical signals and directed to various

CONCLUSION § An EV can be redesigned from top to bottom since all key components— the engine, electrical suspension systems, tyre and brakes—are now integrated in the wheel. § Simplifying vehicles creates new opportunities in vehicle design by freeing styling teams from constraints previously thought to be inevitable 14
