A Simple Hat James E. Bailey 19 Oct 2008
Directions are for a medium sized head. Work more or fewer increases to fit your head size as needed. (I needed to have 128 sts.) Since this is a top-down hat, you can use whichever method (double-pointed needles or two circular needles) you prefer. I prefer dp needles. Using invisible method, cast on 8 sts. K 1 round. K into front and back of st, then pickup strand between next two sts and K into back of it, (equivalent of make 2) 8 times. 24 sts total. Place marker, K3 * repeat 7 times more. Work 2 more rounds. Increase round:* K into front and back of st, K to 1 st before marker, K into front and back of st. Repeat from * around. Continue in st st, increasing every fifth rnd until there are 120 sts on needle. (Or size needed) Optional increase: Instead of increasing 2 sts at marker, increase 1 by picking up strand between the 2 sts on either side of marker. Really only useful as a final increase.) Work to desired length, since it’s a top-down done in the round, you can try it on and see if it’s long enough. Finishing Cast off loosely. Draw beginning wool through cast-on 8 sts and pull taut.
