Text and photos by Kristin Eberts This September marks Lissa Riley’s final back-to-school season. Riley, 55, has been a special needs teacher at Beacon School in Athens, Ohio, for 17 years and will retire at the end of the school year. Among those sad to see her go will be fellow teachers, parents, and certainly her rambunctious class of eight five- to sevenyear-old boys. “My goal in kindergarten is to get the children to be able to go back into the public school Lissa Riley guides a student's hand as he learns to draw a straight s u c c e s s f u l l y,” line during a one-on-one session. Riley said. “We have a lot of behavior issues that we deal with in the beginning of the year and try to turn that around.” Riley’s students have disabilities ranging from Down Syndrome and autism to behavioral issues and other developmental delays. continued on B4
