: 3 - Cycles

Topic

: Unit 8 - The Water Cycle

Level

: Primary Four Green

Time

: 8.00 – 9.00 am

No. of pupils : 32 pupils (10 boys, 22 girls) Date

: Monday, 10 November 2008

Objectives

:

At the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to 1. Investigate how the water cycle works by using relevant material from the internet.

2. Describe briefly the processes in the water cycle such as evaporation, condensation and

precipitation by using the diagram provided.

3. Labeling and drawing the process of water cycle, including the processes of evaporation,

condensation and precipitation.

Materials

:

• Computers (to be shared by two pupils per computer)

PS 2206: ICT in Mathematics and Science November 14, 2008 • Internet connection • Worksheets Set Induction

1) The teacher shows a compilation video from YouTube “The Ocean The Lakes The Rivers by

Snider87” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDJSqdlmDu0

2) The teacher asks questions to the pupils. For example, “Where does our water come from?” or “Where do you think all the water goes to?”

3) The teacher list out the responses of the children on the board and discuss their answers briefly.

4) The pupils will be asked to surf the internet to find more information regarding this matter and to find out if their answers is correct.

5) The teacher will guide the pupils how to browse the information such that to ask the pupils to type in “What is water cycle?” or “Water Cycle” in the search box of the search engine.

6) The teacher will then guide the pupils to find the suitable website that provides the relevant

information required. For example;

7) Any other useful websites found by the pupils will be shared with the whole class.

Lesson Development: Step 1 1) Teacher asks students to go to http://www.epa.gov/safewater/kids/flash/flash_watercycle.html and investigate how water cycle process took place. This website show a demonstration by using an interactive animation that lets the student itself controls the water cycle as they learn. This can be done by clicking the ‘Auto’ button found in the oval in the lower left of the screen to automatically begin the animation. 2) While viewing the website, students can take notes using guided questions like the following: •

What the different parts of the water cycle are?

When and why does it precipitation occur?

How water gets from one place to another?

Where does the rainwater go once it reaches ground?

What happens to the vapor in the air when it gets cold?

Who needs water?

Step 2 1) For students who want detailed explanation of the processes involved in water cycle they can go to http://www.zoomwhales.com/subjects/astronomy/planets/earth/Watercycle.shtml. From here, they can

Page 4

PS 2206: ICT in Mathematics and Science November 14, 2008 copy the explanation and understand how water cycle processes take place based on their understanding from step 1. 2) Using guided questions and explanation in step 1, students in small groups will discuss the questions and they will share their answers and create the water cycle diagram by using pencil and paper (hands on approach) and they need to label each process that take place in the water cycle process.

Step 3 (class assessment) The teacher will give 2 types of assessments to the students in this step: 1) Assessment 1

• The class will be divided into groups of two. • Then

the

teacher

will

ask

the

students

to

go

to

the

website:

http://www.athena.bham.org.uk/old/WCjumbled.htm • The teacher will explain to the students how to operate the exercise on that website. • After all the groups have executed the task, the teacher will check the answers from individual groups. • Finally, the teacher will instruct the students to click on the answer button and see all the

correct answers. 2) Assignment 2 • The teacher will ask the students to do this exercise individually. • Firstly,

the

teacher

will

instruct

the

students

to

go

to

the

website

http://bogglesworldesl.com/files6/watercycle_cloze.doc • The teacher will explain to the students what their task is. • Then, the teacher will distribute blank papers to the students. • The teacher will instruct the students to write their answers on the given blank paper. The

teacher will allow those students who finished their work early to play online games regarding water cycle from the website http://kids.earth.nasa.gov/droplet.html (extension activity). • After everyone has finished, the teacher will check the answers with the whole class. 08B0522, 08B0527, 08B0532

Step 4 (Group Project) 1) In this stage, the teacher will divide the class into groups of 4. The teacher will explain to the class about the water cycle project. 2) The teacher will instruct each group to build a water cycle model (2D or 3D models). Every

group is given freedom to build any type of water cycle model. 3) The teacher will also advise them to search for water cycle models (2D or 3D models) on the

internet. Each group will be required to present their water cycle model ((2D or 3D models) in the next week’s lesson. 4) The teacher will also tell the students that the winning group will receive a price.

Conclusion 1) The teacher summarizes the lesson by showing the class another YouTube video on the

“Water Cycle Song by ScienceExplosion”.

2) The pupils will listen and watch the video at first. Then, the whole class will sing along the

song with the aids of the lyrics provided in the video. The video is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw275056JtA .
