1. 1.1
Introduction Introduction – Site Location and Context
His Highness Sheikh Hamad Khalifa Al-Thani has determined that a new airport is required to satisfy the aviation needs of Qatar in the 21st Century. The New Doha International Airport, located to the east of the existing Doha International Airport, will be world-class, state-of-the-art and efficient. The accompanying landscape design will extend this unique vision to the external spaces of the new facilities, enhancing the arrival \ departure sequence for visitors and add to the road experience for the journey to and from the new airport. The landscape approach is delivered across seven separate site facilities that range from elaborate and detailed design for the VVIP terminal and passenger terminal areas, to major road interchanges with specific planting design to maximise the travel experience, to well designed functional landscapes that provide quality exterior spaces for the airport operations and village areas. GHD will build on the concept developed jointly by OBI, HOK and ADPI to ensure that the landscape materials selected compliment the airport building architecture and take maximum advantage of the site.

Landscape Objectives
The objectives of the landscape design are: » To
create a unique landscape setting and character for all elements of the airport, promoting a high standard of amenity, aesthetics and safety. » To
achieve a functional and attractive environment for all users
» To
utilise landscape materials which do not require high maintenance
» To
create a seamless integration of architectural elements with hard and soft landscape
» To
emphasise views of the airport buildings, the lagoon and other site features
» To
create a safe and pedestrian friendly environment for people moving from car parks to the terminal and within other areas of the airport site General Comment While the landscape design for the NDIA represents a considerable undertaking in terms of landscape construction and planting, it does not match the extent of the landscape “vision”as presented on typical project imaging documents and presentation boards. We would recommend a review of the current landscape design once documentation is completed. This would enable additional landscape opportunities to be recognised and bring the overall vision closer to reality.

2.3
Generic Landscape Principles and Standards
» Planting
– GHD will select plants from the planting list supplied on the original tender drawings. Planting layouts will provide relief from the climate; compliment the architecture, topography and circulation patterns and contribute to an increase in biodiversity
» Materials – A variety of hard landscape materials, i.e. gravels, will be used to compliment the soft landscaping. Where practical, materials will be manufactured within the gulf region, and selected for durability to minimise future maintenance.
2.4
90% Design Stage – Issued for Approval (IFA)
Landscape GHD’ s 90% design stage will build on the previous 60% design stage and the concept developed by the joint design teams to develop drawings and documents that include the following Landscape plans will define areas of ground covers, lawn, shrubs, shade trees, palms and stone mulch. Landscape planting and material installation details will indicate the planting and layout method as well as installation of landscape elements across the site. Using the plant list derived from the tender documents as a guide, GHD will provide a plant palate including scientific and common names, plant characteristics, plant uses, sizes, and colored images of all plant species. Plants that do not have a proven record in the coastal zone will be noted for possible substitution with more appropriate plant species after discussion with the client. Plant spacings in some cases will be adjusted to suit the local conditions. GHD will provide updated specifications based on the original documents supplied by Bechtel OBI.
2.5
Key Landscape Areas
The NDIA ultimate development planned for 2015 will have the annual capacity to serve 50 million passengers. Key facilities within the development have specific landscape treatments and include the following; 2.5.1
EMIRI\VVIP Terminal – Facility B1100
The Emiri complex is provided separately from the passenger terminal due to the different aircraft use and to eliminate potential disruption of passenger operations. The complex comprises a pavilion, ceremonial podium apron, security station, roadways and parking set within a landscaped setting. The detailed landscape is designed to provide a setting that reflects some of the character of the natural landscape of Qatar. Planting is low, set amongst colored gravels and framed by irregular low stone walls. The adjacent car parking area is similar in character with the addition of rows of tree planting to provide shade for vehicles.

2.5.2
Passenger Terminal Frontage Road – Facility A1530
A state-of-the-art passenger complex is planned for NDIA, which features a striking man-made lagoon to compliment the “natural”bay and water setting. A variety of planted landscapes and gravel surfaces are provided at strategic locations around the terminal. The road sequence leading up the terminal will have specific landscape treatments to enhance the vehicle journey. These include blocks of varied planting groups and gravel surfaces at strategic points such as the edges of the lagoon, bridge abutments, adjacent car parking areas and terminal building frontage and sides. 2.5.3
Roads Landscaping – Facility E1400
The road circulation network for NDIA features three major transport interchanges. These form the gateway to the airport from the City of Doha. The landscape design approach includes informal groupings of trees within the interchanges while more formal blocks of palm and tree planting edge the road spaces linking the interchanges. Each roadway interchange contains a landscaped roadway entry feature as a significant component of the entry into the airport. The scope of the planting design at this point is to enhance this feature area, while the actual feature element design has not been advised as yet. At this stage the majority of the planting within the interchange areas is predominantly light tree-planting, set against the existing graded sand\soil. There are no understorey or other planted areas currently designed for the interior of the interchanges. As mentioned previously, this level of finish may need some review to provide an appropriate level of finish for a project of this scale and importance. 2.5.4
Employee Village Landscaping – Facility C5600
The employee village landscaping provides a respite from the busy day to day operations of the airport by wrapping the facility with an undulating swath of shrubs and tree planting. There are areas set aside where staff can relax in grassed and treed surroundings. Planted shrubs and trees border a large car park area with climbing plants growing up onto shade structures to further enhance the vegetal character of the facility. Shade trees set into grassed areas and a treed courtyard also compliment the employee village mosque. 2.5.5 Air Traffic Control Tower, General Aviation Terminal and Airline Operations Facility – Facilities C3100, C4700 & C2300 These three facilities feature well designed and functional landscapes designed to enhance the building surroundings. The car parking areas included climbing plants attached to shade structures and there are large islands of shrub and tree plantings. 2.5.6
Nursery Facility, Works Site and Site Office – X1900
As part of the NDIA works, the softworks contractor will provide a temporary on-site nursery, works area and associated site office facility. The area includes light construction covered areas for potting sheds and allows for expansion of the facility as required. Irrigation is to be provided for this area.
2.6
Planting Design Guidelines
The Plant List for use in the project will be selected from the existing list of plant materials on the contract documents and in accordance with established GHD and GCC region guidelines.

All species included in the plant list are to be appropriate for the region and readily available (unless marked) from local nurseries. Imported plants will only be used in limited numbers in focal areas and may be substituted with a more appropriate species where necessary. A number of plants on the plant list have been recommended for substitution with other species or varieties. This may be due to several factors; »
Plant is not suited to local conditions
»
Plant is not available locally
»
Plant is substituted by a similar species more suited to local conditions
The substitutes will be noted on the plant schedule and included as part of this report. Spacings for particular plants have also been adjusted to suit local conditions and to achieve maximum performance from the plant. Changes to planting spacings are also noted on the planting schedule included with this report 2.6.1
Plant Sizes
All plants shall conform with sizes specified in the planting schedule. The following gives a broad range of acceptable heights and spreads for key plant types: » Date
Palms will generally be 4.5m max brown trunk
» Trees
will generally be 1.5-2.0m clear trunk and have a minimum calliper (measured at 500mm above ground level) of 15mm » Shrubs
will generally be 450-800mm height (twin or multi-stemmed)
» Groundcovers
will generally range from 100mm-400mm in height and 200mm-400mm in spread depending on the species 2.6.2

2.7
Grading plans
Grading plans are not included in the landscape design documentation package. The individual facility contractors are responsible for all hardscape and surface finishes, including roads, kerbs, pedestrian pavements and retaining wall structures. As the finished landscape levels will be dependent on the level of the adjacent roads and pavements, the facility contractor is in the best position to determine the final grading arrangements in consultation with the landscape architects through the interface process.
2.8
Interface Process
As a component of the design coordination process, the contractor is required to engage in a parallel ongoing and continuous interface coordination process with all other facility contractors across the NDIA project site as warranted. This involves regular contact with facility contractors whose work coincides with landscape and irrigation infrastructure. Such contractors include but are not limited to the following; »
CP13 – Utility Systems
»
CP14 – Airside \ Landside Roadways and Parking
»
CP15 - Airport Operations Facilities
»
CP17 – Air Traffic Control and Support Facilities
»
CP18 - Passenger Terminal Complex
»
CP19 - Emiri Terminal Parking Structure and Mosque
»
CP20 – Airline Engineering Offices and Airline Operations Facility
Interface process includes the discussion and resolution of interface points such as; »
Road crossing ducts for irrigation infrastructure
»
Power supplies to irrigation equipment
»
Coordination and integration of planting with built elements
Also included in the discussion is the coordination of timelines to manage the handover process from facility contractor to CP12 landscape team of areas requiring final landscape planting and irrigation. This process should ensure a smooth transition between the various contractors interfacing with CP12, occurring within acceptable timeframes
2.9
Soil Testing
As a component of the submittal process, the contractor will submit soil analysis reports that confirm; »
The amended soil has the appropriate material additive content to be suitable for planting purposes
75/10395/34026

»
Header material
2.11 Landscape Maintenance The contractor shall commence the two year maintenance period as soon as all plantings are completed in accordance with the contract documents, and upon a Letter of Acceptance from the Engineer. During the maintenance period the contractor will provide an appropriately qualified team to undertake ongoing maintenance, replacement and\or protection of all planted material. Maintenance will include the following; » »
Temporary protection measures as required Replacement and\or treatment of damaged or injured plants (resulting from contractors operations) or as directed by the Engineer
»
Adjustment of watering basins to reflect seasonal conditions
»
Maintain weed control
»
Prune trees as required
»
Adjust tree staking as required
»
Maintain palm trees including the removal of dead fronds
»
Maintain lawn areas through mowing, trimming of edges, thatch control and aeration
2.12 PWA Presentation On April 25 2006, the JV organised a presentation to the Head of the Beautification Division (BED) of the Public Works Authority of Qatar for their information and comment. The presentation established that ownership and responsibility for Ras Abu Abboud Street would eventually pass to the BED. The BED advised on a number of points relating to the current design; »
Visual appearance of Ras Abu Abboud Street was an important issue and the design should reflect this, ie, Valve cylinder chambers exposed concrete covers should be camouflaged in some way, Grassed edges should be protected to avoid high maintenance requirements

»
Plants native to Qatar should be used in the overall design, and emphasis placed on use of rare or unusual palms on the approaches to the terminal buildings
»
Proposals for VVIP areas require enhancement
»
Ras Abu Abboud Street interchanges should include some planting in color
