A Look Back This week was a very busy week! We have certainly begun to work at a brisk third grade level. We completed Horrible Harry Moves up to Third Grade in reading this week. While working on this unit, we learned about problem/ solution, summaries, and character traits. To complete this unit, students made a scrapbook page of everything that they learned. I think you’ll be surprised at how much they have learned in such a short time! We continued our addition and subtraction strategy unit this week in math. Students were delighted to play Collect $2.00
and Capture 5 in class. Both games emphasize addition and subtraction skills and strategies. They also take a lot of thinking in order to play the game correctly! I always enjoy playing these games in class. In science we finished up a unit on
child should be able to explain all of those to you. We also started our cursive this week. Cursive practice is in a book for the first couple of months and then will continue with daily use throughout the year. Cursive is expected to be in fourth grade so we start early and practice often. We have also been practicing good behavior and listening skills this week. We move at such a fast rate that if students aren’t paying attention the first time, they tend to miss a lot of information.

We will be busy learners next week! We will continue to work on addition and subtraction strategies and practice. We will add in addition and subtraction with money amounts up to $5.00. Students will be tested over that
on their mid-year benchmark in December. I have taught the students that they have to check over subtractions in order to get them correct. I do expect them to do that on each check-up or class work. We will begin concentrating
on non-fiction stories and comprehension during reading time. The non-fiction stories connect with our plant science unit to reinforce what students have already learned. We will begin a unit in social studies on types of communities. This will kick of our fabulous unit on Missouri that

Next Week Cont. will start the following week. This is one of the best social studies units that we have! During writing we will finish up our “All About Me” papers with mini-lessons about dictionary usage and editing marks.

Classroom Help As I stated earlier, we will be beginning our Missouri unit in a couple of weeks. We typically make Missouri shaped cookies, however I will need help getting supplies or volunteers to make the cookies at home. We will bake the cookies here

at school, because we will do other things with the cookies before they are baked. Please send back a note if you are willing to donate supplies for sugar cookies or cut out cookies at home. I do have a Missouri cookie cutter! I will
let everyone know what they can bring or do as soon as I get these notes back. Thanks for your support!
