A Look Back We had a great week together! The students were very engaged in learning many new and exciting things this week. We used the entire week to study about Missouri. The students learned about the major Missouri rivers and cities. They also learned how to identify them on a map. This is such a fun lesson that all students did a magnificent job! We also learned the eight states around Missouri. So far everyone knows them! We use an acronym to help us remember them. I can’t wait for them to show you
at conferences! It’s a lot of fun. During math, this week, we worked on collecting data and graphing. This is similar to last week, however this week students developed their own survey question and wrote true statements about other students’ graphs. This lesson went very well! During reading we read the story Fly Traps; Plants that Bite Back. It’s a truly interesting story that teaches students about carnivorous plants. Most students were aware of the Venus Fly Trap; however they learned that there are many more
meat eating plants. While we were reading this story, the students wrote friendly letters to prove that it was non-fiction and to tell interesting facts that they learned. To top off the week we made our Missouri cookies. This is great and fun way to test the students to see if they remember where the cities and rivers are! I wish I had tests like that when I was in school! As you can imagine, all students passed that with flying colors!

Next week is one of my favorite weeks to teach! I love introducing research to students! We will start with science by introducing ecosystems and how they support habitats and the plants and animals that live there. Then
we will move to writing and keep the same idea by choosing habitats from Missouri and around the world to research. Students will learn different methods of gathering information and how to credit the authors. They will also be
learning how to write an interesting non-fiction paper. During math, students will be introduced to different units of measurement. We will be measuring unit our customary units and also metric units. Students will be comparing how these units are different and determining which of the

Next Week Cont. two would be better to use in certain situations. We will also pull back to graphing and use our measurement data to make more graphs. We’ll continue reading some non-fiction stories to learn more about ecosystems and how they work together. I will send home a note next week about our habitat homework that will be done at home. Students will be required to
make a diorama and presentation about the habitat they are researching. Be sure to look for that note on Monday.
Ask Me, I Know! If your child sees how important education is to you, they will make education just as important. Dr. Kathy Morrison
