First Week of School Aug 7-11 Monday:  

Get to know students names and a little bit about them through the personality survey. Break class into groups of 4 and use half-sheet graph of 4 points. Each person name a point after themselves. Then, students are asked to figure out how to name the x and y axis. They will have to talk with each to other to final commonalities in order to name and number the axes. A sample list of axes can be used for groups that are really stuck. Time permitting – introduce your personal math problem. For me, I have the students investigate how much I have to pay for my son’s daycare for the school year and how much do I save compared to a year-round employee. I introduce the problem and have groups generate a list of things that I would need to know in order to solve the problem.

Tuesday: 

Continue your personal math problem. I look back at the list the students generated of the information they need to know in order to solve my daycare problem and start giving them the information they requested if useful. Then, small groups can use the given information to start solving the problem.

Wednesday: 

Continue and finish your personal math problem and demonstrate, as a class, putting the information into a final copy. Given, Goal, Claim, and Evidence.

Thursday: 

Decorate math notebook front cover. Illustrate 8 different number facts about themselves, cannot repeat the same number. Attach to the front cover so the notebook is ready to be used for the next day.

Friday: 

Go over class syllabus. Students take notes in their notebook and turn their notes into a class brochure due Monday.

Second Week of School Aug 14-17 Monday:  

Reconnect with class brochure and practice presenting student work under document camera. True Color Survey and review of results and demonstration of the different types of graph required with the true color results.

Tuesday: 

Continue and finish true color graphing

Wednesday: 

Break class into groups and give each group a different word problem to solve and present. They will work on the problem (Wednesday) and draft the presentation using sentence starters (Thursday) and then present (Friday)

Thursday: 

Continue small group problem and presentation practice.

Friday: 

Groups use sentence starters are present their problem to the class.
