Difference between a discount of 33% and 2 successive discounts of 20% & 25% on a certain bill is Rs. 50. What is the amount of bill?  First

discount = 33%. Second discount = 20 % + 25% of 80 = 20% = 20+20 = 40.  Thus the difference is 7 when bill amount is Rs. 100. Thus bill amount is 100/7 multiplied with 50.  Thus the bill amount is : 712 answer.

A certain number of tennis balls were purchased for Rs. 500. five more balls could have been purchased in the same amount if each ball was cheaper by Rs. 15. How many balls did we purchase?  

       

Options: 12, 13, 11, 10 Try with 10, price is 50, if we try with 35, the number is approximately 14, let us try with 11. 500 / 11 = price is 45, 500/30 = 16 thus the difference is of 5. Thus answer is 11. Let us assume number of ball = X Price = 500 / X 500/X - 500/(X+5) =15 or 500 (x+5) +500x /x(x+5) = 15 500X +2500 – 500X = 15X^2 +75X 2500 = 15X^2 +75X 15X^2 +75X -2500 = 0 (divide all by 5) 3X^2 +15X – 500 = 0 (the question doesn’t have solutions).

No. of heads is 30 and number of legs is 84. some are hens and some are goats. What is their ratio?  Options:

1:3, 2:3, 3:2, 3:4.  Let us assume that no. of hens is X and number of goats is Y.  Thus X+Y = 30  2X +4Y = 84 or X + 2Y = 42.  Y = 12, X = 18.  The ratio is : 3:2 answer. www.afterschoool.tk

A coin box cont ains 50 pai se and R e 1. coi ns. Tota l nu mber of coins is 36. Total value of rupee coin s is equal t o t otal value of 50 paise coins. Find their rati o?

 Let

us assume no. of coins is X & Y.  X +Y = 36  X = .5Y  .5Y +Y = 36  1.5Y = 36 or Y = 36/1.5 = 24  X = 12 (1 rupee coins) and 24 (50 paise coin) .  Ratio is 2:1 answer. www.afterschoool.tk

A number is between cubes of 15 &16. the number is divisible by square of 12 as well by 7. what is the number?    

Option: 3469, 4032, 4045, 5249. Let us take cube of 15: 15*15*15 = 3375 Let us take cube of 16: 16*16*16 = 4096 Now let us see the option. Only 4032 is divisible by square of 12 – rest are not divisible by 12 – so no need to do any other exercise – answer is 4032). (in all other numbers, the total is not divisible by 3) (another factor of 12 is 2 – only one even number is there).

A can run 1 Km in 3 minutes 10 seconds. B can cover the same distance in 3 minutes and 20 seconds. By what distance A can beat B in 1 KM race?  The

difference of their time is 10 seconds. Thus B will run in 10 seconds:  He 1000 meters in 200 seconds thus he runs 5 meters in 1 seconds and will run 50 meters in 10 seconds (answer). www.afterschoool.tk

A man can row 5 KM per hour in still water. If the river is running @ 1KM per hour, it takes him 75 min. to row to a place and back. How far is the place?  

Options: 2,3,4,5. The average speed of the person is 5. thus he will travel in 75 minutes 75/60 *5 = 6.25 that means the distance is approx. 3.12 or 3 Km. approximate. Speed while going is 6 and speed while coming is 4. thus average speed is : ¼ +1/6 = 10/24 *1/2 = 10/48 – reverse =4.8 km per hour. Thus 75/60 *4.8 = 6 = exact answer is 3 kM. www.afterschoool.tk

I paid Rs. 6600 as simple interest. The bank charged 6% for 3 years, 8% for next 4 years and 12 % after that period (for 5 years) . What was my loan amount?  Let

us assume loan amount to be 100. interest during 1st 3 years: 18, next 4 years: 32 and next 5 years: 60. thus my interest is 110.  Loan amount is 100/ 110 * 6600 = 6000 answer. www.afterschoool.tk

A train passes a pole in 15 seconds and a platform in 30 seconds. Length of platform is 100 meters. What is the length of train?  Let

the length of train be X. Speed = distance / time. Speed is same in both the cases so:  X / 15 = (X +100) / 30  Solving this: 2x = X +100  X = 100 meters. www.afterschoool.tk

Pipe A &B fill in 30 minutes each, C empties it in 25 minutes. All are open in an empty tank. How much time will it take to fill the tank?  1/30

+1/30 -1/25  LCM of 30 &25 is 150.  Thus 5+5-6 /150  =4 / 150 or 1/37.5  Thus tank will be filled up in 37.5 minutes. Answer.

Pradeep attempts 90% questions. Out of those 80% answers are correct. Each question carries 2 marks and (-1). Pradeep gets 189 marks. How many questions did he attempt & ( what is maximum possible marks)? Options: 100, 125, 150, none.  Correct question = X, incorrect = Y  2X –Y =189 or X =( Y +189) /2  X+Y = either 100 / 125 / 150 or none.  X/4 = Y or Y +189 / 8 = Y  8Y = Y +189 or 7Y = 189. Y=27 and X = 108. thus total questions attempted is 135. 135*100/90 = 150 www.afterschoool.tk Thus maximum marks are 300 answer. AFTERSCHOOOL MATERIAL FOR PGPSE PARTICIPANTS 
