What Went On In Belgium?! 2008’s November, during the trip to Belgium, some incidents happen within the Spanish group. Firstly, on the second day of the week over there a party was organised by the teachers to let the Spanish, Belgians and Polish people have fun. However, some Spanish people were seen asking for alcohol in a bar beside the party. Secondly, the teachers were told that some Spanish people were in extremely rude way with their partners. Finally, during one of the family days mostly all of the people taking part

in the exchange went to a karaoke at night. But the party ended very badly because a Spanish student broke the toilet door and the karaoke owners called the police and wanted this person to pay the reparation of the broken door. Although all these things, nothing else went worse and many people enjoyed the trip. “It had to be a really hard smash if the door ended so badly!” said Daniel, a 4th year students taking part in the exchange.

Wall in the black field falls down Last Decmber a wall fell down at St. Patrick's school because of natural causes. We are unsure of the exact date that the wall collapsed, all we know is that there was a considerably important displacement of the wall that separates Axular from St. Patrick's. This wall is situated at the black of the "Black field", where pupils play football during playtime. As far as it is known the reason for this to happen wasn't human intention, so there isn't going to be any research. At the moment specialists are working to put it up as soon as posile so children can play there again. laura arrieta

Toledo The past 15th of March the 4th year eso students went to Toledo. In here they did different activities and visited many different places. We went to Toledo, Almagro, Toboso and many other places. In here we had the opportunity to do many activities, like walking 12km, having visit guides at night or reading de Don Quixote. We slept in different places every night. Students in the 4th year said they had a very good experience, although there were some bad moments. Some of them agreed that the fact of changing every night of hostel was a bit uncomfortable. A 4th year student says: “I would have enjoyed more the last night if the hostel hadn’t being so disastrous. macarena oliván

Wall Problem The wall, under the football pitch, stared to slowly lean over. The School had called the company Kallerterra, had them come here and see the problem and the reason for the leaning. The company had a look and they made an agreement. During the carnival (23.02 and 24.02) they came here and put metal supports in the wall, right under the football pitch to the other side. here’s hard rock on the other side which should be strong enough to hold the wall” said Natalie. Sk8in’ is not a crime Sutdents at St-Patrick’s have recently been trying to get permission to skateboard within the school limits. 4th year students started their fight by sending a letter to the school council in which they wished skateboarding was taken into account next time the school council got together to vote. However, some untrue and misleading information said by a student

has torn nearly all the hopes of being able to practice this sport apart. The causes where that, at the beginning of February, a fourth year student told his mates that he had been said they were actually allowed to skateboard. Therefore, at play time the patio was full of them. However, when Juan, the school headmaster, found

out about what had happened and that lies had been said about the subject, he was absolutely furious. As a consequence, this insensible lie has led to an uncomfortable situation in which Juan told us “you have mad your lives more difficult just because of lying”. Now, it will be much more difficult to be able to bring skateboard to school.

! Recently, a letter has been sent to the people in charge of taking care of the playtimes who are trying to figure out of a way of keeping and eye on the security while this sport is being practiced, since it is a riskier sport than the common

sports we usually practice. Moreover, it is possible that one week skateboarders will be able to practice it, and, depending of whether it works out well or not, they will decide to allow it or not. Loren Arteche

Problems in Saint Patrick’s tournament In the fourth “C’s” first football match there have been some problems because of the referee. There have been arguments because the referees haven’t seen that one goal from the third year’s team wasn’t legal and because of that they started arguing and after so many protests the referee threw the whistle to the floor and one student of the school had to be the referee. We will see what happen in the next matches. Daniel Goiria

These films are projected because they have different aspects in ethical content. For the moment, there have been three different films that all of the students have watched: The Lord of the Flies, Dead poets Society and a documentary called The Biology of Love.”They are very good because they make you think” said Marcos Areizaga from fourth of ESO.

Classes of road safety

This year the students are going to a trip to Toledo. We are going to learn about things we have taught in Spanish literature and history. We are going to visit “El corral de comedias de Almagro” it is a theatre of the end of the sixteenth century. This trip was almost cancelled because of the attitude of the 4th year students, but finally the teachers decided that the students will go to this trip. Pablo Martinez a 4th year student said “it is a very good trip and we will learn a lot about Spanish literature and history” dani dong

During the second week of January a group of people from the municipal police of San Sebastian (Udaltzaingoa) came to school and gave the 4th of ESO student’s classes of road safety to prevent us from risks and to show us the importance of respecting traffic rules. They first gave us a paper with a multiple choice, showing different situations and what we might do if they happened to us. And then we discussed about the importance of our reactions to that situations.

“We have to be conscious of what we are doing to keep ourselves safe and also what we have around” said Juan, a member of Udaltzaingoa. Sofía Tiano

White San Sebastian The first week of the new semester snow came to our city like it had never done in years. In fact, the roads were so covered in ice that buses were cancelled for a couple of days and many students were obliged to get late to their homes. Joaquin Ortueta has left the school Joaquin Ortueta, who was the general director of the school, has now left his job. He left in November, and he had been working in St. Patricks nine years approximately. The reasons why he left were that "his job could be spread between the rest of the staff" said Juan Elvira. So next year Juan Elvira will be probably occupying his office and Natalia Linares will be occupying Juan's. Inés Gaviria

General fails in Chemistry. In this term nearly all the students from fourth year that do Chemistry have failed the last exam. When they started the next unit of the book nearly all the students didn’t understand what Carmen was teaching. So they told her that she was going to quick for them and that the people that do chemistry in the other group with Reyes were going slower so they were getting better marks, but Carmen instead of agreeing with her students and go slower she continued teaching at the same speed. Eric Polvorosa a student who doe chemistry says: “I think that it would be better if we had Reyes as our teacher”. Luis Benito.

Marcos Areizaga, the new school council representative Mikel Ochoa REPLACES Alain While Mikel Ochoa was absent in the first term, Alain Bon, an ex-student from school, came to substitute 4th ESO students. Alain, a young teacher and full of passion for his job, made history lessons enjoyable and easy to follow. But as he was only substituting Mikel, he left before Christmas, the same day he turned 39. Any way, not every pupil was happy with Alain’s methods and wanted Mikel to come back. Those who liked him, such as Dani Goiria said recently “Though his teaching left a great deal to be desired, he was a very nice and affable guy!” Rocío Chillida

All the prefects of secondary have decided that Marcos Areizaga is the right person to try and obtain some improvements in the school. “It is interesting because I can help the pupils with different issues” said Marcos Areizaga, who likes his new and important role. This meeting is important because the people that attend to those meetings discuss about different issues. Jon Ander Mendizábal

No more Panga Since February you can no longer find Panga in St Patrick’s dining room trays because the parents’ council has decided to take it out of the menu because they say it has a lack of inspection. Panga, is a quite cheap fish, that is why a lot of schools all over Spain have decided to serve it to their students. Not only is it cheap, it has also got a good taste, this is why most of the children prefer it to other fish. Panga’s main reason to be cheap is that it is imported from Vietnam. Nowadays, the Mekong is full of farm houses that grow up thousands of pangas that are then exported all over the world. In theory, this fish is well inspected, but

last month, many newspapers strongly criticized this fish telling it was not healthy. This created polemic in Spain, and the parents’ council requested a supplementary inspection to

the panga in St Patrick’s. These inspections didn’t show any bad result so panga was still given to students. But, as the weeks passed more and more articles appeared on newspapers,

magazines, TVs and so on, so the parents’ council decided to take it out from the menu, even though it still appears on the menu because it hasn’t been updated. Hopefully for some, and unhopefully for others, this decision can be modified and we could eat panga in some days, weeks or in some months time; it will be the parents’ council decision. “I think the parent’s council has made the wrong decision taking out the panga, they should have taken away the fish in green sauce” says Pablo Martínez, a student in fourth of secondary school. SEXUAL EDUCATION CLASSES IN THE SCHOOL Some weeks ago, the week from the 12th January to the 16th January, three girls from the group LAHIA-NAHIA came to school to give the 4th year students sexual education classes. 4th ESO STUDENTS CHAMPIONS OF GUIPUZKOA Last Saturday, in Ibarra, the 4th Eso students won the Gipuzkoa championship of indoor football versus Anoeta. They won 4-2 and Marcos Areizaga scored a hat-trick and the other goal was scored by Pablo Santos. But we can not forget Xabi, the goalkeeper, because it was the key of that fabulous victory with really impressive saves. They only lost 3 matches of 25. The last three of them were eliminatory matches so if they lost one, they were knocked out. But fortunately, and with really amazing quality of play they have beaten all of their opponents.

DRAMA

Film Reviews Seven Pounds This is a film made by the director of “The Pursuit Of Apiñes” and placed by the same starring actor, Will Smith, who has been nominated twice for an oscar. The story focuses on an unhappy man who has made several mistakes throughout his life and has an odd secret. Due to this, he sees himself obliged to carry out a plan in order to try to change the lives of seven strangers. However, life gets tougher when he falls in love with one of them and he pays less attention to the other ones, who are united by a common theme, the desperate need of help. Seven Pounds is a dramatic film which expresses different kinds of fears, such as death, love and relationships with strangers. It is a plotdriven film and has a marvelous development and description of the main characters. Furthermore, the part of the film related to Emily (the woman Ben (Will Smith) falls in love with) is extremely realistic and enjoyable. However, there might be one clear drawback. Despite being a dramatic film, at some points the description of the circumstances are developed to an extent that they hardly allow you to imagine thee story as you would like it to be, as it becomes too straight-forward.

The curious case of Benjamin Button This film has made a very big impression on those who have seen it; it has definitely brought light into the film industry, because it is a very original film, based on something never really taken to the big screen, “The different ways of understanding life”. The story is set in New Orleans in the south of the U.S.A, where people try to survive without breaking the laws, a dream, almost never achieved. Everything begins when, Benjamin Button is born, but instead of being young and healthy he is an old and weak baby whose life is back to front.

Rated PG-13, this is a perfect film for teenagers or adults to watch alone or with their partner, due to its sensitivity.

The curious case of Benjamin Button is a dramatic and unusual film, in which it is difficult to find negative aspects. We can say; this film is the best one Brad Pitt has ever made, also Cate Blanchett gives a very good performance, in this David Fincher film.

Gran Torino This is a film in which racism is very closed hand due to the main character. The story is based on the life of an ex-soldier, (Clint East-wood) a veteran that has battled in a war in Korea and because of that he has racist thoughts towards his new neighbors, a group of Koreans that have just moved into the neighborhood. Gran Torino is a drama in which the veteran is very well characterized by a great performance by Clint East-wood. Despite being a dramatic film, the comedy plays an important role since the language used by Clint East-wood is very funny,

The children of Huang Shi This film has caused a lot of impact both because of the story it tells and because of the great performance of the actors. The story represents the life of George Hogg (Rhys Meyers), who is a war journalist and ends up in charge of an orphanage among the heartbreak of the war between China and Japan, in the 30s. "The children of Huang Shi" is a dramatic war film in which characters, mostly George Hogg demonstrate a great deal of kindheartedness, bravery and humility. The hard-hitting development of the film way be a drawback for some spectators.

However, this film is not recommended for people under eighteen due to some violent scenes.

With a MPAA rating and full of drama and war, this is a very enjoyable film that will open our eyes to the dark side of life.

The Dead Poets Society ! This is a "lm which has made me think about life and the future. The story is based in the lives of a group of boys in a private and expensive school. It is a very realistic "lm because it talks about realistic elements of life.

Mr. Keating, Neil’s teacher, told him to decide his future and do what he really likes and loves. But his father insists on him studying medicine so he committed suicide. The Wave The Wave is a recent film, it is special because it reflects in a very clear way problems of society that we can appreciate nowadays. The story is based on a group of students who start by forming an excellent group dynamic, start having problems because of the obsession they have with this dynamic, which turns to be far from positive. The film turns into a drama. The Wave is a realistic film with lots of important points shown in an outstanding way. Despite having little known actors, it is still an interesting dramatic film. The only possible drawback to this film are some of the strong points the spectator has to recover from. At the end of the film, there are some unexpected surprises. This is a film in which drama and comedy join together crating a very attractive mixture. This movie provoked a lot of interest due to the cast; the actors that star in it are Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Scarlet Johansson. The director is woody Allen. ACTION

Quantum of Solace 007

This is a great film which has provoked a great deal of interest because the new starring actor, Daniel Craig, is playing the part of the new agent. The story, like the other Bond films, is about a secret agent that has to fight against a criminal organization. The criminal organization called Quantum wants to make a subterranean tunnel to take all the worlds water. Quantum of Solace is a dramatic action film with lots of chases and non-stop action all designed for pure audience escapism. Daniel Craig plays a great role in this films interpretating the starring actor. Maybe, the only possible drawback is that there is too much action, with lots of explosions and disasters. This films can only be seen it people that are older than 13 years because there are several violence sequences and also they will not understand the conversations with the vocabulary they use. The film begins with Batman associated with Jim Gordon, the chief of the police of Gotham, and also with Harvey Dent, who is played by Aaron Eckhart, together they for a triumvirate in order to stop the Mafia lead by the Joker. The Dark Knight is a dramatic action film with plenty of action and a very good plot supported by a very good script. Heath Ledger, who died in February of 2008, recently won an Oscar for his role as this shadowy villain. It is also genuinely interesting seeing the interpretation of excellent actors like Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Daws. It is a marvellous and adult film that can be considered as one of the best films of the decade because of its magic and because of the charisma of Batman series. Transporter 3 Transporter 3 is the last film of the Transporter Trilogy. The film has provoked a great deal of interest as much of who the starring actor is (Jason Statham) as far for the film itself. Frank Martin, the ex-transporter, is forced to take up his old job again. He has to go to Odessa and take a mysterious girl with his package. Transporter three is a non-stop motion film with many stunts, escapes explosions and overall, car-chases. One more, Jason Statham plays his role very well as Frank Martin. The best feature of this film is undoubtedly its car stunts and car-chases. Its director, Olivier Megaton, made a very good film designed for pure audience escapism. The possible drawback is you don’t like the films with a spectacular rhythm. But if you are an action fan, this is the one for you! This is a perfect film to watch on a rainy Saturday as long as you are over thirteen as it is PG-13 rated. Starring Actor: Jason Statham. Director: Olivier Megaton. Time: 100 minutes. Rating: PG-13. Watchmen Based on a popular comic from the 80s, watchmen has provoked a great deal of interest in comic fans. Watchmen is a big budget film like 300, both directed by the same director (Zack Snyder). Watchmen is set in 1985 when a retired member of the watchmen is mysteriously murdered and his body is discovered by a vigilante named Rorschach who tries to solve the crime. This will involve him saving the planet from extinction. Watchmen is an action, crime, sci-fi film which will captivate you until it ends and it will bring you to a fantastic world which could end in nuclear havoc. The only possible drawback is the duration of the film (163 minutes) which can make the film a bit too long and also will be difficult for the director to make a trilogy. Rated R for full frontal nudity, sexuality, profanity and graphic violence its not recommended for children. Directed by Zack Snyder 163 minutes

Funny Games Review !

The film that provoked a lot of controversy in the late 90’s, has now returned with different actors and atmosphere. Anna, George and their son have gone out to their summer country house on holiday. Paul and Peter show up in their house just waiting to play with them a very peculiar game… Funny games it’s a suspense thriller film that captivates the audience from the very first moment and makes you feel intrigues as there are some key scenes which you can not miss. If you’re looking for a physically violent film, don’t watch this one, but do expect shocking moments. This remake is very appropriate if you want to be shocked or if you like films with unusual psycho-killers. This film has been highly rated because of its great cast and its funny plot. The story begins with two FBI businessmen talking about a crime case, which is completely incoherent and is as weird as some of the characters themselves. Burn After Reading is an unpredictable comedy, full of typical visual gags that belong to the ever-loved American comedy film industry. The cast includes such stars as George Clooney and Brad Pitt, who give extremely good performances. However, the only downside is the end as it is not very clear because of the film’s quick pace This film is suitable for everybody as there is not too much action or violence in the plot itself, and it is recommendable for the characters’ excellent performance and the curious storyline

His name is Wall-E and he is in charge of cleaning the whole city. So he spends all his time doing his job without hesitation until he fells in love with another new robot. Her name is Eva and she is sent by the humans from a spaceship with a mission: find a sign of any vegetation. Wall-E is an amusing animation full of visuals gags mixed with a really original script. Wall-E, the main character, will soon meet your love not only for the good person he is, but also for his great sense of humour brought to us by Disney and Pixar studios. In addition, this animation also mentions the environmental problems we have nowadays so that children may learn how well we have to treat our planet. With a PG rating and both amusing script and its great variety of funny moments, it is perfect to make the youngest and oldest of the home have a really good time. &'%(!"!)*+,#-./,0")1!#/2*3 This is a film which has provoked a great deal of interest obviously because of the starring actor (Benicio del Toro) who is identical to Che in real life. There are two parts in the film. Part one is called Che, the argentinian, who helps Fidel Castro to start a cuban revolution, which succeeds. But the second part, called Che guerrilla focuses on starting a revolution in Bolivia, without having many people to support them and without having enough resources to survive in the jungle and fighting against the bolivian soldiers. Che, a revolutionary life is an historic war film which really demonstrates the politic tensions and conflicts present in those times between a country and rebellions of the people. It is also very interesting seeing the main actor so identical to the figure of the Che. The only possible drawback to the film are some parts which concern the United States that are no t very clear in demonstrating their function in what may be an international conflict. With a PG rating this film is a perfect movie for people who study political history and want t know about the way of life these people had. Starring Benicio del Toro Directed by Steven Soderbergh 125 minutes Rating PG 13 Soon available on DVD.

AN INTERVIEW WITH IKER RODRIGUEZ H

e is the new I.T. specialist of the school, replacing Auritze. He has begun to work

in St.Patricks this year and he seems very happy to work here. He is only 21 and he is a total expert in I.T. He spoke to the Xanpa Times about his previous jobs, his work in St.Patricks and his aims for the future. Were did you get your knowledge of I.T. from? I studied I.T. in Cebanc in San Sebastian. Is this your first job or have you worked somewhere else? No, this is not my first job. I have also worked in Cebanc while I was studying, then I went for three months to Amsterdam and then I returned to work in Ibermática.

language facilities that you have here. If you hadn't studied I.T. what would you have studied? Well I don't really know, I also like cars so maybe I would have studied something about mechanics, but I think I made the right decision in studying I.T.

Was your school similar to this? I studied in an "ikastola" so I didn't have the same !

Do you like the people in the school, I mean, your workmates? Yes they are very nice and they have helped me in my start here. Is it difficult to deal with the school I.T. system?

Did you like I.T. at school? What were your favorite subjects at school? I hardly had any I.T. lessons at school, only like one hour per week, so I didn't have much time to enjoy them. My favorite subject was gym.

Do you like St.Patricks? Have you found your start here difficult? Yes I like it, and my start here the first months was a bit difficult.

So why did you finally decide to study I.T.? I don't think I had a specific reason, and if I had one, I can't remember it.

At the beginning it was, but now that I have got to know it no. Do you think the school has a good I.T. system or do you think it has to be improved? It can always be improved.

Has somebody ever compared you with Auritze? No. Auritze said that he couldn't develop all his knowledge in this school so he went to work for another company, do you think the same will happen to you? I don't know, we have to consider the fact that this is the maximum position that I can get in this company working as an I.T. specialist, so I don't know if my needs will grow but at the moment I'm fine here. When did Auritze leave the school and when did you begin to work here?

Auritze left the school on the 30th June last year and I began the on 15th September, when the school year had aready started.

``People here are very nice, they have helped me with my start´´

Are you planning to work somewhere else? Not at the moment. So how much time do you think you'll stay in St.Patricks? I don't know I hope I'll stay here a lot of time. Where would you like to work in the future?

In St.Patricks I'm fine so I would like to continue working here. What would your ideal job be? I don't think I have an ideal job, (jokes). What has been the most difficult problem you have had to deal with referring to I.T. throughout your career? Starting a completely new I.T. system. Is I.T. your hobby apart from your job? It was before I started working, (jokes).

Interview with Miss Susan Miss was born in London . She have always worked very hard to give better opportunities than the ones she had it to her daughter. In this interview we can see the steps of her live and how hard she had worked in her live. Do you mind if pupils call you Susan?

What is your best memory of living in Africa?

No! Of course not, it’s my real name and that is how they call me en the U.K.

There are many things but there is one which is very especial and that I will never forget. I used to go on Sundays with my dad to watch nature, the wildlife, we took photographs. It was just incredible. We used to go in a Land Rover and we went to little villages to see the conditions they lived in and how happy they lived, we liked to learn their customs.

How long have you been teaching at St. Patrick’s? Well I am one of the oldest teachers in this school. I came here when this school started and I came with teachers like Enrique and Maritxu in 1976. Who have been your best five students? Where do they work now? I can’t remember very well if it was in this school or in the English school but I know that one of them lives in New York, he is dentist and he works for famous people. Sorry I can’t remember his name. How many years did you live in Africa? I lived in Africa for 13 years. I studied in Nairobi in a boarding school; it was a convent only for girls. I lived in Tanzania and it took 8 hours by bus from Tanzania to Nairobi.

!

What is the truth about you being Miss England? (She laughs) No comments, I have never spoken about this subject and I will never do it. Why did you decide to come to this city and why did you come here? It is a bit long. Well, the thing is that I was studying tourism in the university and in the mornings I had to go to classes but then in the afternoons we had to work. I worked in a travel agency. So one day a company came to show us hotels in Spain, in Mallorca and the Costa Brava. We had to go there to know if it was good or not in

order to recommend ours buyers. So I went to the Costa Brava and I loved it. Everyday sunny, incredible temperature, very nice. When I came back to the U.K. I worked two or three months more and I decided to go to Spain for 6 months, to learn Spanish and to travel. I first worked as a nanny. It was difficult because I didn’t speak Spanish and in those days Spanish people didn’t study as much as English as now but I quickly learnt because I had to. I found a boyfriend and he had to do the military service in Candanchu and there he met people from the Basque country and they strongly recommend visiting San Sebastian and the entire coast so I came here. I liked it a lot. I first started giving private classes then they offered e a job in the English school. I said yes and here I am living in San |Sebastian and no teaching in Saint Patrick’s English school. Are you thinking in giving up teaching? What plans have you got for the future? For the moment I am ok but I would like to study a new

degree, Spanish history or go and live in Barcelona and travel all around the world.

From the English department who is the teacher you get on with best? (Tim is a good teacher isn’t he) (Laughs) Yes of course Tim is a very nice person Bruno. No seriously they are all my friends but especially Celia is very nice, she works with little children. Igone, john Philips, Reyes are also my friends.

my life. But it surprised me the political situation because Franco was in authority. It was a bit scary.

Are you affected by the crisis in the economy? What do you think people should do to solve this big problem?

When you first came to Spain did you speak some Spanish? Was it difficult to communicate with people?

I think everybody is affected in some way. For the moment our jobs are save but if that gets worse maybe the school will have to fire some of us. And the solution for this big problem as you said I think politicians should earn less money and I also think government should be reorganised.

I wanted to learn Spanish so I studied a lot and I quickly learnt Spanish. But at the beginning yes it was a bit difficult because people didn’t speak as much as English as now.

Have you ever thought of going back to the United Kingdom and teaching there?

Yes, not many times but I had already seen lot of snow here. I specially remember in 1987 more or less all “La Concha” covered in snow, people skiing on the beach that was beautiful! I won’t forget that winter because I had my shoulder broken because I fell skiing.

No, not seriously. You know when you really miss something in my case my family; it is obvious that you think of going back home but only when you miss them. It is hard to live with yours parents in an other country.

Does your daughter want to be such a good English teacher like you?

Which school in San Sebastian have you worked for? When I first came to San Sebastian I started giving private classes, then I went to the English school. I worked there for two years and since this school has been open I have been here. Did you find difficulties when you first come to Spain? I soon adapted because I had the experience of living in Africa which has helped me a lot during

!

This year we have seen a lot of snow in the school, had you ever seen that? If yes how many years ago?

(Laughs) Unfortunately she isn’t interested; although I try to convince her to come here but she doesn’t want to she said she is very happy in Barcelona. She is studying tourism like me.

In the drum parade and “big week” do you stay here and enjoy your time with your friends or do you go to England with your family? I always stay here. I only go to England in summer because it is the only time we coincide.

Do you agree when people say that the English humour is bad? (Laughs) Of course not. I think it is a very clever sense of humour. bruno santiago

a f Ra w me e n co e Th has Since Rafa left the school as the coordinator of sports, Jesús Oreia has occupied this post, after being the coach of the actual 4th years for four years. Becouse of this, “Chus” has good relationship with the pupils. Thanks to him, for example, we are playing and internal league every Fridays. The Sanpa Times met him to find out more about his Past life as a student, his childhood, Present lifestyle, his actual job, and according to the future, his future plans for the improvement of sport at school.

“I love being able to work at something related with sport, it’s very nice”

3· Were you a good sportsman? - Yes, I have always been pretty good at sports, but the one that I am best at is without a doubt, football. 4· I was wondering if you were a good student…

- I studied teacher training at the University of Mondragón for three years.

- Well, I didn’t have the reports that I had at university. I did a lot better at university than at school because I liked what I was studying whereas at school I wasn’t as good because there were subjects I didn’t like a lot.

2· And since you were a student, have you always wanted to study something related to sport?

5· Oh, I understand. But, were you one of those students that the teachers picked on?

- Yes, because sport fascinates me and combining sport with work is the best thing I could think of.

- No, I think nobody has picked on me because I always behaved well even if I wasn’t the best student.

1· What did you study?

!

6· In your present job, which sport do you like organising best? - Well, I prefer football because it’s the one I like most and I know more about it, but I also do the others happily. 7· Do you like your present job? - Yes, as I said earlier I love being able to work at something related with sport, it’s very nice. 8· Are you going to continue to be the coordinator of sports and as a coach? - I will continue coaching as long as I can because I’ve been training for four years, and I like it a lot, so I’ll try to do both.

9· I would like to know if you live alone at present? - No, I don’t, I’m living with my parents at present, but I would like to become independent soon. 10· What do you do in your free time?

- Yes I do because I like this job for the reasons I have given you before. 13· And are you thinking of introducing new “things” for the future?

- I like handing out with friends; I usually make plans with them. I also like going to the cinema, as I like watching movies a lot.

-Yes, I have a few ideas like starting to introduce sport in the second years of primary instead of waiting until third of primary, among other things 14!How do you see sport in our school at present?

11· Are you looking forward to stop being “playground guard” and concentrating in sport coordination?

- The school’s participation in sport is not bad, but in general, there’s a lot to improve.

- I’m doing both at present, and seriously I don’t dislike guarding because I’m in touch with the students. So I’ll continue doing both things until they tell me otherwise.

15· Are you thinking of reorganising your office with Rafa’s leaving?

12· So, do you want to stay in the job for a long time?

16·And what about the football pitch?

- At the moment, there are other priorities

- Personally, I’d like to change that zone, but it’s

necessary to take many factors into consideration. 17·Will there be changes in the school’s sports facilities? -St. Patrick’s has quite a lot of sport facilities, but it’s possible that in the future there will be some more, but little by little. 18·Do you have some plans for the academic future? -Yes, I have. I would like to study for the football manager’s certificate

“St. Patrick’s has quite a lot of sport facilities, but it’s possible that in the future there will be some more, but little by little” Marcos Areizaga

Interview with Tim Here we have Tim Buckwell, teacher in St. Patrick’s English School. He has been working in the school for a while and we’ve decided to make an interview about his works, impressions from the school, his school life and plans for the future. 1.Did you have any ambitions when you were a little boy? Yes, of course. When I was really young I wanted to be a football player, when I was 12-13 I wanted to be a doctor, but later I stopped thinking about that and just followed my studies.

2.In what subjects were you interested when you were in school? I was really interested in English and History, and they are still subjects that interest me. That’s because of the teachers I had; Mr. Meatyard and Mr. Joplin. They were both brilliant and creative, making the subjects come alive.

3. Did you like computers from young age? No, I didn’t like them at all, I was always bad with them. When I finished university, I was unemployed and I did a course in computers. That was the first time I had used one. 5 or 6 years ago I bought my first Macintosh computer and a whole new world opened up, I started to really like them.

!

4. Is there any special memory you have from school? I think one of my earliest memories is my first day of school. My mom had to drag me, while I was kicking and screaming because I didn’t want to go. Then she left me there and I fell in love with my first teacher Ms. Brunschill.

5. Is there something embarrassing that happened to you in school? I think those things happen to everybody. Apart from crying all the way to school, I can’t think of anything else.

6. When did you come to this school and how? I suppose this is my 5-6th year. I had heard about this school and I knew a teacher who worked here, so I just handed my curriculum, they phoned me and I came for an interview.

7. How have you progressed during your time working here?

I think that every year you learn new things, so every year you progress. I have became a better teacher, learned new techniques for teaching English and working with teenagers.

10. Have you learned something while you’ve worked here? A lot of things. Computers, Spanish, I’ve developed learnt and I’m still learning how to work with very unpredictable people.

11. Do you intend to change your job in near future? No, I have no intentions. I love my job.

12. Do you think you can run this school? 8. Did you have problems fitting in and did someone help you? My biggest problem fitting in was learning about the Spanish educational system and the system here in the school. It was difficult at first, but I have improved.

9. What’s the most interesting thing that has happened to you here? I can’t pick one thing, but working as a teacher I like that every day is unpredictable, something new always happens. Some days are better than others, but there’s always something new.

Maria Tomovska

!

In an emergency, in a short period. It’s not something that interests me. I enjoy the contact with children.

13. Do you like working with children? Yeah. Definitely. A lot…

14. Is there any place you would love to live in?

Other that San Sebastian? The Bahamas… Some place less wet, where it rains less.

15. Is there somebody who you used to admire and who influenced your decision to become a teacher?

I guess the teachers I’ve talked about before, Mr. Meatyard and Mr. Joplin, but me becoming a teacher was something I fell into, not an ambition I had.

Interviewing Josean Josean Fernandez the maths teacher who has taught t lots of students since he arrived to this school has met with The Sanpa Times to talk about his past, his opinion, his future and his experience in this school.

1-School How did you behaved when you were our age? When I was your age I behaved myself in class. But sometimes when I was with my friends they encouraged me to behave badly. What were your marks at school? I had an average of seven more or less. Where you good at math’s? I also had an average of seven in math’s because I rally enjoyed doing math’s. When did you decide to be a teacher? Why? When I was 22 I really decided to be a teacher because my brother had a friend who was a math’s teacher and he encouraged me to be one. But apart from that I was good at maths so I decided to teach it. What was your favorite subject? Why? My favorite subject was maths, because when I went to school we didn’t have subjects like physical education, music or art. And what was the subject you liked the least? Why? The one which was the most difficult for me was Spanish language because I really didn’t understand some grammatical concepts, but nowadays I still don’t understand them.

!

2-Opinion What do you think about how fourth year students behave in class? Students of your age are usually more spontaneous than they used to be. The other day when I was giving the reports one boy in your class said that he as going to be aggressive when he saw his reports, that was really funny. There is a group of boys in your class who sometimes can be a bit immature and give a bad impression of the whole group. Do you think students of my age are more problematic than they used to? Why? No, more or less teenagers nowadays and when I was a teenager we behaved more or less the same, although we had more difficulties in our life than you. Sometimes you can be less problematic than we used to be. Have you ever had a conflict with a student? Could you tell us about it? A long time ago when I joined the school one boy got a knife and said that he wanted to kill the director of the school. I can remember being inside a class with some students and the director, when the door was looked and that boy was banging the door and saying that he wanted to kill the director , that boy was really mad! Do you think life as a student is easier then it was when you went to school? Why? The level is more or less the same, you study the same things that we did except history. But one of the most important differences is that before teacher could hit us and now they can’t. What do you think about young people taking drugs and drinking alcohol? Why? It’s not healthy taking anything in addition. Drugs and alcohol are used to stimulate our bodies and if you take more than your body can take you could kill yourself. You need to be careful with drugs and alcohol. Could you define a student nowadays in one word? You are more fragile than we used to be. Your lives in general are easier than our, because when I was your age me and my friends started working and earning money. We had more financial problems than you.

!

3-Future Experience What do you hope to do when you retire? No, I haven’t planned anything, but I think I will write a book related to maths. Would you like to visit other countries? Why? I want to go to Madagascar or somewhere in Africa, because I want to learn about new cultures and to be in a place which is less crowded than Spain. When I was little I lived in Madrid which is a big city, and that was too crowded for me, so in the future I would like to go to a small city in Africa. If you hadn’t been a teacher what would you have been? Why? If I couldn’t be a math’s teacher I would like to be a musician, but I have tried to play a few instruments but my coordination was bad so I decided to study something related to math’s, and at the end as I told you before I decided to be a math’s teacher. What was the best thing that has happened to you at school? What really satisfies me is to teach maths, because it’s what I really like. Have you ever taught anything apart from maths? I taught IT, it was low level IT. Do you really enjoy being a teacher? Why? At the weekends I take work home, sometimes I have less time in class than what I need. Sometimes when I’m teaching I adapt what I have prepared for the class to make the students learn what’s one the book but faster and easier. Luis Benito. !

AN AFTERNOON WITH SOFÍA TIANO For those ones who have wanted to talk to Sofia and know more about her life since she arrived at school and never dared to do it, here you have 18 questions to know her a little bit more. She has had an unusual life, which makes her even more special and interesting, she started her life at the other side of the world and is trying to make a new one her, this fifteen year old girl has a lot to tell us...

HER LIFE IN ARGENTINA

What was Argentina like?

It’s a very nice country with lots of beautiful landscape, but it’s a pity there’s so much corruption, poverty and insecurity, any day they could kill you or attack you even if you aren’t alone.

What was your group of friends like? I had four best friends, we got on very well with each other and were constantly joking, we were all aged the same.

What type of activities did you do in your spare time? I did taikwondo and self-defense, so I could protect myself if someone attacked me one day in the street. Another thing I liked doing is riding my bicycle. I also enjoyed listening to music, watching T.V., things that teenagers normally do.

Did you go out on Saturday nights?

Has it been hard to make a new life here? On one hand not very difficult because we wanted to come, and despite the difficulties we are very happy to be here and here we have some Argentinean friends that have helped us a lot, but on the other hand, yes it has been very difficult to start again from zero.

Have you found a group of friends? Yes, I get on very well with most of the girls and I think they are also very funny.

Has it been difficult to start school in the middle of the term? Yes, it has been, and it is at the moment, because subjects are different and it' strange for me to work in this season. Teachers here ask for a lot of things that for me are complicated. For example the history teacher made me do an exam three days after my arrival. To deal with all this I have special help in maths while the others do basque, because I'm exempt from studying it.

HER HOBBIES

When we went out we went to a friend's house or to the cinema. If I was inside my neighborhood my mother allowed to stay out until 2 o'clock more or less. Some friends went to discos.

Which group do you like most?

Did you spend time with your family? Yes it was a tradition to have a barbecue at lunchtime on Sundays. And depending on the holidays of my parents, maybe we went to the north or Argentina, for example, once we went to Mendoza.

Well, I don't really have a favorite group or singer, I like a little bit of everything; mostly pop: Black Eyed Peas, Shakira, Rihanna...I also listen to Argentinean music like Miranda.

Where did you live in Argentina? In a private neighborhood, with police controlling it, I lived in the capital, Buenos Aires. My house was also surrounded by a tall gate and we had an alarm system. All these measurements were in case they wanted to burgle our housE.

Which sports do you like most?.

HER LIFE IN SPAIN

Hockey and volleyball, which I played at school, and taikwondo, that as I said before I did out of school. I also enjoyed watching them on T.V. or live.

No because we often chat on the messenger and once a week more or less I call them.

Yes, in Argentina, my aunt once took me to watch the High School Musical concert. I have always wanted to go to a La Oreja de VanGogh concert, but I never could.

Do you maintain typical argentinean customs?

Here in Spain, do you go to concerts?

Yes for example, within my family and me we still kiss once instead of twice when we say hello, goodbye or congratulations.

At the moment no, because so far I don’t know where they play and what groups play but I hope I go to one soon.

Do you like cars?

Have you lost contact with the people you left in Argentina?

What do you do in your spare time? My family and I try to go out when possible yo get to know the city more, as there are several places we haven't seen yet: Igeldo and Aquarium. We also go to France, once we visited San Juan de Luz.

!

Have you ever been to a concert?

Yes, my favorite model is Audi A4.

And F1? Well, I don’t love it but, I’m quite interested in it, I enjoy the first minutes of each race, when all the cars start. And I would like to go to Montmelló now I’m in Spain. Laura Arrieta

Inte rview w i t h C é s ar G i m e n o ! César Gimeno, a 16 year old student, has a promising future. Son of a retired professional at judo, he has been inspired and motivated by him to train hard and who knows, maybe some day we will see him on TV. He attends classes at St-Patricks English School, getting good marks despite the lack of time he has. Last year he finished first in the Spanish championship between 50-60 kilograms. However, not only does he practice judo but also hockey, playing for Spain with players who are one year older. He spoke to Xanpa Times magazine about his childhood as a sportsman, his every day life and his aims for the future.

1-Early childhood (beginning of sports) What did you become interested in first, judo or hockey? How did you get started?

but I rapidly found it fun and useful for me whereas when I entered the hockey team I was really excited.

I got interest in judo first at the age of 4 but the truth is that my parents made me practice it first. As far as hockey is concerned, before playing it I practiced a lot of other sports like football and tennis. In fact, I have only been playing hockey for about 4 years.

Was it your parents who taught you and encouraged you to play those sports? Well, I must say that I started doing judo just because my father did it when he was young whereas in the case of the hockey it was my young sister who started ice skating and therefore, as a consequence I also wanted to learn how to ice-skate so I joined the hockey team

In the beginning, what did you find judo and hockey like? I actually found judo a little bit boring first because I was obliged to do it

!

We all know you have a younger sister. Have you had any effect on her as far as sports are concerned? Well, after I’d been doing judo for 3 or 4 years my younger sister also started but she got bored quickly, and after a year, she stopped. In the case of hockey I didn’t have any influence on her, since it's a very popular sport among girls and it was actually her who encouraged me to play.

Were you also a talented sportsman when you were little? No. As a matter of fact, in my first championship I finished 5TH out of 5 so no. However, I started getting better at judo at the age of 9 more or less (in the case of judo). As far as hockey is concerned, when I entered the team I was not really good but I learnt very quickly.

When did you first feel you were actually a gifted person and what caused you to think that? As I said, in judo it was at the age of 9 that I first started feeling I was really good at it, when I won a few important championships. However, I am not as good in hockey as I am in judo and I don’t consider myself a talented hockey player.

2-Every-day life Being as good as you are, you must be traveling back and forth every weekend. What effect does it have on your studies? Well, so far I've been getting quite good marks but sometimes it's true that I have difficulties to find time to study. My parents always tell me that I never study anything but...

How do you co-ordinate judo and hockey training? During the week I do judo everyday and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Fridays I go to hockey training. When it comes to championships, I sometimes have to chose between them, although judo usually comes first for me. However, I try to do both the same. However, there are some championships I must go to, like the Spanish one.

Do you have a special diet? Otherwise, how do you manage to stay healthy? Every week before a judo competition I have to follow a diet and I sometimes have to spend 2 days without eating to weigh the correct amount. It’s tough.

How do you feel about playing for Spain in hockey and having been a Spanish champion in judo? I feel very proud; I never thought I would get so far

!

We all know that your parents support you as much as they can, but how do they feel about you being so busy with sports? In hockey they don't really support me a lot whereas in judo all my family supports me, specially my grand-mother. In fact, I always call her after I finish. My father comes to most of my competitions to see me compete. However, in hockey they don’t often come to see me.

What has made you do two sports at the same time? Judo is a tough sport and sometimes not that much fun so I have always been looking for another sport to have more fun and that isn’t as serious as judo.

Please, describe yourself in just a few words and tell me if you have any secret that has helped you keep working hard despite how tough it can be. That’s a tough question. I will try my best. Description: I live for sports and I am very ambitious and Talking about my secrets, it's my ambition to be a good sportsman which has helped me keep working. In addition, I also have the luck that in my club there are a lot of "good judocas" and that creates a lot of competitivity which has encouraged me to become better.

3-Aims towards the future Have you ever thought about having to stop practising either of the sports?

Yes, one day I will be obliged to stop practising one of them and stick to the other one if I want to get good at one of them, but it will surely be a difficult decision.

How do you feel about your future as a professional sportsman? I think that if I one day become professional in a sport it will be in judo because hockey in Spain is not very well developed. However, Judo is also a sport in which it's really difficult to become a professional. I am looking forward to working hard and if everything turns out well becoming professional.

What are your hopes once you are older? I will definitely go to university because for the moment I want to study just in case, but in the extreme case that I become a professional in judo I would try to keep studying.

!

Having an injury can destroy your whole career as a sportsman. Will you consider that when making your decision?

Of course I will and because of that I will always keep studying so that in the case that such thing happened I would be able to find a good job.

What would you like to do that doesn’t involve sports?

Managing companies and those sorts of things, you know what I mean.

You are a great student. Do you think this will have an effect on the decision you make? I guess so. I still haven’t thought about that because it’s too early to be able to tell whether I am a good student or not.

CARLOTA SARASTI Everyone knows Carlota Sarasti, but nobody knows her hobbie, Badminton. She is a 15 years old girl, who studies in the San Patricks English School. The Sampa Times has had the oportunity to meet her a know more about her life, and something more about this sport that most of us don't know much.

THE START: 1) When did you start playing badminton? - When I was 9 years old, in 4th year of primary school. 2) Why did you start playing a sport that is not very popular with teenagers? - Because in my school it is normal to play, there are many teams. 3) Did your parents like, you playing badminton when you started? - Yes, but later no so much, because when I started with the competitions they had to pay for the hotel, and everything else, and the didn't like that.

!

4) At the beginning, was it like a school sport or more serious? - At the start it wasn't very serious, because there were many pupils signed up, but 2 years later was when we started to play as a good team, and it made more hard. 5) Do you train the same amount as when you started? - Not at all, now we train much more, and harder. TRAINING AND COMPETITION: 6) How long have you competed in the championships? And were have you been? - I started when I was 11 years old, two years later I had started playing. I have been to a lot of places but the ones I liked most were Menorca and Murcia, last year.

But in the Euskadi championship I won first place. 8) How much do you train a week? - It depends on the week, but normally 4 or 5 days a week and then the matches at the weekend. 9) You changed school 2 years ago. How did this affect to your training? - It changed a lot, now I train less, because I have less spare time, because I am a school, or I have home work. Some weeks I con only train 3 days. 10) Is it hard to combine the school work with the training and competitions? - Yes, because it takes a lot of time in the afternoon, and more now with the changes in school, and all that. 11) Are there any other teams in San Sebastian? Who you play against?

THE FUTURE: 12) Have you thought about playing badminton professionally? - No, first I have to finish school and university and then I will see if I want to continue or no. But I don ́t think so. 13) What are your plans for the future? Would you like to continue playing badminton? - No, I think that when I finish bacaulerate I will leave it, if not earlier. 14) At university. What would you like to study? - Probably, Medicine but I am not sure, because to get in I have to get a very high mark, but I really don't know. 15) Have you ever thought about playing the olympic games? - Yes, I would like to very much, representing Spain would be incredible. But I don't think I would ever do it.

- No there aren't any more, so that means we have to go to play against other teams from other cities, every weekend. Patricia Ascorreta

DENIS JUARISTI

Denis Juaristi, came to school some years ago he didn’t go unnoticed from the school. 2 years after, he agreed to give us an interview. You will find about his past, present and future plans, also hi will give us his opinion about actual important issues.

Q: Lets talk a bit about your time in this school, what was your favorite subject? A: Well, my favourite subject was physical education because I enjoyed it a lot and English is a very interesting subject. ! Q:And the subject you enjoyed least? A: I suppose Maths, I wasn!t very good at it. Although its not a bad subject if you understand it. Q: Tell me about teachers, who did you like most? A: I know is going to look a bit strange but Susie! Is the one I learnt most from. I remember enjoying her classes and I learnt a lot. ! Q: And who did you like least? A:Jaja, Enrique! I remember having some really bad times with him. Q: Well, tell me something really funny that has happened to you? A: Its not something funny that has happened to me, but something I did. I remember once at lunch time having a screwdriver in my hands and I didn!t have anything better to

!

than unscrewing the goal on the patio up stairs. It was really funny, but afterwards I got punished. Q: At the moment, what are you doing? A: I am finishing my bachiller studies in “Nazaret”, and studying English. Q: Denis, now be sincere comparing this school with the others you haven been is this school so bad? A: No! Not at all when you are in this school you feel it is the worst school. But the privileges you!ve got in this school are very difficult to find in other schools. And a very important thing is the level of English you can get. Q: If you think all of this, why did you want to go to another one? A: Because when I was here I felt like I was in prison very controlled. And my behaviour was not always good. Q: What privileges do you have in other schools? A: The timetable maybe. I think it!s a really good idea to have more free time.

Q: Work? What are you going to work as? Q: And what privileges do you find in this school? A: Clearly the level of English. And as it is a school not an institute the treatment you receive us more personal. Q: Well, after talking about school, lets talk a little but about you! You know the last edition I did a survey about teenagers and drugs. What do you think about teenagers taking drugs so early? A: I think it is a complicated thing to talk about. I believe everybody has the right to decide what they like. However, if they take drugs they should know their drawbacks.

Q: What do you think about drugs? A: I think there are many types of drugs. And that they affect us very different. And it can depend in the people who take them. But definitely there aren!t good drugs. Q: What are your future plans? A:My future plans are to finish well this last school term and go on holydays with my girlfriend in summer. And maybe work a little bit.

!

A: The previous two years I have worked as beach lifeguard in the hotel costa vasca. But this year I suppose I!ll work in something different. Q: You know people say you are very arrogant and a childish boy, what do you think about this? A: I think people that say that don!t know me. It!s true that I!ve behaved like that sometimes. But I think I!ve live my life the way I like. Q: Do you think you!ve done something to change? A: Not really. I!ve done good and bad things. And you learn from both. Q: And now tell me about the second love in your life, your scooter! A: My scooter? It!s fantastic, however now I also have a cas so I use it less. But lots of people would love to have a scooter like mine at 17! But when I!m elder I would like to buy a bigger motorbike.

were little? - I started when I was 12 but they were obviously quite bad, I no longer keep them. I have improved a lot and written a lot my rhymes are much, much better. But it is true that I am very bad in comparison to what you can see, I need to improve a lot to get lots more experience. !

time? - Yes, I love to do it. Now I write much more than before and try to do my best, ha-ha. It is one of my favourite things to do.

on? - Anything that goes round in my head at that moment. Dreams, problems, competition, thoughts…

9) Do you think being a rapper is

only about wearing baggy trousers and a baseball cap? No. You have to feel it deeply. Feel it “in your heart”. Many people nowadays think they are rappers because they wear clothes or just because they know how to rime a little bit. I think they should know a little more of the culture because rap is not a fashion, as some people think.

10) What do your friends think

about you being a rapper? - They do not care. They are fine. If I rhyme, they like it and they also encourage me to do it better and continue doing it, which makes me happy. 11) Do you record your songs and

put some instruments and music on them? - I did it twice a long time ago but it was terrible. Now i am trying to find somebody to help me do it. 12) Who are your favourite

rappers? - Violadores del Verso, Hablando en Plata, CPV, 7 notas 7 colores, VKR, Tote King, Juaninacka, Shotta, A3Bandas, Duo Kie, Dogma Crew, SFDK, El Límite, Yamal, S.Curro, Demasiado De, Alberto Gambino, Almargen, Arianna Puello, Arma Blanca, Artes, B.U.G. Mafia, Rapsusklei, Lechowski, Xhelazz, Black Bee, Hache, Primer Dan, Meko, Mitsuruggy, Supernafamacho, Mucho Mu, Duddi Wallace, Panzers, El Chojin, Triple xxx, Elhomega, Jefe de la M, El niño, Niko, Nikoh, Picos Pardos, Darmo, Tremendo Menda, Mala Rodríguez, Solo los Solo, Zpu, Nach, Charly , Ciniko, Chukky, Gone, Yoque, La Coka Nostra, Cres, Ciprés Hill, D12, Danie, Darmo, Dilated Peoples, Payo Malo, Jesuly, DMX, Xzibit, Dobleache, Dos hermanos, Dr.Dre. 13) Do you prefer English (USA) or

Spanish rap? - I listen to both but I listen to Spanish rap more because it is clearer to understand the lyrics. But both are great. 14) What are your dreams for your

life in rap? - I just want to continue writing and I want to record something, I do not want to become famous, and it would be very silly if I thought that. I just want to make my own rap for me. !

15) Would you like to form a group? - It would be very good. I do not mind rapping alone or with other people. Both would be interesting. 16) Would you like to be alone or

with more rappers in your group? - I do not mind. Maybe me and one or two Mc´s more and a DJ/producer. 17) What would be your alias in the

rap world? - I will have to think of a good one because it is an important decision since it is forever. 18) Would you like to participate in

the Batalla de Gallos or being only a singer? - Maybe I’d like to improve but for me making rap (I mean songs, demo tapes, mix tapes, discs) is much more important than battles. Battles are just a kind of game to play with. It is a game inside rap. The important thing is real rapping. 19) Do you see yourself as a rapper

in the future or just working as a normal person? - I will be rapper forever and I will have to work to earn living, so both things. Mikel Bravo

Interview with Pablo Rivero He says that he likes cycling, his favourite cyclists were Jan Ullrich and Mario Cipollini. It is logical, because they have to make a lot of e"ort, but I think that if UCI and cyclists helped each other it could disappear, but it’s di#cult. What do you think about the return to professional cycling of Lance Armstrong? It was an explosive piece of news. Interview wi! a fencer When did you started practising fencing? Why? I started doing fencing because a friend of mine and me, we wanted to try a new sport, and we thougth to try fencing, a sport that we didn’t know anything about. Nine years ago we started doing summer courses, that lasted two weeks, we repeat this during 4 continue summers, because we liked a lot, but later we thought about joining the whole year to improve more our technique, this is my fith year that I have been practising fencing the whole year. Before starting in this sport had you ever heard about it? Not much, at first we thought it would be like the films … but it is totally different, most people think that is sticking a spike in the opponents chest. Have you got any favourite fencing sportsmen? Yes, Jorge Pina and Igor Otaegui, they are both very good in fencing, but Igor has left the competitions, and now !

he spends his time teaching young people fencing, he is my fencing trainer. Had you done any sport before fencing? Yes, I have been practising a lot of sports before fencing. I practised football, handball, boleyball and baseball, I also practised horse riding. Now I left those sports, but sometimes I play them with my friends just for the fun of it. Was it difficult for you to learn the rules of this complicated sport? Well, when I started with fencing I couldn’t remember all the rules, but when you spend four hours a week practising and you are also a fencing referee it all becames much easier to remenber. Do you practise a lot before taking part in any competition? Yes, I practise a lot and very hard, but recently I am going through a lot of lesions, and I have competed with a very painful one in a championship.

What are your aims in fencing now? I have got a lot of aims in fencing, but the principal one is to reach the second position in the general ranking of my age. In the competitions how do you compete individually or in groups?Which one did you prefer? Actually, I compete in both, normally I compete first individually and then in groups, I prefer competing individually, because when I compete induvidually the score depends just in your effort and technique, and not in the group. What is your biggest problem in this sport? (Laugh)My problem is that I always complain, but is not a big problem, because in fencing you have to complain a bit, but without raising the voice to the referee, so that he will give you more points, everybody does it, if not you will not get much points.

Do you think fencing is developing with young people? Well, it is getting more and more popular, because in every championship the are more young people getting in and there is a more people every year who start practising this beautiful sport. Do you think Spain has a good fencing team for the Olimpics? Yes, we have got a very good team, but the are others better than Spain, for example USA, Hungary or France. That is because in these countries this sport is more develop, so Daniel Dong

Do you have any superstition before starting any competition?

Are you thinking of becoming a proffesional in this sport?

Well I don’t have any superstition, but I have the costume say good luck to the other team-mates.

No, I would like it, but can’t because I would have to leave my studies, or go to Madrid, there are schools where you can practise fencing at the same time you are studying. Will you leave this sport and try other sports? I don’t know, I have to try something else, but I am not good at football or basketball, both are sports I like a lot. But I am thinking of trying athletics.

Will you be practising fencing? Why? I hope so, because I have got a lot of friends in the club and because fencing help me realise tension and vent, but I hope when I go to the university, if I go, I could still practise it, not for the

ERIC POLVOROSA

Eric Polvorosa, a fourth eso student is a member of the indoor football team, which is reaping very good results and is giving definitely a good impression about the level of our school participants in different sports. Sampa Times has met him I order to know about this sport and about his experience in high level championships.

- Past: !

Q: Why did you decide to play indoor football instead of eleven-a-side football, as you used to in previous years? Did someone encourage you?

!

A: We decided to play football indoors because there weren’t enough players to make an eleven-a-side team and also because a class mate encouraged us. Q: Before starting this season, did you know anything about indoor football? Had you played it before? !

A: I hadn’t played it before but I had

watched it on T.V and also my father, who was a very good indoor player, talked a lot to me about this quite new sport.

!

Q: When you started playing this sport, did you think you were going to do so well in the San Sebastian Championship and even in the Basque Country Championship?

!

A: No, definitely not, we thought it was

going to be hard for us, the idea of adapting our way of playing football to this sport, but it was not.

!

Q: Was it difficult for you to learn all those difficult rules? !

A: Well, it was difficult, at first, but after

playing some matches it is getting easier to learn the indoor football rules, that are not even similar to the eleven-a-side football ones. ! Q: Do you think your team reacted positively to the new sport they were beginning to get involved in?

!

A: Yes, some better than others,

perhaps because they are used to playing on a bigger pitch or because the goals are smaller, but now we are all used to playing it. ! Q: What was your first impression when you saw for the first time your new coach?

!

A: Well, we firstly thought he was a shy

person but after a few hours of training we found out that he was a friendly and funny person, we now have a very good relationship with him. !

- Present:

- Future:

! Q: If you had to give a mark from 1 to 10 of the general level of your rivals, what mark would you choose? And why?

! Q: Do you think it will be possible for you to win the San Sebastian Championship? And the Basque Championship?

!

!

A: I would give them a 6, but there is a

A: I think we can win the San Sebastian

variety of levels, we can find teams like us or even better than us, because they have played this sport for more time than us, and we can also find teams that are worse than us, so, it is difficult to choose a mark…

Championship easily, on the other hand, I think it is difficult for us to win the Basque Championship because we are going to find very good teams, however we are going to do our best.

! Q: Have you been injured recently in indoor football?

! Q: What type of feeling do you think you are going to feel if you reach the final?

!

!

A: Not yet but I have received very hard

hits that hurt me a lot. ! Q: What has been you worst experience till now? and your best one?

!

A: Uf... the best experience... I will say it was when we defeated the team that was behind us (seconds) because we played very well and because we got some vital points. And the worst one, when we lost against Anoeta (one of the best teams) because they “stole” the match and because we nearly got involved in a fight !

Q: What has been your best match? A: Haha, I like this question, my best

match? The one we played against Erain because I scored two vital goals. ! Q: How many goals have you scored up to now? Are you proud of the number of goals you have scored?

A: I have only scored five, I want to score more but it is difficult because I am a defender, I think I am going to have more chances of scoring in future matches. ! Q: What do you think about the way the championship is organized?

!

A: Well, it is good, but I think they should take the organization of the referees and the licenses more seriously because we sometimes play against people older than us that should not play in this championship. !

A: I will feel motivated and very happy,

but I also think I am going to feel very nervous because of the pressure of being in the final round.

Q: Have you thought about continuing playing indoor football, next season? !

A: After talking about it for a lot of time we have decided to continue playing indoor football next season, although some members of the team didn’t agree. Q: What other teams do you think are capable of winning the championship?

!

A: Well if Anoeta continues playing so

dirty they may have chances of winning also Erain does although they play well ! Q: If you had to choose a rival to play against in the final round, which one would you choose?

!

A: In order to choose a team for the final I would choose Erain because they play very well and because their way of playing is not dirty, also I would like to defeat them in order to make them see we are better than them because they think they are the best team. ! Q: If you win the Championship what will you do to celebrate it?

!

A: We will probably have a special

dinner and we will go out all night long. Pablo Martínez Eguía

n i t r a M s u s e J r o f s n o i t s e u Some Q

Jesus Martin is one of the most popular playground assistants. However, not only does he look after us during playtime but also lives in the school since he is also St. Patrick’s guard. Among the students he is really well-known, not only for his jokes which help us to enjoy our time at school but also because of his down-to-earth personality. The Sanpa Times met him in order to get to know a little bit more about is past, his actual job and what he expects for his future.

- How did you get

- We know that you

love sports. Did you play for any team

I used to train an athletics team out of the school, but one day Rafa called me because he needed somebody to train an athletics team at school. - Since you came to school in 1997 many things have changed in St. Patrick’s. Which do you think are the most important? Apart from the “Txapela” which has made a great impact on the school, I think the most important one is with the people. In my opinion, it was much more like a family rather than just colleagues as it is now. - Be honest please, what was Jesus Martin like at school?

Well, I wasn’t one of the best in the class nor one of the worst. So let’s say I was just a normal student.

!

when you were younger? Yes I did. When I was 14 year old I played for an athletics team. The team was called “Gimnástica de Ulia” and I really enjoyed it, in fact, I left the team when I was 26. - How do you remember your school?

I can describe it in about three words. My school was little, it was strict and much more respect was needed during classes and out of them. - You know better than any other teacher does what students are like nowadays. Which do you think the differences are between the nowadays and the ones from your generation?

I specially think that they have much more freedom at school than I or we used to have. However, sometimes they have

too much freedom and therefore some things happen. - What does your job consist on? I am the school guard and I also take care of the maintenance of the surroundings. Apart from these, I also get paid o look after you when you are in playtime. - You have been living in

Well, I must say that I have known Chus for four or five years and I was really happy when he told me he was going to be the new sports manager, because Rafa and I recommended him for the post. With him, I think the school is getting younger. - When do you think you will have to leave the

the school since 2007. What was your first

school?

Well, if everything continues as it does nowadays I hope to leave the school when I retire. - If you leave the school,

impression when you moved into your new home?

I firstly thought that it was far too disorganised and in a really bad state. So the first thing I did was to solve these problems. - If you could change something about your job, what would it be? I’d definitely ask for more free time on Saturdays, as I can only have holiday on Sundays and a little part of the Saturdays. - We are sure that it is a little unusual to live in a school, so what do you think the main differences are between your present home and the past one? On one side I is better because there isn’t any noise at all and you have a lot of peace since nobody lives next to you. On the other hand, I sometimes miss not having neighbours because they can be really useful for many reasons in many different situations. - When you are on holiday, who takes care of the school?

The school has contracts with a security company which sends a guard to take care of the school while I’m enjoying my holidays. - What do you think about your new colleague and sports manager, Chus?

!

you might have to move into another home. Will you return to your old one or find another one? I honestly haven’t thought about it yet but I suppose that my parent’s present home will be a possibility because in the future it might become mine. - What would you like to do after your retirement? Travel. I hope I can travel on my own in order to see many different places and enjoy natue in peace. - Do you think you are going to be able to speak some English after your time at St. Patrick’s? Maybe just some few words, but nothing else. - To conclude we have a standard question. What would you do if you won the lottery?

I would retire if I had enough money to live retired for the rest of life. Oh! And I would also put the money needed so that you could have an artificial grass football field.

-Ignacio Iturrarte-

Interview with “Gaba” Gonzalo Gabarain, Gaba, is the indoor football trainer of the St th

Patrick’s Team of 4

of secondary

that comes from another school, Marianistas. Now he is studying in the university and at 5:30 to 7:30 he trains our team. We can say that he is a wonderful trainer and he has a great ability playing this sport, so we are very happy of having him as our trainer.

1-How did you notice and why did you decide to play indoor football? I found out about it because the brother of a friend plays. I decided to try indoor football because it is a sport I like and also because I want to earn some money.

2-How far do you want to go with this team? As far as I can, it’s a great team and when we play well nobody can beat us.

3-Do you prefer football or indoor football? Why? I prefer football because I have played it since I was very little and I had always dreamed of becoming a football player. Sincerely, I think it is the real football.

!

4-Which teams of the championship do you think are the best and we had to take into consideration? Looking back at who we have already played, the Anoeta team is a great opponent but the quality of the game isn’t as good as the results they get.

5-What is the thing you like most about being a football player? And as a trainer? As a player it is all the adrenaline I get off on it, it’s something that makes me happy and that is what I try to transmit on the field. As a trainer, it’s very different, you have to correct the things that your players do and encourage them to play better.

6-Are you going to continue training the football team the next year? I haven’t got anything planned yet for the next year but with university it will be very difficult.

7-Do you think you are a good sportsman? And which is the sport you like the most? Yes, I consider myself to be a good sportsman. I was born with a fantastic ability to play any kind of sport. The sport I like most is football but I like all the sports that use balls.

8-Do you think you are a worker or a lazy person? Why? There is no doubt: I’m a lazy person. Once I start something I need to do my best but it takes me a long time to start it.

9-What do you do in your free time? In my spare time sit down on the sofa, waste time on my computer, watch TV… times I go running or to the gym.

10-Which is the day you like the most? Why?

I’m doing a degree in business and I would like to work as a business man. But I don’t care if I have another job referring of what I’m studying.

14-How much time do you spend studying a day? In the university you have to study a lot but I don’t want to talk about how much I study…

15- Which is one of the things you feel proud of? I don’t know… but maybe my sports ability and my personality and also my romanticism.

Probably Friday, because the week end and the weekend begins. Friday nights are perfect hanging out with friends.

16- What are you able to do that

11-When you went to school what

Mmmm… I can throw a stone from one side of the Urumea River to the other and other things. Eric Polvorosa

kind of person were you? I wasn’t a good student but I got good marks.

12-How many leagues and championships did you win? Which sport? I won several football championships and leagues. Maybe, the most important championship was when I won the badminton Guipuzkoa championship. Also, we were second in the Spanish university football championship.

13-Which is the job you would like to have? !

other people aren’t?

Interview with Puri We all know Puri because of her work in the shop next to school, but we think that we know all about her just because she gives us a favorable deal and we seem to have known her for ages. However, after this session of diving deep into her life we discover that we don't know anything about her. Question: So, we know that you have been working in the shop for five years now, but we don't know where you started. So, can you tell us something about your work experience? Puri- Well, I started at a hairdresser's when I was eighteen years old and I left it when I became twenty-four years old. When I was thirty I went to San Juan de Dios and worked there as a nurse for twenty years and then I began to work in the shop Q: Then, this is the first shop you've worked in, is it? Puri- yes, this is the first one Q: However, you seem quite satisfied with the lifestyle you have now, so would you have minded if you had set up the shop anywhere else? P: It wouldn't be the same, but I think I wouldn't have minded if the shop had gone as well as it is going at the moment Q: Many of the people from the school buy here as it is so near to the school facilities, and the older students spend their time buying food and spending time in front of the shop. If it wasn't for all us, do you think the shop would have been so succesful? P: I have to admit that most of the people from the school buy things from here, and it wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for them. It would have been different, and not so much people would come Q: But also a lot of people have conversations with you. Do you find interesting what they say? P: Well, it is interesting to know the students well and hear what they say. If it wasn't for that, Work in here would be boring !

Q: and if some other people opened a shop next to yours, do you think the students would still buy in your shop or try the new one instead? P: I wouldn't mind if they looked in the other shop, but in the end the same people as always would still come here Q: Anyway, you’re pretty close to retiring. Do you think anyone will take over the shop when you leave? P: Well, I suppose the people in charge will get someone to work here when I leave, but at the moment I haven’t planned to get anyone to stay in the shop when I leave. Q: So, isn’t Mikel, your son, going to replace you in the business? P: No, he’s got his future and only helps me in his free time, but when I leave, I don’t think he’ll come back to work at the shop. Q: And, when the time comes, will you do anything in special when you retire? P: I don’t think so. I will just stay here and have the same life as always Q: Would you like to do something you thought about doing in the past? P: Well, when I was younger I worked some time for a theatre company. Maybe I would like to start some of it again, just for the experience. Iñigo Oñate

School uniform, is it really that bad?

We all wear school uniform because in St.Patrcik’s it’s obligatory and we always have thought of it as the worst thing teachers could do to us but, is it really that bad? Have we ever stopped to think about its good points? It is true that the school uniform isn’t the most beautiful clothes that we can wear, but St.Patrick’s uniform isn’t as ugly as other school uniforms. We also have to consider that our school isn’t very strict about the uniform, girls are allowed to wear grey or black pants and we can wear the shoes that we want, something that in other schools is unthinkable. And if we stop

and think for a minute we can also see that it is very comfortable to wear the uniform. Thanks to it we can sleep more because we don’t have to spend 30 minutes every morning thinking about which fashionable T-shirt to wear, we just go to the wardrobe and get the same clothes every day, which takes about 5 minutes. It is also comfortable because if it gets dirty we don’t really care about it, while as if somebody got our favorite jeans dirty we would kill him/her. However, it is not very nice that someone else tells you which clothes to wear, especially the teachers, and the fact that you can’t stand

out for wearing the most fashionable T-shirt in the world because everyone else wears the same T-shirt as you!! There’s no doubt that we all prefer to choose our own clothes and maybe the school uniform isn’t “our style” but we can consider ourselves privileged compared to other schools. In fact we should say thanks to the school uniform designer and to the teachers for not being very strict with that issue. So when you are all asleep at 8:00 a.m. and you would rather kill yourself than choosing your clothes remember to say: THANK YOU! Ines Gaviria

Most students of schools in England have to wear a tie and their teachers are really strict with the uniform! We can´t imagine how lucky we are...

Home Or Away? Everybody at this time of our lives is thinking what to study, or whether to study in our city or outside. Despite being something that seems quite easy to choose, not everyone can do it rapidly. Does studying away from home have more advantages than disadvantages? Is the information given in the school about other universities sufficient?

Studying away has lots of positive features. We can meet a lot more people this way because if you study in your city you may have as colleges already to you (this is easy to happen in a little city like San Sebastian) whereas in another city you’ll find completely new people to work with. However, there’s a thing in every pupil’s mind that no one mentions: no parents!!

However it isn’t all positive. The things that seem to be a good point can turn into negative. Staying away from home involves eating unhealthy artificial food (precooked pizzas, donuts, butterfly cookies, etc) that every student away from home gets fed of; since the food offered in the residences is not better (home-made food is missed). Is it healthy to eat rubbish food on a daily basis? There is no doubt that at first, the idea of having no parents on top of you is very attractive, but as we can see when we look at our big brothers or sisters, in the end not only fun is valuable, a healthy life at the time of studying is also very important. Be careful, it’s your choice!!! Written by Marcos Areizaga

Attention or

detention? Nowadays, us, students, tend to be talking all the time in class instead of listening to the teacher, as it is expected. But have you ever stopped to think if it is really worth acting as if you were at playtime in class? On the one hand, you’ll enjoy lessons and have great fun, you’ll be able to talk to all your friends about your personal things. For example imagine the scene: Monday 8:30, all you want is to go back to sleep and school seems like hell to you. Don’t pay attention, chat about all you did that weekend, what you’re going to do next…don’t you think class is not so bad after all? On the other hand, not paying attention means missing the teachers’ explanation and not understanding what’s going on. As a consequence you’ll have to work hard at home to make up and not fall behind. Not only that, your marks will be the same level as the floor, teachers won’t like you so much and your parents will get so cross that you will have to forget about going out on Saturday nights any more. To sum up, paying attention or not is up to you, but before doing something you can later regret, think twice and consider the pros and cons!

Computing causes disputing !ompu"rs have la"ly become very important for modern socie#es. $ey hav% become important & an ex"nt 'at some of us consider ourselves &ta(y dependabl% of 'em. However, have we ever s&pped & 'ink about 'eir advantages? Did yo) *now compu"rs can harm us? Is it actua(y be+er & do every'ing on 'e compu", -an by hand? Computers have loads of positive features. Just by clicking a mouse we can get information from the other side of the world or even see our house from a satellite! Furthermore, when writing pieces of work, once you get the technique of typing you will surely save tons of time. As well, in a long time period, money can even be saved by reading books on-line! However, they have their dark sides. We usually try to avoid them, but they are a fact. Computers in the long run will actually end up harming us in several ways. In the first place, radiation emitted by them can lead to cancer. Also, by writing everything on the computer we are getting worse and worse at orthography. Meanwhile, older generations look at us astonished and say” You make me feel

embarrassed by seeing how you write”. What about our eye-sight? It’s increasingly getting worse as time goes by. Maybe if you knew how much it harms your eye-sight you would stop using the computer! Moreover, it is commonly thought that computing saves you tons of time. Well, the truth is that this thought is totally incorrect. It might seem contradictory, but stop to think about how you spend your time on them. Now imagine you turned on the computer to write an essay: 20 minutes in “tuenti or facebook” plus 15 minutes in “comunio” looking at the players plus 20 minutes looking at videos in youtube plus 30 minutes writing the essay plus 30 minutes more looking at “tuenti = it sums up to a total of 1h 55 minutes! Of those nearly two hours, hardly a quarter of the time is used e!ciently. Now try to answer this question: Is it really worth turning on the computer to do some work or would you rather spend 45 minutes instead of 30 minutes writing the essay by hand?

.ere/s no doubt 'at compu"rs have changed our socie0 and 'at 'ey have probably le1 & a new age. If 'ey are used e2ciently 'ey can be bene3cial. Violent Video-games A lot of American studies say that playing violent video-games like Resident Evil, Doom or Grand Theft Auto can increase the aggressive thoughts of a person. However, do we ever stop to think about the good and bad thinks of playing video-games? Do we ever ask ourself about the time we spend playing games in front of our television? Is all this wasting time or is it a very enjoyable experience? Can a video-game affect us as much as real life? Playing video-games has lots of positive features. However, most of the best video-games contain violence. Really cinematographic games like Metal Gear Solid 4 or Call of Duty 4 are based on reality, raw reality. These video-games are really an impressive experience, they are like a film but sometimes with imaginative ideas, as we see in Killzone 2. When you finish one game of this you really feel proud because when you started it was like an unbelievable challenge.

But playing video-games and violent video-games also has its dark side. Some people don't distinguish between a computer or play-station game and the reality. For example, a few months ago one child was killed in Spain because he interrupted his father when he was playing GTA IV. The father, who was killed in the game, was so furious that he killed his son. When he realised what he was doing, the child was lying dead in the middle of the room. There is no doubt that playing video-games is a very interesting and enjoyable way of having a great time but you have to separate the two worlds, the real one and the world of the videogame. If not, it you don't have total control of your mind maybe you should not play videogames, in order to prevent accidents. Jon Ander Mendizabal Dominguez

Are guns really going to entertain us?

Nowadays, the film industry tend to consider violence in films attractive, and most people do not stop to think whether in the film nowadays industry action is overvalued. However, many more people than before are being affected by these negative influences (as it has been shown in Germany some time ago) and none of us asks himself if it is recommendable to stay that way. Is it worthwhile sacrificing children’s’ minds just for the money and the sake of being able to produce a film everyone likes? Or is it better to live in boredom but being able to live in a peaceful world where there is no sight of guns, fights and all the rest?

The action genre is one of the most rentable film genres, and more than the half of the American film industry dedicate all of their money and time to develop not only violent films, but also violent series which end up in the public television. These programmes are able to generate millions of dollars, and appeal to most of the public as they show us the side of life that is too risky for us to take. However, this means that children are also attracted by this material, and it isn’t really convenient that they see these kinds of images, because they may end up starting massacres at schools like some that have been committed in the recent past. Reality, is that children

are not controlled when it comes to what they watch. Most cinemas don’t even care about the age group of the people who buy the tickets are in, and that often allows boys who are only 10 years old watch films that aren’t really appropriate for them. But it is not only about bullets: A whole new film genre has evolved from all this. In the last 10 years, the amount of terror films has been multiplied, producing box office hits such as Saw, Hostel and Quarantine. As mentioned, the more violence there is in a film, the more people that want to see it, although the film content might be rated for people over 18. Now, think hard over this. Do we really want children to grow up mad and killing each other, or do we just want them to grow up safe and happy, even though it may, without anything to watch except the unappealing television soap operas ? Iñigo Oñate

Spanish TV series We all watch TV series for different reasons and nearly everyone has contact with TV nearly every day. However, do we ever stop to think about its good and bad points? Do we ever think about how much time we spend in front of television? Is all this positive or it another way of wasting time. This series has lots of positive features. We can use a series to disconnect from

problems that you could have, or you can watch them only for fun, as almost all the people do. Nowadays American series spend a lot of money, and Spanish series without spending all that money, are seen all over the world. However it isn’t all positive. The series have a disadvantage, because they haven’t got as much money as American series can spend on special effects. Moreover the theme they cover is every single year the

same and therefore they often end up being boring. There’s no doubt that Spanish series is miles away from American TV series. However considering how little budget they are allowed to spend on them, it’s quality is quite good. So next time you watch TV stop picking on it and just enjoy Spanish humour. Trust me, it’s amusing, you won’t regret doing so! Daniel Goiria

Not a

pleasure for everyone We all know what pornography and erotic films are and we are conscious of how this genre is seen in our society. However, is everything involved in pornography negative? Or is it a good idea to let TV channels emit pornographic material? Are we really sure about our opinion of this subject? Everything related to pornography is not completely negative. It’s true that a lot of people don’t like it because they find inappropriate, but we can’t forget that this industry makes a lot of money and, whether we like it or not, this is because of the large number of people who pay to watch it. In fact, the vast majority of people who say they don’t have any pornographic material, do have some! People in the world of pornography and erotism agree that that is the worst thing for their business: people who don’t admit they watch porn.

However, anyone can clearly see a large number of negative features that can be associated with this genre. Inappropriate or disgusting, for example, are just t wo of the large amount of adjectives used by almost everybody to refer to it’s dark side. Furthermore, it may not be the best thing that a 6 year-old kid could watch on his TV or he can see on any of the millions of entries that Google offers you. It might be good; it might be bad; who knows? What is true is that this business may need a lot of time in order to be seen just as another genre more, and that we are receiving a lot of information about it and even explicit material more frequently and at a younger age.

“Not such a stupid box!” The T.V, commonly known as the “Stupid Box” captivates statistically, 30% of our day. Is it a waste of time? Or in the other hand…. a good way of having fun and relaxing? We are trying to find the answers to these questions; because we really spend a lot of time watching T.V its worth thinking about the positive and the bad aspects to find whether we should change our T.V viewing habits. The T.V has quite a lot of positive features. We can be informed about relevant information about life today, such as: weather conditions, wars, job offers, economic advise and in the other hand we can have fun with many of the series, films or sporting events, that are displayed currently. However we can also find negative aspects in watching T.V. For example; a lot of the programs and advertisements that are shown are only produced to make money without caring about the quality and significance of the information that they are based on, they can definitely change peoples way of thinking and even the way they are and make them buy their products

without control. Nowadays the quality of the stuff shown on T.V is generally poor, because; gossip programs have taken the control of the main channels, laying aside other really original and high quality which don’t produce the same amount of money. In conclusion, the T.V can help us to take life more easily, it can be a way of disconnecting from real life, but it can also be a “weapon” used by the big business to sell their products and to produce money at the expense of those who don’t understand the dark-side of the “Stupid Box”. We can that the T.V is infected with an amount of nonsense and irrelevant, programs series and even films, whose objective is to catch our attention in order to make money. You have the remote control, you have the power, choose with care. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Pablo Martínez Eguía

Too young or old enough? Nowadays, the majority of us have a computer and if not nearly the majority of us have contact with the computers however that is not all nowadays children have computers at a younger age. However do we ever think about its positive and negative features? Do we ever ask ourselves if computers are good for young people? Do we ever ask what can our children do with those machines? Computers have many positive points. Young people can use them for many things, from school work to personal things,

like finding out results of football matches or whatever they want. However it isn’t all positive. Nowadays

children have computers at a younger age. That means that they will look for things at a younger age and we all know that with computers we can do really bad things. Young people begin

playing computers games and if they play aggressive games too much they may become aggressive or simply they can look for things that they shouldn’t look for. We should all know that having computers at a very young age can be dangerous due to the information we can get from them, or simply the problems we can have if we use these machines badly. So next time you buy a computer for your son make sure that they knows the danger of the computers. Bruno Santiago

!"#$%"&'($)!*+,(-!(%%.)&%%/ We all have at least once downloaded music illegally and a great number of us download music illegally nearly every week. However, have you ever thought the real effect downloading music illegally has on the artists? Is downloading music illegally a good thing or is it just a bad thing that leads to singers and groups losing a lot of money? Downloading music illegally has got a great deal of good features, at least for the downloaders. The first and main point is that downloading music illegally is free, and you don’t have to pay the more or less 10 ! they ask for a CD in a shop. Secondly, you can download a lot of music and then select the best ones to put them on your MP-3 player. On the other hand if you have to buy songs on iTunes, you will not discover new songs. So, in a way, downloading music is a way to discover unknown artist and new music you would never listen to otherwise. However, downloading music illegally isn’t a bed of roses: Artists lose immense quantities of money. In addition, there are great opportunities that you download a virus that will erase your entire database and will certainly damage your

PC. Furthermore, for instance you want to download Akon’s Dangerous and it downloads another song which has nothing to do with the song you were initially looking for. To sum up, downloading music illegally is good for downloaders and bad for some singers because they lose money. However I’ve been thinking to the real impact of downloading music, and I’ve come to a conclusion: It is true that artists lose a lot of money. On the other hand some artists are known because of downloading. Finally even if artists lose money they still earn millions of dollars by advertising or by concerts.. But if downloading music wouldn’t exist; many singers would still be unknown and wouldn’t be so rich. In a way downloading music is good, but always with moderation! Eric Laqueche

To have or to have not? N

owadays tuenti or facebook are very famous websites which almost every teenager has contact with. However, do we ever stop to think about their good and bad points? Do we ever ask ourselves where or in what hands our photos or personal information can end up? Is it good to have photos that can be seen by anyone? Tuenti and facebook have lots of positive features. We can use these websites to get in touch with people all over the world. We can use these to have access to photos when ever you want or where ever you are. The only thing needed is the internet. However, it isn’t all positive. Facebook and tuenti also have a dark side. People all over the world who don’t know you can see your photos, read your comments to other people or even find out your personal information. Is it healthy that the whole world read about all your personal information? There are also

lots of people that pretend they are somebody else. This is a real problem; people pretend to be famous people. There’s no doubt that facebook and tuenti are good if you use them consciously. So next time you connect to a website like tuenti or facebook remember people all over the world can get your photos or personal information.

TEENAGERS HAVING MOTORBIKES OR MOTORDEATHS? Some teenagers have motorbikes for different reasons everyday. However, do we ever stop to think about its positive and negative points?Does it have more positive points or negative points? Having a motorbike has lots of positive features. We can travel through the city comfortably and very fast. You can pass through the traffic to jump the queue and to avoid the traffic jams, just because it is a small form of transport. Another positive feature is that you do not have to depend on the buses or trains. It also make you more independent and your parents are freer just because they do not have to take you to school, or the cinema... However it is not all positive. Having motorbikes also has a dark side. You spend lots of money on fuel for the motorbike and all your pocket money runs out easily. When it rains you get wet just because it does not have a roof and you get ill very easily. Another dark side is that you can have an accident easily and you can hurt yourself. So we can see that there are lots of positive features and negatives but we must ride in our motorbikes carefully and not going very fast.

!Fair" or !Foul" play? We all have played different kinds of games in our lives. But do we always use the rules to win? What’s better, using them or breaking them to win? Do professionals play with the rules to win? Or do they break them? Playing within the rules makes the game more equal and to beat the opponent you have to use your abilities, and the result will be fair. Usually the looser will accept loosing if the result is fair. However, some people think that the most important thing in all games is victory. So it’s not important whether they win fairly or dirtily, the only thing which is important is winning. This is sometimes demonstrated in some sports like football. Some players commit fouls and the referee does not catch them, or they pretend that things have happened to confuse the referee, all this although it’s illegal is done for the benefit of the team. There’s no doubt that games are played for fun. Victory is not always the most important thing. So next time you play any game remember to play for fun and not to win, and try to win fairly. BULLS OR BULLYING The spectacle of the bulls is something traditional in Spain and of which we all have an opinion that can be positive or negative. The art of teasing bulls is a tradition that comes from the past. Perhaps this is the reason why it survives, but have we ever stopped to think about the positive and negative aspects that it has for society? Have we ever questioned ourselves if it is ethical to kill an animal for fun? There are some positive aspects we have to have in mind. There’s no doubt that for the groups which are related to this world it contributes lots of things. On one side, the public that goes to the bullring have fun and think that is an enjoyable act. They appreciate the courage of the bull- fighter because he risks his life. On the other hand there is the economic aspect. There is lots of money to be made. However, there are lot of people who are against bullfighting. They think that killing a living being for fun is a brutal act of cruelty. It’s a mistreatment that can’t be tolerated. First the bull has to suffer a series of tortures and finally ends up dead. It seems like a primitive act from ancient times. There is no doubt that bull fights is a tradition that has been in Spain for generations and that lots of people enjoy it as well. But perhaps we should stop to think that having fun is not the most important thing. Especially when there is an animal suffering and dying. So next time you participate or see one of these spectacles remember that a living being is dying just so you can have fun! By PABLO SANTOS

Positive things of having brothers and sisters The majority of the people do have brothers or sisters. But do we know what life would be like if each family had only one kid? Or how what life would be like for those who do not have any brothers or sisters? Is it better having them or not? Having brothers or sisters, has lots of positive things. For example, you have someone to share things with, play with and have fun. If you go on holidays you have someone to talk to or understand if you have problems. They can also give us advice if we are worried about something, or help us if we don’t understand homework. You always know you are not alone. However for some people this isn’t all positive. If you are the oldest son and you have younger brothers, they are always following you, telling you things when you have to study and you want to be alone. Also little kids always win, if there has been an argument the oldest brothers are punished, always giving the little ones what they want. But there is no doubt that most people want to have them. Although we have fights with them, sometimes we don’t notice this unless we are alone with brothers, we have someone to talk to or that is fun and help us enjoy our family to be closer together. So next time you have a fight with your brothers or sisters, think about how lonely you would feel without them. Sofia Tiano
