The Theft Written by Megan Yap It was the day before the PSLE listening comprehension examination. Victor and Charles hatched a plan to steal the examination answer sheet from Mrs Kingston, who also happened to be the one who set that year’s paper. Just before recess, Mrs Kingston let the students go five minutes earlier to give them an early break. Recess is a break that all students look forward to everyday. To get to Mrs Kingston’s bag, Victor and Charles lied to the prefects guarding the staircase by telling them that their teacher had asked them to go up once they finished their recess. They tried their best to look sincere and relaxed. Their trick worked and they fooled the prefects. They then rushed up the stairs as quickly as they could to reach the sixth level. There, they saw the “treasure”, Mrs Kingston’s bag was in the classroom, unattended. This answer sheet would be their chance to get good grades to enter the school of their dreams, they thought. Before they entered the room, Charles told Victor to stay near the door and keep watch. Without wasting a second, Charles searched through the bag and quickly found what he wanted. Just then, Victor heard footsteps along the corridor. He peeped out and saw Mrs Kingston walking towards the classroom. Victor whispered anxiously to Charles that Mrs Kingston was coming but Charles was too busy looking at the other examination papers to hear him. Suddenly the door swung open, and immediately she realised what had just happened. An angry frown creased her forehead. “What are the two of you doing?” Her voice crackled with anger. Terror seized the two boys. They stood rooted to the ground. In their minds they wanted to ask Mrs Kingston for forgiveness but the shock of being caught red-handed robbed them of speech. Moments later, Mr Lim, the discipline master was paged. He came to the classroom and listened attentively as Mrs Kingston explained what she saw. “You boys have made a very serious mistake. “Mr Lim said calmly. “You may have to be caned. Let me discuss this with the principal.

After more than half an hour standing inside the principal’s office, it was decided that caning would be meted out as punishment. Victor and Charles’ parents were informed of this decision. Both boys sweated profusely while they waited for their parents to come to the school. They thought to themselves that their dream of enrolling in the school of their choice was shattered. After the caning, the boys went to the counselor’s office for a meeting with the counselor and the boys’ parents. To help them, the principal appealed to the Ministry of Education not to expel the students. They were warned that they would face even more sever punishment if they repeated their mischief. Both Victor and Charles solemnly promised that they will never try to cheat in their examinations again.
