33,135 LAST MEETING: 10-14-09 By: John Chamberlin

Once up on a time on a dark and scary night… That has nothing to do with this week’s Rotary Meeting but I have always wanted to write a line like that! We had a good meeting, good food and good camaraderie this week. We were called to order, had an invocation by Guy Tumolo and then were led in the pledge by Alan McIvor as well as spotted off a version of “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” thanks to the piano accompaniment of Jim Hall.

Rotary is a leader in making Pittsburgh a place where every young person has an opportunity to succeed.

President Aaron Moody thanked Linda Fischer for presiding over the Club Assembly last week. There were many positive comments about the “get to know ya” event. Seems that lots of Rotarians enjoyed getting to know the newer members and vice-versa. NOTE: Next week’s meeting will be in the Sternwheeler Room. The hotel apologizes but there are no other rooms available that day. Secretary Ben Luffey provided everyone with an update on events that were going on in the rest of the District. He also welcomed the guests of members and a couple of visiting Rotarians from Wheeling and the Detroit area.

Club member Bill Wolfe had arranged for our speaker for the day. Unfortunately he was unable to attend the meeting therefore President Aaron introduced our speakers. Barb Grandinetti and Mary Drelizsak of “The Challenge Program” spoke to us about their organization’s activities in local high schools.

Barb Grandinetti is the Executive Director of The Challenge Program. The program was started in Johnstown. It’s mission: Motivate students to perform well in high school by providing financial incentives for successes they achieve while in school and to build a bridge between education and the business community. The program reaches out to sophomores, juniors and seniors. The program provides incentives in four categories per grade: Academic Excellence, Academic Improvement,

John Chamberlin of All-Pak then relayed why the All-Pak owners have been involved with The Challenge Program. All-Pak has a strong tradition of being involved in community efforts. Their support of The Challenge Program is in line with what the company goals are for community service as well as with Rotary’s ideals of building future leaders. If you would like more information on The Challenge Program and how your company can get involved with the area schools, go to www.tcpinc.com. The meeting was adjourned at 1:30pm. Please be thinking of the Chuck Tanner event this week! Minnesota Twins Manager, Ron Gardenhire, is this year’s award recipient.
