the teacher and school to form a partnership to best support their child’s learning. School re ports on the standards It is intended that school reports on the standards will provide parent, family and whānau members with: ♦ information on how their child is doing against each standard each year, and how their child has progressed to get to that point ♦ the next steps the teacher and school will take to ensure their child is reaching their full potential, and how the teacher and school will address any learning difficulties ♦ the steps that parents and whānau can take to support their child’s learning at home. How school re ports will empowe r parents Plain-language school reports on national standards will provide information that empowers parents and enables them to: ♦ be aware of how their child is performing at school and what is being done to meet their needs ♦ track the increasing skill levels of their children ♦ identify the things that they can do to support their child’s learning ♦ talk with confidence to teachers about their child’s education ♦ be reassured that any learning difficulties are being addresse d. Sample re ports for consultation with parents Consultations with parents, families and whānau asking their views on how they would like the school reports on the standards to look are taking place across the country from 18 May to 3 July 2009. A key part of the consultation is asking parents their thoughts on school report samples, which include graphs, a learning plan, summaries of progress and next steps. These samples can be viewed as part of the parent feedback online form at http://www.minedu.govt.nz/ NationalStandardsParentFeedback. Feedback is due by 3 July 2009.
A rare opportunity On 2nd June children will have an opportunity to hear Geoff Knight’s story. Geoff's story captivates school students and gives them an insight into the choices they are making right now. Geoff has enormous influence with school children that stems from his rough start in life, roles on television and his unmistakable talent for singing that delights students and teachers alike. Geoff tells his story from the heart, and this means school students hear Geoff's messages, which include: ♦ Make the most of your opportunities at school ♦ With bullying, everyone loses ♦ Have the courage to live your dream. Geoff will share his story and singing in Trinity Hall on T uesday 2nd June 12:45 – 1:25 pm. Entry will be by way of a gold coin donation. THE ZERO WASTE CHALLENGE FOR NELSON AND TASMAN SCHOOLS Here is the ball of gladwrap we collected this week (on the lef t !). Well done for taking on the challenge, everyone did really well in helping to reduce the amount of plastic we use in our packed lunches. We will be sending the result of our challenge to Sarah Langi who is running a competition with Nelson and Tasman Council. They are trying to find out how schools in our area are trying to reduce waste in their school. oom 9 have been learning to retell sto ries in their writing. We leaned about several Maori legends R and focused on retelling them in detail and in the correc t sequence. Here are some of Room 9's retellings. Maui slows the Sun Maui wanted to go fishing but the sun went accross the sky too fast. He couldn't go fishing. Maui's bro thers made a net. They caught the sun. The sun said "Let me go!". Maui started to wack the sun with the jaw bone. The sun said "ouchy". The sun promised tha t he would go slowly in the sky. Now Maui got to go fishing for longer.
By Jazmine Maui slows the Sun Once upon a time Maui lived with his bro thers. Maui said to his bro thers "Let's go fishing!" but it w as too dark. So Maui said to his bro thers "make ropes and a net". Maui and his bro thers went to the hole that the sun came out of. At the hole, they stretc hed the net over. When the sun came up they caught it and got caught in the net and the ropes. Maui climbed the ropes and hit the sun with the magic jaw bone. "Why are you doing this to me?" the sun cried. "Because you are moving too fast" Maui said. Finally the sun said that he would slow down.
By George B M aui slowing the sun by Aria and Jessie Tangaroa's Gift Paua was sad because no creatures liked him. They didn't like him because he was ugly. Paua was jealous of all the other crea tures. Paua cried and cried. Tangaroa heard him and asked "why are you crying?". Paua said "nobody likes me because my shell is ugly". Tangaroa said he would put lo ts of colours on his shell. So he did. Af ter that everyone was jealous because it was so nice and beautiful. They broke his shell. Tangaroa was angry. He put a stronger coat on Paua's shell so the other crea tures wouldn't break it and put the beau tiful colours on the inside so only Paua knows tha t he's actually pretty. By Eden
