Th e Book of Prov erbs is the most represe nta tive wor k of Israelite wisdom liter ature, cf. Introd uction to Wisdom Books. T he body of the book is made up of two co llect ions: 10-22: 16, ca lled ' T he proverbs of Solomon' (375 ap ho risms) a nd ch. 25-29, introduced by 'The followi ng a lso are pro verbs of So lomon, tra nscribed by the men of Heze kiah' (128 ap ho risms) . Appendices have been ad ded to each of these two co llections : to the first, 'sayings of the sages' (22: 17- 24:22) and 'The following a lso are taken from the sages' (24 :23-34); to th e second, 'the sayi ng s of Agur' (30 :1-14), fo llowed by numerical proverbs (30:15-33) and 'the sayi ngs of Lem uel' (31: 1-9). The who le is preceded by a long introd uction, ch , 1-9, in which a fat her co mme nds wisdom to his son a nd in which Wisdo m herse lf in tervenes. The book closes with an alphabetical poem in pra ise of t he idea l wife, 31: 10-31. The order in which the cen tra l sect ions are arra nged is of littl e importance: it differs in the Greek Bible, and the max ims inside the various sect ions are j uxtaposed with out co ncern for log ical seq uence . T he book is therefore a collection of collections, with in the fra mewo rk o f a prologue and ep ilogue. It reflects a hint of liter ary develop ment, ou tlined in the general Introd uction to the W isdom Books. The two ma in collectio ns sho w th e mashal in its most prim itive form and consist excl usively o f brief ap ho risms, usually of a single couplet. In the append ices, however, the fo rm is more ela borate ; the short numerical poems of 30: 15-33 , cf. 6:16-19 , ad d the charm of a riddling manner to their edifying matter, a device already practi sed in ea rlier times, cf. A m I. T he pr ologue, ch. 1-9, co nsists of a lon g discourse interrupted by tw o exho rtation s fro m W isdom per sonified ; th e epi logue, 3 1:10-31, is a ' learned' co mpo sition. T his evo lution of form co rr espond s to successive peri ods of litera ry act ivity. T he ea rliest sections a re the two great co llections, ch. 10-22 and 25-29 . T hese are att ribut ed to So lomon who , accor ding to I K 5: 12, was the a utho r of ' three thousand prover bs' a nd wh o was always co ns ide red to have been the grea test sage of Israel. The impersonal accent o f the proverbs make s it imp ossible for us to assign any particular ma xim to the kin g, but there is no reaso n to doubt that this co llection as a whole dates from his tim e: the maxims of th e second collection were already anci ent when ' t he men o f Hezeki ah ' co llected them , in about 700 B.C. T hese two collection s form th e co re o f the book and give it its full name, ' the pr overb s of Solomon' , 1:1. T he sub-titles of th e sma ller sections however show tha t thi s titl e is not to be tak en too lite rally , embracing, as it doe s, the aphorisms of a no nymo us sages, 22 : 17- 24:34, a nd the say ings of Agu r and Lemuel, 30: J - 3 1:9. Even if the nam es of these two A rabian sages

Befo re the mountains were settled, before the hills, I came to birth ; before he made the earth, th e co untryside, or the first grains of the world's dust. When he fixed the heavens firm, I was there, when he drew a ring on th e surface of the deep, when he thickened the clouds above, when he fixed fast the spr ings of the deep , when he assig ned th e sea its bo undaries - and the wa ters will not invade the shorewhen he laid do wn the found at io ns of the earth.
