Exercise : 1. Connect the 9 dots using 4 lines and without lifting your pen Reflections : go outside the box, go beyond the limits, the figure look like a kite which symbolizing visions, dreams for community development.

10 dots, rearrange in such a way you have five lines with 4 dots.

Reflections: Given the 10 dots, manage your resources. For me, the star is the goal to reach and the kite is the tool to reach. The kite is about visioning, each community should have a vision. Each vision needs holding, interconnectedness. But the vision remains a vision without action. The 2nd exercise is of an action. This shows the rearrangement, management, of controlling. Be able to respond within The community without bringing in outside help.

STRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT SECTORAL STRATEGIES

ENVIRONMENT AND RISK REDUCTION

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

SPIRITUAL LIFE

GENDER & DEVELOPMENT

SOCIAL PROTECTION

1. Economic development program is part of Social Development. Economic development is not evil. There is no wrong about having a higher income. Money is not evil, but the love of money. How does Economic Development promote social development? When the people are living in better economy, they are able to have services for the community. Money is needed to provide services. e.g. more infrastructure for health services, this may lead to more employment which leads to the employees having families with income who are able to send their children to school. Then the school generate income in the form of tuition, uniforms, transports. USSR crumbled because they don’t have money. In a socialist communist country, people just do the quota, there is no economic progress, as they only do what is the norm. they suffered. And therefore they revolted. There was a change in the social system. Imagine, if the bread winner dies, the family suffers 2. Social Protection Programs – e.g. insurances, immunization, these are done because we are vulnerable to disasters, or sicknesses. There is less worrying, people become more productive. Part of social development is the mental health. If we don’t have protection, it can bring us to poverty. There are some people who cannot cope up with the economic development – the poor, the marginalized, the seniors, the people with disability. If there are not sufficient services, or laws to protect them, they won’t be able to cope up with the economic development. 3. Gender and Development Program – Equal opportunities in employment, addressing abuse like rape, taken advantaged of. Sexual harassment acts is a form of gender program. Visibility –to celebrate women’s achievements.

Five groups that are discriminated/ or in the vulnerable sectors – women, children, disabled, the elderly, the poor. Men are vulnerable to stress, drinking is their way of release, or they bully. There are also some concerns on how parents have sexual stereotyping, like girls treated as ‘Maria Clara’ and not able to protect themselves, or boys treated roughly like boxers become bullies. There are too much expectation from men which are not necessarily within every man. 4. Environmental and Risk Reduction Programs – whenever there are disasters, such programs help people to cope up, and resources are available to help those affected. Pre-disaster recovery plan – a way to project how to recover and help those affected. Environmentallygarbage collection, pollution control, conserving natural resources. 5.

Structural Development-

A structure is 3D – The structure can be programs and systems. There can be loop holes in the structure, oppressive leadership, There are power relations within a structure. When those in power misuse their authority, there will be suffering. Therefore, there should be structural change.

GROUP 1 – Josie, Ana and Reynold- THE STORY OF THE THREE FROGS

Three frogs in a deep hole. They were always quarreling – how big is the sky? Someone would say that the sky is as wide as the mouth of the well. One said it is bigger than the mouth of the well as he jumped he saw it is bigger than the well and he saw something different. At a different time, the next frog jumped and saw something different as well and agreed that there is something bigger than the well. The third one leaped at sunset and saw also something different. Now they are not quarreling about the size of the mouth of the well, but what they saw. And they kept quarreling because they have different perspectives. When we look it in our life situation – each one has a different perspective because of their positions in life, social status. What is this strategy for community development – creating a common perspective, awareness, by dialoguing, by team works. We cannot have community development if we argue each other. We should have common perspective or at least tolerance for each other.

GROUP 2 : Exercise by groups (with Sarah and Anja) THE STORY OF THE ANTS

Picture 1 – ants looking at the grapes up above with hand releasing the fruit. They cannot reach it. Picture 2 – ants huddle together and helped each other to climb and get the resources. Picture 3 – they were able get the resources for them by getting the rest of the ants to help them get the resources. Lesson learned – it takes a community to have the resources distributed to many. Many benefited and not just the first five ants. We see unity, team work to do this. They were selfless and helpful. The resources can be food, medicine, health care, they cannot reach the resources, however they cannot access it. The government usually have resources given to a community if they have an organization. They need to have a structure in order to distribute it in the community. The strategy is the organization. GROUP 3 – Aris and Joel, THE STORY OF THE FISHERMAN

Picture 1- one fisherman giving one fish to another person Picture 2 –fisherman gave one fish to the boy again, the boy ate one Picture 3- fisherman gave 2 fish to the boy, Picture 4 – fisherman brought the boy with him to fish Picture 5- fisherman and the boy equally brought home a basket of fish each. Lesson – each one has gifting, we should help them to fish not just give fish. This is about capacity building development. we develop the capacity of everyone in order to be productive. GROUP 4 – JC, Keiye and Pao The Children’s Swing

Pic 1- a swing – plank suspended by 2 ropes on a tree Pic 2 – a swing – plank with backing

Pic 3 – a swing – pretty swing with cushion and carpet Pic 4 – a double decker swing Pic 5 – what happened – trunk of the tree cut supported by 2 sticks and swing still hanging on the tree, stump covered with carpet. Pic 6- what the kids want – a swing made of tire only. Strategy- participatory development – include all the stakeholders, in this case, the children are the users of the resources. In this case, the kids are the marginalized. The simplest story comes from the users. GROUP 5- Ed and Jun

Pic 1 – in a sea, there are fish living on their own. Pic 2- then there is a shark that came, there now is a threat. They ignore the threat. Pic 3- the shark turned around and disturbed the school of fish. Pic 4 small school of fish grouped themselves and tried to organize. Pic 5 – the school of fish they formed themselves to be a bigger fish to fight the threat. Lesson here – the community moved together to fight the big threats. The threat can be like capitalists who kill the small businesses. Big developers displacing the small community. Strategy – conflict confrontation. There is an oppressor and the oppressed. Example is David and Goliath. This shows there is a powerful one exploiting the weak. We have to resist the devil, we should wrestle what is evil. When we see something wrong, we should confront it. When we see from day to day, we should correct them. GROUP 6 – The Boat is sinking Pic 1 – 2 persons on a boat asking for help to God– one looks like a pastor and they are in a wavy sea Pic 2 – there is one on shore saw the situation and just pray for God to help Pic 3 – there is a person on a plane who can see what is happening below and thanking God for what he sees. Pic 4- There is a guy above the mountain and thanking God for the beautiful waves but didn’t see the 2 people in danger. Pic 5 – another person on the other side of the mountain, does not see the waves at all. Pic 6, the whole picture.

Lesson learned: The one who saw the situation, should be able to go to those who have the power to help, to engage those above, who have the capability to help the ones below. The community is in crisis – as part of the community we should help. Strategy – Advocacy – to help, to speak for those who are unable to speak up. To defend and protect. e.g. ALS for those who need education who have no money or access to education. For women abused, to channel them to organization who has advocacy for them and help them.
