Welcome Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour are widely recognised as the finest sailing waters in the UK. Introduction The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), official host sailing venue for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was developed to take advantage of what are recognised as some of the best small boat sailing waters on the planet. The venue provided training facilities for the 2008 Games medal winning heroes, helping an overall medal haul of 4 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze. WPNSA is the first 2012 venue to be completed, over 3 years ahead of schedule and in budget with an active sustainable legacy programme. The combination of clean winds, sheltered waters and weak tides in the area is unique and this new World Class facility set in the centre of the Jurassic Coast, the only Natural World Heritage Site on the UK mainland, provides an unrivalled venue for training and sailing competitions and is committed to protecting the local environment, winning the 2008 Sport Industry Award for ‘Environmental Concern in Sport’. The Academy was developed through a strong partnership with the South West Regional Development Agency, Sport England Lottery Fund and the local authorities, working together to bring a strong vision into an exciting reality. The Academy is a not for profit company and has a management agreement with Sail-Force Ltd. Further marine works, funded by the Olympic Delivery Authority, have enhanced the venue and it now fulfils International Olympic Committee requirements. Development of the Academy has provided internationally recognised first class facilities including; 220 metres of slipway accessible at all states of wind and tide and 140 protected marina berths for ribs and yachts.

Membership The Sailing Academy welcomes new members. Membership is open to anyone who wishes to use the extensive facilities on a regular basis and wish to store equipment on site permanently. As a member you are still liable to pay harbour dues to help maintain the upkeep of the harbour. Temporary day membership is also available to all who wish to use WPNSA’s facilities. The fee covers launching, parking and use of the changing and social facilities, with overnight storage available if required. Day membership can be purchased for up to a maximum of 2 weeks per annum without joining WPNSA. Please note, day membership does not include harbour dues, this is a small fee that Portland Port charge to all those using the harbour. If you wish to stay overnight, we do have our own accommodation and take camper vans on site, although we cannot extend this to tents. Membership subscription year runs from 1st April to 31st March. Sailing Events and Training 2008 was another active and successful year for sailing events at WPNSA. International events included; the Moth World Championships attracting entrants from as far as Australia, Sail for Gold allowing competitors to race on the 2012 waters and the Tempest World Championships. The RYA UK Match Racing Championships were held at WPNSA, as were the British University Championships and Speed Week. WPNSA provided the press conference venue for the Qingdao medallist’s homecoming after their record medal haul. 2009 is proving another exciting year for WPNSA with the World Championships for the RSX Olympic windsurfing class, Farr 45 yacht event, Techno World Championships, Feva and Fireball UK National Championships, Sail for Gold Olympic ranking event and locally the South West Championships. From 2010, the Academy will begin gearing up for the 2012 Olympics, with international test events booked in for short periods in the summer of 2010 and 2011. The Sailing Academy is a very popular base for training and coaching at all levels. Fully equipped lecture rooms, safety Ribs and marks are available for hire, supported by excellent catering facilities. The British Olympic Sailing Team regularly train at WPNSA, and many have become members intending to make it the base for the majority of their sailing programme. Learning to Sail The Academy provides training for all levels of ability from beginners through to the Olympic sailors and works with the community, particularly schools and young people. Having chosen WPNSA as the home for the new Laser Sailing Centre, Sail Laser operate the sailing school at WPNSA and are a recognised RYA powerboat centre. Sail Laser will be offering a comprehensive range of RYA approved courses, most using video tuition to ensure you get the best training possible. Learning to Windsurf THE WINDSURF SCHOOL Our windsurfing school operates in the shallow waters of Portland Harbour - one of the most popular windsurfing destinations in the UK. RYA recognition means we pass standards set by the Royal Yachting Association and teach a course structure set by them. All our instructors have been trained to RYA standards. Courses take place every day of the week from April to October. Start times are generally 10.00am and 2.00pm, although we reserve the right to cancel lessons when there is unfavorable weather or tide. We provide free, all the equipment needed to take part, you just need to bring a pair of shoes you don’t mind getting wet and a towel.

WINDSURFING LESSONS TASTER - 1 DAY An excellent introduction into the sport. This is not an RYA course, but is a great way to introduce you to windsurfing in a safe environment. Children can be taught (depending on size!) Starting at 10am till 5pm with an hour lunch break RYA START - 2 DAYS Designed to kick start your windsurfing career, this course will get you to a standard that allows you to sail on your own. It covers all the practical and theoretical elements in a series of water based sessions. At the end of the course you will receive an RYA certificate allowing you to rent kit from centres worldwide, or be in the position to buy your own. Starting at 10am till 5pm each day with an hour lunch break

Legacy at WPNSA – Sail for £5 Chesil Trust Programme The Chesil Trust enables children and young people with disabilities, and those experiencing disadvantages or social exclusion to develop practical and leadership skills through delivering subsidised sailing training courses, ranging from introductory days through to qualification courses. During 2008, The Chesil Trust helped well over a thousand children and young people to participate in the initial introductory course, many of whom went on to further develop their skills in the certificated RYA Level 1 & 2 continuation courses. By providing access to training facilities for sailing and seamanship, The Chesil Trust works with young people including those at risk of involvement in drugs, alcohol, crime or exclusion from school, offering them new skills in teamwork and leadership, diverting them to a more constructive life and employment paths. We work with Dorset’s schools to identify children and young people who would benefit from this form of training. Many are at risk of exclusion from traditional career paths because of physical disability or low educational achievement. Children taking part in the ‘Sail for £5’ Chesil Trust Programme have the opportunity to try sailing in the same location where Team GB’s four gold medalists trained prior to Beijing this summer. Legend Ben Ainslie, golden girl Sarah Dempsey, new sailing star Paul Goodison and the gold medalist Iain Percy all train at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and understand the importance of inspiring new generations into the sport of sailing.
