An assistant professor in the Game Development and Entrepreneurship program, Dr. Bill Kapralos is currently involved in a number of video game development initiatives involving the training of community health nurses, critical care providers and orthopedic surgeons. Using this technology, multiple team members can participate in simulations concurrently, regardless of their physical location. This interactive team approach lends itself to increased skill level, knowledge and experience, all of which are essential to interprofessional education.

FACULTY RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: Dr. Carla Cesaroni, assistant professor Dr. Carla Cesaroni’s research examines the stress and adjustment of people who have been incarcerated. For the last decade she has studied the experiences of male youths serving custodial sentences. Dr. Cesaroni is currently conducting a study of 200 youths in detention centres throughout Southern Ontario.

Dr. Ann LeSage, assistant professor Dr. Ann LeSage’s current research focuses on remediation and intervention programs for students identified as at-risk in mathematics, the influence of learning objects on teacher candidates’ mathematics understanding, and the use of children’s literature in mathematics.

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES: Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Nuclear Engineering Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Energy Systems Engineering Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Health Physics and Radiation Science Bachelor of Engineering and Management (Honours) in Nuclear Engineering

Powerful ideas, powerful thinking Energy systems and nuclear science is a truly exciting area of study, presenting significant employment opportunities in a variety of fields for engineers and scientists possessing knowledge of the safe, efficient generation and use of energy, including fossil, nuclear, wind, solar, hydro, geothermal and emerging technologies. As a student you will have access to our new Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre, a 9,290-square-metre (100,000square-foot) facility that is home to UOIT’s unique-in-Canada energy science and engineering programs. UOIT’s Nuclear Engineering program is the first accredited program of its kind in Canada. As a student in this program, you will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities that reflect industrial applications and access to nuclear plant simulators and analysis tools. Alternatively you may choose our Energy Systems program, where you will examine all available options for energy production and integration of energy systems. Our Health Physics and Radiation Science program will teach you both the fundamentals and real life applications of the science of ionizing radiation. To help meet industry’s need for engineers with strong business skills, the faculty currently offers a five-year Management option in Nuclear Engineering. Students study the complete engineering program, and also gain critical management skills in key areas of business including finance, accounting, operations, marketing and human resources. Management options will soon be available in the Energy Systems Engineering program and the Health Physics and Radiation Science program.

FACULTY RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT: Dr. Ed Waller, associate professor After two years of research, Dr. Ed Waller has created a prototype of a radiological triage mask that emergency medical service responders can use to quickly and accurately identify radiation contaminants in patients, including individuals who may be the victims of radiological dispersal devices, or dirty bombs. Dr. Waller’s mask holds immense potential to save lives and is in the final stages of being developed into a marketable product.

We also offer Master’s degree programs in Nuclear Power and Radiological Health Physics and will soon begin a related PhD program.

Dr. Peter Berg, associate professor Dr. Peter Berg recently received a $380,000 research contract from Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America to support his research team in simulation and modeling of hydrogen fuel cell systems. Fuel cells have the potential to replace traditional combustion engines by using hydrogen as an alternative fuel source to reduce society’s dependence on environmentally damaging fossil fuels.

FINANCING YOUR EDUCATION Because your education is one of the most important investments you’ll ever make, our Financial Aid and Awards office works hard to ensure you have everything you need to meet your financial obligations. And, thanks to a newly expanded transit routes and the U-Pass, which provides you with unlimited access during the academic year to Durham Region Transit and GO Transit bus service in Durham Region, getting here has never been easier or more affordable. Durham Region Transit provides bus service in all the region’s communities, including recently added routes to campus from north Durham. More good news – as a UOIT student, you pay a reduced fee for GO Transit bus service to and from the campus from locations outside of the region, such as Scarborough, North York and Markham.
