A COMMITMENT TO RESEARCH IS A COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE

LIFE ON CAMPUS UOIT understands full well that your university experience is about more than just the challenges you face in the classroom. From your first day on campus, and even before, you will find activities and pursuits that meet your own unique interests. A variety of fun activities and informative sessions are planned to welcome you to campus and assist you with the transition to university. In addition, the Student Life office works year-round to offer you comprehensive orientation programming.

Partnerships are a priority for UOIT researchers because working with leading industries and businesses allows professors and students to apply their knowledge to real-world problems and provides ample opportunity to pursue groundbreaking research work. In fact, research opportunities for undergraduate students are a key differentiator between UOIT and traditional higher-learning institutions.

Many students get connected through dozens of campus clubs including groups that relate to your program of study such as the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association and Med Lab United. Other students pursue a popular interest or topic like the Cheerleading Team, while organizations such as Student Harmony and Students Against Social Injustice work toward a better world by advocating on key social issues.

Our faculty members understand that hands-on experience will give you an edge in getting a job or in the pursuit of graduate studies and research careers and they are eager to provide you with opportunities to undertake research projects. Student-faculty research collaborations happen on an ongoing basis and this unique one-on-one model is an important part of our student experience.

We even offer a Co-curricular Recognition program that supports and recognizes your participation and leadership in campus activities. Leadership awards and recognition ceremonies are held for graduating students in the spring. E.P. Taylor’s, one of UOIT’s campus pubs, is located in the Student Centre and is a popular spot to catch a regular lineup of great entertainment for all ages including comedy at lunch and Campus Idol. It even merited mention from the Harvard Crimson online edition. “To realize the potential of an on-campus pub at Harvard, one need only look at places like E.P. Taylor’s at UOIT,” wrote the Crimson. “With comedy shows every Monday, pub nights every Wednesday and huge all-campus events Friday and Saturday, the establishment is everything any student could wish for.”

As a student studying within the Faculty of Health Sciences, you will have the opportunity to participate in research practicums during your fourth year of study. Working alongside our world-class faculty, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience while turning innovative ideas into real solutions.

Examples of current Health Science research projects include:

If your interests run more towards the political arena, you may want to consider Your Student Association (Your SA), which works hard to serve the needs of all students. If you’re more the happy host, our Student Ambassador program could be just your thing. Student Ambassadors are proactive leaders who introduce prospective students and their families to the UOIT community by leading campus tours and providing a current student’s perspective.

:: Complementary and alternative medicine used by patients living with cancer in the Durham Region; :: Designing a next generation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) health informatics infrastructure for Canada; :: Studying the impact of new multidisciplinary integrated service to individuals living with HIV/AIDS;

We also offer student life programs, which promote intellectual and personal growth by connecting you to existing campus opportunities and assisting with the development of new initiatives. Staff liaise with Your SA, the Student Centre, residences, student clubs, academic units and all student services to enhance your student satisfaction.

:: Studying common challenges faced by social service workers; and :: Using simulation to educate police officers about mental illness.

Dr. Carolyn McGregor, an associate professor at UOIT, holds a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in recognition of her research in health informatics, groundbreaking work that has the potential to save lives and lower health-care costs.

“The Med Lab program has been an amazing learning experience. All of the hands-on work and fantastic professors have helped to guide me and my peers for the past three years. I am extremely excited to put everything I have learned into use in my clinical placement during fourth year.” –Bayan Sleiman, second-year Bachelor of Health Science student. https://connect.uoit.ca
