For example, our Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Health Science with specializations in Health Information Management and Kinesiology and Bachelor of Health Science in Medical Laboratory Science programs can take you from the bench to the bedside to the community. HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SPECIALIZATION Recognizing the increasing importance and role that health information plays in today’s health-care industry, the Faculty of Health Sciences offers a Bachelor of Health Science (Honours) – Health Information Management (HIM). Our faculty is committed to excellence and research in health information management and to that end, strives to prepare you to become an HIM leader nationwide. As a student in the HIM program you will be introduced to the fundamentals of HIM within the Canadian context, with an emphasis on the biomedical sciences, health information science (including information technology), privacy and security of health information, health information analysis and presentation (including epidemiology, research and statistics), ethical practice and management theory as it applies to the health system and health information management. Our technology focus will provide you with a strategic edge in the health information industry. As a student in the Kinesiology specialization you will study human movement and function with a focus on exercise and rehabilitation as it applies to the sciences of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology and psychomotor behaviour. In these areas of study, you will have the opportunity to take an in-depth look at the processes involved in motor control and the stages of motor learning. Principles will be applied to various dysfunctions of the motor system including means of prevention and assessment. This program will provide you with the fundamental knowledge to pursue graduate studies in medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy and chiropractic. As a graduate of the program, you will have completed the registration requirements to become a certified kinesiologist with the Ontario Kinesiology Association.

The BHSc in Medical Laboratory Science (Honours) degree is the first of its kind in Ontario. As a student in this program you will be introduced to the exciting world of health science with a strong focus on medical research. You will become skilled in the five main areas of the diagnostic laboratory – chemistry, hematology, histotechnology, microbiology and transfusion medicine. Professional communication, scientific writing and research skills will also be emphasized.

The post-diploma BScN program is an educational pathway available if you have successfully completed your Registered Practical Nursing (RPN) diploma from an approved program and are interested in pursuing your degree. As a student in the program you will build on your previous knowledge in science, nursing and additional disciplines, while being introduced to the latest in learning technologies to enhance your access as a working professional. This program will provide you with the flexibility to complete your degree in three years of full-time study or up to five years of part-time study.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS As a RPN seeking admission to the BScN program, you must be a graduate from an approved RPN diploma program and you will be required to submit transcripts to confirm your diploma completion. Preference will be given to individuals who have achieved a grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 or higher. In addition, applicants must hold a current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario. Licensure to practise as a registered practical nurse in Ontario must be maintained throughout the program.

CAREER OPTIONS As a RPN with a baccalaureate degree, you will have greater potential to advance your career and increase your salary. In addition, a BScN degree will offer you the ability to pursue employment in a variety of nursing areas including management positions and provide you with the building blocks to obtaining your graduate degree.

MASTER OF HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAM The Master of Health Sciences program specializes in two areas of study: Health Informatics and Community Health. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills required to conduct high-quality research in those areas while being challenged to push their boundaries of thinking and learning.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS :: Hold a four-year honours degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution in the area of graduate study or a closely related subject; and :: Have an overall academic standing of at least a B (GPA = 3.0 on a 4.0/4.3 scale), with a minimum B in the last two full-time years (four semesters) of undergraduate work or equivalent.

HEALTH INFORMATICS SPECIALIZATION Health Informatics focuses on the effective use of knowledge and simulation to improve health and healthcare. You will be immersed in a research-intensive learning environment that will provide you with research opportunities including patient journey modelling, data mining and security, clinical simulations, telehealth and artificial intelligence in health care. You will be prepared to design, implement and manage systems in a diverse range of health informatics services to more efficiently and effectively deliver healthcare and promote the health of broader populations.

COMMUNITY HEALTH SPECIALIZATION Focused on the environmental and social determinants of community health, as a student in this program you will conduct research in areas such as HIV/AIDS, kinesiology, nutrition, mental health and vulnerable populations. You will also have the opportunity to work with faculty members and partner with community organizations, health departments and other agencies on community-based research projects. Graduates will be in an excellent position to work in and with community organizations, health departments and other agencies to design research and analyze data oriented toward understanding and promoting the well-being of targeted communities.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is delighted to have the opportunity to work closely with our many business and community partners, which include approximately 60 community-based agencies and organizations across Ontario such as regional health and social service departments, social planning councils, hospitals, home care nursing services, health service organizations and many others. As a result of these interconnected relationships, we continually strengthen the education, employment and research opportunities we offer to students.

As a student in our nursing programs, you will also have access to our unique Interprofessional Centre of Excellence in Simulation, which features numerous simulated human beings, all of which are programmed to demonstrate many health conditions including different blood pressure readings and the loss of vital signs.

Building on our strong partnerships, members of our exceptional faculty also launched the Health Education Technology Research Unit (HETRU) to develop advanced technologies for creating teaching, learning and learning assessment environments based on rigorous research evidence. HETRU is designed to be an academic-business hybrid that drives advances in research related to technology use in education; promotes broadly-based partnerships among academics, institutions and businesses in Canada and other countries around the world; and develops technologies that will further advance health education from the novice student to the expert practitioner.

In addition, you will receive a personal digital assistant (PDA), a handheld computer loaded with the latest critical care software resources for use in simulation and within the practice setting and be introduced to Virtual Clinical Excursions, which will give you an interactive, virtual experience within a hospital setting to further advance your practical skills.

Our partnerships with local organizations such as Lakeridge Health Network and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences also provide our students with outstanding internships, placement and co-op opportunities. In addition, our mentorship program, in partnership with Lakeridge Health, helps new graduates transition smoothly into their careers with mentors providing years of experience and knowledge to graduates. All of this combined can open the door to a challenging and rewarding career.

Nursing students are not the only ones who benefit from our innovative technology. As a student in the BScN (Honours) or BHSc in Medical Laboratory Science (Honours) programs, you will apply scientific principles to health care by performing sophisticated laboratory tests using the two state-of-the-art health sciences laboratories we house on campus.Technology is changing the face of health care, but the profession will always be about the people. At UOIT’s Faculty of Health Sciences, you will learn how to successfully combine the technology and interpersonal skills required to be successful in the 21st century.

In addition, the Student Life office works year-round to offer you comprehensive orientation programming.

Partnerships are a priority for UOIT researchers because working with leading industries and businesses allows professors and students to apply their knowledge to real-world problems and provides ample opportunity to pursue groundbreaking research work. In fact, research opportunities for undergraduate students are a key differentiator between UOIT and traditional higher-learning institutions.

Many students get connected through dozens of campus clubs including groups that relate to your program of study such as the Canadian Nursing Students’ Association and Med Lab United. Other students pursue a popular interest or topic like the Cheerleading Team, while organizations such as Student Harmony and Students Against Social Injustice work toward a better world by advocating on key social issues.

Our faculty members understand that hands-on experience will give you an edge in getting a job or in the pursuit of graduate studies and research careers and they are eager to provide you with opportunities to undertake research projects. Student-faculty research collaborations happen on an ongoing basis and this unique one-on-one model is an important part of our student experience.

We even offer a Co-curricular Recognition program that supports and recognizes your participation and leadership in campus activities. Leadership awards and recognition ceremonies are held for graduating students in the spring. E.P. Taylor’s, one of UOIT’s campus pubs, is located in the Student Centre and is a popular spot to catch a regular lineup of great entertainment for all ages including comedy at lunch and Campus Idol. It even merited mention from the Harvard Crimson online edition. “To realize the potential of an on-campus pub at Harvard, one need only look at places like E.P. Taylor’s at UOIT,” wrote the Crimson. “With comedy shows every Monday, pub nights every Wednesday and huge all-campus events Friday and Saturday, the establishment is everything any student could wish for.”

STUDENT SUCCESS SCHOLARSHIPS FROM START TO FINISH AND AWARDS At UOIT we are committed to providing you with all of the support and services required for your success. Whether it is academic advising, tutors, interview preparation, financial assistance and more, valuable resources are at your fingertips and available to you without having to leave the campus.

UOIT offers a variety of scholarship awards and bursaries (www.uoit.ca/scholarships) to help meet the cost of your university education. These awards range in amount and may require applications. ACADEMIC ADVISORS Academic advisors provide guidance for students in the areas of academic goals, career planning and other issues related to student life. There are two academic advisors in the Faculty of Health Sciences – one is responsible for all of the Health Science and Medical Laboratory Science students, and the other is responsible for all of the Nursing and Allied Health Science students. Both are happy to assist with understanding academic policies and procedures and discuss your academic progress and standing with you. They are available for consultation and will provide direction for successful progression to graduation.

CENTRE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES The Centre for Students with Disabilities (CSD) makes sure reasonable accommodations are available with every program, enabling you to succeed in your chosen field. The centre works with students who are blind, have low vision, are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a physical, medical, psychiatric or learning disability. If you require assistance, a preintake form must be completed and submitted along with documentation from an appropriate medical professional who is familiar with you and your disability. In the case of learning disabilities, documentation should come from the diagnosing psychologist or psychological associate.

LEARNER SUPPORT CENTRE If you are looking for additional academic help, our Learner Support Centre (www.uoit.ca/lsc) provides learning skills support and online tutorials as well as peer writing tutors and writing and academic language specialists who will work with you if your first language is not English. Study and writing skills workshops are scheduled throughout the year and include a variety of topics such as time management, test taking skills, referencing and research strategies.

DIVERSITY OFFICE UOIT’s Diversity office supports you by working at a grassroots level with students, faculty and staff to help celebrate our campus’s diversity. The library offers both wired and wireless connections with comfortable study spaces and a reading room, complete with fireplace. Resources are offered in both paper and electronic format. Electronic resources, including e-books, electronic periodicals and recommended websites are made available through the library’s website, which you can access both on and off campus. SATISFY YOUR HUNGER UOIT offers a variety of meal plan options to suit every nutritional need and lifestyle, including flex dollars, which enable you to dine at all oncampus food service locations. Among our many food service areas, cafeterias and cafés is the South Village Residence Dining Hall, which is located conveniently on the ground level of the South Village Residence. Getting to campus has never been easier or more affordable thanks to newly expanded transit routes and the U-Pass, which provides you with unlimited access to Durham Region Transit and GO Transit bus service in Durham Region during the academic year. Durham Region Transit provides bus service in all the region’s communities, including routes to campus from North Durham. More good news – as a UOIT student, you pay a reduced fee for GO Transit bus service to and from the campus from locations outside of the region, such as Scarborough, North York and Markham. That means you’re an easy 39-minute trip to campus from the Scarborough Town Centre, and 48 minutes from the Langstaff GO Station.

LIVING AND LEARNING – RESIDENCE At UOIT, we offer the best of both worlds when it comes to residence – all the comforts of home in a unique campus community experience. Our state-of-the-art residences offer comfort, convenience, great friendships and the chance to connect with all that campus life has to offer. The Simcoe and South Village residences offer accommodation for 1,360 students and first-year students are guaranteed a spot if they meet the deadlines for accepting UOIT’s offer of admission and applying to residence. A number of new apartment-style residence units also opened in 2008 with additional units scheduled to open in the fall of 2009. These spaces are designed for students in their upper years of study.
