DSA is Getting Ready for the Sailing Season As we prepare for the 2010 racing season, your Executive Committee has been hard at work making sure that the new club assets are in tip-top shape for the use of our members. The 2 major assets that were acquired last season and this winter include the 17' Mako center console, and the 14' Novamarine inflatable. While both boats were in excellent condition compared to the previous committee boat, they still required quite a bit of work to get them ready as race committee platforms, and to ensure their longevity to the club. The work that was done to the boats includes the following lists; Mako Center Console 1. Refinish wood trim 2. Outfit with sign board and flag holders 3. Repaint bottom for protection against algae growth 4. Install dash-mounted VHF radio 5. Modification of electrical system to preserve battery life Novamarine Inflatable 1. Repair and repaint fiberglass hull 2. Apply synthetic rubber coating to inflatable tubes to repair weather damage 3. Install drink and radio holders and flag holders 4. Install additional "cooler" seat The "before" and "after" pictures should give you a sense of the work that was put into the 2 boats, and I hope that every member will take personal pride in keeping these club assets in their present pristine condition going forward. There is always more work to be done however, and we will be reaching out to the membership for assistance in the next few weeks. From dropping race marks, to cleaning up our common areas that we use at the marina, your support and assistance will be much appreciated. Look for email updates on DSA work days and for instructional sessions for the proper use of the new committee boats. Special Thanks to Nick Farina, Matt Hoster, Brian Damman, and Brendan Jordan spearheading the operations.

LIGHTNING FLEET REPORT Written by: Bill Cabrall
The Lightning Fleet held its annual winter party at Jan and Steve Davis's house on February 27th. Jan provided the main course while the rest of us brought side dishes and deserts, and a fantastic time was had by all. At the party, Bill Cabrall took over as the Fleet Captain, from Nick Farina. The fleet schedule was discussed, and membership forms were distributed. Bill has also, with help from Rebecca Espinosa and Jan Davis, written an article for the 2010 Lightning yearbook titled 'The Value of a Lightning'. Look for it in a newsletter near you soon! Bill also made a pitch for the fleet to come out in force at DSA's opening day, suggesting that we get as many boats in the water to circumnavigate the lake and start the season before enjoying the Bar-B-Q. March is Southern Circuit month in the Lightning universe, and several fleet members are attending this year. Nick Farina is crewing in the entire event, and Bill Cabrall will be going to the Miami and Saint Petersburg regattas. Mariel Yarbrough and Mary Anne Byrne will be crewing for Bill. Mary Anne is taking over for Raeyane Farrell who has been sidelined and in the hospital with blood clots in her lungs. Raeyane will recover fully, but cannot travel for a month (Boy, is this the wrong month for that!!). Jan Davis will also be in Florida to attend Lightning winter business meetings. It's going to be a great week and a half of racing, as time in Lightings always is!

The 2010 racing season is almost upon us despite the snow and frozen water. The most important part of a successful season, aside from sailing, is to volunteer for Race Committee. Please remember to pick 3 days or evenings of series racing. I will create a schedule on a first come-first serve basis. If you race and do not volunteer, I will assign you a date and it will be your responsibility to find a replacement if there is a scheduling conflict. Skippers, this is a great opportunity to bring new crew out on the water to watch the racing and learn both how to run races and see tactics on the water. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, there will be an orientation to both the Mako and RIB this spring stressing proper care and usage for each boat. This will take place on opening day in May (more information to come). Please plan on attending as these two boats are major assets to DSA and essential to the future of the club.

Project 1 Used Suitcases for Abused and Neglected Children Each Year several hundred children who are abused and at risk of additional injury at the hands of their parents are removed from their homes and placed in foster care for their own safety. Often this happens in the hear of the moment and the child's cloths and other belongings are packed on the spot. These children do not have luggage and many times their belongings are packed in plastic “trash” bags. The message is a clear and unhappy one in an already tense and unhappy situation. If are cleaning out your closet and want to donate used suitcases (duffels are fine too) so some of these children can have their belongings packed in a better way then email Fred Wolf at
[email protected]. Fred will come and get them and donated them to the Arapahoe County Social Services Department in the name of DSA membership. Fred will also be collecting them at the May first Opening Day celebration at Cherry Creek. The fleet that donates the most suitcases with get a “handle” (1.75ml) of Captain Morgan and recognition the DSA Newsletter. Clean out your closet, treat yourself to new luggage, ask your neighbors to contribute!

Welcome Rachel Daugherty Over the past 2 months the CSC Executive Director Search Committee has spent many hours interviewing for our new ED—we had over 40 resumes submitted and spoke to more than half. With so many wonderful resumes, it was a difficult decision, but we are confident that you will find Rachel a very competent and approachable leader for Community Sailing of Colorado. Rachel Daugherty grew up sailing in Arkansas and comes to CSC from New Orleans, where she was sailing director at Southern Yacht Club. Not completely foreign to cold weather, Rachel graduated from Fordham University in New York City where she was sailing team captain and a MAISA undergraduate representative. She’s been a racing coach at JWorld Sailing School in Key West and Newport and has spent several seasons instructing in Bermuda and the BVI. Rachel is a US Sailing Level I Instructor Trainer and currently sits on the board of the US Sailing Community Sailing Council. She’s very excited to bring even more sailing opportunities to Colorado, and can’t wait to learn to ski.
