Location: 1F Ba Jiao Building, Red House (No.10, Chengdu Rd., Wanhua Dist., Taipei City) In celebration of the 30th anniversary of two of King Hu’s legendary films, Legend of the Mountain and Raining in the Mountain, the 2009 Taipei Film Festival pays tribute to Hu by showing some of the most rare and valuable “behind the scenes” facts for fans and audiences alike. Both films Legend of the Mountain and Raining in the Mountain will have a special screening. For details, please refer to the TaipeiFF screening schedules.

“So, you speak French?” Eurasian YangYang has frequently been asked this question ever since she was little. She always answers it with an awkward smile since neither has she met her French birth father nor does she speak any French. She yearns for a family and her dream seems to come true when her mother remarries. Yet this new family turns out to be a disappointment. After that, nothing, not even some temporary passion, can ease her loneliness. Her quest for love is in vain.

13 Germany’s most acclaimed film directors come together to create Germany 09, a very personal panorama of the social and political situation in their country today. The film comes right in the middle of the social upheaval brought about by “Agenda 2010” on the path to the globalized 21st century, over 60 years after the end of World War II, 40 years after the student uprisings of 1968, 30 years after the 1977’s “German Autumn” and 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

It is a story about re-awakening, a journey from fear to freedom. Fausta suffers from “the milk of sorrow”, an illness transmitted through mother’s milk by women who have been violated during the war of terrorism in Peru. The war has ended, but Fausta lives to remember it because “the illness of fear” stole her soul. Now, her mother’s sudden death forces her to confront her fears and the secret hidden inside of her: she uses a potato to serve as a protective shield.

Dedicated to his father, the director composes ten short stories in How are you, Dad? It portrays ten fathers of distinctive ages from various backgrounds; the hard labor, the war veteran, the young-and-divorced, the vile gangster, the forgotten elderly, the busy celebrity, the retired general and the bankrupt businessman. From the ten relationships between the fathers and their children, we see the warmth and love of all fathers as well as the solitude in their lives.

A tale of five young Berliners - a taxi driver, a traveling wine dealer, a record shop sales girl, a film extra, and a model - spending a typical Sunday together. In this vivid snapshot of Berlin life, a trip to the countryside reveals the flirtations, rivalries, jealousies, and petty irritations c o m m o n t o a n y g ro u p o u t i n g . Coincidently, the viewer gains insight into the lives of different residents of the metropole, and follows them through their everyday activities.

It is a silent documentary contrasting the living conditions of Berlin laborers with those enjoying the city's villas. During the period of Weimar Republic (1919~1933), Berlin faced serious inflation problems and a rising unemployment rate. The film portrays the unfavorable living conditions of the working class in East Berlin, with contagious tuberculosis spreading and ailing children distressed. Slatan Dudow’s debut film speaks for the proletariat.

Boenicke and his son Franz have both been unemployed for a long time. The working-class family lives in Berlin and is six months behind on the rent. Since the future is uncertain, no help can be expected from social services. Boenicke’s family is compelled to move out of the apartment to a suburban tent camp "Kuhle Wampe" (meaning empty belly), located outside of Berlin on Lake Mueggel. Among the others there with a similar fate, the Boenicke's find a new home. However, other problems arise…

Manuela,14, is sent to an aristocratic girls’ boarding school after her mother’ s death. The school is run by an ironhanded headmistress, whose basic principles are discipline, orderliness and abstinence. In these surroundings, M a n u e l a b e c o m e s i n t ro v e r t e d . Her only ray of light is her teacher Elizabeth who shows the girls love and understanding. One day, Manuela declares her love for Elizabeth. The headmistress is scandalized and locks Manuela in the isolation room …

Hendrik and Willi are the owners of a canal barge. One evening, they spot a girl, Anna, who is apparently about to jump off a bridge. They both run to save her, but are disappointed to find out that she merely throws a note into the river to rid a bad memory. As Anna travels back to Berlin with them, the two friends both fall in love with her. The two men make an agreement with one another: whoever wins Anna must forfeit his claim to the barge.

In 1945, a surgeon, Dr. Hans Mertens, t r i e s to d ro w n h i s n i g h t m a r i s h soldier memories in alcohol in the midst of the ruins of Berlin. His life between drunkenness and self pity is interrupted when the real owner of his apartment comes back from a concentration camp. Susanne Wallner, a young painter, gets along with the new situation because she is eager to start a new life…

While hitchhiking to the Baltic, a group of girls meet a group of boys. They bet on who will get to the Baltic first. When they meet up on a Baltic beach, various encounters and provocations come up. Everybody is intrigued by the “ménage à trois“ between Brit, Wolf and Kai. Provoked by the girls, Brit spends half the night with Wolf in a barn... Nobody knows what happened there. A fight between Kai and Wolf ensues, and Brit almost loses both admirers.

A normal love story - except that it takes place during the Nazi era and into the 50s about a man, a woman, and a child. He is a soldier in the German army. She has to endure the bombings, rape and the privations of post-war years to build up her marriage again - only to break down in the end, like the whole brittle edifice of family bliss for which all three have waited for so long.

A group of bored terrorists in Berlin is practicing terrorism without realizing that they are manipulated by an industrialist. A computer combination uses their actions for their own aim. They want to force the government to buy better tracing devices. A black comedy that serves Fassbinder as a description of the psychic constitution of the third generation of RAFterrorists in 1977, one year after the RAF kidnapping and murder of industrialist Hans-Martin Schleyer.

Germany‘s top directors, including Volker Schlöndorff, joined forces to make this episodic film. Throughout the 70s, the RAF waged a campaign of terror against those in power, and the government‘s escalating efforts to root out the terrorists resulted in a siege by the autumn of 1977. Here is an immediate, impassioned response to the events of that autumn: the RAF murder of industrialist Hanns-Martin Schleyer and the subsequent, highly suspicious deaths of the imprisoned BaaderMeinhof terrorists.

A journey from the North to the South during the last year of the GDR. Everyone’s wish for change can be felt everywhere. Punk girls, female workers, intellectuals, mothers, young and old women – Helke Misselwitz talks to women about humanity in their county. In every meeting, you feel the mutual sympathy. Sympathy for the strong and self-confident women who point out the dubieties with confidence and for those who are looking for their place in life, struggling with it and working hard.

Philipp and Tanja teach at the same school. Tanja sees him as the love of her life and Philipp feels positively attracted to her as well. When a friend reminds him of an earlier erotic bond, he realizes that he is gay, a fact that has been repressed for years. Philipp meets Matthias and falls in love passionately. But Philipp lacks the courage to tell Tanja, who is expecting his child and the truth. At the same time, he equally fails to commit himself to Matthias.

Berlin 1943-1944. A love affair between two women blossoms, despite the danger of persecution and nightly bombing raids. One of the women is married and a mother of four children. For her, this will be the most decisive experience in her life. For the other woman, permanently under the threat of persecution because she is Jewish and a member of an underground organization, this love gives her the hope to survive.

Sun Alley paints an amusing life picture of young people in East Berlin in 1973, right on the border between East and West.17-year-old Micha Ehrenreich lives with his parents and sister on the divided street Sun Alley. Micha dreams of becoming a famous pop star one day. He doesn't really care about politics. Nonetheless, he does – like any young and rebellious person – talk of stirring up the entire social structure from the inside…

By the 1920s, Berlin was a gay Eden - until Hitler came to power. Adopting a rigid "pro-family" policy, the Nazis dusted off and expanded Paragraph 175, an arcane 1871 law outlawing sodomy, drove the thriving gay sub-culture underground, and soon began sending known - or suspected - homosexual men to concentration camps, where they were identified by pink triangles. Paragraph 175 features elderly homosexuals who describe their experiences during the Nazi era – and reveal the hidden chapter of history.

Lenin stated that under Communism, every housewife must learn to conduct state affairs. This film asks the question: when should she do so during the course of her fragmented and varied working day? The main character is no housewife but a busy freelance photographer with a child, a boyfriend and artistic ambitions. The film ridicules the socialist ideal of the all-round developed personality and, with a certain amount of humor, answers the question “Why do Women so rarely achieve anything?”

Helke Sander's groundbreaking twopart documentary on the crime of rape perpetrated against German women by the Red Army soldiers during the advance on Berlin in 1945.The first part interviews the raped women to speak —often for the first time in their lives—about their experiences of violence and compares the distinctive memories of the men and women involved.

The second part features the children born of these events. There are reports relating to the behavior of the German Wehrmacht, and official estimations of the number of children begotten by Germans in the occupied zone. The film reports on the medical consequences and how the institutions dealt with rape. Dr. Gerhard Reichling, a statistician and expert on flight and expulsion, draws conclusions from this collected data.

In East Germany, two friendly couples in their late thirties, are unhappy with nowhere to go. Chris, a radio host, and his wife, Katrin, don't have much in common anymore. The dreary life accidentally brings Ellen and Chris closer as they are both desperate for change. But they're caught in the act, and as a consequence, everyone is shaken from their stupor.

In 1850, Robert and his wife Clara settled down in Duesseldorf where he has accepted a position as an orchestra director. Clara is reduced to the role of housewife instead of acclaimed concert pianist until the young, brilliant Johannes Brahms comes to visit. With great affection for music, Johannes forms a close bond with the couple. However, as Clara and Johannes fall for one another, their bizarre relation creates a twist among the three and an unexpected marvel on the concert stage.

Hannah Maynard, a prosecutor at The Tribunal in The Hague manages to convince a young Bosnian woman to testify against an alleged war criminal. Amidst the inconsistency of political interests and threats coming from Bosnian Serb nationalists, she realizes that her opponents not only sit on the dock across from her, but are also found in her own ranks. Hannah faces the trial of her life, all of a sudden torn between her strong beliefs in the system and her loyalty towards the witness.

Four close friends traveled back to the North Sea where they spent their youth. Their journey helps them to make a few discoveries about themselves and, gradually, the ‘mood’ of a generation begins to emerge. An ‘indecisive generation’ that tries to leave all its options open; that refuses to make a firm commitment for fear of missing out on an opportunity. And so they continue to wait for the moment when their real lives will begin.

Rafael,13 ,has already lost his virginity, but has never kissed a girl. In 1960, a Cuban photographer captured a photo of Ernesto “Che” Guevara during a mass funeral. History conspired to highly publicize this dynamic portrait in 1968. In the last decade, with the establishment of the Internet, the image has once again travelled the globe in many forms. Chevolution explores how the Che image traveled from Korda’s studio in Havana to the streets of Europe and beyond; meanwhile, it investigates how this portrait with its enigmatic gaze became a symbol for countless visions for change.

Diego and his sister Andrea spend the summer in the family villa together with their father and his new young girlfriend. Torn between the extreme love for his sister and the difficult relationship with his father, spending days and nights together with his friends going from party to party where alcohol, drugs and money are not a problem, Diego struggles to find a place in this upperclass society where all characters behave as gods: beyond rules, beyond morality and beyond belief.

At an early age, a group of children began to work in the Mexican countryside. The Inheritors is a portrait of their lives and their daily struggle for survival. These children work on farming, carving wooden alebrijes, shepherding, making bricks, weaving cloth, looking after their little siblings, collecting water and harvesting crops. They have inherited tools and techniques from their ancestors, as well as their day-by-day hardship. Generations pass and child workers remain captive in a cycle of inherited poverty.

Raquel has been working as a maid for an affluent Chilean family for 23 years. Having a sense of belonging with the family, she refuses any additional help from the new maids for they are considered as threat to her standing. Raquel drives the newcomer away with cruel and childish psychological abuse since she holds power over her mistress, Pilar. One day, a cheerful woman from the countryside, Lucy, is hired when Raquel suffers from her chronic migraine in bed…

Away from his body, the severed head of Juan Pérez recalls what led him to lose his head. After a dreadful economic crisis, and in order to keep his place in his beloved circus, Juan Pérez promises a sensational beheading act that could certainly bring the glory back to the big top. With the clock ticking and no money to build an artifact like this, the magician is forced to steal an original Guillotine, without knowing that it carries a deadly curse.

It is a story about re-awakening, a journey from fear to freedom. Fausta suffers from “the milk of sorrow”, an illness transmitted through mother’s milk by women who have been violated during the war of terrorism in Peru. The war has ended, but Fausta lives to remember it because “the illness of fear” stole her soul. Now, her mother’s sudden death forces her to confront her fears and the secret hidden inside of her: she uses a potato to serve as a protective shield.

Beto is a Mexican custodian of an empty house where he used to work as a domestic butler. The solitude of the last decade and the monotony of his job have led him to a secluded life and a fear of the outside world. News that the house is up for sale causes a dilemma for Beto; he doesn’t know whether to start a new life or remain in his confinement. The violent stories he sees on TV may be an answer for him…

A collection of tales by ghosts telling stories about the moments when they died. Wondering by the door between Life and Death, you are neither dead nor alive, but sort of in a limbo. The film spells out the loneliness and sadness, passion and remorse, love and violence that haunted the characters’ lives. The common folk tales may be frivolous, but what can be more humane than the realization of dying?

Rain is a spirited 14-year-old who, after her grandmother’s death, forgoes her sheltered home on Ragged Island to seek out her estranged mother in Nassau. Her dreams of a loving reconciliation are quickly shattered when she meets Glory, a drugaddicted prostitute bearing no resemblance to a mother. Confronted by unforeseeable trials, Rain’s deeply rooted spirit brings two allies into her life: an inspiring track coach and a charming, rebellious teenage neighbor. In time, Rain’s spirit and talent take her to unimaginable heights.

The story of two men who love each other but refuse to become attached to both the spatial and temporal. Yet they are trapped in an eternity dictated by the essence of their reasons of being, which will take them on a journey that transcends the real world while other forces join to enforce and modify their vital acts.

When the national television announces a Tony Manero impersonating contest, he knows it’s an opportunity for him to achieve his dream: being a successful showbiz star. It is a story about loss, identity and obsession in the recent Chilean history.

Once a week, Tuesday is a bread day. A wagon with loaves of bread is pushed by the locals into a village along the bumpy railway track. Once the bread goes on sale, endless difficulties arise. Nobody receives the amount of bread he expects and complaints are everywhere. However, when the wagon has to head back to the branch line for the locomotive to pick up, the villagers recover into solidarity and push the heavy wagon together.

A circus family travels on the highway in a shabby mini-bus. Stopping here and there to perform in front of a handful of villagers. With the barren Kazakh steppes in the background, the children lift a giant steel ball with their teeth, lie down on a bed of glass and perform acrobatics. A baby eagle, found in the grass, becomes their mascot. In the most surreal of scenes, they fall asleep to their mother’s lullaby, as the eagle looms over them contentedly.

After completing his naval service, young Asa travels back to Kazakh steppe where his sister and her husband lead a nomadic life. To start his new life as a shepherd, Asa must get married first. His only hope for marriage on the deserted steppe is Tulpan, who unfortunately doesn’t return his affection simply because he has big ears. Determined to fulfill his ideal life, Asa decides to continue with the pursuit of his dream.

Sang-hoon, a merciless debt collector, grew up with rage and hatred towards his father. The shadow of the past overrules his present. One day, he meets a high school girl, Yeon-hee, who is also having a tough life after her mother’s death. Sang-hoon and Yeon-hee share some moments of relief and escape from brutal physical and emotional abuse. He discovers that perhaps he can change and affect people around him, but it may be too late to start his life over again.

Manzo is a 38-year-old bachelor and a lonely fisherman. "I can't stand this anymore." His deep sorrow echoes emptily in the house. One day, a party for prospective brides to meet the bachelors in town takes place. Manzo wears his best outfit and attends the party, but the result is a crushing defeat. Then, intruders suddenly appear in the lonely house. He warms up to the two intruders because he longs for a happy family. A strange house-sharing situation is born.

Disgrace takes place in post-apartheid South Africa. David Lurie, a university professor, is fired from his job for a passionate but brief affair with a student who is ambivalent about his embraces. This “disgrace” causes him to retreat to his daughter Lucie’s isolated farm. The tentative emotional truce between errant father and daughter soon gives way to a more peaceful rural life…until it is ripped apart by a traumatic and violent attack which forces them both to re-evaluate their beliefs.

Having a sense of belonging with the family, she refuses any additional help from the new maids for they are considered as threat to her standing. Raquel drives the newcomer away with cruel and childish psychological abuse since she holds power over her mistress, Pilar. One day, a cheerful woman from the countryside, Lucy, is hired when Raquel suffers from her chronic migraine in bed…

After studying abroad, Laura returns to Geneva. She is in her early thirties and her life should contain some sort of stability by now. Feeling lost, she tries to act as an average person but the voice inside her head always tries to make her act differently. One evening, she meets Simon, a wandering teenager who sells “free” newspapers and invites him to her flat. Soon, she finds herself helpless about the harsh way in which he takes over control.

On Mother's Day in Taipei, ChenMo makes a date for dinner with his wife, hoping to bring their estranged relationship back together. While buying a cake on his way home, a car unexpectedly double parks next to his car, preventing his exit. For the entire night, Chen-Mo searches the floors of a nearby apartment building for the owner of the illegally parked car, and encounters a succession of strange events and eccentric characters.

Beto is a Mexican custodian of an empty house where he used to work as a domestic butler. The solitude of the last decade and the monotony of his job have led him to a secluded life and a fear of the outside world. News that the house is up for sale causes a dilemma for Beto; he doesn’t know whether to start a new life or remain in his confinement. The violent stories he sees on TV may be an answer for him…

After the dictation in Argentina, Alba, just out of prison, comes to get her 6-year-old son, Inti, to El Bolson, a lost valley in Patagonia where renegades from all corners of the world find refuge. In an endless party, gather among the “enlightened”, the hippies, insects and animals. The children of the peasants have fun by attacking the houses of newcomers. They try to build a new life. Alba hanging on to her dreams, Inti to his survival kit.

Axl wants to find his long-lost father and rediscover his past. Vera just wants to forget hers and move on from a recent heartbreak. Their stories interweave as they take up residence in a vibrant, sprawling squat in the melting pot of London’s hip East End. Although they live in the same warehouse and their stories cross repeatedly, Axl and Vera never actually meet. After a car accident, Alex can't even remember his name. In an attempt to cure him from amnesia, his Bulgarian grandfather Bai Dan organizes a spiritual journey for his grandson, back into his past, to the country where he came from. While traveling across time and place and crossing half of Europe, they play backgammon, the simplest, and yet the most complex of all games. This game leads Alex to recall who he is, and that backgammon is the key to his backstory.

“So, you speak French?” Eurasian YangYang has frequently been asked this question ever since she was little. She always answers it with an awkward smile since neither has she met her French birth father nor does she speak any French. She yearns for a family and her dream seems to come true when her mother remarries. Yet this new family turns out to be a disappointment. After that, nothing, not even some temporary passion, can ease her loneliness. Her quest for love is in vain.

一名來自高雄旗津的中年男子，為了爭取

一個專門為查無此人的「死信」找主人的

Li Wu-hsiung is a middle-aged man from a fishing village in southern Taiwan. Seven years ago, his girlfriend disappeared after giving birth to their daughter, Mei. When Mei is old enough to go to primary school, he finds out that his ex-girlfriend was married to someone else years ago, which makes her and her lawful husband the legal guardians of Mei. Terrified that Mei will be taken away from him, Li climbs over one of the city’s busiest intersections and threatens to jump…

A postman in search of the receiver of a mail with no address, learns that it’s the under-age prostitute Lin and that he’s the one who opens the door to death for her. An unhappy high school girl, Fang, is suspected by everybody because she didn’t answer the last call of her best friend Coco before committing suicide. To everyone’s surprise, Lin and Coco turn out to be the same girl. Now the mail has its correct address…

Miao Miao is a shy and self-contained exchange student from Japan. One of her classmates Ai becomes her best friend before she’s used to this busy city. But Miao Miao and Ai are completely different in every way. Miao Miao meets the owner of a CD shop named Chen Fei and admires him secretly. But he’s stuck in his tragic past and refuses to let anyone into his heart. That’s when Miao Miao decides to go back to Japan…

On Mother's Day in Taipei, ChenMo makes a date for dinner with his wife, hoping to bring their estranged relationship back together. While buying a cake on his way home, a car unexpectedly double parks next to his car, preventing his exit. For the entire night, Chen-Mo searches the floors of a nearby apartment building for the owner of the illegally parked car, and encounters a succession of strange events and eccentric characters.

Guei is a 15-year-old color-blind girl. She admires her cousin Xian. Xian has a world map and a whole bookshelf of traveling guides. He often takes Guei on imaginary journeys to a world full of wonders. They guard the secrets for each other and plan to get out of here someday, leaving for a place without loneliness or alienation. The future is a place untrodden, and their Utopia lies at the other end of the horizon. Will they get there at last?

“So, you speak French?” Eurasian YangYang has frequently been asked this question ever since she was little. She always answers it with an awkward smile since neither has she met her French birth father nor does she speak any French. She yearns for a family and her dream seems to come true when her mother remarries. Yet this new family turns out to be a disappointment. After that, nothing, not even some temporary passion, can ease her loneliness. Her quest for love is in vain.

Frostlight awaits her lover, Westwind, at the port. Right before the ship sets sail, a war breaks out. Separating the two at the docks, Frostlight quickly boards a mysterious ship and departs on a perilous and fantastic journey. This strange ship carries a cast of helpless and tormented souls, drifting through a mysterious space. Fearing that the evil Asura will strike the ship and steal the souls, Frostlight, against her selfish nature, makes the ultimate sacrifice.

A flaman found an ancient species in the Pingzhai Village. With his proposal, three households started to plant the species in an old traditional way. Unexpectedly, the issue echoes around the authorities and the academia, which then put a high premium on the local agriculture. An excess of fertilizer on the crops in the past has seriously damaged the soil, yet the ancient species still grows well. It somehow reminds the farmers to cherish what they originally own.

The 6th inning is the last inning of the Little League game, also a turning point of the game. Eight years ago, Chang Mao-shan, a coach, introduced baseball into Fuyuan, a village in eastern Taiwan. The Fuyuan Little League team has been regarded as a prominent team for the National League. However, in Chang’s mind, what comes more important than the game results is the change of the young players and their parents. Chang is thus inspired by them.

Heat Sun tries to discuss some issues on wars and humanity. The Pacific War broke out in December, 1941, and many Taiwanese were mobilized to the battles. But while some died on the battlefields, most of them were neglected, forsaken or even monitored after the war, struggling for survival. They dare not look back on their experiences during the war, describing them as the darkest memories of their lives. After they have lost their so-called motherland, they don’t know where to go anymore.

20 years ago, the director of this film read an article about the Taiwanese veterans and learned they had the same experiences as his father did. They were forced by the war to leave their hometowns, and 40 years later, the survivors were finally home. In Taitung, the director meets Siki Sufin, an Amis young woodcarving artist. Together they set off on a journey in search for the surviving veterans, from the Dulan tribe to several major cities in Mainland China.

1979年台灣發生多氯聯苯毒油事件，成為

1959年至今，西藏人流亡快半個世紀；自

台東聖賢宮，一間小廟，兩名練八家將的

幾個遭受婚姻暴力的婦女，娓娓道出自己

金鐘獎最佳導演劉嵩，與拍攝團隊深入中

知音難尋、離婚率又高的現代社會中，應

環境公害史上最嚴重的悲劇。三十年後，

稱文明古國的中國政 權，相較 納粹對 猶

少年，日常的生活樣貌。影片藉由幾個練

的家暴故事，她們以堅韌的意志力，和同

國黃土高原上的黃羊川，傾聽及觀看那裡

運而生的進化版媒婆，如何撮合對對佳偶？

台灣已成為亞洲最民主國家之一，但油症

太人的大屠殺，到底迫害了多少藏人？吳

將少年在廟裡參與八家將活動和現實生活

儕間的相濡以沫，尋求尊嚴與自由，走出

樸實的生活，看見生活中所展現的溫韌生

導演不當鏡頭後面冷靜的觀察分析者，反

受害者卻無人聞問。影片尋訪當年不幸中

米森從自身經驗出發，從身邊常見的西藏

的遭遇，來觀看台東的生活環境、廟堂的

婚姻的惡夢。以《海棠、馬沙與珊瑚》獲得

命力。全片由十九幕農村片段組成，再

In our contemporary society, pervaded by desperate loneliness, it seems almost impossible to live with one specific person for your whole life. But how does a modern matchmaker expand her business in such a context? Is marriage a disaster? Why do the single try so hard to plunge into it, while the married ones want to break out of it? You cannot have everything you want, but we know that marketing is the best way to sell anything.

In 1979, two major incidents happened in Taiwan: the PCBs poisoning, which damaged our environment drastically, and the Kaohsiung Formosan Incident, which was a turning point in Taiwan’s history. 30 years later, Taiwan became the most democratic nation in Asia, but the victims of the PCBs poisoning have disappeared without a trace. This film locates several victims and tries to uncover the scientific truth of it. The forgotten survivors and their children are still fighting with the remaining poison in their blood…

In 2006, a railroad was finished to connect Tibet with the Qinghai Province. But what is a train like? A wandering iron dragon? What does it predict then? Since 1959, the Tibetans have been in exile for half a century. The government of China prosecutes them culturally and spiritually. Exactly how many Tibetans have been killed? The answer is still unknown to us.This is a film recording the real experiences of the Tibetans abroad, including India, the United States, Taiwan, etc.

In southeastern Taiwan, the Taitung County is famous for its Lantern Festival culture. The film picks a small temple and records the traditional ritual of “Eight Song Commanders” by two teen performers. Through their performance and daily experiences, we’re able to understand Taitung, the temple subculture and even the gangsters. The ritual of “Eight Song Commanders” is to guard and pray for our people, but why do many of us have bad impressions of these teens?

With strong willpower, four women remain in their unhappy marriages for the sake of their children and seek passionately for their dignity and freedom. But a bad marriage not only damages them, it also hurts their children. A child who witnesses his father beating his mother or is beaten along with his mother may have doubts about love. How do these four women face all the difficulties in life? And how will they make their futures better?

This is a documentary consisting of 19 scenes of rural life, brought together by a blind singer, with no narratives, no subtitles, no traditional storytelling, no protagonists or antagonists, only the details of farmers’ everyday lives. “Yellow Sheep River” is a small rural village in the northwestern China. The simple life there is filled with vitality of the day-to-day trivia, which shows us the changing lights and shadows from dawn to dusk and from spring to winter.

《娘惹滋味》主角莫愛芳飾演一名想回鄉的印傭，照顧一個藏住護照不放她走的老人，還要面對 一個被老爸視為窩囊廢的兒子。生活充滿瑣碎的細節，關係卻又無比緊張。

The film interweaves major events selected from Duras' works and presentes the following sequence: life, man, ocean, letters, writing and death. The narration shifts among three perspectives. With this tactic, the director strives to recapture “the elusive and ephemeral nature of memory” in Duras' works.

An internet forum system is threatened to be destroyed by a hacker named “Intoxicant”. Six online users start to suspect each other. When the countdown to annihilation begins, the chaos between identity and trust starts to grow.

Yen Hao awakes and finds himself in a polluted industrial city. Wandering in the hell-like city, Hao meets his father. Following his father back to their hometown, Hao runs into himself as a child. Confronting his younger self and his estranged father, Hao’s wound is ripped open.

一名女警牙痛得要命，被同事逼去看牙醫，竟巧遇牙醫診所發生搶案。搶匪假扮醫生護士，在女警 的堅持下替她拔牙。台灣少見的黑色喜劇，編導演都出色，陸奕靜飾演的女警更為全片增色不少。

兄弟姊妹回到鄉下，處理母親的後事，商量著要不要和靈骨塔中的父親合葬，么妹卻連續數夜夢到 母親託夢拒絕與父親合葬。回首往事，再度浮現母親生前在家中，所承受父親的男性暴力陰影。

In Panic House, everyone has his own fear. An ill-tempered cop, who hates to go to the dentist but happens to have an aching tooth, mistakes the concealed robber for the dentist. The robber has to perform the tooth-extraction while the dentist is desperate for rescue.

It begins with a funeral of an elderly mother. For nights, the youngest daughter of the family has been dreaming of her dead mother, who expresses her unwillingness to be buried next to her dead husband. The hidden past of the family is finally revealed.

Two species, the Cattle and the Ape, dwell on a planet with a big machine which needs energy to produce the Apes’ favorite food: cream. In order to get more cream, the Apes exploit the Cattles until the latter die out. But the Apes can’t stop their ever–growing desire…

The story occurs in a bleak world. An old man who collects live specimen finds a fascinating insect on hunt. The insects lead him into a fantasy world where he becomes a prey instead.

2008 坎城影展短片單元 男孩和家人努力種植蕃茄，希望蕃茄夠紅夠大，可以作成蕃茄醬。但為了種出鮮紅的番茄，就得付 出「血」汗，人類鮮紅的血。提姆．波頓風的偶動畫，呈現人類貪婪及生產與勞力的關係。

取材真實經歷，並參酌美國精神科醫生凱．傑米的傳記名作《躁鬱之心》，以實驗動畫呈現躁鬱症 患者不為人知的心理狀態。幻影般的狂亂視覺、飄浮的囈語，直指著幽暗騷動的心靈。

In a small village, a young boy and his family in deep struggle to grow tomatoes that are ripe and juicy enough to be made into ketchup. It turns out only human blood is the only fertilizer to yield good result. A story conveys the correlation between greed and productivity.

Inspired by Kay Redfield Jamison's book, An Unquiet Mind, the film is Shuei’s mercurial journey of mood swings and deep restlessness. He witnesses his body in a coffin in Samsara, a place where life is a cycle of death and rebirth.

This is a documentary that pays homage to the master Antonioni, a masterpiece amongst all his films. The master once said, “I respect and love China.” He concentrated himself in painting after retirement. His pieces of arts resemble the traditional Chinese ink paintings, the landscapes in both of which are surprisingly alike. With his documentaries, he filled in the blanks in the history of China. But as the master comes closer to us through a documentary, he gets farther and farther away from us.

The two couples were once in love when they were classmates in college. Ten years after graduation, they reunite again, but time hasn’t alienated them at all. They still quarrel over those tenyear-old topics. They haven’t forgotten their past but don’t have enough courage to face the buried feelings for each other. Their lost love is like the seemingly silent but turbulent streams underneath, flowing like a maze and holding on tightly to their secrets.

Old Zhu, approaching retirement age, is a steam engine driver in the Jalainur coal mines while his apprentice Li Zhizhong is a signalman. They’ve been working together for years, inseparable both at work and in life. One day, Zhizhong is stunned to find that Old Zhu left earlier to visit his daughter at the border. Zhizhong follows Old Zhu, but decides to leave when Old Zhu’s daughter and son-in-law show up. Zhizhong misses the return train and lingers on around the border.

Dividing 24 hours in Taipei into 8 segments, 8 filmmakers depict a day in Taipei. It opens with Cheng Feng-feng's upbeat and comic Share the Morning, and has Li Kang-sheng running the final leg of this "relay" with Remembrance at 4am, with Tsai Ming-liang making a rare screen appearance visiting the final night of a coffee shop. In between, Miao Miao's Cheng Hsiao-tse tells a puppy-love story, and DJ Chen's Dream Walker takes a magical ride on Taiwan's subway.

Ming Ding is an illegal Chinese immigrant working as a deliveryman for a Chinese take-out shop in New York City. In order to pay off his debt to the smugglers who brought him to the US, he needs to make more than double his average daily income. Throughout the upper Manhattan neighborhood where social and economic extremes exist side by side, the film presents a harsh and realistic look at the daily lives of illegal Chinese immigrants nowadays.

A five-segment documentary introduces the lives of 5 teenagers from different countries. Sara from Japan carries a portable Shinto shrine. Congolese girl, Vida, lives in a shelter, making a living by performing puppet shows in the street. A Finnish young couple have different plans for life while two Brazilian teens lead polar opposite lives—one from the slum and the other from the rich. As for Zi-yun and Guan-de in Taiwan – she wishes to meet her favorite celebrity while he is missing his mom.

The film speaks to our connectionswith each other, with our family history, with technology and with the modern world. Simon, a high school student, re-imagines that a news item is his family's story, with the terrorist standing in for his dead father. As he uses his new persona to participate in the virtual communities on the Internet, it triggers an avalanche of public attention. Sabine, the school teacher, is determined to find out the truth...

Kanao, a courtroom portrait artist, silently observes the highest profile crimes and scandals of the 1990s and the decline of Japanese values. Matti , a police inspector, Erkki, a photographer, and Rauno, an actor, are childhood friends who lost touch growing up. They meet coincidentally on a Christmas Eve in Helsinki and spend the night together in a karaoke bar. Amid drinking and singing, they tell about the joys and sorrows of their lives, revealing some painful experiences, and even tearing their friendship apart. When a mysterious woman enters the bar, the events take a dramatic turn.

Yuan is a young female illustrator. She became famous right after her first book was published. Then the publisher wants her to add more family stuff to her second work. However, she comes from a single-parent family, never knowing what it is like to have a family with both parents. That’s when she decides to look for her inspiration in a remote library, in search of her lost memories at the same time…

Andy and Mike set up a spoof website modeled on that of the WTO. Some visitors send invitations meant for the real thing. They gleefully play along with the ruse and find themselves attending important functions as official WTO representatives. Delighted to speak as the organization they oppose, they set out to shock their unwitting audiences with outrageous, darkly comic satires on global free trade. Weirdly, the experts don’t notice the joke and seem to agree with whatever appalling idea.

Equally shocking and hilarious, The Yes Men Fix The World is directed by The Yes Men (Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno) in collaboration with Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 911 editor Kurt Engfehr, who co-directs. Through this blistering feature documentary, we nervously follow the daring political pranks of two gonzo activists as they take on the fake identity of corporate executives in a bid to highlight the greed and brutal selfishness of some of the world’s biggest and most powerful multinational corporations.

本片與《山中傳奇》於同一年在韓國完成，

蔡明亮重新詮釋普契尼的《蝴蝶夫人》，

蔡明亮接受法國羅浮宮的邀約，拍攝《臉》，

韓國深山拍攝外景，劇情描述宋代書生何

展現導演高度美學運鏡技巧，故事敘述明

邀請《黑眼圈》主角蔡寶珠主演。風韻猶

特別邀請多位楚浮生前合作的演員與蔡導

裡發生口角，沒想到露巴一覺醒來卻發現

雲青隻身前往西山抄寫佛經以超渡亡靈，

朝中葉三寶寺住持智嚴自知圓寂將至，遂

存的寶珠到吉隆坡跟她的男人幽會，第二

The successful opera diva Lyuba takes a last trip to the remote town of Yuriev in the middle of nowhere. Wanting to sell all her property here she uses the opportunity to show her adolescent son Andrey, where she grew up in order to finally leave her hometown behind forever. Mother and son wander aimlessly through the streets of this alienated place until something unforeseen happens and Andrey disappears mysteriously.

This film is inspired by the supernatural tales in Song Dynasty. A scholar is commissioned to copy some Buddhist scriptures to raise the dead from suffering. He travels to the Western China but is unfortunately tricked by the evil spirits, incarnated as two beautiful women. But which one of them is truly in love with him? Supernatural things happen one after another, and the scholar has no other choice but to seek help from a Taoist priest. A battle between human beings and ghosts thereby begins.

In the middle of Ming Dynasty, an abbot realizes he’s going to die soon. So he starts to look for his heir among his disciples. However, he chooses an ex-convict Ming Qiu, who has become a Buddhist monk not long ago. Now, Ming Qiu becomes the target of all those who covet for the most wellknown Buddhist scripture in the monastery. He takes the responsibility to guard the scripture. At last, he burns it to keep it away from the evil.

Baozhu, a married woman, comes all the way to Kuala Lumpur to meet her secret lover. When she wakes up the next day, the man is gone, leaving her a pile of unpaid bills. She can’t afford to go back home and is forced to search everywhere for her man. Then she fights with him over cell phone in a bustling bus station. No one around her can do anything to help. Only the street music performers can sing to comfort her.

Making a film is similar to painting. The only difference is that film is a larger work, without any familiar logics. The director tries to interweave d re a m s a n d re a l i t y t o m a k e i t an illusion for the audience. His characters in the film jump between the fictitious world and the real one, among their different roles. He focuses on how to turn death or the conflicted feelings into his inspirations, and how to erase the thin line between death and dreams…

Ashes of Time is inspired by Louis Cha's novel, The Eagle-Shooting Heroes. It centers on a man named Ouyang Feng. Since the woman he loves rejected him, he has lived in the western desert, hiring skilled swordsmen to carry out contract killings. His wounded heart has made him pitiless and cynical, but his encounters with friends, clients and future enemies make him conscious of his solitude...

Lara’s parents are both deaf. Since little, she has served as a kind of foreign minister for her family, translating and negotiating for them even in the most absurd situations. When Lara receives a clarinet as a gift from her aunt, she begins to discover the wonder of music. Her father observes this development and fears losing his daughter to a world he has no access to. When Lara decides to attend a music conservatory, her difficult and painful process of leaving home begins.

The story is about a hearing-impaired young man who decided to embark on a 7 day round-island bicycle trip all by himself before graduating from college. He starts off from the city Kaohsiung and travels around the Island of Taiwan counter-clock wise. In the 7 short days, he meets 12 fascinating travelers, experiences deep and rich emotions and sees the beautiful shorelines of the Island.

A Talentime campus competition o rg a n i z e d b y C i kg u A d i b a h h a s matched two hearts - that of Melur, a Malay-mixed girl and an Indian male student, Mahesh. Another of the seven finalists, Melur plays the piano whilst singing with her melodious voice. Likewise, Hafiz is enthralled by his vocalist talent which complements his guitar skills, yet he needs to divide his time between school and mother, who is hospitalized for brain tumor.
