“Sharing a common thread!” Board Meeting The next board meeting will be Tuesday, August 4, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.
Guild Meeting Our next guild meeting is August 11th.. Pat Lucas from Heartland Quilt Shop in Algona, Iowa is our speaker. We will meet Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny at 7:00 p.m. We are wrapping up the 2008-2009 guild year. We will have election of officers in August. Linda Northwick reminds us that the “show & tell” poker game ends in August. POKER GAME - MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN. If you have been playing Poker with us this year, it's time to let me know what your best hand is from the cards you have collected. Remember it must be a real hand. (A pair does not mean 2 of the same card- it means 2 different cards with the same number) You must be present to win since you need to tell me your best hand. (Okay a friend may do yours for you). The cards will be tossed at the end of the meeting. We are kicking off the new guild year in September with Kari Carr of New Leaf Stitches. It's time to signup for Kari's mini-mystery workshop! Please let Pam Messer know if you would like to participate. More details about the workshop are on page 2 of the newsletter. You've been asking for weekend workshops—be sure to sign up for the Lynn Witzenburg machine trapunto class on Saturday, October 17th! More details are on page 2 of the newsletter.
Presidents Letter Wow, does time fly!! My year as president is nearly over only one more meeting. Thanks to everyone on the board you were great to work with. And thanks to the guild, I was a little worried about becoming president because I can get my feelings hurt pretty easy, but everyone has been so nice even when you had to voice a concern. Please keep supporting our new board, Laura especially. Please consider filling our vacant board position -newsletter, if you ever thought you would like to get to know the members of our guild better this is the place for you. I think we have had a great year financially thanks to our whole guild, "it takes a village" whether it is helping with the quilt show's various needs or changing to email newsletters---every little bit helps. Whew, I look forward to coming to meetings and just sitting down and listening. But on the other hand I will miss going out to dinner with our speakers before our meetings. Because nice matters, (Becky, thanks for letting me use your phrase this year)
Debbie Pierschbacher, President

Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative: So what's next??? Since I missed the "unveiling" of the challenge quilts I was excited to see so many of them at the quilt show. WOW! I was in awe of your creativity! Now you might be wondering what to do with them. If you will bring them to the August (or September) meeting, I will have the forms there that you will need to fill out to send them all together. This isn't necessary...you could send them off separately if you want. Remember, if you have used a pattern, please have an "OK" from the designer...you just contact them (email address is usually on the pattern) and explain what you are doing and they will most likely send their "OK" and "congratulations." You will also need to figure out approximately the amount you spent on supplies/what it is worth (to go on the form). If you are completely confused, just check out: www.AlzQuilts.org Thanks everyone who participated. Donna Jo & Kay

There were lots of rave reviews for this years special guest speaker. Pam Clarke enthusiastically demonstrated how to use the quilt pattern itself as a guide for quilting the quilt. Her method of “Designs with Lines” uses simple shapes for quilting blocks & borders.

Hot shredded Chicken 4 whole chicken breasts with skin removed, or a 3 lb bag of frozen, boneless skinless chicken breasts Cook chicken in a crock pot until you can shred it. Remove from crock pot and cool until you can easily handle. Remove from bone and shred. Mix together: 1 can Cream of Mushroom, 1 can Cream of Celery, 1 can Cream of Chicken. Once mixed, add to the shredded chicken. Season with garlic, chopped onion, pepper. Reheat for serving.
Themed 1st Place—Susan Body, Katherine's Quilt
Do not overcook the chicken prior to shredding or it will become "mushy" after you add the sauce and reheat. This freezes very well.

Janeen Pearson is sharing an update about Kaylee Wellik’s Project of Quilts for Newly Diagnosed Patients with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Kaylee Wellik, from Story City, was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis when she was 4 years old. Today at age 14 is making a difference in the lives of families with children diagnosed with arthritis. She wanted to make a quote “Welcome Kit” for families affected with arthritis (even though you do not want to have to be welcomed in the club.) This kit will include a book to keep track of doctor appointments, phone numbers, insurance information, etc.; a teddy bear, large crayons because they are easier on our fingers and a homemade quilt that the children can use as their security blanket. During the first 90 days of diagnosis she had 61 appointments with physical therapist, occupational therapist, doctors and other specialist. The book will help organize the world of these families affected. The quilts are for the many long car rides to the doctor’s offices and to hold during the many blood draws and shots that many
of these children must deal with. Her goal is to have 150 quilts by the end of 2009. She would appreciate any donations that you or your business may be able to provide for this worthwhile project. She is looking for fabric, thread, batting, labels, large crayons, three ring binders, sheet protectors for three ring binders and people’s time and talent to help make this project a reality. Kaylee reports “my family and I have made 1015 lap size quilts. You can see some of the quilts already done in my pictures. We are making them for boys and girls of all ages.” The quilts and other items will be distributed through the Iowa Arthritis Foundation in conjunction with the pediatric rheumatologists at the University of Iowa Hospitals.
Common Threads Quilt Shoppe submitted by Celeste M.
Common Threads Quilt Shoppe, North Liberty, IA For me, this was a shop full of good surprises. When I found Common Threads, I was surprised to find how close it was to Cedar Rapids. It was really easy to find and is in a nice building all on it's own. As I walked in, I noticed a sign about Patrick Lose. I assumed it was some kind of Patrick Lose club, but was surprised to find out there was more! On Aug. 16, the store is having a Farmer's Market and Patrick will be there signing his new book. On Aug. 17, there will be an all-day workshop with Patrick which includes an autographed coy of his new book. (You can call for details. At the time I wrote this -last week of July they had spots open.) They also have a "Party With Patrick club," where you buy a kit each month and share refreshments, etc. Sounds like fun! As you walk in you find a "cubby chest" (I call it) filled with small kits, notions, and free patterns! I
picked up several, you may see them in future newsletter issues! I was warmly greeted as I walked in by a really nice lady (unfortunately I didn't get her name) and she knew we had just had our quilt show and asked how it was. She was glad to tell me all about what was going on in the store. She pointed out the store owner (busy on the phone-I didn't make an appointment first) who said it was OK for me to share the free patterns. Peg Griffin-Wood is her name and she designs patterns and runs a long-arm business out of the shop as well. You can also "quilt-your-own" on their long-arm. You need to take the "Long-arm Basics Class" then you can rent time in 3-hour slots. They use a zipper system to attach quilts to the machine, so you can put quilts on and take them off easily. Another surprising touch were the inspirational quotes on the fabric shelves. I enjoyed reading them and looking for fabric at the same time! There were also kits I hadn't seen before...Princess, Queen & Jester hats, and fabric dying kits, just to name a couple. The store was bright and cheerful with lots of examples hanging up. It seemed like everywhere I looked I found another interesting item tucked away. Newsletters come out in January, May, and September. You can catch up on what's new, classes, special guests, etc. in these. As I was leaving I found more interesting surprises! Pre-made and quilted baby quilts! They looked to me like whole cloth quilts. I thought "What a great idea!" For when you want to make a quilt for a co-worker, for example, and don't have the time you can still give them a "real quilt!" I found this shop full of pleasant surprises...plus lots more I forgot to mention! I'd be sure to give this shop a try while you're out and about!
