Our design vision for each project is guided by the cultural, historical, and/or unique characteristics of each project. We recognize that flexible and adaptable design styles are key to creating outstanding and enduring projects. Combining our traditional principles of land stewardship with today’s sustainable practice rating systems (LEED, Build It Green, Bay Friendly Landscape Guidelines, etc.) we successfully achieve sustainable building goals and certifications. Our partnership-oriented team of professionals approaches all projects with a dedication to design and client satisfaction. Our project controls in project management, knowledge of current landscape construction costs, ability to prepare concise opinions of probable construction costs for budget allocation and value engineering are highly valued and relied upon by our Clients and appreciated by design teams. We generate clear, goal-focused communication. We effectively manage communication through comprehensive meeting agendas and goals, summary documentation and outreach during public workshops and through all stages of the project process to achieve consensus. SMITH+SMITH has successfully provided professional services in a wide range of project types, market segments, and project construction budgets. We have designed projects with landscape specific construction budgets as large as $25 Million, such as the Four Season Hualalai Resort in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, as well as small custom residential projects with landscape budgets of $100,000. SUSTAINABLE PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Since founding in 1981, SMITH+SMITH has planned and designed a number of memorable and enduring spaces that inspire people to interact with their surroundings. In the past 5 years, 75% of SMITH+SMITH projects have been designed for LEED Certification/ Compliancy or Green Points. However, the firm’s philosophy of sustainability began many years before the development of the USGBC movement and guidelines. For almost 30 years, SMITH+SMITH has applied principles of conservation and ecological awareness to their landscape design and services. As the President of SMITH+SMITH, Bill is responsible for strategic master planning, planning and landscape architectural design, emphasizing conceptual, schematic and design development phases. For more than 20 years, Marty has designed irrigation systems since 1982. He has acquired a vast knowledge of irrigation design and consulting principles and practical applications in his 27 years of experience. He has successfully completed over two thousand projects including parks, municipal/public facilities, schools, streetscapes, commercial developments, master planning, and centralized irrigation control system designs and feasibility studies. He is an industry leader in the design of state-of-the-art, LEEDoriented, water-conserving irrigation systems.

Cory has worked 4 years with SMITH+SMITH to support design and project management staff through all phases of the design process. CIVIC/ INSTITUTIONAL EXPEREINCE SANTA CLARA CRIME LAB SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA The Santa Clara Crime Lab is a 90,000 square foot highsecurity laboratory, which sits on a constrained urban site with secure parking, accessible parking, controlled public entrance, vehicle evidence bays and entrances, outdoor staff coffee area, and accessibility ramps. In addition to the Crime Lab, the project included site planning and landscape. Irrigation, and planting design for the adjoining area of the neighboring buildings, the Municipal Court Building and the Juvenile Detention Center. The Court area was redesigned to incorporate a side entrance, two outdoor staff coffee areas, and parking, while maintaining some of its preexisting landscape garden. The Juvenile Center’s parking was reconfigured with new trees added. Landscape features include street-facing alternating planting strips that pick up the building form, Asian-influenced plant color and material palette at the main entrance, LEED-rated irrigation system design. Landscape-related security features included major approach to public entrance oriented away from public traffic, strategically placed trees of reduced height and open canopy, perimeter plinth wall with nonseating surface, low profile ground planting, and a 12’ building perimeter maintenance strip rated for heavy equipment.

MILL VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES MILL VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

The Mill Valley Community Center facilities include a twostory community center building, school, a swimming pool, ball fields, and athletic facilities. The landscape architectural services for this joint use facility, a 25-acre site included designing multi-use recreational areas, with two baseball diamonds and soccer fields, six basketball courts, a roller hockey court, and social gathering areas integrated with an indoor/outdoor kid watch area. Additionally, SMITH+SMITH designed a playground for the Mill Valley Middle School located on the adjoining site. Other services included marsh and bay-front park enhancements/ nature walk. SMITH+SMITH provided landscape architectural design layout, grading and drainage of planting areas, pedestrian pavements design, planting and irrigation design, site furnishings, nonstructural landscape elements, including steps, and ramps.

CULTURAL/ HISTORIC EXPEREINCE AETNA SPRINGS PRESERVE NAPA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA The landscape design concept was a revitalization of the historic open, park-like Oak woodland setting, with the addition of designed planting areas to articulate and define semiprivate and private spaces that are adjacent to the existing and proposed structures. The intimate golf club house is sited on an Oak Woodland knoll. Historic site artifacts included fieldstone, edged terraces and walls, pedestrian promenades, and archways, the pool house and pedestrian bridges. Indigenous Oak trees were planted to reestablish the woodland and canopy to create mottled shade on the ground plane. SMITH+SMITH designed and graded the entry road to the clubhouse, which wound its way through the Oak grove.

MONADNOCK BUILDING COURTYARD SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA The Monadnock Building is one of San Francisco’s most prominent historic landmarks in the Renaissance/Baroque style architecture. SMITH+SMITH provide landscape design for the buildings over-structure courtyard, which features decorative granite paving, seat walls, an arbor with seasonal plants and dynamic sculptures.

SHINNYO-EN TEMPLE, REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA SMITH+SMITH provided landscape architectural services including planting and irrigation for courtyards, lawn area, patio and view garden.

CIVIC/ INSTITUTIONAL EXPEREINCE ALZA CORPORATION MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA The landscape architectural design included a new entry court and recreation facility. The goal was to make the site inviting and visually appealing, and at the same time provide controlled access to the buildings. The site plan created a hierarchy of outdoor spaces with an amphitheater, formal and informal gardens, and terraces filled with unique art sculptures. Portions of the site’s flat topography were sculpted and modeled to create intriguing spaces that foster relaxation and recreation in the corporate landscape.

WINDRIVER SYSTEMS, ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA Located on a 22-acre site along the Oakland-Alameda estuary, SMITH+SMITH developed land-use and master planning studies for a new company headquarters and a landscape design plan for a public park. Amenities included a shoreline trail and park with passive and active recreational areas that is open to the public. The park features include a cantilevered wharf with pedestrian walks, viewing courtyards, outdoor dining areas, and boating activities along a pier. The site design maximizes shoreline and Oakland Skyline views and waterside amenities. One of the special challenges of this project was meeting the Bay Area Conservation District Guidelines for wetlands design and irrigation mitigation.

HEWLETT PACKARD, CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA This 120-acre site features corporate facilities and two cafeterias for Hewlett-Packard’s Cupertino Campus. Two new three-story office buildings of 350,000 square feet include office space, light assembly space and marketing facilities. SMITH+SMITH provided landscape design and planning services for the office building, a parking lot and cafeteria amenities. Outdoor eating spaces were added to existing cafeteria facilities to create intimate meeting areas for employees to relax and converse. A fitness center and outdoor recreation facility with basketball courts and sand volleyball courts were also created.

HOTEL/ RESORT EXPEREINCE THE FOUR SEASONS HUALALAI KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII SMITH+SMITH provided master planning, site planning and landscape architectural design services for this luxury beach and golf resort on Hawaii’s south Kona-Kohala Coast. The landscape design incorporates native plant materials, indigenous lava walls, anchialine ponds and wetlands. Both, the architecture and the landscape reflect an indigenous Hawaiian theme.

SHUTTERS ON THE BEACH SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA Shutters Beach Front Hotel is a 200-room luxury oceanfront hotel located in Santa Monica. The design scheme recalls the colorful architecture characteristic of historic beach resorts and cottages on the Southern California Coast. Sited so that all guest rooms have ocean exposure, the front of the hotel opens onto a public promenade from which there is direct access to the area’s swimming beaches. SMITH+SMITH’s plans included elaborate sunning terraces, garden courtyards, a fountain, pedestrian walkways, a grand stairway entrance to the beach, and a new landscape plan for revitalizing an existing beach front park. One of the special challenges of this waterfront project was obtaining permits from both the City of Santa Monica and the California Coastal Commission. This hotel received the 1995 Golden Nugget Grand Award for Best Specialty Project.

RESIDENTIAL/SENIOR HOUSING PROJECT EXPERIENCE CECILIA PLACE SENIOR HOUSING TIBURON, CALIFORNIA A hillside of trees surrounds this 16-unit low-income residential development in Tiburon, CA. Clustered dwellings create a sheltered and secluded atmosphere while providing accessible accommodations for seniors. The main focus is on the central garden and lawns, seating areas and ornamental plantings that provide gathering places for residents.

SAN FRANCISCO TOWERS, ADULT CARE SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA The San Francisco Towers complex on Van Ness Avenue provides varying levels of health care for senior residents in seven separate buildings that range from nine to thirteen stories and cover a full city block. The complex contains 250 condominium/ apartments and a 40-bed facility offering skilled nursing and limited hospital care. The urban landscape design includes gardens at rooftop and street level as well as recreation and pool areas, interior lobbies and an exterior forecourt. SMITH+SMITH’s services included schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration.

DANVILLE SENIOR HOUSING DANVILLE, CALIFORNIA The inviting Sycamore Place is a housing complex for senior residents. The cluster of homes creates a sheltered and secluded atmosphere, while still being accessible fors seniors. ANCHORAGE AT MARINA BAY MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA This 11.4-acre, 270 town house residential community is located along the Marina shore in Richmond. The architectural site plan included design of the landscape open spaces and pedestrian walks.

HARBOR LOFTS SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Harbor Lofts is a renovation of an existing two-story 150-year old landmark warehouse located at 101 Harrison Street, near the Bay Bridge in San Francisco’s SOMA District. The project provides 42-live/work spaces that are organized around a new 4,500-s.f. common courtyard, creating an environment where artists and craftspeople can meet and exchange ideas, The landscape design includes a courtyard garden, private rear yards for ground-floor units, and street plantings. Durable plant materials reflect this project’s strong urban character, while the use of varied textures and year-round color creates the atmosphere of a private residential garden. RESIDENTIAL/AFFORDABLE PROJECT EXPERIENCE

MONTE VISTA FAMILY HOUSING MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA Monte Vista Apartments, a project developed by Bridge Housing, provides 300-affordable and market-rate apartments for families on a 16-acre site. The community features two and three-story buildings which are clustered around open space areas that provide open space recreation areas for children and adults. Additional amenities include a 2,000 square foot community pool and spa, a teen center, a children’s break out area and several sport courts. SMITH+SMITH’s landscape architectural services included schematic design through construction administration.

PARC METROPOLITAN MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA Parc Metropolitan Park, located in the City of Milpitas, is adjacent to The Great Mall of the Bay Area and is divided into 3 separate parcels, each approximately greater than an acre in size. Each park acts as a public open space accessible to all. Combined, Park West, Middle Park, and East Park contain both programmed and unprogrammed space which include; seating areas and play structures, water fountains, pedestrian pavements and lawns, raised planters, arbors, picnic tables and grilling areas, and public restrooms. Middle park is the most formal of all, with trees that guide the public to a manicured garden and recreational club house facility that is equipped with swimming pool, deck, and shade structures.

7TH AND KING STREET APARTMENTS SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA SMITH+SMITH provided landscape architectural services from entitlements through construction administration phases of work. This high-density urban project provides affordable and market rate apartments, located South of Market Street in San Francisco. The project was certified for occupancy in April 2008.

RETAIL/ MISED USE EXPEREINCE THE GREEN ON PARK PLACE DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA The Green is a 27-acre distinctive, contemporary, communityoriented destination servicing greater Dublin tri-valley area. SMITH+SMITH provided landscape architectural services to design a series of outdoor “rooms” and structures, arranged in a curvilinear fashion. Design elements like structures, seatwalls, overhead trellises, participation screens, and planted areas define spaces for visitors to linger and interact with the site.

PLAZA DE SAN JOSE SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA Located in the San Jose’s East Valley, this shopping center consists of 191,500 square feet of retail space. The Landscape Architectural plan included improvements to existing infrastructure, including pedestrian pavement and site planting.

TRANSPORTATION EXPEREINCE CONCORD PARKING GARAGE, CONCORD, CALIFORNIA SMITH+SMITH provided complete landscape architectural design services for the 432-stall parking structure in downtown Concord. The design elements included decorative, colored concrete paving at the drive entrances and street frontages, overhead arching trellis with flowering vines, benches, and lighting.

URBAN EXPERIENCE

JOHN GALLIVAN CENTER SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH The urban landscape architectural plan included design of open space over a parking structure. Open gardens were created for outdoor cafes and public art displays. The project covered two 10-acre blocks of Downtown Salt Lake City, and provided 1000 residential units, and over 1.5 million square feet of office and retail space.

CAPITAL AVENUE FREEMONT, CALIFORNIA The goal of the Landscape Architectural Plan for Capitol Avenue was to create aesthetically rich, pedestrian-oriented district, focused on the central plaza and surrounding esplanades.
