Hello Parents and Guardians: Esteem Services is all about empowering families to have more tools and resources to add to their developing and ever-changing family. Esteem designs programs and support services that are consistent and predictable yet evolving. We believe that programs need to change as children, youth, and families change within society. Our EsteemedCHICs.com and CHICs programming are built on the CHIC2 = Dream Believe Achieve model.

What does that mean? C = Challenging social perspectives (society, family, school) – Awareness Phase H = Honouring the uniqueness of Who You Are – Discovery Phase I = Increasing skills and strategies for increased self-esteem & self-worth – Action Phase C = Claiming healthy connection to self, family, & community – Implementation Phase BY Choosing Health and Integrating Changes = Dream Believe Achieve Each week-long CHICs camp uses this model and this model is also integrated into each workshop that we do. What does a typical workshop look like? Every workshop has a different theme, message and educational component focusing on mind, body, and spirit. Some of the topics over the course of a week-long camp include self-esteem, body-image, communication, negative/positive thinking, healthy eating and living. Example of CHICs2 model using the Esteemed CHICs with Vision workshop: C = Challenging  Group introduction and discussion about defining self-esteem  View and discuss 2 video clips that challenge thinking from a community and media perspective

H= Honouring  Vision Journal Activity –using magazines to discover what makes each girl unique, what inspires them, what motivates them. I = Increasing Skills and Tools  Group brain-storming and discuss about the effective uses of the Vision Journal C = Claiming  Angela discusses her two life rules and how girls can implement their own life rules. The overall goal is for girls to Choose Health and Integrate Changes into their life which allows them to Dream, Believe and Achieve anything they set out to do! Above all it is important to us that the CHICs environment is safe, fun, and inviting. At Esteem Services we believe that enhancing permanent changes in lives of children and youth includes family involvement and is reflected in our Coach Approach to Parenting Teens program. Therefore, we are proudly offering a Mother and Daughter CHICs Camp because we believe healthy habits start with healthy mothers and daughters. We are also excited to offer a ‘Transitioning to High School’ Camp for grade 7 boys and girls heading off to high-school in September of 2009. Transitioning to high-school is one of the most important transitions a child will make and there is little to no programming and support services that focus on this important life leap! When entering high-school a child’s world is expanded and so too are the influences. Social networks, the number of teachers, subjects, classrooms, and activities expand and social anxiety can be a huge. This camp prepares grade 7’s to enter high-school well informed and confident! We are excited about our programming in Nanaimo and Vernon for Spring/Summer 2009 and look forward to growing and evolving with the families we meet this year as we continue to build the best services for Empowering Families! Please feel free to contact us at 250-668-7454 or e-mail us at [email protected] for more information or ask us about bringing our workshops to your school or community organization. Respectfully,

Angela Slade, BA CYC - Founder, Esteem Services & www.esteemedchics.com
