Dear readers, fill your vessel, seek out a patch of shade, and settle in for a tale of how our little festival came to be… Once upon a time - 22 years to be precise - a man by the name of Arthur Larrance had a vision. Having toured the fabled beer halls of Munich’s Oktoberfest, Arthur asked himself, “Why couldn’t we create such a jubilee in our own hamlet?” Why not, indeed? Granted, Munich’s event had been in existence for more than 150 years, whereas on this side of the pond, microbreweries had been common for little more than a decade. But that did not deter our hero. Arthur, who had founded a microbrewery of his own (Portland Brewing Co.), approached his neighbors Kurt & Rob Widmer (Widmer Bros. Brewing Co.) and Dick & Nancy Ponzi (founders of BridgePort Brewing Co.) and decreed, “Let us make merry and hold a village-wide celebration!” Fortunately for us, Arthur’s consorts welcomed the idea, and a festive gathering was held in the summer of 1988 – a dark era, in which merely 124 microbreweries existed across the country. The storybook setting featured green grass, a towering mountain, and a lazy river. The sun shined on the first year, sweltering the villagers. There was a ruly mob, a flood of foam, and still the event was heralded a great success (insert trumpet fanfare here)! Do not fret, gentle reader, this is not the end of our story…it’s only the beginning! In this enlightened day and age, there are more than 1,400 craft breweries in the U.S. Our little fête has flourished, becoming one of the longest-running and bestloved craft beer festivals across the globe. Just as our protagonist envisioned, the Oregon Brewers Festival has become a colorful gathering place for friends near and far to come together in celebration each and every summer. It is our wish that you have enjoyed this fable, and our hope that you will join us for future chapters. Cheers! 2

Broadly Defined Beer Styles

both hops and roasted grains.

By Noel Blake

Strong ale is a catchall style category for beers from seven-percent alcohol by volume and above. Characteristics will greatly vary, with some sharing similarities with Barleywines and Old Ales. Barrel aging is certainly not out of the question.

Amber ale is a general term used to describe copper-colored ales or lagers, which are more fullbodied than golden ales, often with a medium maltiness and moderate to strong hoppy bitterness. Belgian ales are an entire universe of beer from the most diverse brewing tradition in the world. They are typically complex and harmoniously balanced. Bocks are somewhat strong lagers with a pronounced malt character. A maibock is pale in color and has a somewhat more prominent hop character than a dark, rich doppelbock. Brown ales are malty, with a coffee-like flavor and a pleasing nuttiness. They may also be somewhat sweet or hoppy. Cream ales are generally light colored and mild, lagered at cold temperatures or combined with a lager. ESB stands for Extra Special Bitter. These traditional English-style ales feature a well-balanced hoppiness and sweet maltiness. Fruit and Honey Beers are usually very light-bodied ales with fresh fruit or honey added. They should be delicate, and therefore low in hops. The fruit flavor should be fresh, vibrant, and easily identifiable. Honey adds subtle flowery undertones and a honey flavor. Fruit and honey ferment very well, so these beers should not be overly sweet, but may present some malt flavor and apparent sweetness due to low bitterness. Golden ales typically have an appearance similar to that of a Pilsner. Malt character is subdued and the hop profile ranges from spicy to citrus; common hop additions include Styrian Golding and Cascade. India Pale Ales, usually known as IPAs, were originally pale ales brewed extra strong and hoppy for shipment to the English colonies in India. American brewers are notorious hopheads, and they often use the IPA to show off their hopping prowess. IPAs should have a pronounced fruity or earthy hop aroma and flavor. A rich body from Pale malts, and sometimes Caramel malts, should be present as a foil for the hop flavor. They are often intensely bitter, and have a dry finish. Imperial IPAs are even stronger and hoppier. Kölsch is a pale, dry German ale that originated in the city of Cologne (Köln). This style is lightbodied and refreshing. Although not bitter, Kölsch may present flowery flavors from subtle use of German hops. The malt flavors are delicate and sometimes reminiscent of Chardonnay. Lagers are malty and light-bodied with predominant flavors of toast and caramel. Pale Ales are based on the English bitter style, and are often not all that pale. They may encompass a wide range of types such as Golden, Amber, Red, or ESB. Pale Ales are characterized by yeast varieties that give fruity aromas, and may be either mildly or well hopped. Hops are usually apparent in the aroma, flavor, and the bitterness. Darker versions have caramel flavors from dark malts, and are usually more hopped than golden ales. Pilsners are pale straw to deep gold in color. The traditional German and Czech styles represented at the festival are crisp lagers with a smooth malty flavor. They are often well hopped with floral and spicy European hops such as Hallertau and Saaz. However, the hops should not overwhelm the malt flavor. The finish is clean and often fairly bitter. Porters are complex, dark, strongly flavored ales that are said to take their name from the dockhands for whom they were originally brewed. Porters are similar to stouts but without the bitterness. Red ales are richly flavored, sweet, hoppy beers. They usually feature a reddish or orange color and a sweet malt flavor from the use of caramel malts, and a strong hop character often including grassy notes from dry-hopping. Stouts are dark brown to inky black ales that feature the rich flavors of roasted malts that include chocolate, coffee, toffee, and charcoal. They can be light-bodied such as draft Guinness, or rich and thick. Although hop flavor and aroma are low, they sometimes display a noticeable bitterness from 6

Wheat beers are either in the Bavarian or American style. Compared to a Belgian Wit, the use of malted wheat in a Bavarian Weizen gives a more pronounced bready wheat flavor, and they are not spiced. They may be filtered and clear (“kristall”) or unfiltered and hazy (“hefe”). The most remarkable aspect of these beers is the traditional yeast, which gives pronounced flavors of clove and banana. American interpretations may substitute hop flavors for the Bavarian yeast flavors. American wheat beers have a neutral yeast character that is often replaced by a gentle hop aroma. Wit is a wonderful summer wheat ale style from Belgium, sometimes referred to as a “white beer.” The use of unmalted wheat gives it a light body and a hazy, whitish color. These beers are usually spiced with coriander, with its characteristic grainy, citrus, and minty undertones, and orange peel, which gives a slightly bitter, tea-like palate. Other spices may be added, but hops are always very low.

Think About Your Drink Beer is made from water, yeast, malt and hops. Sounds simple enough. Yet there’s a lot to learn about beer: What exactly are hops? How do you brew beer? What is a Beer S.N.O.B.? At the Oregon Brewers Festival, industry members and fans of the industry come together to celebrate and honor the revered beverage, and share their knowledge with those thirsty to learn more. Visit these organizations at the Festival for a real beer education. Oregon Brewers Guild In the early 1990s several local brewers met informally to discuss common issues, problems and opportunities. In 1992, this group evolved into the Oregon Brewers Guild, a dynamic trade organization that represents all but a few of the state’s craft breweries. Its primary mission is to promote the common interests of the members and the brewing industry in Oregon by supporting the marketing and promotional efforts of Oregon’s breweries, and by educating beer enthusiasts about Oregon’s craft beers. The Guild is also very involved with legislative work. The Oregon Brewers Guild, which represents 64 of the 69 brewing companies in the state, maintains an interactive website where craft beer enthusiasts can find the latest news from their favorite Oregon breweries and stay up to date on events happening around the state. One of the Guild’s most popular programs is its S.N.O.B. (Supporter of Native Oregon Beer) membership. This program for the general public allows SNOB members to show off their impeccable taste in craft beverages and at the same time get a backstage pass to what’s going on behind the scenes in Oregon’s craft brewing industry. Annual membership dues are $24.20, which includes an official membership card, a T-shirt, a bumper sticker, an email newsletter, discounts on events, and invitations to regional gatherings. You can sign up online at www.oregonbeer.org/snob. During the Oregon Brewers Festival, membership is only $20 and you can sign up to be a S.N.O.B. at the Oregon Brewers Guild Booth. www.oregonbeer.org Cascade Breweriana Association In 1910, a brewer in Montana approached the American Can Company about canning beer, but it was not feasible at the time. In wasn’t until 25 years later that the beer can was introduced. The very first beer to ever sell in a can was Krueger’s Ale and Krueger’s Beer, sold in Richmond, Virginia in 1935. It was an immediate success. Later than year, Pabst became the first major brewer to can, with its Pabst “Export” Beer. There is a local club dedicated to the collecting and enjoying of beer memorabilia. Founded in 1977, the Cascade Breweriana Association is comprised of more than 200 members who collect a vast array of items. One member has 5,000 beer bottles while another has 4,000 beer cans. One specializes in pre7

prohibition brewery advertising, while others collect neons, signs, mirrors, crowns, steins, glasses, trays, coasters, and the like. At the festival, many of the CBA members will have their breweriana on display. www.cascadebeer.com Oregon Brew Crew Homebrewing is an easy hobby to get into, with minimal equipment required. Kits are available from many local homebrew shops, and easy to follow instructions let novices brew excellent beer. Whether you’re interested in re-creating an obscure beer style, want to experiment with herbal beers, or just want to make your own beer for less than the price of bottled beer, homebrewing is full of opportunities. The Oregon Brew Crew, the oldest homebrew club in Oregon, and with more than 150 members, one of the largest in North America, will be on-site at the festival offering homebrew displays. Founded in 1979, its members are brewers of all experience levels, from the extract brewer, just finishing his or her first batch, to brewers turned professional with successful microbreweries. The group’s monthly meetings, workshops and classes are great places to learn more about beer, brewing, judging and history. A not-forprofit organization, the Oregon Brew Crew donates beer books to local libraries, coordinates volunteers for numerous beer events in Portland such as the Oregon Brewers Festival, and supports the Bob McCracken Scholarship Fund for Oregon State University’s Fermentation Science students. www.oregonbrewcrew.com RideOn RideOn Portland is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that both you and your car get home safely after enjoying Portland’s nightlife. Pretty cool, huh? RideOn Portland has developed a progressive approach towards the prevention of drunk driving by driving individuals home in their own car. RideOn drivers are dispatched to the aid of intoxicated and/or impaired imbibers on Friday and Saturday nights between the hours of 11pm and 3am in an effort to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the street. Thanks to the help of its awesome sponsors, RideOn is able to provide you with this service for just $10 per ride. The cost of its service is intentionally affordable so that making a good decision will be an easy decision at the end of a night out. Not too shabby, eh? www.rideonportland.org Pints for Prostates Pints for Prostates, a campaign that uses the universal language of beer to encourage men to take charge of their health, was founded by prostate cancer survivor Rick Lyke in 2008. The grassroots effort raises awareness among men of the importance of regular health screenings and PSA testing by making appearances at beer festivals, social networking and pro bono advertising. All funds generated by Pints for Prostates benefit the Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network, a 501(c)3 charity that works to support, educate and advocate for men with prostate cancer and their families. www.ustoo.org/pints Beer Media Many of the industry’s elite media come out for the Oregon Brewers Festival. You can meet some of them here, and purchase books, subscriptions, and more. What’s the Buzz at the OBF? Find out at the Buzz Tent! Each July, brewers from around the country send one single product to be poured at the Oregon Brewers Festival. Every year, a few of these beers generate buzz and become the must-try beers of the event. This year, we’ve switched it up by asking the brewers to create not only the beer, but the buzz as well. We’ve solicited a collection of beers from our participating brewers to feature in our new Buzz Tent. These beers run the gambit from old favorites to new creations, experimental beers to those well off the beaten path. They’ve come to us in 1/6 barrels, _ barrels, half-kegs, firkins and bottles. These beers are highly prized, very expensive, and our selection is very limited in quantity. Many of the brewers of these beers will be on hand in the tent to talk up their product. The Buzz Tent will be open on Friday, July 24 and Saturday, July 25 from Noon to 4:30 pm each day. Admission is separate from the festival. A ticket costs $20 and includes a punch card good for eight four-ounce tastes. The ticket will give you tastes of six different buzz beers, plus two tastings of your choosing. Because of the different quantities of product on hand, we can’t guarantee what beers will be pouring at any single time, but we can guarantee they will be fantastic! Look for the chalkboard outside the tent, or follow the Buzz Tent on Twitter: @OBFBuzzTent. We will be selling a total of 2,000 tickets to the Buzz Tent: 1,000 per day. The tickets are first come, first serve. Tickets can be purchased on site starting Thursday, July 23 in the “Tokens Only” lines on the south end of the mugs/tokens tent. You must purchase a Friday and/or a Saturday ticket. The Buzz Tent itself is located in between the Mug/Tokens Sales and the South Beer Trailers. Admission to the Buzz Tent does not include a mug. Just use the mug you are using to sample all of the other beers at the festival. To whet your whistle, here’s a sample of what will be pouring in the Buzz Tent this weekend: Alameda Horseshoe Hefeweizen, Alaskan Barley Wine Anderson Valley Huge’r Boont, Ballast Point Sour Wench Tart Blackberry Ale #1, Beer Valley Black Flag Imperial Stout 2008 Fresh Hop edition, Blue Frog Barrel Aged Strong Amber Peligroso, BridgePort 2008 Stumptown Tart in firkin, BridgePort BBL Ebenezer, Cascade Brewing Sang Royale, Cascade Brewing Gold Yeller, Cascade Brewing Night Fall, Cascade Brewing Gose, Cascade Brewing Mouton Rouge, Deschutes Bourbon Quad, Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron, Fearless Strong Scotch, Fifty Fifty Imperial Eclipse Stout (barrel aged for 180 days in Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Barrels), Firestone Walker Double/Imperial Union Jack, Full Sail 1998 Old Boilermaker Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine, Grand Teton Brewing Howling Wolf Weizenbock, Laurelwood Organic Deranger Imperial Red, Laht Neppur Spiced Waitsburg Winter Warmer, Lazy Boy Pomegranate Belgian Golden Ale, Lompoc Barrel Fermented LSD, McMenamins West Linn Largo Laws Treasure Strong Scottish, McMenamins Crystal Ballroom Obama Nation Domestic Schwarzbier, McMenamins Old St. Francis Base Camp Coffee Stout, McMenamins Oak Hills Das Schwertz Maibock (Whiskey Barrel Aged), Moylan’s Brewing Co. 10 Barrel Brewing Co Bend, OR www.10barrel.com 541-585-1007

Alaskan Brewing Co Juneau, AK www.alaskanbeer.com 907-780-5866

This is an easy-drinking Golden Ale, made with a blend of Cascade and Sterling hops. Bend’s soft water keeps the flavor smooth and the hop bite low. English-style yeast adds a nutty flavor.

Light and delicate but complex, this beer’s soft, slightly sweet base is accented with a unique spice aroma of coriander and the crisp, citrus finish of orange peel. Made in the style of a Belgian Witbier, unfiltered suspended proteins create its cloudy appearance.

Get this beer while you can. 10 Barrel Brewing’s ales are available only on draft in Bend-area pubs, and at the OBF. Created and staffed by five locals and an outsider (who was meant to be a Bend brewer but was simply born in the wrong town), its other brews include Code 24 Pale Ale, S1NISTOR Black Ale, and the namesake 10 Barrel IPA.

Established in Juneau, Alaska in 1986, Alaskan Brewing Co. founders discovered historical documents describing the ingredients for a particularly popular beer at the turn of the 20th Century. That beer became Alaskan Amber, still its most popular product. We also recommend its smoked porter, a beer that can be aged for years or enjoyed fresh.

21st Amendment Brewery San Francisco, CA www.21st-Amendment.com 415-369-0900

Amnesia Brewing Portland, OR 503-281-7708

One of the most popular beers at the OBF for several years, this wheat beer is flavored with real watermelon during its secondary fermentation, giving the beer a subtle aroma and a dry, tart flavor. Low hopping levels let the unique taste of wheat and watermelon shine through. Draft Magazine recently named this beer its top summer fruit beer!

Golden Promise malt from England gives this session beer a true British character. Belgian Castle Pils malt and Wisconsin Carapils round out this international beer’s malt profile. A Northwest hop (Cascades) bitters the brew, then it’s back to England for East Kent Goldings in the finish and to dry hop. Moderate alcohol means this is one beer you can return to.

The 21st Amendment Brewery celebrates the right to brew beer, the freedom to be innovative, and the obligation to have fun. And now, the ability to quaff great craft beer out of a can with its Hell or High Watermelon Wheat and Live Free or Die IPA. The brewers claim the can is better for the beer and easier to produce, transport and recycle.

Amnesia Brewing sports a mellow vibe on N. Mississippi Ave. An outdoor dogfriendly biergarten and airy interior all connect intimately with an open look brewhouse. Enjoy grilled burgers and dogs - meat or veggie - as you surf using the free wi-fi on the strip. There is always a full range of hand-crafted beers on tap, including at least two IPAs that are simply unforgettable.

Alameda Brewing Co Portland, OR www.alamedabrewhouse.com 503-460-9025

Anderson Valley Brewing Co Boonville, CA www.avbc.com 707-895-2337

El Torero is a Northwest IPA made from all organic grain. It is bursting with hops from the big floral aroma to the deep, lingering bitterness. Balancing out the hops is a malt bill with generous amounts of Crystal, Munich, and wheat malts, plus an alcohol content just over 7%. This is an organic beer with big flavors that combine in a complex, satisfying brew.

This copper colored ale bids you welcome to the Summer Solstice. It’s smooth, malty, and lightly sweet, with a delicate hint of spice for a drinkable, extra velvety flavor. The character is lighter in body than its cousin, Winter Solstice. This silky, creamy dream is an ideal warm weather beer.

Located in the heart of Beaumont Village in Northeast Portland, Alameda Brewhouse has been offering hand crafted ales and freshly prepared food for 13 years. Its seven-barrel brewery produced nearly 1,000 barrels in 2008. Enjoy its Klickitat Pale, GABF-Gold winner Black Bear Stout, and El Torero IPA in some 150 places around Portland, or try them all at the pub.

AVBC is located in historic Boonville in the idyllic Anderson Valley of Northern California. The local dialect, called “Boontling,” dates from the logging days of this redwood-studded valley. AVBC has won numerous awards for its quality beers.

Astoria Brewing Co Astoria, OR www.wetdogcafe.com 503-325-6975

Bear Republic Brewing Co Cloverdale, CA www.bearrepublic.com 707-894-2722

Gobs of Centennial, Amarillo, Summit and Cascade hops find precious little interference from pale and light caramel malts in their path to your palate. A clean American ale yeast and an extra dose of hops in the barrel earned this beer the People’s Choice Award at the Spring Beer and Wine Festival three years running.

This copper-colored beer is a blend of Bear Republic’s Racer 5 and Red Rocket. Fermented with a Belgian yeast strain, Crazy Ivan has a spicy clove aroma. The American hop bitterness and aroma balance the Belgian character. It is named for the crazy left turn the brewers took while devising, brewing and trying to name the beer.

Astoria Brewing, founded in 1997 inside the Wet Dog Cafê, offers seven diverse house ales ranging from DaBomb Blonde Pale Ale to Kick Ass Oatmeal Stout. Astoria expanded its capacity with two eight-barrel fermenters, and keeps it sustainable by using solar-heated water.

Sitting in the middle of the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, you might wonder how a brewery in the heart of California’s wine country could make such distinctively flavorful beers. Bear Republic features big beers in bottles plus pub beer on draft to go along with the pub’s fresh, vibrant cuisine that leans towards the Italian.

Beer Valley Brewing Co Ontario, OR www.beervalleybrewing.com 541-881-9088

Hops, hops, hops. Hops are added into this beer at every opportunity: first-wort, boiling, finishing, and dry-hopping, a mix of Simcoe, Amarillo, Centennial and Galena. This San-Diego style IPA won a Bronze at the 2002 World Beer Cup.

Bunches of hops on top of a simple grain bill of two-row and Munich malts push this Imperial IPA over the stratosphere for hop flavor and bitterness. There’s enough residual sweetness and malt flavor to balance, although with the high alcohol, you may not notice - or care.

Ballast Point started as a homebrew shop in 1992, added a brewery in 1996, a new production facility in 2005 and topped 10,000 barrels of production in 2008. You can even find its beer in Japan. The brewery is also the first licensed distiller in San Diego - look for products to hit shelves sometime this summer.

Beer Valley Brewing Co. is an award-winning microbrewery located in the eastern Oregon town of Ontario. Founded in 2005 by Pete Ricks, it specializes in the production of strong ales - five year-round brews and occasional seasonals, available in seven western states and Pennsylvania.

DragonÆs Breath Dark Heff is mild in taste, unfiltered, and 5.6 % alcohol by volume. It is moderately hopped with BavariaÆs preeminent Hallertauer Perle hops and is cold-fermented, eliminating any harsh aftertaste. Dragon Breath Dark Heff received the Silver Medal at the North American Brewers Association 2008 Beer Awards.

This richly-textured, roasty dry stout gets a boost of bitterness and charisma from the addition of cocoa powder in the mash, lending the flavor - but not the sweetness - of chocolate. Bison blends five unique organic malts along with Magnum, Cascade and Perle hops to create a stout that has won multiple awards, including the Silver at the Great American Beer Festival.

One of the longest-running participants in the OBF, Bayern Brewing was founded in 1987 by Jêrgen Kn÷ller, a German-trained master brewer. Jêrgen brews all his beer according to the German Reinheitsgebot beer purity law of 1516. Bayern Beer is now available locally in bottles and 5-liter pony kegs.

Established in 1989, this brewery went all organic in 2002 because of its belief that sustainable and ecologically sound food production is the best way to protect the environment, save energy, ensure sustainability - and brew great beers. Its Farmhouse Ale’s gold medal at the 2006 GABF proves the point. Bison has won numerous other awards, including a Silver medal for the Chocolate Stout.

Blue Frog Grog & Grill Fairfield, CA www.bigbluefrog.com 707-429-2337 This blonde won’t break your heart, and that color’s not from peroxide. Canadian 2-Row and Cara-Helles malts and some flaked oats give this beer its malty character and, of course, great body. The judges seem to agree, as they gave this beer first place honors in the 2007 West Coast Brew Fest for the Pale Ale category. The secret to the great taste of Blue Frog ales, say the brewers, is lots of great music and just enough Led Zeppelin to keep the yeast happy and active. Founded in 1999, the brewery gets its name from the Peter, Paul and Mary song, “I’m in love with a Big Blue Frog.” You’ll fall in love with the beers, the pub and the pizzas, if you’re not careful.

Boulder Beer Co Boulder, CO www.boulderbeer.com 303-444-8448 Five - yes, five - hop additions, from first-wort to whirlpool, put the “India” in this Brown Ale. Brown, Honey and Biscuit malts combine with a fruity American ale yeast to yield a complex flavor and deep brown color. Brewed for the festival to celebrate Boulder’s 30th anniversary, it’s the ninth in the brewery’s Looking Glass series of specialty beers. The Boulder Beer Co. was established in 1979, which makes it Colorado’s first microbrewery and also one of the first in the nation. The Looking Glass series is the brewery’s leading edge line of innovative specialty brews and includes other favorites such as MoJo India Pale Ale and Sweaty Betty Blonde.

Boulevard Brewing Co Kansas City, MO www.boulevard.com 816-474-7095 A simple beer from a technical standpoint, what makes this unique is the blend of a Belgian yeast and citrusy Amarillo hops on a grain bed of pale malt, malted and unmalted wheat and corn flakes. Yes, corn flakes. And with that milky white head, you could call it breakfast. Named for the famously “recalcitrant” fermentation tank in which it came to life. Founded in 1989, Boulevard Brewing Co. has grown to become the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest. The brewery, built in a turn-of-thecentury brick building on Kansas CityÆs historic Southwest Boulevard, produces six year-round brews, four seasonals, and a line of artisinal beers - the Smokestack Series.

Cascade Brewing at the Raccoon Lodge Portland, OR www.raclodge.com 503-296-0110

Made especially for the OBF, this beer makes exclusive use of Amarillo hops in four additions, including two dry-hoppings. A simple grain bill of premium 2-Row and Munich malts provide the perfect body to balance the medium alpha (bitter) hop with a strong citrus flavor and aroma.

Put on your rose-colored beer goggles: this brew really is pretty in pink. Whole raspberries added to a sour mash Berlin-style wheat beer create a berry splash in this extremely refreshing beer. The raspberry is apparent on the nose, while the palate is tart and lemony with a hint of wheat. This is one of the most quenching brews at the festival.

Boundary Bay’s 17-barrel brewery opened 14 years ago in a restored historic 1922 warehouse in downtown Bellingham, across from the Saturday Market. Customers of the Taproom and Bistro can enjoy 10 fine ales and lagers and full-service smoke-free family-friendly dining. Its beers have won numerous awards from the GABF, World Beer Cup and North American Beer Awards.

Cascade Brewing is located inside the Raccoon Lodge & Brew Pub in SW Portland. Under the direction of Brewmaster Ron Gansberg, the brewery has pioneered the Northwest Sour Style, winning accolades and awards for its oak barrel aged, lactic-fermented bottled sour beers, which complement the well-balanced beers on draft year-round.

If you’re looking for a break from all the hops, this might be the place to start. A full ton of Oregon sour cherries added after primary fermentation imparts a fresh cherry flavor and a naturally tart finish. The Belgian Trappist yeast produces classic fruit and spice esters. The beer is then aged in French oak wine casks for six months. Complex? Ja, mein herr!

Brewed to be a light bodied, refreshing ale, Blonde Bombshell combines subtle malt and wheat flavors with a delicate Liberty hop aroma to create aà well, a knock-out with great body, of course. Originally brewed as a seasonal, this beer was so popular it pushed its way into the regular lineup - and earned a Bronze Medal at the 2008 GABF.

BridgePort has never missed an Oregon Brewers Festival. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary as Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, it is perhaps most famous for its award-winning IPA. The brewpub in NW Portland offers a full menu and several beers made in a traditional British style such as Black Strap Stout, Ropewalk Amber, Blue Heron Pale Ale, along with ESB and porter.

Located in Redmond, Cascade Lakes brews six year-round and nine rotating seasonals, from Pilsner to Bock and IPA to Porter. In summer, look for its thirst-quenching Kolsch, Weiss, and German style Pilsner. Or visit its 6,000-foot lodge featuring a full bar, pool tables, bristle-board dart boards, daily lunch and dinner specials, and of course, the beer.

Hibiscus flowers and ginger give this unique beer a zesty, spicy flavor. Belgian candi sugar boost the fermentables provided by 2-Row and Carafoam malts. Ginger and hibiscus are boiled with the wort, along with a small amount of Willamette hops. The beer is “dry-flowered” with hibiscus. It was brewed special for the OBF, so get it before it’s gone.

Slightly darker than a Pilsner, Dortmunder is a burnished honey gold, edging toward amber. It steers away from the bold hop bitterness and aroma of Pilsner, preferring a firm maltiness, a full-bodied, slightly sweet palate, and a clean, dry finish.

Caldera’s 10-barrel brewing system sits in a 6,000 square foot building in Ashland. Draft-only until 2005, Caldera then became the first Oregon brewery to distribute its beers in cans. Seven year-round brews include a Pilsner, Pale, IPA, Porter, Amber, Dry Hop Red and Dry Hop Orange.

Chuckanut Brewery has one of the most technologically sophisticated small breweries in the US, if not the world. Brewmaster Will Kemper has brewed for Thomas Kemper, Norwester, Aviator Ales of Seattle and Sierra Madre in Monterrey, Mexico, among others. He even started the first brewpub in Turkey.

Collaborator Portland, OR www.widmer.com 503-281-2437

Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom Hood River, OR www.doublemountainbrewery.com 541-387-0042

Designed by homebrewers Bill Schneller and Chris Johnson, Saison Christophe is brewed with malted barley, malted wheat, and unmalted oats. A fairly hefty dose of candi sugar boosts the alcohol, lightens the body and gives it an authentic dryness you won’t find in many American-produced Saisons. Orange peel and coriander lend an orange/lemon citrus note, blending with the underlying spice and pepper notes from the Dupont yeast.

The IRA, as itÆs known, marries a ruby red color and rich body with the hop flavors of an IPA. A unique ale yeast strain adds a delicious layer of complexity. One of the first beers made by the brewery, this is an enduring favorite brewed with Gambrinus Organic Pilsner malt, imported Crystal malt, and Simcoe and Brewers Gold hops.

Collaborator is one of the oldest collaborations in the nation between a craft brewer (Widmer Brothers) and homebrewers (the Oregon Brew Crew). Homebrewers design the beers and compete to win the opportunity to have their beer made and distributed by a world-class micro-brewery. Want to be famous? Fire up your brew kettle!

Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom opened on St PatrickÆs Day 2007. It’s billed as a “brewers’ brewery” with an uncompromising focus on beer quality. All beers are served up unfiltered and long-aged, to deliver maximum flavor and character. It features Gambrinus organic malts in nearly every brew, and the soft water from the local Hood River district is exceptionally pure and clean-tasting.

Eel River Brewing Scotia, CA www.eelriverbrewing.com 707-764-1772

Spelt Malt, a sort of “heirloom wheat” once abundant from the Bronze Age to medieval times, is now grown in very limited areas of Europe. ItÆs favored by organic farmers due to a low demand for fertilizers. Spelt gives beer a nutty flavor, which blend nicely with the big esters and clove nuances produced by the yeast used for fermentation.

If you need a pick-me-up, try this one. Brazilian acai berries bring energy as well as a unique flavor to this light golden ale. Brewed “behind the Redwood Curtain” from 2-Row and wheat malts and a gentle dose of Pacific Gem hops, four other organic berries round out this light-bodied beer’s fruit flavor.

Located in beautiful Bend, Deschutes Brewery overlooks the wild and scenic Deschutes River. It also brews an impressive collection of award-winning craft beers. Starting as a local brew pub in downtown Bend in 1988, Deschutes Brewery now sells beer across the western U.S. and recently opened a second public house in Portland, OregonÆs Pearl District.

Eel River is America’s first certified organic brewery. Located in a former old growth redwood mill just down the road from its Humboldt County brewpub, the facility is powered completely by renewable, bio-mass energy. Eel River has been brewing organic beers since 1995.

Get this: a neo-Berliner Weisse fermented with honest-to-goodness peaches to a mere 4.5% ABV. Fermented with an ale yeast, Berliner Weisse is also fermented with lactic cultures to produce its acidic or green apple-like character. Pale straw in color, it’s delicately hopped and served as an aperitif or summertime quencher.

Originally brewed for Sub Pop Records 20th Anniversary, this beer’s unique flavor comes from the high-alpha Sorachi Ace hop, a Japanese hybrid grown in small quantities in the Yakima Valley. Pure Cascade mountain runoff water extracts winning flavors from a grain bill of Pale, Munich, Crystal and Cara-hell malts.

Dogfish Head, Delaware’s first brewpub, produces “off-centered ales for off-centered people,” such as its 120-minute IPA, Punkin Ale or Raison d’Etre. Its original brewery, founded in 1995, produced only 12-gallon batches; in 1999, it relocated into a 100,000-foot former cannery, now producing 20 styles of beer sold in 25 states.

Three-time GABF Large Brewpub of the Year winner Elysian Brewing, founded in 1996, now brews 20 beers at a time in its three Seattle locations. In addition to producing classic examples of the great beer styles, the brewers also love to experiment with ingredients such as Jasmine flowers, peppercorns, pumpkins and spices.

Fish Brewing Co Olympia, WA www.fishbrewing.com 360-943-6480

As part of Fearless’ research to create this beer, two local homebrew clubs submitted 26 different examples of the style to inspire the brewer. The result is a very light, crisp, thirst-quenching ale with all the premium aspects of a Northwest craft beer. The secret ingredient is love - can you taste it?

Remarkably bright with a crisp hop finish, Fish Tale Organic Pale Ale is a beautifully balanced jewel of brewing. Its four organic malts impart a mellow sweetness amply matched by Yakima Cascade hops. Pale ale enthusiasts will treasure this ale as much as they love Cascadia, the beautiful land that inspired it.

When Portland homebrewer Ken Johnson decided to go pro, he set up shop in bucolic Estacada, on the scenic upper reaches of the Clackamas River. He serves up excellent pub standards plus rotating seasonal taps along with tasty pub fare in this down-home brewpub that’s a kayaker’s dream after a day on the rapids. Come try one of the six standard beers or one of many seasonals.

Nestled in the lush bosom of the Republic of Cascadia, the Fish Tale Brewery has been home to celebrated ales since 1993. Brewed in the great Cascadian tradition, Fish Tale Organic Ales spring purely from Certified Organic malted barley and the finest hops available. The 40-barrel brewhouse produces five year-round organic ales and two seasonals.

Fifty Fifty Brewing Co Truckee, CA www.fiftyfiftybrewing.com 530-587-2337

Flying Fish Brewing Co Cherry Hill, NJ www.flyingfish.com 856-489-0061

Six different malts including Honey and Red Wheat are accented with four hop additions, including one at whirlpool for a crisp, hoppy finish. The London ale yeast strain leaves a clean, slight malt sweetness behind for balance. One of Fifty-Fifty’s flagship beers, this batch was unfiltered specially for the OBF.

Winner of the 2008 Silver Medal at the GABF, this classic-style Dubbel is an exceptionally complex beer with many interwoven flavors. It features an immense head with a fruity nose and generous body. Malty in the middle, it has a clean, almondy dry finish and a slight alcohol warmth. It might remind you of a fine burgundy.

Fifty Fifty opened just two years ago, but brewer Todd Asman boasts numerous GABF and World Beer Cup medals for his classic brews. Look for a Pale Ale, IPA, Porter, Wit and Tripel - some aged in Jack Daniels barrels. Enjoy them with a burger or a nice seared Ahi at the pub and rock to music from the 60’s, 80’s - or punk, if that suits your mood.

Flying Fish Brewing Co. was the world’s first virtual microbrewery. Now located seven miles east of Philadelphia, it was the first new brewery built in Southern New Jersey in more than half a century. From its opening in late 1996, Flying Fish has quadrupled its capacity and has become New Jersey’s largest craft brewery, with four full-time and a variety of seasonal brews.

Full Sail Brewing Co Hood River, OR www.fullsailbrewing.com 541-386-2247

The newest member of the Firestone family, Union Jack is an aggressive IPA with more than 70 IBUs and plenty of alcohol. Citrus, pineapple and a full chewy malt profile finish clean on your palate, thanks to the Warrior, Simcoe, Cascade, Centennial and Amarillo hops. Union Jack won silver at the 2008 World Beer Cup and gold at the 2008 GABF.

Brand new for 2009, this crisp, new Pilsner-style lager is pale-golden in color and features a spicy floral hops aroma, malty medium body, and a smooth, thirst-quenching finish. Mt Hood spring water, two doses of Sterling hops, all 2-Row pale malt and Full Sail’s house lager yeast just want to rock your tastebuds’ little world.

Firestone WalkerÆs ales are selectively fermented in the patented Firestone Union oak barrel brewing system. Sixty gallons of the 200-barrel brew ferment for a week in medium-toast American oak barrels. This improves the fullness of the palate, lends a clean briskness to the finish, and imparts unique hints of smokiness and vanilla, as well as a subtle fruitiness to the flavor profile.

Independent, employee-owned Full Sail has been making great beer since 1987. Perched on a bluff in Hood River, OR, “the adrenaline capital of the Northwest,” Full Sail ferments godlike nectar as big as the scenery in the Columbia River Gorge. Golden Valley Brewery McMinnville, OR www.goldenvalleybrewery.com 503-472-BREW

Great Northern Brewing Co Whitefish, MT www.greatnorthernbrewing.com 406-863-1000

Golden in color with a zesty bitterness and full aromatics in the finish, Bald Peak IPA is brewed using Nuggets and Cascade hops exclusively from Colman Brothers Hop Farm just outside of St. Paul, Oregon.

This award-winning brew is a hybrid between an American Wheat beer and a premium lager. Pilsner, Pale, Wheat and Munich malts provide the malty flavor and body, complemented by a light hopping with Cascade and Aurora hops. Fermented at a relatively cool 50 degrees with Munich lager yeast, it is lagered three weeks for a clean, crisp flavor and finish.

Under brewmaster Mark Vickery, Golden Valley produces small batches of well-balanced, complex craft beer, including a brut IPA in champagne bottles and the wonderful Tannen Bomb winter warmer. The restaurant features high ceilings, a full bar and fine food, featuring its own Angus Springs beef fed with spent grain from the brewery.

Great Northern’s “gravity flow” brewery was designed by worldrenowned architect Joe Escherick. Highly automated, it is one of the most sophisticated and complex for its size in the country. Built in 1994 as the home of Black Star Lager, the brewery now produces a dozen ales and lagers in a variety of year-round and seasonal styles.

Grand Teton Brewing Co Victory, ID www.grandtetonbrewing.com 208-787-9000

Green Flash Brewing Co Vista, CA www.greenflashbrew.com 760-597-9012

Grand Teton’s flagship brew is mahogany-colored, complex and balanced, letting both the hops (Galena, Chinook and Centennial) and malt (Idaho Pale, German CaraHell, Cara Aroma, Cara Munich and Melanoidin) come through. Four GABF medals, including two golds, and four North American Beer Awards in the last five years prove that Bitch Creek is not just a pretty name.

This Imperial IPA is created in the new tradition of the San Diego-style IPA: super-hoppy, high gravity, yet highly quaffable ale. Intense hop flavors and aromas from a unique blend of Summit and Nugget hops get just enough support from 2-Row, Carapils and Carastan. Dry-hopping accentuates the hop aromas and flavor.

Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, Grand Teton Brewing of Jackson Hole was the first modern microbrewery in Wyoming. Now one of the top 100 craft breweries in North America, other favorites include Old Faithful Ale, Teton Ale, Workhorse Wheat and Sweetgrass IPA. A green company, the brewery runs on bio-diesel, and Grand Teton donates 5% of its production to environmental and community-friendly charities.

Located in Vista, CA, Green Flash was founded in 2002 and now brews nine styles of beer regularly on draft and in bottles, plus seasonal and barrel-aged beers. Prize credentials include five GABF medals, three World Beer Cup medals, a Best in Show at the California State Fair and another at the San Diego International Beer Festival.

Hazel Dell Brewpub Vancouver, WA 360-576-0996

Titan is brewed for disciples of gigantic hopping. Piney hop aromas and citrus hop flavors lead the way, reminiscent of grapefruit and orange zest. Its bracing finish balances a generous malt sweetness with crisp minerally bitterness.

Hazel Dell IPA is brewed with 2-Row Pale, Caramel, Munich and Wheat malts and an English-style yeast. Over the top of that firm malt base, four different hops - Galena, Tettnang, Rainier and Cascade - give it a bracing hop flavor with medium bitterness.

Assertive, flavorful and balanced is how Great Divide describes its beers. From session beers to big brews, its lineup offers a beer to please everyone. Maybe that’s why its beers have won numerous awards, including nine GABF and four World Beer Cup medals.

Established in Vancouver, WA in 1993, Hazel Dell patrons can view the seven-barrel system behind huge glass panes while enjoying great pub grub like burgers and tasty fish and chips. The serving tanks are right behind the bar, keeping the pub’s 10 tap lines short and the beer fresh. Try the Captain Vancouver’s Stout, Steinweizen or one of its nitro mix varieties.

Copious amounts of Cascade and Centennial added during and after the boil and whole flower Oregon-grown Cascades in the hop back give Rise Up Red its rich hop flavor. Organic malts keep it clean and green and give it that deep red color. This one will sustain you as it sustains the planet.

Neddy’s Brown Nut has a light roasted malt flavor with a lingering nutty finish, great for a summer evening around a fire pit or at a backyard barbecue. Great Western Premium 2-Row, Crystal, Carafa and Chocolate malts give the beer its body and deep color. A light touch with East Kent Golding and Centennial hops lets the roasty malt flavor come through.

The 20-barrel brewery produces 3,000-barrels a year and provides the restaurant with ten different HUB organic beers on tap and two cask ales at all times.

A relative newcomer to the Northwest craft beer scene, Laht Neppur was founded just over three years ago but already its 3.5-barrel brewing platform keeps eight to 10 regular beers on tap. The brewery also makes its own root beer; the floats alone make this trip off the beaten path worthwhile, but in case you need more, Laht Neppur also makes its own Cabernet Sauvignon and a port-style Syrah.

Kona Brewing Co Kailua Kona, HI www.konabrewingco.com 808-334-1133

Laughing Dog Brewing Ponderay, ID www.laughingdogbrewing.com 208-263-9222

Toasted coconut adds a sweet, nutty flavor to this dark, moderately hopped ale. Chocolate, Carapils, Munich and Victory malts add color, body and roasty flavor to the base 2-Row malt. Warrior, Millennium, Cascade, Willamette and Mt Hood hops put the Northwest into this tropical taste treat. Think Stumptown, drink Aloha!

If you’re looking for hop punch, you’ve found it. Simcoe, Columbus and Mt Hood hops flow with abundance into this brew kettle - the beer was then dry-hopped with Columbus and Mt Hood. Gambrinus Pale, Honey and Light Munich malts provide the fermentables, and the American ale yeast renders a very crisp finish. Gold Medal winner, Leavenworth Ale Festival.

Located in picturesque Kailua-Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island, Kona is Hawaii’s largest craft brewery. Its 10,000-barrel annual production covers a full spectrum of styles, flavors, and colors, from the darkest - Da Grind Buzz Kona Coffee Imperial Stout - to the Wailua Wheat. Oregonians Cameron Healy and Spoon Khalsa opened this brewery in 1994.

Founded only four years ago, Laughing Dog has grown to distribute beer in four western and eight eastern states. One of only two packaging breweries in Idaho, its five regular brews include the award-winning Cream Ale and “CSB,” an ESB for the dog in all of us.

This New DogTown Pale Ale is not the same old pale ale brewed in the little town of Lagunitas back in 1993. It is way better. The brewers have updated the old girl and the combination of a dry finish with the 21st century hop varieties make her new again!

Double Oregon Hefeweizen (DOH!) is not your brother’s hefeweizen. This version of Oregon’s most-brewed beer was designed around the tastes of the Oregon beer lover: loads of malted wheat and barley for a big, cloudy brew, strong but easy drinking with a fruity flavor.

The brewery with a sense of humor and no sense of when to stop adding hops brings you New Dogtown Pale Ale, among the doggiest beers at the festival. New Dogtown joins the Hop Stoopid, Hairy Eyeball, Maximus, Brown Shugga and Immortal IPA in a long line of Lagunitas classics.

Laurelwood is known for exquisite award-winning, certified organic pub beers in Portland’s Hollywood district and on NW 23rd. It’s garnered lots of awards- including Champion Brewery at the 2004 World Beer Cup. Its five family-friendly locations - including two at PDX - also serve up some killer grub.

Lucky Labrador Brewing Co Portland, OR www.luckylab.com 503-356-3555

The red color in this ale comes from a delicate balancing of roasted barley with Crystal, ESB and Northwest Pale malts. Three additions of Palisades hops balance the malty flavor with just enough crisp bitterness for balance. Portland Spring Beer & Wine Fest goers gave this one a Silver medal.

Solar Flare Ale is a light, refreshing ale, perfect for a hot summer day. That’s only fair, since the water used in the brewing process was heated by the sun in the Lab’s solar water heating system. Great Western and Scottish Pale malts are joined by a light Briess Carapils to give it a golden hue, while Brewers Gold hops provide moderate, balancing bitterness.

Lazy Boy is a small family-run brewery where, despite the name, everyone in the family works. The owners’ two daughters fit perfectly in the brew kettle and mash tun, so they have the job of cleaning them. Dad, an engineer, fixes whatever goes wrong, and Great Grandma Ellie helps with bottling. Lazy Boy’s Belgian Strong Ale took Gold at the 2007 NABA.

The Lucky Labrador Brew Pub opened its doors 14 years ago in an old timbered warehouse just over the Hawthorne Bridge from downtown Portland. Now with a satellite pub in Multnomah Village and a second brewpub in Northwest Portland, brewer Alex Stiles and crew churned out 2,200 barrels of ale last year. Enjoy a pint with Fido in the dog-friendly outdoor beer garden!

A half-dozen or so additions of Cluster, Simcoe and Tettnanger hops begin before the wort begins to boil and don’t quit until... well, we’re not quite sure when. Gambrinus Pale and Munich Light malts carry the hop load and feed the American ale yeast. We think the Gods will like this flower.

Summer Grifter is a wayward ale, lurking wherever thirsts gather. This seasonal IPA uses 2-Row, Munich and Caramel Malt and a hop bill of Chinook, CTZ, Cascade and Centennial. Grifter has a cunning malt balance and finishes with a hefty hop bite. This ale threatens to steal your allegiance and con your thirst into leaving town!

Lompoc Brewing features a family of cozy brewpubs in Portland, including the New Old Lompoc, Hedge House, Oaks Bottom Public House, and the Fifth Quadrant. Each has a diverse menu of fresh pub grub, a full bar, and a lineup of Lompc brews including LSD, C-Note, Proletariat Red and Sockeye Cream Stout.

At MacTarnahan’s, you’ll fnd a peculiar mix of overly obsessive individuals passionately creating something the civilized world simply can’t live without: great beer. GABF’s 2008 mid-sized brewery of the year was founded in 1986, making it one of Oregon’s oldest craft breweries. MacTarnahan’s Amber, its flagship ale, and Blackwatch Porter won gold at the 2008 GABF.

Marin Brewing Co Larkspur, CA www.marinbrewing.com 415-461-4677

Malt, wheat and oats form the substance of this translucent American version of a Belgian white ale. Light bodied yet rich tasting, coriander and lime leaves and a “secret blend” of herbs add subtle citrusy nuances to this refreshing, quaffable beer. This would be a perfect match for a falafel or hummus plate.

This three-time GABF gold medal winner starts with a Pale 2-Row and White Wheat malt base. Chinook hops at the beginning of the boil add just a hint of bitterness. Blueberry extract formulated especially for Marin gives it a gentle fruit profile, enhanced by the English-style yeast and the soft alkaline water.

The Lost Coast Brewery and Cafêhas “herstory.” Founded in 1990 by Barbara Groom and Wendy Pound in a 100-year-old restored wood frame structure, the brewery has since outgrown the original facilities in the Pythian Castle. Lost Coast now produces nearly 30,000 barrels per year of English-style ales with a West Coast twist.

Located in the shadow of Mt. Talalpais in the heart of California wine country, Marin Brewing is in its 21st year of business and produces more than two dozen different styles of beer. This large brewpub boasts a beer garden where you can soak up both suds and sun at the same time. The 14-barrel brewery requires lots of labor - a labor of love.

New Belgium Brewing Co Fort Collins, CO www.newbelgium.com 970-221-0524

This IPA won the Hillsdale Brewfest to earn the right to represent McMenamins at the OBF. Made with five different malts - Pilsen, Vienna, Amber, Special aromatic and C-120 - and a clean American ale yeast, it is bittered and flavored in abundance with Chinook and Sterling hops. Extra Chinooks are added for dry-hopping.

The Trip is a deep, golden ale generously hopped with Magnum and the seldom-used Citra hop, which produces flavors of grapefruit, peach and passion fruit. Spiced with lemongrass and grains of paradise, The Trip is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain for a hop-forward ale with swirling fruit undertones.

Concordia Brewery is located in McMenamins Kennedy School. Built in 1915, this former grade school is now home to a hotel, restaurant, four bars, a movie theater, and a soaking pool. School was never so fun when we were kids.

The hop levels are kept low so you can taste the delicate flavor of the pomegranate concentrate that gives this beer its unique fruit flavor. Great Western Wheat and Gambrinus Pale malts give the beer its base and golden color. This beer took silver at the California State Fair in 2008.

Golden Cap Saison is a modern interpretation of a traditional farmhouse ale. This soft, pale beer embodies the flavors and aromas of summer fields. Brewed with an ancestor of wheat called spelt, its straw-colored body, lively carbonation and a unique fermentation profile evoke fresh cut hay and cracked peppercorn.

Brendan Moylan opened this 20-barrel brewery in 1995, now boasting eight 40-barrel fermenters and a 20-barrel bright tank. Moylan’s brews about 20 different styles of beer with an annnual output of over 4,000barrels. If you visit the pub after 11:30 a.m., chances are you’ll find it open - it closes only on Christmas and Easter.

New Holland’s Mission: Art in Fermented Form. Established in 1996, NHBC has grown from a scrappy two-man start-up to a thriving regional microbrewery, recognized for its creativity and artistry. Now producing more than 9,500 barrels of beer annually in two locations in Holland, it also distills spirits and serves wine, cider, and a full menu in its downtown pub.

Mt Shasta Brewing Co Weed, CA www.weedales.com 530-938-2394

Ninkasi Brewing Co Eugene, OR www.ninkasibrewing.com 541-344-2739

This deep golden, mild and malty American IPA unites hops with fresh mountain spring water. Late hop additions contribute floral and pine aromas reminiscent of Mt. Shasta. The Simcoe hop profile starts smooth and builds up to a mellow, bitter finish. A generous dry hop emphasizes a green hop accent and enjoyable mountain-high aroma. Mt High IPA took first place in the 2008 California Brewers Festival.

This new beer for Ninkasi gets its elegant malty flavor and orange color from Pale, Vienna and a touch of dark Crystal malts, balanced by three doses of Millennium, Galena, Northern Brewer and Liberty hops. An additional dose of Liberty is used to dry-hop the beer to give it another boost in hop aroma and flavor.

Mt. Shasta opened in 2004 in buildings that originally housed the MedoBel Creamery in Weed, CA on the I-5 corridor. Mt. Shasta now distributes five brews in bottles, including a Shastafarian Porter, Mountain High IPA, Abner Weed Amber, Weed Golden Ale and Lemurian Golden Lager. Named for the delicate engravings popularized by 19th century seafarers, this GABF gold-medal winner is a fresh tasting Pilsner brewed in the finest European tradition using Munich malt and Hallertauer and Tettnang hops. Scrimshaw has a subtle hop character, a crisp, clean palate, and a dry finish.

Clean and spicy, with orange peel & coriander seed, this Belgian-style wheat beer is unfiltered and great on a hot summer day. Brewed with American 2-Row, White Wheat, Carapils, rolled oats and Belgian acidulated malt and lightly hopped with Nugget and Mt Hood, it won the 2004 People’s Choice Award at the Newport Microbrew Festival.

Pike Brewing Co Seattle, WA www.pikebrewing.com 206-622-6044

Gray skies are a regular part of life in Western Oregon. Overcast Espresso Stout is the dark and silky stout we crave while giving us the shot of organic espresso we need. After extracting all the goodness possible out of organic 2-Row, chocolate malt, C-120 malt, and roasted barley, the finished beer is steeped in locally roasted, cold-pressed organic espresso. I’ll have mine with cream and sugar, please.

This big, full-bodied beer has a complex flavor profile with a yeasty nose, fruity esters and malty dryness. Hints of honey, spice and exotic fruit play with your senses. Pale, Pils, Wheat and Aromatic malts are given a boost by candi sugar. Nugget and Saaz hops give it just enough bitterness to balance. Gold Medal Winner, 2008 North American Brewers Assn.

Oakshire, founded as Willamette Brewery in 2006, crafts four year-round and many seasonal beers in its 15-barrel brewhouse. Already available on tap in Portland, look for its beers in bottles sometime this year. Brewmaster Matt van Wyk was the 2006 GABF small brewpub brewer of the year while brewing for Flossmoor Station in Chicago.

Michael Jackson called Pike Brewing, founded in 1989 by Charles and Rose Ann Finkel, “a shrine to beer.” Located just a few steps from the worldfamous Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle, Pike produces distinctive quality classic ales such as Naughty Nellie’s, Kilt Lifter Scotch ale, and the estimable winter seasonal XXXXX Stout in its 30-barrel brewery.

Port Townsend Brewing Co Port Townsend, WA www.porttownsendbrewing.com 360-385-9967

Pale, Munich and Franco-Belges aromatic malts were boosted with organic Oregon honey to provide more fermentables without cloying sweetness in the finished beer. Copious amounts of Centennial, Simcoe, Amarillo Gold and Tettnanger hops balance all that malt with citrusy, spicy bitterness. Part of the brew was aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels.

The grain bill for this one is simple - almost 100% Great Western Premium 2-Row, with a touch of Caramel 20 malt - leaving plenty of room for you to taste the Centennial, Amarillo and Cascade hops. The beer is dry-hopped twice with Amarillo - once “warm” in the fermenter, and then again in the cold conditioning tank. This gives the beer extra hop flavor without extra bitterness.

The Old Market Pub and Brewery is cranking out some very fine beers in its new 15-barrel brewery. The huge dining room and bar - and fairweather deck - provide a relaxing environment to try its all-organic beers over a weekend breakfast and watch NFL football on the new flat-screen plasma and LCD TVs.

The original Port Townsend Brewing Co. was one of the largest breweries of its time before being shut down by Washington’s Prohibition initiative in 1914. Kim and Guy Sands opened the new namesake brewery in 1997. One of the few breweries practicing open fermentation, it produces 13 styles of beer in its home on the Olympic Peninsula.

Pyramid Breweries Seattle, WA www.pyramidbrew.com 206 682-3377

Rock Bottom Brewery Portland, OR www.rockbottom.com 503-796-BREW

Formerly known as Pyramid Hefeweizen (same beer, new name), this beer has won Gold at the 2004 GABF, Silver at the 1997 World Beer Championships, and Bronze at the 2000 World Beer Cup. Unfiltered in the Bavarian style, it is lightly hopped to allow the malty wheat flavor to pour through.

The down economy left brewer Van Havig with an oversupply of hops. What to do? Please the OBF crowd, that’s what. Heaving hopping in the kettle and hop back and double dry-hopping with the likes of Cascade, Amarillo, Simcoe and Crystal give this beer not only its aggressive bitterness but huge hop aroma and flavor as well.

Pyramid has been brewing quality craft ales and lagers in Seattle for more than two decades, winning 30+ GABF medals in that time. Now with breweries in Seattle, Portland and Berkeley, Pyramid continues to brew award-winning wheat beers inspired by Bavarian tradition, as well as a variety of craft and seasonal brews.

Rock Bottom is located just a few stumbles away from the festival grounds. It puts together a wide-ranging lineup of interesting, well-made beers to complement its informal American cuisine and lively bar scene. The brewers have wide latitude to create inventive brews such as Ned Flanders Ale.

Redhook Ale Brewery Woodinville, WA www.redhook.com 425-483-3232

Rogue Ales Newport, OR www.rogue.com 541-961-5265

Belgian candi sugar is added to this strong Belgian-style ale to give it an alcohol boost and to keep it drier in the finish. 2-Row, Munich, Caramel and Wheat malts provide its malty base, and a Belgian yeast gives it that characteristic old world flavor. Bittered in moderation with Northern Brewer hops, Saaz are added in the whirlpool for extra spice and aroma. 2008 and 2009 Gold Medal Winner û North American Brewers Assn.

Rogue likes to do things differently, and Latona Pale Ale is no exception. Unlike every other beer at the festival, it is a one-hop, one-malt strong pale ale. The hops are Mt. Rainier specialty hops and the malt is a FrancoBelges special aromatic malt of French origin.

Paul Shipman and Gordon Bowker founded Redhook Ale Brewery in 1981; in 1987, Redhook launched what has since become its flagship ale: ESB. With two state-of-the-art breweries, located in Woodinville, WA and Portsmouth, NH, Redhook has become the nation’s fifth largest craft brewer, delivering fresh beer across the country.

Master brewer John Maier produces awesome beers at the Rogue Brewery in Newport, OR. Rogue is known for creativity, flavor, and variety - it produces more than 30 beers! Many of its beers are available the Flanders St. pub, about a mile from the festival grounds, which also houses a microdistillery. Catch the Rogue Bus throughout the festival.

Good old-fashioned rolled oats give this dark, smooth stout its creamy texture. Its complex grist includes Pale 2-Row, Munich, Black Patent, C-15, Vienna and Chocolate malts, roasted barley and rolled oats. With this beer, you can satisfy tonight’s thirst and get a head start on tomorrow’s breakfast.

Two-row Pale malt, rolled oats, and a hint of chocolate malt form the base of this malt-forward brew. Turbinado sugar provides more fermentables and helps it finish dry. Moderate amounts of Galena hops bitter the brew just enough for balance, and Tettnangers are added for a little spicy hop flavor and floral aroma.

Nestled beneath the grain-rich rolling hills of Palouse in Clarkston, WA, near the confluence of Idaho’s Clearwater River and the mighty Snake, Riverport Brewing’s goal is to put the flavor back into your beer. Try its five year-round beers and a new seasonal Bock beer in its new taproom.

Starting with a 20-barrel system in the brew house, Scuttlebutt brewed its first beer on July 4, 1996. Since then, it has grown to include 320-barrels of fermenter/bright tank capacity in a new, expanded location, and has broadened its product line to include more than 17 styles of handcrafted ales.

Stone Brewing Co Escondido, CA www.stonebrew.com 760-471-4999

One of the OBF’s most unique brews, this ale/lager Acidulated malts with relatively hard water, then hopped with high-alpha Challenger and Perle hops as well as low-alpha Crystal, Sterling and Czech Saaz, which are more common to continental lagers. Its lager yeast provides a rich but crisp, dry finish. People’s choice winner at the 2008 Medford Battle of the Bones.

This hybrid is part California IPA, part Belgian, and 100% Stone. Columbus, Chinook and Centennial hops boost this brew into the IPA range of 77 IBUs, with further Chinooks added at dry-hopping for more aroma. The Belgian yeast strain gives it culture and worldliness and a flavor unique among IPAs.

Southern Oregon Brewing crafts beers using ale-based recipes, but ferments them with a Danish lager yeast at temperatures warmer than most traditional lagers. Crafted to be paired with food as well as to stand alone, its offerings include a Gold, Pale, Porter, Red and Na Zdravi Czech Pilsner.

Greg Koch and Steve Wagner founded Stone Brewing Co. in 1996 so they could make beers they liked to drink - and they have stuck to that philosophy. They now brew 12 different beers in their Escondido brewery, including IPA and Arrogant Bastard Ales. Special Release beers, made in a single batch only once a year, include Old Guardian Barely Wine, Imperial Russian Stout and the coveted Vertical Epic Ale.

Sprecher Brewing Co Glendale, WI www.sprecherbrewery.com 414-964-7837

Summit Brewing Co St Paul, MN www.summitbrewing.com 651-265-7800

Mai Bock is Sprecher’s spring seasonal offering, a deceptively strong pale lager, big in alcohol and malt flavor, with rich hop character and a light fruit bouquet. Caramel, Pale and Wheat malts give it the big body and maltiness. Mt Hood, Tettnanger and Willamette hops spice up the nose and provide just enough bitterness to balance. Eight weeks of aging rounds out its malty smoothness.

New for 2009, Horizon Red boasts six hop additions - four in the kettle, one in the whirlpool, and one in the fermenter for extra aroma and flavor. Summit, Horizon, Amarillo and Cascade hops give it a floral, citrusy nose and enough bitterness to balance the 2-Row, Caramel, Wheat and Black Patent malts. A highly attenuative American ale strain adds fruity esters and a dry, crisp finish.

Founded in 1985, Sprecher was the first microbrewery in Milwaukee, WI since Prohibition. This small, neighborhood brewery was crafted after those founder Randy Sprecher visited in Augsburg, Germany. Sprecher uses oldworld brewing methods to make European-style beers and gourmet sodas.

Founded in 1986, Summit Brewing’s goal is to bring back the remarkable craft beers once brewed throughout the upper Midwest. Summit’s dozen beers, available in 13 states, are all brewed with traditional ingredients and methods in small batches, earning Summit multiple GABF awards.

Standing Stone Brewing Co Ashland, OR www.standingstonebrewing.com 541-482-2448

Terminal Gravity Brewing Enterprise, OR www.terminalgravitybrewing.com 541-426-0158

Four additions of five different hops - Nugget, Crystal, Cascade, Centennial and Amarillo (including a final infusion of Amarillo for dry-hopping) push this brew’s hop character into the ozone. All of the malt is organic: Briess 2-Row, Munich and Crystal 60. SafBrew US-05 ale yeast produces very little diacetyl for a clean, crisp finish.

Festivale is made in the style of British strong or “old” ales. Brewed to be fairly dry, it has huge, complex malt and hop flavors with a nice little alcoholic warmth in the finish. Deep ruby brown in color, it will produce a fine cream colored cascading head. If you like strong ales, this might be one of your new favorites.

Founded in 1996, Standing Stone is Ashland’s only full service restaurant and brewery, located downtown in the Whittle Garage, a National Historic Registered building. All Standing Stone ales are made in 10-barrel batches using more than 80% organic malts. Grub includes soups, salads, sandwiches and wood-fired-oven pizzas.

Like an oasis in the desert, Terminal Gravity serves quality, flavorful beers from its home base in tiny Enterprise, OR. Vertigo Brewing Hillsboro, OR www.vertigobrew.com 503-645-6644

Stoneflye Rye is a unique beer utilizing 20% Rye Malt which provides a pleasantly spicy character. This unfiltered brew is full bodied in flavor, yet light on the palate with a smooth and dry finish. As soothing and refreshing as Central Oregon’s mountain streams, even the most finicky of fish canÆt turn their heads when this beer is presented.

This unfiltered American Wheat Ale is infused with real raspberries, not syrup, into the secondary fermenter for four days before being racked to a tertiary vessel for conditioning. The raspberries give the beer’s flavor a pleasant mix of sweet fruit and tartness. Hop levels are kept low so you can taste the berries.

Three Creeks, located in beautiful Central Oregon, offers a menu of casual and unpretentious pub food in a family-friendly environment. Its old west livery stable provides a comfortable, warm, rustic atmosphere that includes a full restaurant, 10-barrel brewing system, comfortable bar area with large-screen TVs and pool tables, and a large outdoor patio for enjoying its hand-crafted ales.

Vertigo is one of the newest breweries in Oregon and at the OBF, founded just last September in Hillsboro. This tiny brewery produces 10 to 12 barrels a month in one- barrel batches. Look for Friar Mike’s, its flagship English-style IPA, or its German Alt, hoppy American Amber, seasonal Cream Ale and Apricot ale.

200 Meter IPA is a true Northwest IPA - light and golden, almost orange in color, with a primary focus on hop flavor and aroma. Horizon, Amarillo, Centennial and Simcoe hops balance Northwest Pale and Munich malts, Free Range coastal water and top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

Heaps of German and Czech whole hops give this pale lager a bracing, herbal bite over layers of soft and smooth malt flavor. This refreshing combination of tastes makes Prima a classy quencher in the tradition of the great Pilsners of Europe. Dry and delightful, this is an elegant beer.

The newest Rogue Nation Outpost, Track Town, aka Eugene City, opened in October, 2004. Plans for this Rogue Nation outpost include having 34 taps, featuring both a huge selection of Rogue Ales & Lagers alongside rotating guest beers and specialty imports.

Begun by two childhood friends on the back of a school bus in 1973, Victory Brewing formally began operations in February of 1996. The brewery now serves fans of full-flavored beers in 20 states.

Trumer Pils is a traditional European Pilsner brewed to the exacting standards of Salzburg’s 400-year-old Trumer Brauerei. It has a creamy head, effervescent mouthfeel and a slightly hoppy nose that gives way to its signature clean, dry finish. The finest German and Austrian malts and Austrian and Hallertauer hops give this Pilsner its crisp, bitter flavors.

The reason for this beer’s popularity is no secret among Gasthaus-goers. Thick, black, roasty and strong, its malt bill includes 2-Row Pale, Caramel 60L, Extra Special, Roast and Chocolate malst. Northern Brewer and East Kent Goldings are added at the boil and at whirlpool. We would tell you more, but then we’d have to kill you.

With its sister brewery in Berkely, California, this historic Austrian brewery brings its old-world traditions to the progressive brewing environs of the US West Coast. Brewed exactly as it is in the old country, Trumer Pils won a Gold medal at the 2006 European Beer Star Awards and again at the 2007 Australian International Beer Awards.

What started as a dream for two ordinary brothers who loved beer has become a reality for two ordinary brothers who still love beer. Kurt and Rob Widmer helped lead the Pacific Northwest craft beer movement in 1984 when, in their twenties, they dreamed of brewing American interpretations of authentic European style beers. Based in Portland, OR, the brewery currently produces a variety of award-winning craft beers including Widmer Hefeweizen, Drifter Pale Ale, Drop Top Amber Ale and Broken Halo IPA.
