Douglas County Readers Choose Their Favorite Places of Business This years Reader’s Choice was a huge success. We recieved thousands of ballots from readers all over Douglas County. There are hundreds of reasons why people love Douglas County, and each fall, the Advertising Department at the News Review sets out to learn more about what makes Douglas County a special place. When friends and family come to visit, you can use this guide to help find the local favorites in hundreds of catagories. The results are in. The ballots are counted.Their choices are contained in this unique adversing section-The Reader’s Choice awards. This year we decided to change the look of the Reader’s Choice section. We hope you like the changes. The first place winners will recieve a “Platinum” ribbon. The two runners up will recieve “ Gold” ribbons. Last fall, we published a full page questionaire and asked

Scott and Carla Rutter, owners of Creative Catering, Inc., aren't the new kids in town. They were both raised in Roseburg and graduated from RHS is 1973 and returned to their hometown six years ago to live their dream. While training as a chef, Scott met Chef Simon Boswell who introduced Scott to the world of culinary creativity. Chef Simon became the influential force behind Scott and Carla's newly formed company, Smokehouse Catering and B-B-Q. A mobile catering kitchen was custom built to better provide catering services on location. Now, they are able to cater even the most unique events. Smokehouse Catering soon outgrew its name. Weddings, company dinners, banquets, private parties, reunions, community events and pairing food with local wines for barrel tours and winemakers' dinners were added to the growing list of offerings Creative Catering has begun to offer their expanded services and allow for Chef Scott's greater creativity.

Chef Scott specializes in the preparation of the meats, fish, poultry and side dishes. Carla bakes breads and creates the sumptuous desserts. Scott's rubs have become a local phenomenon and the secret to many of his smokehouse delights. Just a few of Chef Scott's signature creations are his smokehouse salmon, linguicia stuffed mushrooms, java tri-tip, pork loin and Cajun jambalaya. Carla's homemade dinner rolls, chocolate mousse, coconut pie and Belgium rice are sought for many events. Creative Catering was the primary food service providers for the Wildlife Safari in 2007 and 2008. In May of 2008, they were able to add another accomplishment to their list of achievements. Chef Scott won the 2008 Riverside Iron Chef Competition. This month they are excited to open the doors to their new location, 60 SE Main, Winston, Oregon. While providing the same exquisite catering and barbeque services that have earned their reputation, they will soon tempt us a new dimension to their business. 27 Years of Great Service Roseburg Audiology Center has served Douglas County for 27 years and sees patients of all ages, children as well as adults. The center provides complete, professional diagnostic hearing services, as well as hearing aids and hearing conservation services. There are currently three licensed Audiologists on staff. Audiologist Carol D. Beach founded Roseburg Audiology in 1981, and continues to dedicate her time and effort to excellent patient care. Dental Health Care From a Staff That Cares For the seventh time in eight years the team at The Dental Health Center is pleased to be honored as the number one dentist in the News Review Readers Choice Awards. “We have worked hard to provide the best possible care, with the most comforting and professional staff in town. From all of us – Dr. Davis, the Associates and myself – we thank you”, stated Dr. J. Lee Sharp when asked about the honor. “It means a lot that, over the years, we have been able to consistently provide our services at the highest level and be once again honored by the community.” What sets the Dental Health Center apart in the dental community is their care and dedication. “I recall a little boy who broke his tooth where I worked”, relates Margarete Vincent, a current patient. “It was after hours and

the boy’s dentist couldn’t see him. I knew The Dental Health Center saw patients anytime and suggested that the boy’s mother call. A few weeks later I saw the young man again. His tooth was fixed and I asked ‘How did it go?’. He and his mother had nothing but praise – and a smile. That’s why my family goes to the Dental Health Center; they really care.” The Dental Health Center began as a practice in 1984. “In all those years we’ve found that our patients appreciate the little things we do to make them feel comfortable, ” notes Linda Sharp, office manager and wife of Dr. Sharp. “Our staff strives to make every visit pleasant and inviting, we go the extra mile to make a difference. From our giant fish tank that soothes the nerves to the chair side manner of our staff, we try to make everything easy.” “We offer a wide variety of

dental treatments as well as mild, moderate and deep sedation to increase patient comfort and ease their fears.” Dr. Sharp continues, “from Implants, dentures, crowns or cleanings, we customize our treatments to best meet the needs of our clientele.” The Dental Health Center offers flexible hours to adapt the needs of the public. Dr. Sharp goes on to ask “The question is why shouldn't a dentist be open when you need to see them? With hours on Saturday and 24 hour emergency services we hope to meet our patient’s needs.” The whole staff is dedicated to caring about the community. “Just the other day, a patient came in”, says Lori B., a member of the front office staff asked why she enjoys the Dental Health Center. “She just wanted to thank us for the way we treated her anxiety about seeing the dentist. She was also very pleased

with the way the hygienist gave her injections without pain. It’s nice to be appreciated in what we do; I just like the way we help people”. The staff at the Dental Health Center is also involved in community programs promoting dental care including participation in free “Dental Day” programs for those who can’t afford care, free sealant days, volunteering for the Northwest Medical Team’s mobile dental van each quarter, and visiting schools during Dental Health Month in February. They also focus on care to people with disabilities or phobias with patients coming from as far away as Klamath Falls and Medford. “When we heard the news, we were excited”, admits Linda. “It means a great deal to us to be honored from the readers of the News Review. Great Mexican Food Gustavo Anaya came into the restaurant business in Roseburg in the worst possible way: taking the reins of Los Dos Amigos following the death of his 33-year-old sister and her husband. But what started in pain for Gustavo and his family has turned into tremendous community support. Gustavo has been operating Los Dos Amigos for 18 years, watching the business grow to five locations, with a total of 80 employees. The business truly is family-run. Wife Coco, daughter Olga, sons Julio and Manny are all part of the success story. Los Dos had already become popular through the efforts of Rosalio and Blanca Guitron, who died in a car accident in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1995. The two had grown up in a town near Guadalajara and were in Mexico to work on their farm at the time of the accident. The Guitrons were sole own-

ers of the downtown Roseburg Los Dos Amigos restaurant and were part owners of the newer restaurant on Northeast Stephens Street. In addition to the two Roseburg stores, Gustavo, along with oldest son Manny, operates a Los Dos restaurant in the Roseburg Valley Mall and one in Sutherlin. Younger son Julio goes along with Dad, as well as helping out where he can. A fifth restaurant is in Coos Bay. Gustavo says Los Dos takes pride in serving authentic Mexican food. The restaurant offers reserved seating and accommodates large parties; customers also may gather in the lounge area. Owners and staff alike at Los Dos Amigos would like to thank everyone for making their business a success, and for voting them Numero Uno. Founded in 1978 in Winchester, Kamper Korner was purchased by Harlan Koens about 10 years ago; son Wade bought into the business about four years ago. They run a full-service RV dealership in the areas of parts, sales and service. One example of how Kamper Korner seeks to meet changing market conditions (and rising gas prices) is by offering a full line of 2008 tent trailers. That allows customers with smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles to continue to enjoy the RV lifestyle without having to resort to pitching tents or checking into motels. Eye Doctor Saves Lives I worked for both the Oregon Eye Bank and also for OHSU ophthalmology research lab during medical school, and realized I wanted to specialize in eyes when I saw how much of an impact ophthalmologists have on quality of life. My most memorable case was a teenager who came in for a routine eye exam, but also mentioned that he was having unexplained fevers and severe pain and numbness in his feet and hands. He had been to many different doctors around the state but no diagnosis had been found. When I examined his eyes,

I found subtle fine lines on his corneas that led to my diagnosis of Fabry’s disease. Fabry’s disease is a rare genetic disease that left untreated can lead to death from renal failure at age 20-40. This patient is receiving gene therapy for the disease and now leads a normal life. It’s the greatest feeling in the world to open the News Review over the years and read about his ski team accomplishments, his graduations, and his wedding. I am on the board of directors of Rotary Club of Roseburg. I am also volunteering as a hostess for the Miss Douglas County

Pageant. I participate in the charitable activities of Reedemer’s Fellowship. I volunteer my time as an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology, and as a member of the editorial advisory board of the magazine of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. I have been committed to obtaining the highest level of education and credentialing available. As an ophthalmologist (an MD with an additional 3+years specialty training in eyes), I provide complete medical and surgical care for the eyes. I am board certified, and have been chosen to be

an associate examiner for the oral boards of the American Board of Ophthalmology. I have the latest in technology in my office to aid in diagnosis and treatment of eye disease and to ensure complete accuracy of glasses prescriptions. My staff prides themselves on their professionalism, knowledge, and customer service, and we get complimented on that all the time. I provide for 24 hour/day, 7 days a week, 365 days/year coverage for my patients for emergencies.
