The Philippine–New York Jaycees Why is the Philippine-New York Jaycees Chapter specifically mentioned in the Jaycee Book as “Young Men Can Change the World”? Because our Chapter was the first ethnic chapter in the world. Yes, these young Filipino-Americans changed and continue to change the world. It took two years of debates in the highest levels of the United States Junior Chamber (US Jaycee) and Junior Chamber International (JCI) to secure our charter. Back then, Jaycees were formed only on the basis of well-defined geographical boundaries. It was then such a revolutionary idea. Thus, right at the beginning, we made history and continue to do so. Our Chapter was founded by a group of idealistic young men in the 60’s to serve the social and civic needs of the then fledgling Filipino-American community. The same idealism was handed down from past Jaycee generations to the present. The mantle of leadership has been passed on with an abiding sense of enthusiasm and commitment. The Jaycee Creed, which represents our common belief in the common goodness and inherent abilities in each individual, has successfully thrived in the hearts and minds of the Philippine-New York Jaycees’ officers and members. A few events mark our Chapter. The first was our newsletter (ethnically named in 1975) “Tambuli,” which continues to chronicle our Chapter adventures. The second is our ability to change with the times (we were among the first chapters to admit women members.) The third is our common desire to succeed which is the hallmark of strangers in a strange land. We are proud to pioneer and continue to run projects beneficial to our members and community needs. We welcomed the Democrats to their 1976 national convention. We organized and orchestrated the celebration of Filipino culture at Lincoln Center. We supported Kid’s Day America, which taught children health & overall safety awareness; and environmental & conservation knowledge. We continue to organize health fairs in the community. We conduct personal, professional and career development workshops. We help run the New York City Marathon by giving out water to the runners. We honor excellent community leaders (Distinguished Service Award); conduct seminars for the youth through leadership excellence program (CLEWs); and Outstanding Young New Yorker (OYNY) programs. We support city and state programs (voters registration, recycling campaigns, census and immigration forums); raise funds and conduct awareness programs for local, national and international groups benefiting among the others – street children we are sending to school (Aksyon Agad); Amerasian children (Operation Giftlift); build libraries for poor children (Walk Against Poverty); International Child Care Center; Our Lady of Peace Mission; Little Sisters of the Poor; and the World Trade Center Relief Fund. We organize events (Simbang Gabi) to commemorate Filipino tradition. We collaborate with other organizations such as Building Futures Together, CORE and FAHSI. We proudly march and volunteer at The Philippine Independence Day Parade. We attend meetings with our government leaders in Washington, DC. We are behind many events that benefit our communities, our members and our world. To date, we are the only young group in the community devoted to leadership training of our members and the community through Business Development, Speak-Up, Financial Management, Personal Dynamics, Public Relations, Communication Dynamics, Team Building Skills, Time Management, Write-Ups, International Connections, Networking, and numerous community-oriented projects. The organization of choice for young men and women from 18 to 40 years of age, our Chapter has turned out Filipino-Americans who went on to become leaders in their own areas of expertise and organizations. We are proud of the Philippine New York Jaycees. To whoever reads this history and whose idealism continue to seek direction and purpose and a Creed to live by, come and be a part of the continuing legacy of leadership and excellence.

CONSULATE GENERAL OF THE PHILIPPINES New York

Congratulations to the 2009 officers and new members of the Philippine New York Junior Chamber, Inc. headed by 2009 Chapter President Elaine D. Magalona-Dayoan. My warm congratulations too to the 2008 team under Immediate Past President Victor de Leon. The Chapter won many major awards in the 2008 New York State year-end Convention. Among them - the most-coveted Chapter of the Year Award, and the Most Outstanding Local President and Vice-President of the Year Awards. I have great hopes for our Jaycee young leaders. I am sure that the 2009 team will create one more banner year for the Chapter. With all the planned activities for personal and professional development and with the camaraderie and bonds you will create among yourselves, there is no way but to let the synergy explode into positive forces. The leadership training you will get in the organization will surely propel you all to new perspectives and greater advantages. The experiences, the challenges, the networking with the bigger Jaycee community in the United States and in the world, the friendships- all these will surely make this time of your lives truly memorable! And most of all will help make you better Filipino-Americans, better citizens in your communities.

Having served as the 44th Chapter President in 2007 of this great Philippine New York Jaycees organization, I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication that it takes in creating positive change. Now currently serving as the International Affairs Vice-President (IAVP) of the JCI-New York State Jaycees in 2009, it is my desire and goal that we can all appreciate and share with others the great camaraderie and unity that exists among fellow Jaycees throughout the world. To the incoming 2009 Team of Officers, I only wish the best of luck and good fortune to yet another year of success and great achievements. March 14, 2009 Greetings Fellow Jaycees and Friends! It is with much delight that I welcome you to The Philippine-New York Junior Chambers’ 46th Induction of Officers and Presentation of Members! This induction marks a very significant beginning for Team 2009. As the year begins with many personal, professional and economic challenges; we can’t help but look back and remember similar circumstances our founding members went through 46 years ago. 1963 was a difficult but an exciting year for our founding members. Establishing our organization in a strange land was not an easy feat, more so maintaining and strengthening our chapter to reach its 46th year! Through all those years, The Philippine-New York Jaycees had its highs and lows but despite its many difficulties, the chapter and its members have remained true to its creed and have succeeded repeatedly. The year 2009 poses a challenge for many of us. However, it is in these situations where opportunities arise. In these times when external resources are not readily available, the ability to shine and be better leaders are exceedingly abundant. That is why this year’s theme of “ U n l e a s h i n g P o t e n t i a l s ” is so fitting. Turbulent times such as these call for creativity, resourcefulness and skill. Through our programs in the areas of Individual, Community & Management Development, Membership Services and International Affairs, we aim to provide our members with avenues to allow them to share their talents; to learn from each other; and to reach within themselves in order to develop their abilities; and most importantly, to U n l e a s h t h e i r P o t e n t i a l s through the Jaycees!

March 14, 2009 Fellow JAYCEES; Distinguished Guests; Family; and Friends, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to The Philippine-New York Junior Chamber's 2009 Installation of Officers and Presentation of New Members. This is an annual rite and tradition, one in which we welcome and herald a fresh group of exciting, young, and motivated individuals to take over the reins of this storied organization. This is why it is such a significant event that is, greatly, anticipated with the arrival of each year; as with any new experience, there is much to look forward to--an opportunity to start with a clean slate; build upon recent successes; learn from shortcomings; execute innovative and bold ideas; and, simply, BE BETTER! How fitting it is, then, that this ceremonial changeover of responsibility--and potential--is set to occur just as we are perched on the doorstep of spring, a season of renewal and rebirth, and how intriguing, as well, that this nation we call home has, recently, experienced its own seamless transition, wherein a pledge was put forth to do what is necessary to effect positive change in our society. We, as this year’s incoming group of leaders, must make AND take that promise to heart as well, if we are to build upon the greatness that has been achieved over the lifetime of this chapter’s existence. We cannot allow ourselves to become content and complacent, simply, because excellence is, often, synonymous with The Philippine-New York Junior Chamber; we have to continue to persevere; be diligent; and remain focused on the challenges at hand. As we look to the months ahead, I urge all of you, my fellow teammates, to act beyond the call of duty; ‘go the extra mile’; and step up when the occasion beckons. For this is how those who follow in our footsteps, will be inspired to reach their own ‘spring’--a re-affirmation of the continuity of leadership--and, ultimately, drive each of us to stand head and shoulders above everyone else. Congratulations, officers, and Godspeed! Yours in JAYCEE spirit,

Victor E. de Leon 2009 Chairman of the Board & Immediate Past President The Philippine-New York Junior Chamber(JAYCEES), Inc.

March 14, 2009 Dear Fellow Jaycees and guests, On behalf of the Senators, Ambassadors, Governors and Past Presidents of the Philippine New York Junior Chamber, I would like to extend my congratulations to President Elaine MagalonaDayoan and to the rest of Team 2009. Each year presents unique challenges to overcome and this year is made a little more difficult with the economic conditions around us. But through my years of experience, I have come to realize that the Philippine New York Junior Chamber members have always been able to rise up to meet challenges of the day…to achieve more with the limited resources we have. Perhaps the most important aspect of the Jaycee experience is the personal development that each of us undergoes. The Jaycee experience is not for everyone but for those who do take an active role in this global organization, they will come to realize how much of a better or different person they are. Many Jaycee members have gone on to do great things with other organizations and other communities. I hope that each of you will be able to share what you have learned to others around you so that our world can be a better place for everyone. As I see the culmination of my 16 years of active service to the chapter, I am thankful for the opportunity to have served in various capacities. I have learned so much from my peers and guest speakers through the years. I am proud to have developed the confidence to train others and best of all, I am privileged to have traveled the world to meet motivated Jaycees just like me. I am delighted that President Elaine has taken over the helm of leadership this year… being President is never an easy job but by having a firm vision and a dependable and hardworking team I have no doubt that you will achieve your goals this year. Each Vice President, Director and staff officer plays an important role in the success of the chapter this year. We all have the same 24 hours in a day to do things; it is in how you manage your time, your members, your contacts & resources that guarantees success. TEAM 2009, I wish you all the best during the year. The Senators, Ambassadors and Governors as well as past presidents are more than happy to support you in your endeavors…all you have to do is ask. Have a productive year!

Mabuhay ang Philippine New York Junior Chamber. Mabuhay tayong lahat.

Congratulations to PhilNewYork Jaycees for another year of Induction and Turn-over Ceremonies. Your success and awards in the Jaycee movement only prove how Filipinos excel wherever we are. For years that the PhilNewyork Jaycees has stood in the Jaycee movement also showed that there is heroism in each of the Filipino’s heart and we want to make this world a better place for everyone. We are just beginning to solidify our friendship and sisterhood to you as our newest sister chapter in the Jaycee movement. We feel, however, that we’ve already created a strong bond probably because our precious past president JCI Senator Cri-Cri Ramos is an active Ambassador of Goodwill of PhilNewYork. I thank your members and officers for opening the door of sisterhood. Great seas and oceans literally separate us, but our passions to serve the community bind us together. We look forward for a meaningful and happy sisterhood with you. We’ve only just begun… Mabuhay ang PhilNewyork Jaycees! Laiden G. Pedriña President JCI-PERLAS PASAY (Philippines) 2009 PERLAS A.C.E. Junior Chamber International Junior Chamber International (JCI) JCI is the world’s largest leadership organization with a worldwide community of young active citizens, ages 18-40, who share the belief that in order to create positive change, we must take collective action to improve ourselves and the world around us. Vision: To contribute to the advancement of the global community by providing the opportunity for young people to develop the leadership skills, social responsibility, entrepreneurship and fellowship necessary to create positive change. Mission: To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. Values (The JCI Creed): We believe: That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth's great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life. JCI Logo: The shield symbol was originally used by the US Junior Chamber to represent “one who protects or defends.” As active citizens, JCI members were and are expected to protect and defend their communities and the world. Originally, the US Junior Chamber used a map of the United States inside the shield. When the organization became international, the map was replaced by the globe symbol, which is a map of the world with the North Pole in the center. It is the exact same globe symbol used in the United Nations logo. As one of the first non-governmental organizations with Special Consultative Status in the UN, JCI was given permission to use the UN symbol within our logo.

name change, with the YMPCA becoming the 'Junior Citizens', colloquially 'JCs' or 'Jaycees'. The St. Louis Junior Chamber of Commerce then asked them to adopt the name 'Junior Chamber of Commerce'. After World War I, the organization contacted similar groups in the United States. A pamphlet describing the 'St. Louis Plan' was sent in response to questions regarding the group and invitations were issued for a caucus. When the proceedings opened in St. Louis on January 21, 1920 with 30 cities represented. A provisional constitution was adopted until a convention could be held in June. With the adoption of a provisional constitution and the election of officers, the national Junior Chamber movement was born. Henry Giessenbier won election as provisional president of the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce (USJCC) by acclamation, and was joined by other officers from St. Louis; El Paso and Dallas Texas; Terre Haute, Indiana; and Springfield, Massachusetts. The 'United States Junior Chamber of Commerce' was established with 29 clubs from around the nation. On May 14, 1925 Lincoln Junior Chamber JCI UK was formed, thought to be the first Junior Chamber outside the United States. A Birmingham branch was formed in 1927, followed the same year by a Sheffield branch and by a Nottingham branch in early 1928. By the time officials from the U.S. Junior Chamber visited England in 1928, there were already eleven functioning chambers. In 1929, Douglas Jelley, President of 'Northampton Jaycees' visited the United States for the first time, which was followed by a visit by a delegation of three Sheffield Members led by W.G. Ibberson to the annual convention of the U.S. Junior Chamber in Brooklyn in 1930. The first formal attempts to form an international organization came at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1932 when an International Executive Committee was formed. However the U.S Junior Chamber was not sure whether this was a separate organization or one of their own committees. The U.S. Junior Chamber official history does not record that the group evolved into anything more than a loose grouping of member nations with the U.S., Canada, England, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia and Colombia. In 1936, at the national conference in Liverpool representatives from several countries determined to form an International Junior Chamber, but this appears to have been overlooked when JCI was eventually formed.

Each JCI Organization used a version of this mark with their organization name incorporated in their own way, until in 2003 all Junior Chamber organizations were asked to unite under the name JCI and follow the current version of the JCI Corporate Identity Guidelines.

In 1940, a resolution was passed by JCI USA approving a program to further mutual interests among countries in Central and South America. This led to the establishment of JCI organizations in Mexico City, Guatemala City, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama City in 1943.

History: The Young Men's Progressive Civic Association (YMPCA) was formed in October 13, 1915 which grew to membership of 750 in less than five months. 1916 saw a

A meeting took place in Mexico City in December 1944 which was billed as an Inter-America Meeting at which representatives of the U.S.A. and seven Latin American countries attended and it was at this meeting that the

decision to form Junior Chamber International (JCI) was taken. It was resolved to hold a further meeting in Panama City in 1946. In 1944, the first international conference was held in Mexico City. Raul Garcia Vidal of Mexico was elected JCI's first President. The countries that originally formed JCI were Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the United States of America. The First JCI World Congress Junior Chamber International would come into formal being at the First World Congress in Panama at the end of February in 1946. It was attended by 44 delegates from 16 different countries. Presided over by Erasmo Chambonnet of Panama, since JCI President Raul Garcia Vidal was ill and unable to attend, the delegates approved a temporary Constitution and set for themselves a list of purposeful resolutions which all in attendance agreed to follow. Erasmo Chambonnet of Panama was elected the second JCI President at that JCI Congress, and Australia and Canada were officially affiliated.

(MDGs), a set of time-bound and measurable goals and targets for combating poverty, as a framework for positive change in the community. In the 2003 JCI Summit at the United Nations, JCI took over the responsibility to contribute to the efforts of the UN and presented a resolution supporting the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In the 2004 Summit JCI decided to focus on the promotion of the MDGs 1 and 6 in Africa/Middle East, MDG 1 in Asia/Pacific, MDGs 4 and 8 in the Americas and MDG 8 in Europe. The 2008 UN Leadship Summit in New York focussed on Corporate Social Responsibility and the UN Global Compact. The summit initiated cooperation on the subject with International Chamber of Commerce. Also some time was devoted to Malaria No More. In 2009, the JCI Leadership Summit will be held in Geneva,Switzerland due to the renovation of the UN Building in New York.

In 1948, the JCI Creed was officially adopted at the IV JCI World Congress in Rio de Janeiro, and in 1952 a permanent JCI Headquarters was established. In 2002, after more than 30 years in Coral Gables, Florida, the JCI Headquarters moved to Chesterfield, Missouri.

JCI TOYP The JCI Ten Outstanding Young Persons (JCI TOYP) of the World program is intended to formally recognize young people who excel in their chosen fields and thus exemplify the best attributes of the world's young people.

Jaycees Leadership: Unleashing Potentials

Elaine Magalona-Dayoan 2009 Chapter President Elaine Magalona-Dayoan is a well-disciplined, straightforward and determined leader of one of the local chapters of the world’s largest leadership organization – Junior Chamber International. Over the years, Elaine has been an active and enthusiastic participant in the FilipinoAmerican community through her involvement in two organizations: The Philippine-New York Junior Chamber (Jaycees) and University of the Philippines Alumni Association in New York (UPAA-NY). As an active U.P. alumna in New York, Elaine was a part of the team that raised $10,000.00 for the Adopt-a-Scholar Project for the benefit of current students in the University. Elaine was also a part of the team that brought projects like Summer Fling, La Visa Loca Movie Premiere in New York City, Champagne Brunch with University Chancellor and Brunch with the University President. Elaine was the association’s Secretary from 2006-2008 and was recently elected to the position of Vice-President. As a Jaycee, Elaine held a number of positions which she managed and handled in a remarkable manner. Before becoming a Chapter President, Elaine held the positions of Director, Individual Development Vice President (IDVP) and Management Development Vice President (MDVP) for two consecutive years. As an MDVP, Elaine supervised the chapter’s biggest fundraising project (Spooktacular Halloween Jam) in 2006 which raised a significant amount of funds to help sustain the chapter’s operations. In the same year, Elaine conceptualized and supervised a highly successful life-coaching seminar, in collaboration with The Philippine Consulate, which featured a team of coaches & mentors from the International Coach Federation of New York City. As an IDVP, Elaine supervised projects like Investment Seminar for Young Professionals; Seminar on Leadership and Integrity; and Future Officers Training Workshops focusing on topics such as Communication, Life Management, Branding & Work-Life Balance. This seminar featured speakers and experts from Animal Planet, Fox Broadcasting Corporation & a three-time Olympian. Through Elaine’s ability to motivate and guide members; her strong leadership skills; and personalized approach, she has been recognized by The Philippine-New York Jaycees and The New York State Jaycees as one of its consistent achievers. The Philippine New York Junior Chamber recognized her Most Outstanding Vice President of the Year (2006) and Outstanding Vice President and Director (2007). In Region South, she was presented with the Outstanding Rookie of the Year award in 2005. In 2006, the New York State Junior Chamber presented Elaine with the Outstanding Chapter Vice President award for the 2nd Quarter. In addition, she was awarded with the Most Outstanding Chairman’s Planning Guide for the project “Taking the Lead in your Life”, cowritten with Mary Reggie Rosales, in the 2nd Qtr of 2006. The Chairman’s Planning Guide for the project Spooktacular Halloween Jam, co-authored by Aprille Aquino, was judged as the Most Outstanding Planning Guide for the Year. In 2008, Elaine was recognized as an Outstanding Local Vice President in New York State for the 3rd Session and Most Outstanding for the year. As a Chapter President, Elaine is not planning to rest on her laurels. She is determined to lead her team to yet another successful year. Although she believes awards and recognitions are sources of encouragement and motivation, Elaine puts a great deal of importance in bringing out the best in each individual member and bringing them together despite individual uniqueness. Elaine deeply believes in two lines of the Jaycee Creed which say, “…That the Brotherhood of Men Transcends the Sovereignty of Nation; and That Earth’s Great Treasure Lies in Human Personality.” Elaine firmly believes that if each Jaycee is encouraged to

share his talent and ideas – whether it is creative, entrepreneurial or professional – with another individual; and if they are given an avenue to apply those talents and ideas in real-life opportunities, then the ability of that Jaycee to become a good and effective leader is on its road to flourish. Elaine hopes that under her leadership, she can inspire Jaycee members to realize their talents and reach out to unleash their potentials. Elaine is determined to unleash the potentials of Jaycee Members so they can all maximize their abilities, share their talents, and grow to become innovative leaders of this community. Elaine was born and raised in the Manila, Philippines. She acquired her Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Communication from the University of the Philippines and is currently working as a Human Resources Professional at Nippon Life Insurance Company of America. She is married to her best friend, Almor F. Dayoan and they live with a feline named Tobi. Aprille P. Aquino Management Development Vice President Aprille P. Aquino met PP/Senator Antero Martinez during her first date with her now husband Nonong Aquino. Knowing that she was new in the country he gave his sales pitch about the Jaycees and Aprille was intrigued and decided to join the chapter. She became a member in 2006 and since then she has been participating in different Jaycee projects. She served as a Secretary in 2006 where she chaired two projects, one of which was a very successful Halloween fundraising event. The Chairman’s Planning Guide for the Spooktacular Halloween Event was awarded by the state as Most Outstanding for the year. In 2007, she took on the position of Community Development Vice President and in 2008 she was the Public Relation’s Officer. This year she is serving as Management Development Vice President. For her, this position is very challenging since it deals with the operation and managing of the chapter. Aprille was born and raised in the Philippines and the eldest amongst three siblings of Arnel and Cel Piamonte. Her sister, Armi is also a member of the chapter and is serving as a Director. Aprille is a graduate of Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology in Asia Pacific College and is also a Microsoft Certified IT Professional. Ted has participated in different Jaycee events. Last year he served as the Community Development Vice President. One of the projects that he organized was a “Floatacious” Fundraising which raised money for the float rental to be used in the Philippine Independence Day Parade. Ted likes spontaneous activities, going to numerous events and food. He is a happy go-lucky guy who enjoys adventurous activities such as sky diving, skiing, whitewater rafting and traveling. He is an event planner by profession. Almor Dayoan Community Development Vice President Almor Dayoan joined the Philippine New York Jaycees in 2005 and since then has chaired projects, and become a vital part of this chapter

with his constant support and dedication. He currently works as a Junior Business Manager for Kinetic Worldwide which holds the world’s largest portfolio for out of home advertising. Some of their clients include Miller Coors, Boost Mobile and AT&T. Almor is also an avid professional wresting fan and like his in-ring idols, he possesses the charisma and technical prowess that has proven his leadership skills in his professional career and in the Philippine New York Jaycees. Almor will serve as Community Development Vice President for 2009 and is looking to continue the legacy of Past Community Development Vice Presidents. Edwin Ochoa International Affairs Vice-President Edwin Ochoa (known by some as Mr. Ocho Ocho) joined the Philippine New York Junior Chamber in April 2007. He was motivated by a challenge to improve the chapter’s website. He quickly signed on as web administrator and started to rebuild the website from scratch. Today, through Edwin’s diligence, chapter members can now appreciate words such as “JOOMLA”, web marketing, reaching your audience and unique visitors to a site…of course, keeping an eye on opportunities to share the web space with our sponsors. The chapter website has become the first place to engage potential and current members. It has expanded its capacity to now include chats, videos, forums, event planning and web based newsletter. New York State took notice and this website was recognized as the best in the state. It is now up for National awards consideration and may soon be a contender in the worldwide stage. Edwin was elected as 2008 director and web administrator and he will continue to serve the chapter as 2009 IAVP. Although he usually does not like being in the limelight, Edwin’s technical skills has helped to propel him into the forefront of projects such as the Year end celebration (2006), the Presidential Gala (2008) and 45th anniversary celebration (Oct 2008). Edwin is currently an IT Manager at Kintetsu International and is the proud father to 8 year old EJ and 16 year old Carmen. Carmencita-Mia Fulgado Membership Services Vice President Carmencita-Mia Q. Dear Jaycees and Friends:

All of us have memories; they are among our treasures. We dream of having the written treasures we can keep, share with others, our relations, and friends, and bequeath them to our heirs. I therefore invite you to pen your memoir now, your autobiography, a memoir of a turning moment in your life, recollection of your college days, express love and gratitude to special people, create a poem, share an important message or lesson learned in writing. With your donations, they will be published in a distinguished hard cover, glossy paged, art designed book for our children to keep and treasure. Welcoming the new challenges for Philippine education in the 21st Century and with the New Charter, the premier university of the Philippines needs our help through our "written treasures" bound as a coffee table book which will be produced by nominal donation of benevolent benefactors like you.

Memoirs of UP Alumni Abroad netted a donation to UP of a total of $50,000. For this all-inclusive project to produce Memories...a Legacy Gift which welcomes all who wish to donate, the goal is $100,000, also an endowment fund which will award only interest earned by the fund...a GIFT THAT CONTINUES TO GIVE, now and in generations to come, to our children's children and beyond. Let's not put off till tomorrow what we can do today...tomorrow may never come. And remember, it's in giving that we receive...the more we give, the more we receive.
