Tri-Cities Legislative Council

taking issues to Olympia

ToastMasters: the Gift of Gab! On Monday, February 9th, the Pasco Chamber will host its regular monthly luncheon meeting. This month’s speaker will be Christopher Turner of CNT Consulting in Kennewick. He’ll be speaking on speaking, more or less... Turner is a member of the My Time Our Time Toastmasters club. The group describes it’s mission as, “...to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.”

Every year about this time, the Tri-Cities Legislative Council loads up a bus and heads over to see the Powers That Be in the state capitol. And they’re asking you to come along...

development, climate change and renewable energy, regional transportation, Hanford clean-up and a discrepancy between what Lockheed-Martin pays in B&O taxes versus other DOE contractors.

The TCLC’s annual lobbying trip takes place February 19th and 20th this year. $310 covers the bus ride over and back, a night at the Red Lion Inn at Capitol Lake, meals and receptions, meetings with political officials and a group photo in the Senate.

Thursday evening, the 19th, TCLC will host a reception that is expected to attract 250 politicians, lobbyists and others. Last year a band led by Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen provided the music and they are expected back this year.

Issues that the TCLC will weigh in on this year are economic

Among the subjects on which Turner frequently consults are Team Building, Time Management, Social Styles and Communication, Leadership, Strategic Planning and Career and Life Coaching. Don’t forget to RSVP for this month’s meeting! (547-9755 or via e-mail at [email protected].)

FEBRUARY 2009

If you’re interested in joining the TCLC’s trip to Olympia, they’d love to have you along. To find out more contact the Pasco Chamber of Commerce at 547-9755.

The Legislative Council consists of representatives from the Pasco, Hispanic, West Richland and Tri-Cities Regional Chambers of Commerce and from TRIDEC and the Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau. Council members meet ahead of time to decide which issues to tackle. By the time they head to Olympia, positions (and position papers) are distributed, to make sure that group members are all on the same page.

The just-completed 2009 Ag Show was well-attended and the Ag Hall of Fame banquet—this year, a part of the Ag Show— was sold out. Hall of Fame inductees included the late State Representative Steve Hailey, and Franklin County pioneer farmers Leonard and Marilyn Hanses and Edwin and Jane Danz. Each had an important role in the development of our strong agricultural heritage. Thanks to the committee members, volunteers, sponsors, vendors, chamber staff and Debbie and Cathleen with Wahoo Events, who all worked hard to make these events so successful!

We look forward to continued success through the year as your chamber continues to look for new ways to add real value to your membership. Please call or stop by the chamber office with any ideas or suggestions you might have. And remember to join us at this year’s monthly luncheons or Building Bridges Networking Events. Finally, mark your calendar now for “Swirl After Sunset,” this year’s Pasco Chamber of Commerce fundraising auction event. It’s set for May 2nd at Preston Premium Wines—and I’ll see you there!
