The June Chamber Luncheon: Pasco City Manager, Gary Crutchfield

The Pasco Farmer’s Market recently kicked off another summer of fresh produce and unique handcrafts. Through Halloween of this year, the open-air market at 4th and Columbia in downtown will fill up with food and fun every Wednesday and Saturday from 8AM to Noon. According to the chart available at www.pascofarmersmarket.org, most vegetables are already in season, though tomatoes look to be another month out. Berries and some fruits will come in later in the summer and apples are due around Labor Day. Non-produce items expected to make an appearance include flowers and plants, handcrafts and specialty foods such as honey, breads, pastries, spices and so forth.

On Monday, June 8th, the Pasco Chamber of Commerce will hold it's monthly luncheon at the Pasco Red Lion Inn. Pasco City Manager Gary Crutchfield is scheduled to speak on progress the city is making toward its 2009 goals. To RSVP, call 547-9755 or send a note to rsvp@pasco chamber.org.

JUNE 2009

In addition to the impromptu retail, there will be music at the market this summer. The Miss Tri-Cities contestants are scheduled for June 13th and various collections of folk, bluegrass, and even (seriously) belly dancing will make an appearance on other weekends. This year’s Grand Old Fourth Celebration takes place on...July 3rd, of course. (Yes, and 4th.) As in previous years the traditional Independence Day parade and fireworks are complemented by a pancake breakfast, car shows and other family entertainment.

Coming up this autumn—September 12th and 13th, specifically—another Pasco Downtown Development Association project, the 25th Annual Fiery Foods Festival, will happen in and around downtown Pasco. To learn more about the festival, look online at www.pascofieryfoods.com. To find out more about the Pasco Farmers Market or this year’s Fiery Foods Festival, call 545-0738 or visit them on the world wide web at the addresses listed above. For more on the Grand Old Fourth, call Pasco’s Recreation Services Department at 545-3456.

Help Grant Nathan’s Wish...

Ryan Brault, President Pasco Chamber of Commerce

...and this year the Tri-Cities Small Business of the Year is...

On June 11 from 6-9PM, Wishing Star will hold a fundraising dinner at the Richland Red Lion. The money raised will be used to grant Nathan, a 7-year-old Pasco boy with Cystic Fibrosis, his wish to go to Disneyland. Tickets are $50 and can be reserved by calling 375-5475.

Again this year your Pasco Chamber of Commerce joined with other members of the Three Rivers Alliance of Chambers to present the Tri-Cities’ 14th Annual Small Business Awards banquet. Among the nominees were a handful of Pasco businesses, including international contractor Randolph Construction Services, last month’s Swirl Into Sunset host Preston Premium Wines, professional services consultant Harms Engineering, housing and elder-care provider From the Heart and HR management/contractor Indian Eyes, LLC.

At the end of the evening this year’s winner was announced...and it was Pasco Chamber member Randolph Construction. The company—a Silver Award winner last year—is owned by Khristina Judy and Lori Cook, and was already this year honored as the US Small Business Administration’s Region X Prime Contractor of the Year! My congratulations to Randolph Construction and thanks to all of you who represent small business in Pasco and Franklin County.

When It R ains...It Pours! Swirl Into Sunset wasn’t quite what we imagined. We pictured a beautiful night, lovely grounds at Preston Premium Wines, a warm evening, excellent entertainment, wine, food and fun. If you were there, you know that we had pouring rain and wild wind. Yet many people were still there, sticking it out to the end.

The week after Swirl, one member told me, “As long as you’re running the Chamber we’re sure to stay afloat.” Good humor and pats on the back make this worthwhile. Many of you take time to acknowledge the hard work that the board, committee members and volunteers put into events and that helps along about the time the rain and wind start...

Your Pasco Chamber seeks to fill four Board of Director positions this year. My hope is that the best of the best will step up to the challenge of leadership. It takes work to be a good board member. The commitment to attend (and participate in) regular monthly meetings, chamber functions AND board meetings is important, though we know not everyone can attend everything. The Board sets policies that guide the chamber in assisting local businesses and helping to develop the local economy. The 2008-2009 Board of Directors laid out a path to growth in Chamber membership that focuses on constantly/consistently increasing the value of services that we offer members. In doing so, the board has made possible an enormous turnaround. A track record of declining membership has been reversed. The board has honored the Chamber’s nearly hundred-year history, embraced the surprising present day and looks forward to an excellent future. And I thank each member of this board for their commitment to the Chamber and its mission. With all of that said, if you are a team member who enjoys building relationships, appreciates networking opportunities and would like to be more involved in the Pasco community, please fill out a nomination form or contact the Chamber office for more information. We’re looking for you!

A New Business Model for Small Farms? A few years ago, Alan Schreiber heard about something called “Community Supported Agriculture.” The idea was that farms would provide fresh, high-quality, locally-grown food to area consumers without a retail middleman. The business model was like a subscription—the customer periodically pays a set amount; the farmer delivers it. The Eltopia farmer (Schreiber and Sons, “It’s better by 1000 miles”) started in 2006, with just eight members. In 2007, they fed families over a 25 week period. The produce-as-it’s-harvested service is now offered between the first week of May and late November. Either conventionally or organically farmed vegetables are offered. And 95% of the produce delivered is grown on the Schreiber family farm. To find out more, look online: www.schreiberandsons.com or call 266-4348.
