Fair: Time to ‘Celebrate’ Could this be the greatest Douglas County Fair ever? Your county fair is gearing up to be one of the finest and the most celebratory five days in Douglas County Harold Phillips and boy, can we fairgrounds use it! manager “Celebrate What’s Great” at the fair is a big birthday bash for

Oregon’s 150th birthday. The excitement is building for the candles to be lit — or should we say, for the lasers to be lit! Every night we’ll be ending the fair with an outdoor laser light and dance production that is sure to have your eyes dancing to the lights and music. It will be a time when we celebrate our great state’s birth and how Douglas County made its mark. Like its deep traditional agriculture base, 4-H and FFA, fair entertainment, food and carnival rides, the fair is also where new and old friends are found. Join us and “Celebrate What’s Great!”

Free buses will run to fair The News-Review There’s no reason to drive to the Douglas County Fair when free rides are offered from throughout Roseburg and Green. At the same time, Umpqua Transit will offer free rides on all of its regular route buses during fair week, today through Friday. Umpqua Transit does not operate on weekends. The transit buses can be used to hook up with the fair park-n-ride lots at Roseburg High School, the Douglas County Courthouse, Kmart on Stewart Parkway and the Dixon Steel lot on Diamond Lake Boulevard. Another fair parking lot is located at the old Starlight Theater near Ingram Book Co. on Grant Smith Road. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, the fair shuttle buses will run back and forth between the fairgrounds and the five parking lots every 30 minutes. From 5 to 11 p.m. on those days, the buses will shuttle every 15 minutes. On Saturday, buses will leave the fairgrounds and the parking lots every 15 min-

Laser light show adds to nightly fair ambiance people with something that’s pretty neat,” Phillips said. Neither a parade nor a fireworks display, which is also a trademark for the Disney parks in Florida and California, seemed feasible. JOHN SOWELL The News-Review Two years after the successful opening of the Teen Zone, this week’s Douglas County Fair debuts another innovation that officials hope will entice fairgoers to stay later into the evening — a laser light show. The show will take place after each night’s concert and during the fair’s Saturday night finale. “We think it’s going to be pretty exciting,” Fairgrounds Director Harold Phillips said. After the concerts end, a lot of people leave the fairgrounds and go home. Phillips believes the show will give folks a reason to stay longer. Phillips came up with the idea after attending a November conference hosted by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. During the convention, Phillips was given a behindthe-scenes tour of the staging area used at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., for a light parade that features Disney characters and dozens of floats covered with miniature lights. Phillips was impressed with the setup

Touring hypnotist to add humor to fair CARAPALLONE The News-Review Seventeen years ago, hypnotist Terrance Ballinger picked up a book titled “The Power of the Subconscious Mind.” He said during a phone interview recently, while touring with his wife, Julie Ballinger, in Alberta, Canada, that he started reading the book to address his own personal needs and to learn to make positive

changes in his life. He started practicing hypnosis as a parlor trick, he said, at friends’ houses and parties. The former hotel manager began training with a fellow he met who was already performing his own hypnotic shows. Before long, Ballinger was also performing his own shows. His mentor encouraged him to follow stage life full time and as simple as that, Ballinger made the transition from hospitality to hypnosis.

Terrance Ballinger has been putting people into trances for 15 years. “What I had been studying so far was about making positive changes in your life to move forward,” Ballinger said. “With that in my head, I decided to do it full time and 15 years later, I’m still doing it and loving life.” Today, the 49-year-old, British-born

Ballinger tours year-round, spending six months in Canada and six months in the United States. He met Julie on the road eight years ago and the two live in a 40-foot tour bus with their two dogs, who are also included in his shows. Performing under the stage name Terrance B, he and Julie book about 200 gigs a year. They usually have weeklong breaks in between shows during which they sightsee or play golf, Ballinger said. “Our backyard garden changes every week. Sometimes we get to park on the beach, we’ve been in the Rocky Mountains and the Smoky Mountains,” he said. “We love to travel and we love to visit.” A certified hypnotherapist, Ballinger uses his power of suggestion to guide audience members through humorous scenarios. Most recently, a Backstreet Boys revival or a Lady Gaga appearance have been fair favorites. He said he and his wife have more than seven hours of family-friendly material, which they perform at county and state fairs, universities, colleges or small corporate shows. “If you come to one show and come to another you’ll see completely different show,” he said.

Following a short introduction, the laser light show would begin and last for 15 to 20 minutes, he said. The show would conclude with a release of confetti. “It’s our intention to leave people with an ‘awe’ feeling,” Phillips said.

this week. The fair concerts open with sassy songstress Gretchen Wilson performing at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Huey Lewis and the News will fill the entertainment slot on Wednesday and country crooner Josh Turner will follow Huey’s lead with a show on Thursday. Molly Hatchet completes the lineup with a performance on Friday. The theme of the fair is “Celebrate What’s Great! Oregon’s Birthday Bash.” Wilson won a Grammy Award in 2005 for her No. 1 hit, “Redneck Woman.” Her debut album, “Here For The Party,” sold more than 5 million copies and her second CD, “All Jacked Up” reached platinum status. Other hits of the former bartender include “When I Think About Cheatin’” and “One of the Boys.” Wilson’s sophomore album “Your Man” was one of four country albums to reach double-platinum status in 2006. I think that’s what makes music real.” His most recent album release is titled “Everything is Fine.” Fairgrounds Director Harold Phillips said Huey Lewis and the News will add to the celebratory tone of the fair this year as the band embarks on its 30th anniversary tour. In 1979, Huey Lewis had a band and a recording contract, but no name. Originally, the group was called Huey Lewis and the American Express, according to the band’s Web site. The album went multiplatinum in 1979 and the Southern rock group followed up with another platinum record, “Beatin’ the Odds,” in 1980. Phillips said he thought Molly Hatchet would be a hit in Douglas County because of the band’s country/rock roots. “I think it’s a very good balanced group of artists that will be here at our fair,” said Phillips. “It will definitely be an opportunity for people to enjoy great music.” Phillips said at the end of July that Huey Lewis and the News was leading the pack in ticket sales and that the group was catching up to the number of tickets that were sold for Poison in 2007, which totaled 994. FAIR

Fairgrounds details smoking, seat restrictions JOHN SOWELL The News-Review Smokers attending this week’s Douglas County Fair will have to scope out new places to light up as the fair bans smoking in the carnival area, in the seating area at the concert amphitheater and in the grandstands at the raceway. At the same time, the fair will tighten its concert seating policy for people looking to save the first-come, first-served seats for themselves and their friends. Under a new policy, the general admission seats won’t be available for grabbing until 4 p.m. on the day of the show. The policy only applies to the fair’s folding chairs placed behind the reserved sections. Blankets or other personal items can still be used to save seats in the bleachers and in the grassy areas along the perimeter of the amphitheater. Harold Phillips, the fairgrounds director, said he and his staff want to enhance the fair experience for children and nonsmokers while still allowing smokers to have a puff. “We want to get smoking out of the congested areas and we think everyone will support that,” Phillips said. “We want to

make things comfortable for everyone.” State law already prohibits smoking in public buildings. And for safety reasons, it has been banned for many years in the agricultural barns. There has also been a prohibition in the Teen Zone area created two years ago; the new ban will also apply to the food court area. Fairgoers will still be able to smoke inside the main gate and in other open areas leading between buildings and other fair locations and along the perimeter of the amphitheater area. A dedicated smoking area will also be established at the edge of the carnival area. The fairgrounds has always prohibited people from laying blankets across the fair’s general admission concert seats early in the morning and holding them all day, Phillips said. Only four seats could be held at a time and someone had to remain with the seats until showtime. That policy wasn’t strictly enforced, Phillips said, and it led to people placing blankets, shirts or other items on seats and then leaving for the day and coming back a few minutes before the concert began. “Everyone has this (Music on the) Half Shell mentality: If I leave a blanket, there I

be,” Phillips said. This week, no seats can be held before 4 p.m. and the fair will require at least one person to stay with the four seats. Last year, the fair began checking fairgoers’ bags to prevent alcohol from being brought into the fair. That policy helped, Phillips said, and will be continued this week. The fair will also continue to require patrons to wear shirts, another policy enacted last year.

Teen Zone back for third year The News-Review The Teen Zone will again be stationed near the southeast corner of Douglas Hall at this year’s Douglas County Fair. Featuring video games and live entertainment by musicians, a hypnotist and a disc jockey, teens of all ages are welcome to enjoy the zone’s free activities. FAIR

4-H, FFA members ready to show off entries The News-Review Several hundred 4-H and FFA projects will be concluded this week when young members bring their animals and exhibits to the 2009 Douglas County Fair. The projects, developed by members in fourth through 12th grades, will be shown and judged throughout the five-day fair. There are about 250 4-H clubs in Douglas County with a total membership of about 750 youngsters. FFA clubs are at Roseburg, Sutherlin, Glide, Oakland, Days Creek and Elkton high schools. “I envision the fair as being the showcase event, where all the youth involved can display their work,” said Tracy Martz, 4-H youth development agent at the Oregon State University Extension Service’s Roseburg office. “It’s also a great opportunity for these kids to educate the public about their projects. “The goal of 4-H is to develop youth with good skills, lifelong skills that will help them be productive and successful adults,” she added. The most entries will be in the swine class. There are 168 youth who will bring a market pig to fair, and there’ll also be some sows with their litters of piglets. The beef animal class will have 68 entries.

The market swine and beef will be showcased at 7 p.m. Friday with the annual Rotary Junior Market Auction. “Even in these economic times, people who support the youth programs are still coming and supporting the kids,” Martz said of those who bid and buy at the auction. “The lamb show in June was pretty successful with the auction prices being only a few cents lower than past years.” Other animal entries will be 132 sheep, 39 goats, 15 dairy cattle, 66 horses, 41 dogs

and 144 entries in cavies (hamsters and guinea pigs), rabbits and poultry classes. Food exhibits will number about 160. There’ll be 108 entries in clothing, fashion review and fiber art and there’ll be five flower and crop exhibits. Other projects that will be displayed include photography, art, mechanic science, leatherworking, woodworking, computer design, sewing, Lego robotics, forestry and geology. There’ll be about 420 kids who enter their work in these categories.
