Building Strong Bones DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a woman in her mid-40s with significant bone loss (osteopenia). I was completely unaware that bone loss can occur in premenopausal women. I was stunned by my poor bone-density score. Why doesn’t the medical community inform the public that bone loss can be an issue for premenopausal women? -- E.M. ANSWER: Osteoporosis happens mainly to women after menopause, when there is a sudden and precipitous drop in their production of estrogen, the female hormone that works to preserve bone health. However, women attain their peak bone strength in their late 20s and early 30s. From that time on, bones begin to lose their calcium and become more fragile and prone to fracture. Osteoporosis can occur at younger ages. You don’t have osteoporosis. You have osteopenia. It’s a marker on the road to osteoporosis. At young ages, girls should be on a program of building a bank deposit of calcium and strong bones by meeting the daily requirements for calcium and vitamin D, and by not doing things that lead to bone demineralization, like smoking. The free hour-long presentations, at noon and 6 p.m., will each be held in Room B that’s located on the third floor of the Human Resource Center and can be accessed by the East Wing elevator. These talks are sponsored by BRMC’s Wellness Committee. Mr. Willoughby will detail his personal journey of how he once weighed a life-threatening 799 pounds but managed to shed 550 pounds through improved eating habits and regular exercise. Also, BRMC psychologist Mary Anne Polucci-Sherman will discuss the clinical aspects of disordered eating. “Justin’s achievement is a powerful story of someone who regained his life through effort, learning to eat properly and adopting a regimen of exercise. His talk will certainly prove to be educational and a motivating force for anyone who attends,” said Mariann Kahle, BRMC’s worksite wellness coordinator. “What Justin was able to accomplish was all the more remarkable when you consider he did it without any surgery.

He simply made better food choices and aided that by burning calories through increased physical activity,” Mrs. Kahle said. “I want to inspire people to find hope in their situations,” said Mr. Willoughby. Meanwhile, Mrs. Polucci-Sherman will look at what she calls “the insidious nature of addiction and discuss the side effects and symptoms of disordered eating.” If time allows, there will be a question-and-answer period for those attending. THE FIRST CONFIRMED CASE OF INFLUENZA A (H1N1) IN POTTER COUNTY HAS BEEN REPORTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH. The patient was tested at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and has recovered at home. CCMH will continue its efforts to protect patients and staff. Anyone visiting the hospital should inform a staff member immediately if they exhibit flu-like symptoms. While CCMH has been preparing for the potential of a flu pandemic for quite some time, the hospital is following recommendations from local emergency management officials, the Center for Disease Control and World Health Organization. “We encourage people to remain calm and take time to learn about this virus, especially what you should do if you have symptoms,” said John Hetrick, deployment coordinator, Potter County Emergency Management Agency. Symptoms of swine flu are similar to the seasonal flu and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, and coughing. While there is currently no vaccine available, the swine flu can be treated with certain antiviral drugs. Call your medical provider if you think you have the flu. To view the live feed, visit the agency’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) and click on the “Bluebird Live-Feed” icon in the center of the homepage. “The best way to get Pennsylvanians - in fact most Americans - excited about wildlife is to show them what makes wildlife so irreplaceable and priceless,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “We decided to set-up and use this live video camera feed to help us educate the public about the importance of wildlife, how to make backyards friendlier to wildlife and also provide a way for folks to simply get closer to bluebirds. So far, it’s been a huge hit in our lobby, where a television showcases the live feed, and now on our website.” The bluebird camera is the agency’s first foray into the world of live nest cam feeds. It provides a color video feed plus audio from the bluebird nestbox quarters. The box is directly behind the agency’s headquarters. Power to the camera is run through buried conduit. The conduit also houses the cables that deliver the audio and video signal to an AV splitter before being sent to the editing computer of Eric Miller, an agency wildlife education specialist, who designed the system and worked with the agency’s maintenance crew - Dusty Mitchell and Cory Smith to construct it. Call 585593-6322. pb WPSU-TV CANCELS PROGRAMMING AND REDUCES STAFF IN RESPONSE TO FISCAL PRESSURES High school quiz show “Scholastic Scrimmage” among cuts University Park, PA (June 24, 2009) - Following a thorough examination of the staffing and organizational structure, WPSU has made the difficult decision to cancel two television programs and eliminate eight staff positions today. “Scholastic Scrimmage,” a quiz show featuring the best and brightest from central Pennsylvania high schools and “Common Ground Lobby Talks,” a community-oriented show featuring Penn State faculty and audience participation, will be cancelled. “Obviously we are very disappointed that we must take this action,” said Ted Krichels, associate vice president for Penn State Outreach and general manager of WPSU. “Given the current economic climate, we concluded that we must significantly reduce expenses without sacrificing the ability to create and distribute compelling content.” “Every budget line item and service has been examined for efficiencies resulting in a reorganization, new processes, and substantial reductions in expenses. The reduction of staff is a last, but now necessary, resort,” added Krichels. WPSU staff impacted by these actions will be offered a variety of career services to assist them in finding new employment. On Wednesday, Feb. 4, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell sent a proposed budget to the state House and Senate that recommends eliminating all funding for the eight public television stations in Pennsylvania. The proposed budget would eliminate all funding for station operations ($7.9 million). The potential funding loss for WPSU totals about $850,000. “While the potential loss of state funding poses the most severe and immediate challenge, we must also confront the potential reduction of other revenue sources,” said Krichels. Those include community support and production revenue. “We intend to do everything we can to make sure that WPSU remains a strong and viable public service media organization that continues to be a vital part of people’s lives as we strengthen our ability to generate revenue through the production and distribution of compelling and useful content,” said Krichels. “Scholastic Scrimmage” was a fast-paced question and answer game featuring students from 90 central Pennsylvania high schools in three 30-team divisions. In each match, two teams competed to showcase their knowledge, recall, and reflexes as they attempted to advance to their divisional championship. “Scholastic Scrimmage” recently completed its 6th season. “Common Ground Lobby Talks” was a series that invited the public to participate in a forum with Penn State faculty and special guests. Taped in the lobby of the WPSU studios, the show welcomed audience participation in the form of questions and comments. Among the issues covered in its 4th season were autism, gender equity in education, Marcellus Shale, toxic chemicals in consumer products, universal health care, and the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Penn State Public Broadcasting is part of Penn State Outreach. CCMH STARTS SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING Charles Cole Memorial Hospital began a “single stream” recycling program with Casella Waste Systems recently. This recycling program is a little bit different whereas all of the recyclable items such as newspaper, phone books, cardboard, plastics, glass and aluminum, can be put together into one recycling container. On Wednesday, June 24, 2009 a group of cyclists from the Bike & Build organization stopped by the Smethport Senior Center for an ice cream treat. Bike & Build organizes cross-country bicycle trips which benefit affordable housing groups. Specifically, they fund projects planned and executed by young adults. They have donated $1, 643,145 in the past 6 seasons, and have pedaled over, 3.1MM miles, spreading the word about the affordable housing crisis in America.

Proceeds from the fourth annual tournament benefit Helping Hands Retreat, a free children’s bereavement camp, held Aug. 14-16, at Camp Penuel in Eldred. The camp, where registration is still under way, is for children between age 8 and 12 who experienced a loss in their young life. It’s hosted by staff from Bradford Regional Medical Center’s (BRMC) McKean County VNA & Hospice. “This is the fourth year we and Bradford Hospital Foundation have held the Pro-Am For Kids tournament and it’s been very well received by our membership, the pros and other golfers. It’s a premier event,” says Kirk Stauffer, Pine Acres golf pro. Despite what’s occurred in the economy, “We’ve managed to get repeat sponsors for the tournament,” Mr. Stauffer says. Still, anyone who wants to be a non-competing tournament sponsor can contact Mr. Stauffer at Pine Acres at 814-362-2005, e-mail [email protected] or call the Foundation at 814-362-3200. Each tournament team will be comprised of one professional golfer from the Western New York PGA Section and three amateurs. Proceeds from the field of 120 golfers will benefit the bereavement camp, say tournament organizers. In the first three years the Pro-Am For Kids has been held, “The tournament has raised over $10,000 for the camp,” Mr. Stauffer notes. The Foundation couldn’t be more pleased with how the charity tournament has evolved to benefit the camp. “We’re very appreciative of Kirk’s efforts to work with us on this tournament. It’s a great way to support children in our community who are grieving over a loss,” says Stephanie Huber, the Foundation’s Director of Donor Systems and Special Events. “This worthwhile tournament has grown in popularity because people love to help children,” Mrs. Huber adds. “It’s a great way to have fun and give support to benefit the kids and the camp.” Pine Acres and the Foundation joined efforts when Mr. Stauffer wanted to support a charity that would benefit children at a local camp. “It was easy for us to want to be involved with a charity like this that’s a win-win for everyone,” Mr. Stauffer explains. PA CLEANWAYS PLANS TIRE COLLECTION IN BRADFORD PA CleanWays of McKean County is sponsoring a tire collection day Saturday, August 1, 2009, from 8:00am to Noon at the Edmond Chevrolet Parking Lot at the corner of South Avenue and Songbird Lane. This will be the only tire recycling event held in McKean County this year. McKean County Residents can dispose of car or light duty truck tires for $0.75 per tire. In addition, due to many requests, residents can dispose of tractor trailer type truck tires for the first time at this event for $2.00 per tire. The tires can have the rims on or off. Tires are to be brought to the Edmond Chevrolet Parking Lot on Saturday, August 1, 2009, only. Participants must preregister and pre-pay at the McKean Extension Office in Smethport (814-887-5613). This project is paid for by a grant secured by PA CleanWays of McKean from the PA Department of Environmental Protection. Extension Educator, Jim Clark, stated, “We have room for 2,400 car or light duty truck tires and 1,000 truck tires. If you are not on the list you will be turned away, so people need to be sure and call. The collection will be held on a first registered, first served, basis. This is a one day event only.” The tires are being recycled by Mahantango Enterprises Inc. of Liverpool, PA. Additional volunteers for the event are still needed and encouraged to call the McKean County Extension Office to receive directions and register to help. The chapter has found that tires are a major problem as they work to clean up illegal dumps in the county. Tires are also the number one breeding site of mosquitoes, which can be a possible health problem, if they carry West Nile Virus.
