NOTICE As you know, we run many reader ads for government auctions, job positions, earn money at home, cash loans, credit cards, etc. Most of these ads come through state and national ad networks. Most of them are selling directories or listings of where to APPLY FOR what is advertised. This information may be available at less cost elsewhere. While these ads are screened where possible, we have no way of verifying the authenticity of their claims or the value of their product. The buying decision must be yours. If you have problems with any of these advertisers, please let us know and we will attempt to get you a refund. Most of the companies we have checked will refund their fees to unsatisfied customers. Read the ads carefully. Some charge a fee, as noted in the ad, directly to your phone bill when you call them. Once again, we can’t verify claims for every ad. Please consider their offer and make a voluntary and reasonable buying decision. Moneysaver Advertising, Inc.

CONCORD, N.C. -- Jeff Gordon, who will turn 38 in August, remains remarkably youthful. It is, however, misleading, as apparent youth often is. “I’ve always said, as a race-car driver, that you never stop learning ... ever,” Gordon says. Gordon is one of those athletes about whom the phrase “forever young” seems appropriate. His voice remains that of a teenager, still etched in wonder even as the words coming from his mouth evoke experience and maturity. Earlier this season, Gordon won the 82nd race of his career. Only five drivers -- Richard Petty (200), David Pearson (105), Bobby Allison (84), Darrell Waltrip (84) and Cale Yarborough (83) -- have won more. Only two, Petty and

Gordon won officially for the first time in the Coca-Cola 600 on May 29, 1994, almost 15 years ago. “I was thrilled to get my first win here,” he said of the track. “The first time I came down to Charlotte to drive a stock car was out in Rockingham at Buck Baker Driving School, and I remember driving by the speedway, wanting to see the speedway, and I was just blown away by this place. Then, getting a chance to drive a car here for the first time, I just fell in love with it from day one. “It’s pretty ironic to me and blew me away that I got my first Cup win at this race track, especially in such a big event like the 600.” In retrospect, that victory was a prophecy. It foretold greatness. Truth is, it wasn’t that much of a surprise at the time. Gordon had already been declared a boy wonder, which is why, much to the chagrin of Ray Evernham (his crew chief at the time), fans and journalists began referring to him as Wonder Boy. Gordon, who was born in Vallejo, Calif., but served his racer’s apprenticeship in Pittsboro, Ind., is now an aging superhero. It wouldn’t be surprising given his

Dave Albney and Dale Southard hold the sign from the former Dale’s Barber Shop. This sign is one of the few things which survived the April 5, 2009 fire that destroyed the building. Southard, owner of Dale’s Barber Shop, recently broke ground for construction of a new barber shop at the same location, Main St., Eldred, Pa. Construction is being done by Dave Albney and Troy Fitzsimmons Construction. S.M. Zona Construction will complete the heating, plumbing and electrical work. The anticipated date of opening is August 1.
COMMONWEALTH SPEAKER BRUCE YOUNG TO SHARE TRADITIONAL MUSIC OF THE PENNSYLVANIA MOUNTAINS The McKean County Historical Society will host the Commonwealth Speaker Bruce Young’s presentation “Pennsylvania Mountain Voices” at their Old Jail Lecture Hall, 502 West King Street in Smethport, PA on Thursday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. The program is free and open to the public. This presentation seeks to evoke through song and music the lives and times of people living and working in nineteenth century Pennsylvania. Banjo, fiddle, guitar and dulcimer music will accompany the songs, most of which have choruses and are meant to be sung by a group of people. As a result of Mr. Young’s research on the songs collected by Henry W. Shoemaker at the turn of the last century, the program has a particular emphasis on songs of Central Pennsylvania mining and lumber camps of the nineteenth century. The music will also touch on changes in transportation modes through history and the Industrial Revolution and how those changes affected rural Central Pennsylvania communities and people. The music and songs come from a time and place in history and provide a lively window to view, in their own words, the people who wrote them and their lives and times. Bruce Young is a folk artist specializing in traditional fiddle and dance styles. His expertise is the result of fourteen years of classical training followed by thirty years of folk music performance. He became involved in square dance music in 1974, playing fundraisers for the Penn State Folklore Society. He then played fiddle for Tyrone, PA square dance caller, Bob Irvin, and his band, The Hilltoppers. After nine years, The Hilltoppers broke up and Mr. Young became a freelance fiddler/ vocalist. In 1986 his trio was hired to perform English Country Dance music at The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. In 1991 he studied calling, or prompting, of Contra and English Country Dances at an Augusta Heritage Week at Davis and Elkins College. That year he began the study of Suzuki violin pedagogy at Ms. Rhonda Cole’s Institute at Catholic University of America to better serve his growing teaching studio. Leaving the Faire in 1995, Mr. Young continues to play for and call at public dances across Pennsylvania with different bands and to teach in his studio, Fiddle Fantastick. Pennsylvania Mountain Voices is a presentation funded by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, and is supported in part by Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania. The PHC, a nonprofit organization, inspires individuals to enjoy and share a life of learning. In its continued effort to share information with the community regarding our local history, the McKean County Historical Society is honored to host this evening of traditional music and songs of the Pennsylvania Mountains.
From left, are Wanda Hemphill, Bonnie Reed, Becky Mingo, and Dolores Gartside. Not pictured is Alana Burdick. They reached milestone hours this year. fb STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver • In Arkansas it is illegal to mispronounce the name of the state. (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Karen Wolf of Sweden Township has a variety of artwork on display at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital’s Irwin Medical Arts Center as part of the hospital’s Community Art Showcase. Wolf, who will have rotating work displayed in June and July, works primarily with acrylic and oil. Her subject matter comes mostly from her own photos and wildlife reference material. She also enjoys wildlife, nature, pet portraits and has started doing children’s portraits. She became interested in art at an early age. Her grandmother, her first art teacher, was a major influence. Wolf studied art in high school and college and attended the Baum Art School in Allentown and Kutztown University. In college, she suffered a serious eye injury and had to leave her studies. Moving to Potter County four years ago inspired her, and she has been painting ever since. She has also taken instruction from local artist Linda Rohrer. She is married and has two children and one grandchild. The project has featured artists Pat Bosworth of Port Allegany, Alyson Leach, Leslie Kelley, and Suzan Richar of Galeton, Naomi Keller, Heather Chilson, and Lindsey Francis of Coudersport, and Mercedes Schwartz of Smethport, according to chairperson Betty Wei. Artists are featured for about six to eight weeks. “It’s a way for area residents to enjoy the talent and creativity of local artists and the hospital family is thrilled to make this opportunity possible,” she said. For more information on the Community Art Showcase, contact Wei at 814-274-7910. fb THE BOLIVAR LIONESS CLUB IS COLLECTING used hearing aids for the Finger Lakes Region Lion’s Hearing Foundation. 4-H GOES TO SPACE! Washington, June 11, 2009 USDAs National 4-H Headquarters and NASA will send the 4-H flag, depicting the familiar 4-H Clover, into space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on June 13, 2009, as part of the STS-127 mission. The inclusion of the 4-H flag on this mission is reflective of the commitment 4-H has to building young leaders in science, engineering and technology, said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. As the global economy expands, these leaders will strengthen the United States’ global competitiveness and
leadership in these fields. 4-H promotes positive youth development, facilitates learning and engages youth in the work of the land-grant universities and USDA to enhance their quality of life. Nearly 7 million youth, ages 5-19, participate in 4-H youth development experiences in all 50 states, territories and military installations worldwide. The STS-127 mission will deliver the final components of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Kibo laboratory to the International Space Station. The 16-day mission will include five space walks and the installation of two platforms outside of the Japanese module. Azeem Ahmed, 17, who is an avid space enthusiast and 4-H member from Alabama and President of the Alabama 4-H Council, made the original request to NASA to have the flag flown with a future space shuttle mission. 4-H is more than green and white it is a collage, Ahmed said. It is agriculture and its also healthy living, leadership and citizenship and science, engineering and technology. Science, engineering and technology is one of the missions of 4H, and by flying a 4-H flag into space, I hope we shine a new light on 4-H. Ahmed has been a 4-H member for seven years. He has participated in a variety of leadership and science, engineer and technology programs on the state and national level and wants people to see 4-H as he and thousands of other youth do. The 4-H Youth Development Program began at the start of the 20th century to help rural youth gain technical and leadership skills. More than 100 years later, the organization continues to promote positive youth development in the areas of citizenship; healthy living and science; engineering; and technology. According to a two-year study in New York, young people who participate in 4-H clubs do better in school, are more motivated to help others, develop skills in leadership, public speaking, self-esteem, communication and planning and make lasting friendships. National 4-H Headquarters, along with its private partner National 4-H Council, has set the goal of preparing one million new young people to excel in science, engineering and technology (SET) by 2013. National 4-H Headquarters seeks to promote positive youth development, facilitate learning and engage youth in the work of the land-grant universities and USDA to enhance their quality of life. They are getting their rabbits and goats ready for the big day. Also, they are getting their projects ready too. The Cloverbuds are making pillows and art work. They’re very busy getting ready for the parade in Bolivar, New York, trying to get more kids to join 4-H and have fun. Catch the kid’s booth that the moms put together for Portville Days, July 11th. Hope you stop in to see the bunnies and guinea pigs, maybe a baby goat on that day too. We would like to thank Katrina Adams for making the baskets and all her help with this group. Thanks to all the kids for hopping in our group. After the ACR completed their review of the submitted information Jones was awarded

“Medicare and other payers have enacted reimbursement policies that may require accreditation in the near future,” she added. “Achieving ACR accreditation demonstrates our commitment to quality patient care. Patients and physicians can be confident that the CT scans done at Jones Memorial will meet national standards.” For more information, contact Mrs. Walker at (585) 5964013. The Medical Imaging CT Staff, including, from left, Kelly Cavagna, Katie Ford, Aimee Vallieres and Carrie Walker, was recently awarded national accreditation by the American College of Radiology. f
FRIENDS OF THE PORTVILLE LIBRARY by Terri Batt Two teary-eyed little girls, aged 5 and 4 sat at the kitchen table under the stern scrutiny of their frustrated mother. “What do I have to do to get it through your heads that I mean what I say?” The children put their heads together for a minute and then answered their mom, “You can ground us, spank us, take away the TV or our dolls, anything...but please, don’t take away our books!” Many years have passed since my sister and I delivered that speech to our mother. I still love my books as do my four children. In fact, even my kids would rather read than watch TV for any length of time. Our love of books is just one of the reasons why we became “Friends of the Portville Library.” The “Friends” have been organized for almost 20 years and have grown from a handful of concerned people to over a hundred supporting families. As a group we meet every month on the second Monday to discuss business and activities to generate interest and income to benefit the Library. In a time of economic recession we have all had to ‘tighten the belt’ in one or more areas of our lives. The Portville Free Library has had to do the same since they receive very little in outside revenues. There have been hours shaved back and staff cuts made, all totaling up to be a possible inconvenience to a library patron with a free Saturday. Portville Free Library’s hours are: Monday and Thursday 18pm; Tuesday 10am-5pm; Closed on Wednesday; and Friday 9am-5pm. To aid the Library, the Friends have held Fall Festivals, Election Day pie sales, Valentine’s Day candy sales, and book sales in the community room during these and during the Heritage Day event in July. The monies raised are used for projects that are outside of the annual Library’s budget: new carpeting throughout the upstairs, ceiling repair, outside painting, new computers, financial assistance for the new wheelchair lift, just to name a few. To keep the standard of quality that the Portville Free Library has, we, as a group, need to band together and get involved, whether in volunteering time or through monetary donations. The Friends need you. As the mother of four avid readers, I encourage you to get behind the Friends of the Portville Library. f ********* 2009 EARLY SEASON FIELD EVALUATION DAYS Cornell University Cooperative Extension Allegany/ Cattaraugus Counties is sponsoring the Early Season Field Evaluation Days workshops, June 17 and 18. accreditation for achieving high standards. “The evaluations are conducted by two board-certified radiologist and two medical physicists who are experts in the field,” Mrs. Walker said. “The ACR CT Accreditation Program has very strict criteria that we must pass to achieve the certification.” Another advantage to seeking accreditation, according to Mrs. Walker, is that the comprehensive report the ACR puts together about the facility may document a need for dedicated equipment, for continuing education, or for qualified personnel.
