Speed and ballhandling helped her to area-bests of 42 goals and 97 points — both school records. ... Named the state’s co-Class D Player of the Year with S.S. Seward goalie Alina Greiser. ... Had a goal and an assist in each of Edmeston’s stateplayoff victories, over Old Forge and Chazy. ... “Everybody sees her scoring goals, but she actually looked to pass more this year when she was double- and triple-teamed,” said Edmeston’s Melanie Mumbulo, The Daily Star’s Coach of the Year. ... Also a Daily Star first-team selection last season, when she scored 28 goals.

Helped Panthers to 14 shutouts and was named the outstanding goalie after Edmeston’s 2-2 tie against S.S. Seward in Class D state title game. ... Always well-positioned and surehanded, Johnson earned Second Team AllState honors in Class D. ... “She didn’t get a lot of credit during the year because she didn’t get a lot action, but I knew she would be solid once the postseason arrived,” Panthers coach Melanie Mumbulo said. ... In six postseason games, Johnson made 55 saves and allowed six goals.

Big reason co-Class D state champions allowed 13 goals over 24 games. ... Secondyear starter was one the fastest Panthers, using speed to thwart the opposition. ... Earned Daily Star top coaching honors for the second straight year, the first time that’s happened since Stamford coach Jeff Gearhart did it in 1994-95. ... Has guided the Panthers to a 41-3-3 record over past two seasons, including two Section Four Class D championships, two Tri-Valley League crowns and co-Class D state title this past season. ... State title was first for a girls program in Edmeston history ... Watched Panthers outscore their six postseason opponents, 10-4, after halftime. ... Has steered Edmeston’s girls basketball team to an unbeaten start this winter.

Led Yellowjackets with 16 goals and also had five assists. ... “She has great footwork and was really talented shooting from distance or close range,” OHS coach Jerry Mackey said. “She also handled our corner kicks, and for as many quality balls as she put in there, we left a few goals out there.” ... Also led OHS in goals last season, when she was a Daily Star second-teamer as a midfielder. ... “She drew a lot of attention,” said Mackey, adding she’s received interest from colleges but hasn’t decided if she wants to keep playing.

Skilled player who could operate in tight spaces with the ball and score or find teammates. ... Scored 14 goals and had a teamhigh seven assists after switching from forward to midfield for her senior season. ... “She gave us a ton of possession and skill in the midfield,” said OHS coach Jerry Mackey, whose team finished 10-6. “She was a good bridge between defense and offense.” ... Mackey said Division I programs UNC-Wilmington and New Jersey IT have expressed interest in Naito, a two-time Daily Star first-teamer.

Led Tri-Valley League East Division champion Patriots with 15 goals and eight assists. ... Assisted teammate Morgan VanAlstine’s goal against eventual co-Class D state champion Edmeston in 2-1 Tri-Valley League crossover final loss. ... “Courtney is a coach’s dream,” said Patriots coach Amy Garretson, whose team went 14-4. “Any coach would love to have her as a player. She’s just a very committed and dedicated athlete.” ... Also a standout basketball player. ... Oswego is among schools interested in VanBrink.

Third-year varsity player used considerable speed to thwart many scoring chances this season. ... “Ashley is like a rock for us in the back,” said Warriors coach Jody Gravelin, whose team capped a 13-3-3 season with a 31 loss to Marathon in the Section Four Class C final. “Obviously, she’s very fast and she can clear the ball with either foot. She prevented so many shots on goal.” ... Earned Second Team All-State honors in Class C. ... Track standout will go for third overall sectional championship in 100-meter hurdles this spring.

Scored 23 goals and had 13 assists as a sophomore, but an ACL injury to her left knee cut her junior season short. ... Returned for senior year and finished with 18 goals and 17 assists in helping the Warriors to 13-3-3 season. ... “She came back really strong,” Sidney coach Jody Gravelin said. “One of her best assets was her uncanny ability of laying the ball just out of the reach of defenders.” ... Gave Warriors 1-0 lead with 30-yard shot from right wing with 16 minutes left in 3-1 loss to Marathon in Section Four Class C final.

Role player as a sophomore and junior behind high-scoring duo of Brenna Campbell and Maria Arnot, Brigham became the go-to girl this season and didn’t disappoint. ... Led Wildcats with 25 goals and 11 assists. Finished third in area — behind Edmeston’s Kori Hamm and Davenport’s Chelsea Haight — with 61 points. ... “I said to her, ‘You’ve got to do a bulk of the scoring,’ and she rose to the occasion,” Milford coach Lorin Campbell said. ... Geneseo has expressed interest in Brigham.

During her five varsity seasons, Davenport reached four Section Four Class D finals, winning twice and tying eventual co-Class D state champion Edmeston, 0-0, this past year (Edmeston advanced to the state tournament in penalty-kick shootout). ... Will graduate as the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer with 134 goals, including 37 this past season, despite battling the digestive disorder Crohn’s disease. ... Threetime Daily Star first-teamer and an All-State First Team selection in Class D this past season. ... Will play soccer for Hamilton this fall.

Anchored a Davenport defense that permitted 14 goals in 21 games this season. ... “I always told her she was absolutely in charge back there and she did the job and took charge,” said Davenport coach Ray Preston, whose team had 12 shutouts, won the Delaware League title, earned the co-Section Four Class D title with Edmeston and finished 20-01. ... Scored five goals and had three assists from sweeper position. ... Basketball standout is averaging more than 20 points this season for unbeaten Wildcats.

Spent most of the early portion of the season marking opposing team’s top scorer, but switched to forward midway through and finished with 20 goals and five assists. ... “She brought extreme speed to our team,” said Downsville coach Burt Reed, whose team finished 12-4-2. “She was really quick with the ball on her feet. As she develops, she’s going to keep getting better.” ... Scored 19 goals over the Eagles’ final 10 games. ... “She kind of did a little bit of everything for us,” Reed said.

Led Bulldogs to school record of 20 consecutive victories en route to program’s first Section Four title, which came in his 14th season as head coach. ... Despite losing key players such as Alex Throssel and Zak Meehan — the older brother of 2008 Daily Star Player of the Year Avery Meehan — Delhi finished first in the Midstate Athletic Conference standings for the second straight year. ... After beating defending Section Four Class C champion Spencer-Van Etten in semifinal and Marathon in final, Bulldogs fell, 2-1, to Fabius-Pompey in state quarterfinal.

First Team All-State selection in Class C led area boys with school-record 34 goals. ... Also set all-time program record for goals with 97 in four seasons, which includes 30 as a junior. ... “He’s great with the ball, good in the air and good with both feet,” Delhi coach Brian Rolfe said of his captain. “He stepped up. He was a talking captain, a leader-by-example captain and a work-ethic captain. As the season progressed, if he said it, the team did it. He proved himself worthy of their respect.” ... Will travel to France as part of Section Four All-Star team in April. ... First-team selection last year.

Oneonta State graduate turned Mustangs into Tri-Valley League contenders after more than a decade of consecutive losing seasons. ... Led Morris to 3-13-2 finish in first season as head coach in 2007. ... After starting 2008 season 2-7-2, Morris went on nine-game unbeaten streak and finished a half-game behind T-V West Division champion Laurens. ... Lateseason run included sectional upsets of Windham (4-0) and Cherry Valley-Springfield (1-0) for 11th-seeded Mustangs, who bowed out of the Class D tournament with a 2-1 semifinal loss to Margaretville.

Offensive workhorse received Second Team All-State honor in Class C after helping Delhi to program-best 20-1 record and first Section Four crown. ... Scored 12 times but did most damage as set-up man as Midstate Athletic Conference First Team All-Star amassed 20 assists. ... “Ryan will work and work and work and he’ll run until he can’t run anymore,” Delhi coach Brian Rolfe said. “He’s the scrappiest player on our team. If he’s near the ball, he’s pretty good at scrapping for it and getting it. He would always be in the right spot.”

Third Team Class D All-State pick finished third in area scoring with 55 points, on 24 goals and seven assists. ... Always drew opponents’ top defenders yet still found the back of the net more often than not. ... “He was our go-to guy,” Margaretville coach Jeremey Marks said. “His speed and strength are huge assets in his game. He has the size to hold off defenders and the speed to pass them.” ... Helped Margaretville (16-5) to championship appearances in the Delaware League crossover and Section Four Class D Tournament.

Third Team All-State selection in Class D who excelled at center-midfield after spending two seasons as a defender. ... “I thought we needed a presence for the midfield,” Margaretville coach Jeremey Marks said, explaining why he moved Moore from sweeper to midfield early in 2008. “He’s a physical player and has skills in the air, so we needed him up there.” ... Delaware League First Team All-Star contributed nine goals and two assists but focused mainly on controlling tempo, ball placement and creating opportunities.

Second Team All-State in Class B earned all-Southern Tier Athletic Conference honors in the Central/East divisions. ... Returns to Daily Star First Team for third straight season. ... Anchored defense with nine shutouts for 9-7-1 Jackets. ... Captain rarely made errors between posts and works diligently year-round to improve skills. ... “He played for me for four years and did a great job,” OHS coach Alex Brannan said of Hayen, who’s looking to land at Division I Binghamton University. “He can play at that level. ... He has the right attitude . ”

Second Team All-State selection in Class D flourished in the open field and often forced opponents to extend their defenses. ... Finished with team-best 34 points on 12 goals and 10 assists for balanced Delaware League champion Rams, who won first Section Four title since 1968. ... “He’s sort of our glue at the center-mid position and he played hard there throughout the season,” SK coach Bob VanValkenburgh said. “He controlled the tempo of the game there.” ... Looking to play college soccer at Division III Castleton State in Vermont.

Second Team All-State pick in Class D helped solidify South Kortright during run to Delaware League and Section Four Class D championships. ... Speedy Delaware League First Team All-Star set up teammates as well as he finished opportunities as illustrated by his 10 assists and eight goals. ... Often worked sidelines to spread defenses, then used quick footskills to create 1-on-1 chances. ... “He was definitely one of the catalysts for our team,” said SK coach Bob VanValkenburgh, whose team finished 18-3-1.

Daily Star first-teamer in 2006 earned First Team All-State in Class D. ... Four shutouts included scoreless tie against CV-S in Tri-Valley League crossover for West Division champion Leopards, who finished 9-4-4 after 3-0 sectional semifinal loss to South Kortright. ... Kept team in every game as Laurens fell, 1-0, in other three losses. ... “He just knew when it was time to step up and make the big save,” Laurens coach Dave Miller said. “His size and his wingspan, that makes up for a step right there. He’s an athlete and his timing is just incredible.”

Four-year varsity starter emerged as one of Midstate Athletic Conference’s elite players. ... Finished fifth in area scoring with single-season school record of 52 points, on 23 goals and six assists. ... Prototypical goal-scorer set all-time program scoring record with 107 points (48 goals, 11 assists). ... “When he really got into a game and was flying around, we were a great soccer team,” said coach Andy Gates, whose Warriors finished 12-6-1. ...
