United States Government Writing Assessment 2nd Quarter – 2008 Objective: students will reinforce course content while strengthening their writing and research skills. Topic: This assignment will focus on the following: 

The United States Constitution and the Amendment process

Assignment: Students will write an analytical essay that MUST focus on the following: • • •

Why is our Constitution is considered a ‘living document’? How does the Amendment process work? Research 4 Amendments and provide the following: o Choose 2 from Amendments 1 – 10; 1 from 11-20; and 1 from 21 – 27 o Explain what the amendment means in your own words o Discuss the ratification of the amendment o Explain the importance of the amendment o How is the Amendment relevant today?

Requirements: the following are requirements for the paper:     

all papers must use the MLA format (see my OWL for help) 6– 8 pages long (double-spaced, font 12, Times New Roman with standard margins) must have an introduction, body, and conclusion o please underline your thesis in the introduction. a properly formatted works cited page (not to be included in your page count) all sources on works cited page must be properly cited in paper using in-text citations (no minimum; cite whatever you use)

Grade: This assignment will be worth 100 points towards your quarter grade.  NOTE: a rubric will be provided in advance to explain how the assessment will be graded. Due Date: The paper is due on Monday December 22, 2008  

Late papers will have 10 points subtracted for each day late If you would like to hand in a rough draft, please hand your rough copy in 1 week before due date. December 15
