Local Expert Shows NJ Parents How To Get The Most Money For Their Children’s College Education

N Mr. Newell will be conducting a free one-hour seminar for parents of college bound high school juniors and seniors at the following location: The Chester Public Library on Thursday, October 23rd, at 7:00 p.m.

ew Jersey parents suffering with finding ways to pay for their children’s college education can finally get the solutions to their college funding problems. Most families who earn $75,000 or more and own a home assume they are not eligible for financial aid. However, most families with income over $100,000 are actually eligible for some types of “need based” financial aid. They simply need to know how to get their fair share. According to Newell, there are several easy things parents can do to substantially increase the amount of money they get from colleges. For example, “There are several schools that historically give better financial aid packages than others,” says Newell. “If families do proper income and asset planning before filling out the forms, they can increase eligibility by thousands of dollars.” Newell offers a few simple tips to parents with college funding problems. “If a parent has only half an hour to end their college funding problems, I would suggest the following: 1. Make sure they do not over-value their home on the financial aid forms 2. Try not to save money in the child’s name as it weighs more heavily than the parent’s savings 3. Don’t be afraid to negotiate with a college for a better financial aid package. Newell offers New Jersey parents with college funding problems a free booklet that explains the 9 most common college funding problems and solutions. Free copies will be distributed at the seminar listed below. Mr. Newell will be conducting a free one-hour seminar for parents of college bound high school juniors and seniors at the following location: The Chester Public Library on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Reservation only! Fundraiser Organized to Help Grateful Family By Kathryn Davis hen Chris and Dawn Roberts welcomed their son, Samuel, into the world four years ago, their family was complete. They each had a son from a previous marriage, and the boys were thrilled to have a baby brother. Then they discovered that their sweet little boy was afflicted with cystic fibrosis, and, even more, that Dawn suffered from the disease as well. While the illness effects Dawn by forcing her to remain on pancreatic enzymes because her pancreas no longer produces these, her young son is dependent on several medications with new ones being added to his regime all the time. He needs a lung compression vest, must undergo daily therapy, and requires regular routine tests and lab work. Add to

all of this the cost of various medical supplies and the Roberts family found themselves facing severe financial hardship. Surprisingly, the family is not eligible for aid from the state. “We don't fit into the criteria for the Catastrophic Illness Fund,” explained Sam's mother, Dawn. “It's a catch 22 because the money we make goes to our medical expenses, but on paper, it looks like we make too much money. So when you have a sick child and an oil tank to fill, they don't see that.” That's where Joe Nicastro and Mary Lalama of Mt. Olive came in. Realizing the family was in crisis, Joe and Mary organized a fundraising event at the hall at Vasa Park in Budd Lake. The dinner included the generous participation of a Continued on page 15

Califon Restaurant Delighting Diners Since 1985 By Kathryn Davis tatistically, the restaurant business is risky, with a high percentage failing. According to an analysis in the August 2005 issue of the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, the total failure rate is about 60%. So how has Tony's Bistro in Califon managed to stay in business, and do so successfully, for nearly a quarter of a century? That's easy. It's their uncompromising quality. Tony's continues to prove itself again and again as one of the finest dining establishments in the area. Tony Kucevic, owner and head chef of Tony's Bistro, has been creating magic in his kitchen since the restaurant opened in 1985. A graduate of both culinary college and Fordham University, Tony worked with New York chefs at Vesuvio's in the 1970's. Moving to Califon in 1976, he opened a pizzeria on Route 513, and later opened the Bistro. Having heard about Tony's from friends, I was curious to discover what had earned it accolades from so many loyal patrons. I arrived with a friend on a weekend evening and found the entrance on the side of the building with ample parking. Inside, we strolled past a bar on the left with a partition that lends privacy to diners. The restaurant is divided into three main sections, and has a softlit, cozy atmosphere. We were greeted almost immediately by a friendly hostess and seated at a table dressed with white linens. Knowing I was writing an article, Tony

S

decided to prepare several smaller portions so that I could sample a variety of offerings from the menu. This was quite helpful since the menu and list of specials was so intriguing, making a choice would have been a real challenge. With our drinks, an attentive and courteous server brought a basket of fresh-baked crusty bread and warm garlic knots. My friend and I were started out with three appetizers. The antipasto, slices of ripe tomatoes topped with fresh mozzarella and roasted red peppers, dotted with black olives, and served on a bed of lettuce, was a nice beginning. The ceasar salad, crisp romaine with a light dressing and crouton chunks, was another good beginning. The Coconut Shrimp, however, was the real standout. Served with a delicious honey-mustard dipping sauce, the large, tender shrimp had a sweet, crisp coating, and were quick to disappear. Next to arrive at our table were two pasta dishes. The first, Spinach Ravioli with Marsala Sauce, is often offered as a special. Having had marsala sauce prepared incorrectly in other establishments, I am always reticent. Here, however, I found the sauce to be perfect, perhaps the best I have ever had. Beneath it, the pasta was cooked tender, each ravioli was topped with large mushroom slices, and the spinach/cheese filling was superb. The other pasta dish was Rigatoni in Vodka Sauce. What can be said about a good vodka sauce? Not all restaurants have mas-

tered it, but Tony's was rich, creamy, and just incredible. Both pasta dishes were topped with fresh basil, which comes from the garden just outside. Tony is proud of his herb garden, telling me later in the evening that all the herbs he uses are grown fresh on the premises. Since my friend and I both realized we would be sampling additional dishes, we forced ourselves to eat only a portion of the pastas, not an easy task. When our main entrée selections

arrived, we found ourselves sampling from three different plates. The Eggplant Rollatini, generously rolled with cheese and drenched in a delectable tomato sauce, was a choice I would certainly make on a future visit. The Flounder Piccati was lightly fried, moist and flaky with a crisp coating, presented with lemon slices, and placed beneath a light, tangy sauce with capers. What my friend and I were most impressed with, though, was the Chicken Continued on page 12

Fundraiser Planned... Continued from front page cure every day,'' Dawn said. “Until then, we must make sure he has all the care we can manage. “Samuel is a very loving. But, he can also be shy, articulate, funny and he loves to dance. He is also quite a good singer. He has a lively spirit and personality.'' Foods that we wouldn't think twice about ingesting can be extremely harmful to Samuel. “Samuel has severe food allergies to eggs and peanuts (can be deadly for him) so his menu of what he eats is not that broad,'' Dawn said. “He likes cereals, French fries, macaroni & cheese and pasta. “He is also allergic to chicken, and as for red meat, it is difficult for him to eat as he has a strong gag reflex, I'm told having respiratory issues will cause a problem with eating. We have him on protein and calcium drinks/supplements.'' According to his mother, the mutations that Samuel has are very rare, and there is on-going research with

regard to finding an effective treatment plan for his particular mutations which are: F1052V, I1139V, & Delta F508. The latter, Delta F508, he shares with Dawn who was recently diagnosed at age 43 through extensive family studies geared toward helping Samuel. In the past year Dawn has suffered pancreatic insufficiency, meaning that enzymes that aid in certain functions of the pancreas and intestines are not present and must be replaced. This works with roughly 50% of patients that are diagnosed in adulthood, and Dawn is only the 67th person in the United States where doctors have made the discovery through studies of the child, and lifelong maintenance for her disease must be maintained. Samuel and his family are currently struggling, now it's up to the community at large to give them reason for optimism. Delighting Diners... Continued from fpage 8 Monterey. The large, tender chicken breasts were breaded and fried with crisp pepperoni, and smothered in a rich, creamy monterey jack cheese sauce. While this dish had been recommended to me by more than one friend, I hadn't expected to be as impressed as I was. If you do nothing else in life, I strongly suggest you make it a point to visit Tony's and order this dish. When it came time for coffee and dessert, we were offered one of several specialty coffees including Italian Coffee (Sambuca Romana), Vanilla Delight (liquor 43 and Bailey's Irish Cream), and Irish (with Tullamore Dew). For dessert, we were served Homemade Tiramasu and Canolis. In the past, I have not been particularly impressed by Tiramasu, and would not have ordered it by choice. Both my friend and I were quite surprised at how delicious this homemade specialty of the house was. Served with dollups of fresh whipped cream and a splash of chocolate sauce, this was a light and creamy dessert that we savored to the last. The chef later confided to me the secret of his personalized recipe, but, alas, I am sworn to secrecy. You'll just have to discover its perfection for yourself. The other dessert we were served, Canolis, were also a personalized version created by Tony. The filling was the lightest I have ever encountered. It was rich and creamy with just the right balance of sweetness.

What I found particularly intriguing at Tony's was the warm and inviting atmosphere. The main objective of owner and head chef Tony Kucevic is to make his customers happy. If a customer requests a special that is not currently on the menu, they are willing to make that dish on request. Tony's also does private parties with seating from ten to eighty, and off-site catering as well. “We do everything,” Tony explains. “I don't have a catering menu. I tell the customer to come down and we'll plan the menu together. You tell me about your guests. We basically create the menu. I can do a carving station, whatever you want. I can recommend tents, a florist. We have a bakery we work with, Harper's Bakery in Hackettown. We also have several catering halls we can rent. We basically work together as a team. One phone call does it all.” The restaurant also offers a variety of pizzas and is quite family-oriented. The menu is extensive, offering something for everybody. Tony's Bistro is located at 419 Route 513 in Califon. The phone number is (908) 832-5272. Although walk-ins are always welcome, reservations are accepted. Whether you're looking for a quiet place for a romantic dinner, a place to bring the family for pizza or a more satisfying meal, or someone to cater a special event, the food here speaks for itself. If you haven't discovered Tony's yet, you're missing out.

A Look At WMCHS Boy’s Soccer By Josh Lashley he West Morris Central High School boy’s soccer program had a solid season in the fall of 2007, earning 11 victories and a spot in the North II Group III sectional tournament where they were defeated by South Plainfield in the opening round. Looking at the talent and depth of experience that they have returning to the roster this year, there should be an air of optimism surrounding this squad as the 2008 regular season gets underway. Just take a quick glance at the veteran players who will be looked upon to contribute this fall for West Morris, because it’s an impressive list of athletes. They include Mike Soares (senior, goalkeeper), Chris Romeo (senior, goalkeeper), Townsend Esemplare (senior, forward), Michael Balcon (senior, midfielder), Brendan Sommerkorn (senior, defender), Jon Stoll (senior, defender), Derek Donowick (junior, midfielder), Jake Donowick (junior, midfielder), Tim Drzewinski (junior, midfielder), Tyler Kaplan (junior, defender), Chris Rec (junior, defender/midfielder) and Brendan Thomas (junior, forward). Head coach Matt Ferreri is in his third

T

season at the helm for West Morris and he has his players working hard on the pitch to ensure a successful campaign. “The team has number of goals,’’ Ferreri said. “However, we keep those in house and work hard to achieve them.’’ Ferreri also welcomes many promising newcomers who could make a lot of positive things happen for the varsity team this season. Those players include Drew Capone (senior, forward), Atish Gupta (senior, defender), Conor Harris (senior, midfielder/ forward), Jordan Hessels (senior, midfielder), Derek Palme (senior, defender), Robert Regan (senior, midfielder), Mark Spratley (senior, defender), Ryan Weinstein (senior, defender), Tyler Kavanaugh (junior, forward) and Connor Magnusen (sophomore, midfielder). “There is a lot of potential in this team,’’ Ferreri said. “Hopefully we can reach our potential this year and compete for conference, county and state honors.’’ West Morris begins that journey with a road game at Roxbury High School on Saturday, September 13. Their first home game will be against Randolph High School on September 15.

By Elsie Walker hen I woke up that day, I could have sworn it was Labor Day weekend 2008. However, as I looked around the parking lot at the Parsippany Hilton, it sure didn't look like 2008. Bobby soxers passed by and an outdoor boutique had mannequins modeling peasant blouses and poodle skirts. A young teen seemed to be working on a marathon hula-hoop record. I could hear “Where the Boys Are” plaintively sung by a singer performing that Connie Francis standard. A large outdoor screen was waiting until dark for the drive-in double feature,

or 31st with the final weigh in. Weight loss will be calculated by percentage of body weight lost (lbs. divided by original weight), so everyone has a change to win. The top three winners will be awarded the following: 1st place - a $300 gift certificate from J. Thomas Jewelers, 2nd place - a $200 gift certificate from J. Thomas Jewelers, and 3rd place a $100 gift certificate from J. Thomas Jewelers. There's nothing to lose except those extra pounds! It's a win, win situation! Call Active Weigh at 973-927-9400, or J. Thomas Jewelers at 973-927-4040 to schedule your appointment.

"Surfs Up, where's Annette and Frankie?" That's the message this classic '50s chevy seems to convey to those checking out the cars at Lead East held over Labor Day weekend.

“The African Queen” and “When Worlds Collide” to begin. Cars cruised by carrying “teens” in their '40s, '50's, and '60's, who for a moment seemed to have

found the portal back to a more innocent time. The event was the 26th annual Lead East, otherwise known as the World's Biggest '50s party. The event is run by Appleton Productions, Inc. of Long Valley (alias Terry Cook and Linda Naprstek). The “party” dates back to 1983 when Cook, a former editor of Hot Rod magazine and a former writer for Car & Driver, wanted to throw an event for customized cars. A natural tie-in was '50s music and movies. From that first event grew a party which this year welcomed approximately 1,500 classic cars from 22 states. (Yes, it is far from an east coast only event). Where does the “lead” come from? As noted in the official party program, “lead was the material auto body men used to make customized cars, and custom is why this event started out.” There are many that come to show their cars each year, every year. Some lay claim to a certain

area near or in the parking lot, decorate it nostalgically, make it their “hang out” and welcome other longtime regulars to visit. But, the event is more than cars. There's sock hops, a prom, oldies bands and Do Wop groups (this year there were 33 of them). People take a crack at crooning popular favorites like Louis Armstrong's “What A Wonderful World” (complete with handkerchief). Ok, they cheat and use a Karoke machine. But still, it's the culture, feel, and sounds of the 1950s brought back to life. While the cars were the original draw for me (I've been coming to the party for over a decade), the innocence and joy of the party keeps me there. I'm only what you call a “spectator”; I don't show a car. But, there is still something welcoming about the event that makes even the roar of the 2008 seem to dissipate as the velvety sound of “Twilight Time” rolls around.

miling Faces…Going Places pretty much sums it up for the Hackettstown Community Band this year. The band performed all over northwestern New Jersey, from holiday and fire department parades, to concerts in the park, Special Olympics and various senior citizen residences. The band always leads the Hackettstown Memorial Day parade, and participates in various fire department parades including the Boonton parade during the Labor Day holiday weekend. Concerts in the park, this year, included Belvidere, Stewartsville and Meadowbreeze (Washington Boro, Warren County ). Every year the band has participated in the Special Olympic events in Hackettstown and enjoyed bringing music to senior citizens at Mt Olive Manor and the House of the Good Shepherd in Hackettstown. The band is funded, in part, by the Warren County Cultural and Heritage Commission and is open to volunteer membership from anyone interested in instrumental performance. The band rehearses every Thursday evening from 7:30-9:30PM at the Hackettstown Community Center, 293 Main St. For more information log on to www.hackettstownband.org or call Pete Grice at (973)610-1308

Harlin’s Point of View....

Tom’s Point of View...

The Culture War Comes Roaring Back Why are Democrats afraid of Sarah Palin? by Harlin Parker So here we are at the beginning of the 2008 election season. Oh sure, it feels as though the presidential election has been going on forever, but it is only now, following the conventions, that both tickets are set and the race is truly on. Sitting at home over the past couple of weeks recovering from surgery, I’ve had the pleasure of watching 27/7 coverage of both conventions. Sadly, if the conventions are any guide, the 2008 race isn’t looking pretty. Let me explain. While I’m sure I’m not alone, it sometimes feels like I’m in a small minority. I’ve said over and over again that, in our democracy, our opponents are not our enemies. In order to ensure a healthy democracy, we need healthy political parties where opinions and positions can be formulated, articulated and promoted. We all must listen to and respect opposing, responsible points of view. In the United States, we have the two major political parties as well as a number of smaller parties which are generally rather narrowly focused. Those smaller parties can, and do, offer arguments and positions on issues of public policy which should be heard and taken into account. However, with few exceptions, it is the two major parties wherein those who would lead us, both in the executive and legislative branches of government, are found. I’m a strong believer in party politics, as long as it is done well. That means, among other things, that positions taken by members of the opposing parties are respected even as they are rebutted. Opposing arguments, well articulated, allow everyone to listen, having such positions tested and thus allowing all of us to make choices based on intelligent (even though impassioned) discussion. That’s how it’s supposed to work, that’s how it can work, and that’s how it should work. Sadly, in St. Paul, it didn’t work out that way. Although Senator McCain’s acceptance speech did include statements explicitly in line with the idea of respecting opposing viewpoints and working in a bipartisan manner to reach solutions, the vast majority of the speeches given at the Republican convention this week were anything but intelligent or respectful. Not only were the Republican speechmakers disrespectful of opposing parties, they were disrespectful of all of us as citizens and members of our society. Each speaker, in his or her own way, made it clear, sometimes with the subtlety of a sledge hammer, that Liberals in this country are unpatriotic and amoral with just one thing in mind; to raise everyone’s taxes. And let’s be clear: each speech was approved

by Senator McCain before it was given. He knew what would be said. He obviously wanted those things said. This just won’t do. Democrats and Liberals have taken issue with the policies of the current administration, with the positions of the Republican party, those of Senator McCain specifically and with the public policy positions taken by those who call themselves Conservatives. However, at no time, not once, did I hear any of the speakers in Denver give even the slightest impression that our opponents were unpatriotic or immoral. Clearly, those who gathered in St. Paul were the radical hard right element of the Republican party. It wasn’t that many years ago that Senator McCain himself denounced this radical fringe group of his party. Unfortunately, in the bitter cold calculations of presidential electoral college strategy, Senator McCain has veered his straight talk express sharp right and into the sneering, bellicose rantings of those such as Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, and Rudy Giuliani. But Senator McCain didn’t stop there. In his first “presidential” decision, Senator McCain has offered up Governor Sarah Palin as the best person available to take over as President of the United States in the event something (G-d forbid) were to happen to him. It is nonsense to try to compare Governor Palin’s “experience” with Senator Obama’s. Senator Obama has subjected himself to the will of the voters. Our democratic process has shown that actual voters want him as our President. But voters don’t get to choose the Vice President. No, in a quirk of our constitution, that position is not voted upon separately. Let’s keep in mind that, other than casting a tie breaking vote in the Senate, the Vice President actually does not have any specific job. The Vice President is our “insurance policy” in the event something happens to the President. Senator Obama has chosen Senator Joe Biden, a well respected, worldly and very experienced person who everyone agrees is capable of taking over that office (even if you don’t agree with his views). That just cannot be said for Governor Palin, however much you may like her. She’s the “Commander In Chief” of the Alaska National Guard? Gimme a break. For goodness sake, Morris County has more residents than the entire state of Alaska. Is someone going to seriously argue that Margaret Nordstrom (county freeholder chair and past mayor of Washington Township) is ready to be President of the United States? Certainly Governor Palin is not. If you think Senator Obama lacks the Continued on page 20

by Tom Lotito The wheels are starting to come off the bus for the Democrats. Why are the Democrats along with the major news media, so afraid of John McCain's VP pick, Sarah Palin, the Governor of Alaska? Because Sarah Palin embodies the heart and soul of Conservatism. She can galvanize the Conservative base to give John McCain the needed support for a win a in Nov. She is also pro-life not by word, but by deed. And you must have read by now, Mrs. Palin just had a down syndrome baby at age 44, setting aside her doctor's warnings and recommendation of an abortion. It was also announced that her daughter Bristol, age 17 was pregnant and will marry the father, a hockey player and HS sweetheart, Levi Johnston. "Hypocrite", "I hate you, I hate you" "McCain is a liar", " Does John McCain know what he's doing?" This is just a small sample of the hate comments on Politico.com from Liberal Democrat bloggers and the mainstream news media. The left wing anti-God anti-country and antifamily Liberal Democrats have become unhinged over McCain's VP choice, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Why? Sarah Palin is keeping her newborn son Trig and giving him a life. Bristol has chosen to have her baby, get married to her boyfriend, and raise their baby, with the unconditional love and help from Governor Palin and her husband Todd. This raises the question, should Sarah Palin withdraw from the public arena of ideas and opinions and wear a scarlet letter for practicing family values, because her daughter became pregnant and did not follow the value system her mother and father taught her at home? No. We can teach our children abstinence, but it doesn't mean that they will automatically comply with our wishes. Teenage pregnancy has happened to many good and decent families. Of course, this is not the future we had hoped for our children when they are born! But as a God fearing people, we choose life! This display of family values by Gov. Palin, is in direct conflict with the liberal establishment media complex dogma. According to the Liberals this is reason enough to expel Palin from the VP slot and send her back to Alaska. Because Mrs. Palin doesn't embrace liberalism, she has become the Bain of the modern Liberal Democrat party's existence in the midst of a presidential campaign. They are calling Mrs. Palin a hypocrite because she espouses "family values" and is helping her daughter Bristol, keep and raise her baby. These personal decisions by the Palin family destroys the liberal

notion of Planned Parenthood and abortion for teens. This has caused the Mainstream News Media to work like journalists and they are busy searching garbage cans looking for dirt on the Palin family. The question becomes; Why wasn't there any of this type of scrutiny of Barack Hussein Obama? Where is the journalistic investigation of real-estate developer, convicted felon, Tony Rezko, and the shady land deal in Chicago when he helped the Obamas buy their mansion below market price? Where are the news stories about Obama's relationship with unrepentant terrorist and Pentagon bomber William Ayers? Who said on 911, "I wish I did more" referring to the pentagon bombings he was involved in the 1970's. Why is Barack Obama is suing the Justice dept to criminalize and keep an independent 501(C) (3) organization from running TV and radio ads about Barack Obama's association with William Ayers? In case you didn't know it Obama has had an acquaintance with Ayers for more than 10 years as community organizer in Chicago. Obama sought Ayers blessings when he decided to run for president. Obama knows that it will expose him for the Communist ideology that he embraces as a vision for America's future. Sarah Palin also believes in drilling for new oil offshore and in ANWR. Palin supports tax cuts, less government intrusion, reduced taxes on small businesses, strong defense of our nation and will support the appointment of conservative judges to the supreme court. Governor Palin answers her own phone in the Governor office, drives herself to and from work, and prepares home cooked meals for her family. Sarah Palin is one of us and she's beautiful too! Alaska provides 20% of the nations oil supply. In 2006 Palin put together a deal to bring natural gas to the Midwest, helping to stabilize the natural gas market and create jobs for the local economy of Alaska. The prior administration had shelved the project in the name of global warming. Palin also brought ethics reform to the Republican party in Alaska, and has an 80% approval rating. Sarah Palin, is a rising star in the GOP, and has more executive experience as Governor, than Barack Obama and Joe Biden combined. What's the difference between a pit bull and a soccer mom? The lipstick! Sarah Palin told this joke at the convention. Her speech was a home run hit out of the park. Sarah Palin is like Ronald Continued on page 19

Afraid of Sarah Palin? Continued from fpage 18 Reagan, able to use wit and humor on the campaign trail in speeches. Obama and the Democrats are on the defensive, Sarah Palin is a brilliant choice by John McCain, the Liberals worst nightmare. A conservative woman candidate who will unite the Christian Conservative base against Obama and the Democrats in Nov. Locally here in Long Valley, Kevin Nedd, was elected in 2005 as an Independent fiscal Conservative to the township committee, has now switched parties to run as a Trenton style tax-andspend Democrat. Giving up his conservative message, the recent reevaluation of property tax increases shifted the burden on homes at the lower economic end of the scale, property taxes went up as much as 24% and more in some cases. Mr. Nedd was quoted as saying" these homeowners were reaping the benefits of an artificially low rate". Taxes on new homes on the higher end of the scale actually went down. It is fair to conclude that Kevin Nedd believes that high taxes for McMansions should be shifted to middle income families to make up the difference, here in Long Valley. Mr. Nedd, who attributes his election to office from blogging on local message boards, The buzzer.com, The Daily Record, and the Observer-Tribune have been embroiled in quite a few political controversies.

Mr. Nedd spent his own money last year and put up signs trying to influence the Republican primary against Howard Popper. Mr. Nedd was also involved in the Ruth McCurdy ethics controversy that cost the school board $25,000. This spring in the uncontested Republican and Democrat primary, Mr. Nedd took down his Republican opponent's sign and left it on his door step with a note saying that Jim Harmon was in violation of the campaign laws. Many times, Mr. Nedd was asked on these websites about his involvement in these controversies, and always replied "come to a committee meeting and I will give you an answer". So, a group of civic minded citizens went to a committee meeting and proceeded to ask Mr. Nedd about his involvement with taking down the sign and leaving a note. Mr. Nedd's reply was "no comment". As it turns out Mr. Nedd has "no authority to go on someone's property and remove a sign".said the Washington Township zoning officer, Virginia Kesper. Not even the zoning officer has the legal right to take down a sign and trespass on your property. I was a very enthusiastic supporter of Kevin Nedd in 2005, but I am disappointed in Mr. Nedd's antics of the last three years. So, this year I am supporting Jim Harmon For Township Committee. Kevin Nedd won't fool me again! Agree? Disagree? [email protected]

The Culture War... Continued from fpage 18 experience or ability to be our President, then don’t vote for him. However, the primary voters do think he has what it takes to be our President and I have every confidence the majority of voters will feel the same this November. Nobody but Senator McCain has made that choice about Governor Palin; she who was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it. She who reduced funding for special needs children (by over 60% !!) before she found herself as the mother of a special needs child (now she would like all to know that she’ll be an advocate for special needs children). She who wants to impose the teaching of the Christian theocratic idea of creationism as part of the science curriculum in our public schools. The radical right conservatives might like her, but mainstream American she ain’t.

With his embrace of the radical right wing of his party, and his choice of Governor Palin, Senator McCain has resurrected the divisive, debilitating culture wars. Been there, done that. It wasn’t fun then, and it won’t be fun, or productive, now. This country faces many real issues which need immediate, decisive, bipartisan action, from the economy to energy self sufficiency, to healthcare. Stoking the passions of the culture wars may help Senator McCain’s election chances, as he obviously believes, but it won’t do a darn thing about addressing the real issues that face us. Nor will it raise the level of discourse or the level of respect that voters deserve. As far as I’m concerned, the straight talk express is a wreck. You can reach Harlin Parker at [email protected]
